Centering Environmental Justice And Sustainability In Deij Values, Heather F. Clark, Ellie Perry

CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change

In this article we articulate a framework for understanding sustainability and environmental justice as part of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) values in higher education. Examining our campus’ vision and history, we illustrate how a commitment to environmental justice is part and parcel to supporting educational equity and social justice at a model urban university. This framework highlights how ignoring environmental concerns limits our collective potentially to support DEIJ goals, and how centering sustainability concerns can strengthen DEIJ efforts in higher education. We argue that achieving social and educational justice is only possible if environmental justice is also pursued.

In the face of injustice and oppression, history remembers those who dared to resist. GomBurZa (2023), directed by Pepe Diokno, follows the story of the three martyred priests—Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora—whose execution in 1872 ignited a national awakening during the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines (Agbayani III, 2022). This qualitative study explored how the Baby Boomer Generation and Generation Z in Metro Manila received and interpreted the film. Cosplay is a fun way to express oneself through costumes and roleplay that has given rise to a vibrant global community. While various studies have explored certain elements of this phenomenon, the cosplay community remains partially unexplored. This research aims to further investigate the dynamics of the cosplay community, providing meaningful insights into the identity processes, motivations, sense of belonging, and creativity that define it. Using in-depth interviews and online questionnaires, the research examines how cosplayers interact with community-building, creativity, identity, and self-expression. Media plays a crucial role in shaping public perceptions of gender and sexuality, yet representations of queer female characters in Philippine cinema remain underexplored. While portrayals of bakla characters have been widely studied, lesbian narratives often remain sidelined or framed through limited, stereotypical lenses. This lack of nuanced representation perpetuates narrow understandings of queer identity and reinforces gendered power structures within Philippine society. This study examines how Filipino women evaluate physical attractiveness, likeability, and social competence based on variations in skin color and body build—traits shaped by colonial legacies and reinforced by contemporary media. A 2×2 factorial experimental design was used, involving 180 female college students (ages 18–25), who rated target images that varied by skin color (light vs. dark) and body build (slim vs. large). While neither skin color nor body build alone had a significant main effect on perceptions of attractiveness, a significant interaction emerged: slim, dark-skinned individuals were rated more attractive than their light-skinned counterparts, whereas light-skinned individuals were preferred …

This qualitative study investigates how three teachers attend to and pedagogically support socioemotional aspects of fifth-grade students’ learning during student self-directed inquiry projects called the Kids Inquiry Conference (KIC) using Spradley’s domain and taxonomic analyses of classroom observation and interview data. Theoretical underpinnings meet at the intersection of affective neuroscience, socioemotional competencies, and a Deweyan perspective of inquiry learning, emplacing this study within literature exploring the range of affective factors impacting elementary learners engaged in student-centered inquiry projects (e.g., identity work, motivation, self-regulation, etc.). In this study, I assess the relationship between various types of demographic variables, including individual, partner, and family-level information, and the likelihood of mothers staying at home. Using nationally representative data from the 2019,2021, and 2023 waves of the Annual Social and Economic Supplement (ASEC) to the Current Population Survey to account for differences across the COVID-19 pandemic, this analysis examines the likelihood of becoming a stay-at-home mother (SAHM) across three separate regression models. From the variables analyzed, I find that various individual, family, and partner demographic characteristics are significantly associated with the likelihood of becoming a SAHM. These results …

The introduction of over 100 anti-DEI bills across 30 states and President Trump’s signing of executive orders that target DEI programs demonstrate the backlash against the social, cultural, and political gains made by movements such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter. “Anti-woke" sentiment presents challenges for educators preparing students to engage critically with certain histories, movements, and theories. This article explains current debates around what it means to be “woke”; provides strategies to teach about inequality across race, gender, class, and sexuality in this polarized environment; and imagines futures that uphold the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This critical commentary explores the tensions of embodying feminist pedagogy as both researcher and teacher. Drawing on the success of Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR) in redesigning women's shelter intake procedures, I argue for integrating service-learning into the classroom. However, the effectiveness of both PAR and service-learning hinges on a strong foundation in feminist methodologies that prioritize equity, justice, and community care (Bowdon, Pigg, & Mansfield, 2014; Johnson & Flynn, 2021; Vergés Bosch, Freude, & Camps Calvet, 2021). For college students, learning about the components of identity can generate deeper knowledge about how personal and social identities differ, and how identities influence the way individuals experience socio-cultural systems and structures. The Exploring Dimensions of Crystallized Identities activity uses principles of self-reflexivity and dialogue to explore theoretical frameworks for practical application. This experiential activity is a facilitated dialogue driven by student involvement and is best suited for students in mid- to upper-level undergraduate courses. It encourages students to reflect on their and others’ identities, and to consider the social impacts of diversity in their lives.

This original teaching activity invites students to investigate dominant influences on enacted daily rhythms to arrive at a clearer understanding of their own rhythms and those around them. Students are guided to somatically sense habitual rhythms and understand how habits of accent collectively form to hold us together. Through a two-part activity, involving large group interaction and paired observation, students explore degrees of releasing or withholding natural rhythmic impulses through concession to or freedom within group rhythms and when navigating online platforms. The aim is to explore desired emotional arcs of how experiences might unfold.

We propose a feminist course approach wherein instructors build what Amie Macdonald (2002) called "communities of meaning" in their classrooms (p.120). Through an intentional focus on supporting students' 1) individual identities, 2) holistic well-being, and 3) epistemic "buy-in" to classroom content, students will connect more deeply not only to themselves and their classmates, but also to the course material. This article explores how the ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education codes the idealized information literate individual as White. It illuminates how White language supremacy is used in the Framework to code the idealized information literate individual as White. By articulating the use of White language supremacy in the Framework, this article suggests how to begin the process of deconstructing this White ideal and thus transforming the Framework from a tool of colonization and oppression into something that steps toward liberation.

Summer Camp Island exhibits the culmination of the animation styles and ethics of dependent care produced within contemporary Cartoon Network animations. As part of the production cycle of Warner Bros. animated television programs following Adventure Time, Julia Pott’s animated program depicts networks of collaborative care informed by the lived realities of the creator-animators. Their music emerged concurrently with the birth of contemporary Christian music; however, their significant musical innovations have not been widely recognized as part of the Jesus Movement revival. This quantitative study examined the role of divine forgiveness on depressive experiences by self-forgiveness and self-condemnation in a sample of Hispanic/Latinos. Since research indicates a positive association between divine forgiveness, self-forgiveness, and well-being, this study’s importance includes gaining knowledge to increase well-being and exploring virtue ethics and theological perspectives. This research addressed a significant gap in the literature by interaction of divine forgiveness, self-forgiveness, self-condemnation, and depressive symptoms on the Hispanic/Latino population of believers.
