This study investigates how the participatory design concept of infra structuring and the formation of a public manifests differently in Japanese workplaces under data-driven management. Building on recognized pillars for public formation—incorporation of authority, development of attachment, and cultivation of ownership—we explore how these elements are shaped by Japan's unique organizational and cultural dynamics. Although employees in Japan express concerns about data use in the workplace, such as potential increases in bias, discrimination, deskilling, and unsafe practices, these anxieties rarely lead to open discussion or collective action. Interdisciplinary teams are crucial for organizational innovation but face a dual-process challenge: disciplinary differences can either foster creativity-enhancing integrative complexity or hinder it through intellectual centrism. This study examines these opposing mechanisms and their contingent factors. Drawing on paradox theory, we propose that conflict arising from disciplinary differences activates: (1) integrative complexity (the differentiation and integration of contradictory perspectives), which enhances creative performance; and (2) intellectual centrism (a rigid adherence to one’s discipline), which inhibits creativity. Paradoxical task framing (e.g., pursuing novelty and practicality) intensifies both mechanisms. Notably, these effects primarily emerge during the convergent phase (idea selection) of the …

Developing expressive motion for non-humanoid companion robots is a growing area of research in human–robot interaction. This study presents a hybrid design approach that integrates designer-led ideation with user-based empirical validation to develop physical actions for Lemmy, a two-wheeled companion robot for elderly users. This paper examines the digitization of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH), through the case of Ronghua, a traditional Chinese craft. We investigate the current practices in presenting and promoting the ICH craft-making process, gather insights on digitization, and propose key considerations and design implications through semi-structured interviews with 9 Ronghua craftspeople and three co-design workshops with 19 participants, including craftspeople, interaction designers, and end users. This study investigates the multifaceted concept of “home” for people with dementia, extending beyond physical shelter to encompass sensory, emotional, and relational dimensions. Drawing on a qualitative, participatory co-design approach at GRACE Lab— a living lab embedded in a Milan dementia village—we engaged five residents with mild-to-moderate dementia, care staff, and design researchers in semi-structured interviews, observations, storytelling, and one-on-one workshops. Historical design research often prioritizes grand narratives, while the cultural sig- nificance of everyday objects and their spatial contexts is frequently overlooked. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the evolution of "object-space" order in domestic environments through an integrated approach combining computer vision technology and natural language processing. By analysing image data across different periods, we identify object categories, placements, and spatial configurations, revealing micro-level organizational patterns and macro-level influ- ences of functionality and socio-cultural factors. This study explores how generative AI (GAI) and humans interpret emotional meanings through color in cinematic visuals. Drawing from film color theory, we designed a set of mood palettes and applied them to keyframes generated by GAI. Using qualitative questionnaires, we compared emotional interpretations from human participants and GPT-4o. Results revealed overlapping but diverging perceptions: humans relied on narrative context and memory, while AI leaned on statistical associations. These findings highlight GAI’s limited emotional grounding and suggest opportunities to enhance visual storytelling tools through hybrid color-emotion frameworks. In the context of post-usability cultures, where users increasingly seek emotional resonance over mere functionality, this study explores the potential of kawaii as a communicative grammar in interface icon design. Adopting a three-phase methodology— (1) UI audit of 31 mobile applications, (2) metaphor extraction across 101 apps to identify dominant icon types, and (3) an evaluation experiment involving 21 participants rating 12 heart-shaped icon stimuli—this research investigates how subtle visual modifications along three design axes (stroke thickness, curvature and fullness, spatial balance) influence users’ kawaii perception. During these years, the military dictatorship, known as the "Proceso de Reorganización Nacional," implemented a systematic campaign of state terrorism, targeting suspected political protesters, activists, intellectuals, and ordinary citizens. Widespread kidnappings, illegal detentions, and forced disappearances became routine, with an estimated 30,000 people vanishing without a trace. A Burlesque: The Shimmer Manuscript is a hybrid critical–creative work that examines burlesque as an embodied methodology and a mode of knowledge production. Drawing from my two decades as a performer–scholar, the work reframes glamour, desire, and adornment as epistemological practices rather than theatrical ornamentation. The project is significant in that it expands understandings of performance studies, autotheory, and feminist aesthetics by foregrounding the performer’s body as an intelligent, sensing, world-making apparatus.

In this qualitative study, I interviewed four special education teacher candidates with a stated interest in enacting anti-ableist pedagogy in their student teaching placements. I drew on Holland et al.’s (1998) figured worlds to examine their attempts to enact anti-ableist pedagogy in their classrooms and their navigation of the hierarchy within their placements. Participants entered their student teaching eager to implement anti-ableist pedagogy. However, their attempts at implementation were often met with pushback from a variety of sources and a new understanding of how much they could actually accomplish from their place at the bottom of the school hierarchy. Arabic is used in a widespread, predominantly Middle Eastern and North African region, but it has diverse expressive variations. Therefore, the value of translating and validating scales lies in their compatibility with cultural norms. This study examined the effect of stocking density on the growth performance of the Pacific shortfin eel Anguilla bicolor pacifica reared in outdoor tank conditions. Glass eels (0.72 ± 0.03 g mean body weight [BW]) were stocked at 50 and 100 individuals m⁻² in 6 4-m² outdoor tanks with a flow-through system set up in triplicate. This dissertation examines the intersection of peyote religion, historical trauma, and the emergent psychedelic movement through a critical Indigenous lens. Centering peyote as both a sacred medicine and a symbolic flashpoint, the study highlights how contemporary psychedelic policy, practice, and commercialization perpetuate settler-colonial paradigms and threaten Indigenous cultural survival. While mainstream narratives frame psychedelics as tools for healing, this research emphasizes how such framing often obscures deeper histories of dispossession, cultural appropriation, and epistemic violence. This dissertation examines El Orinoco Ilustrado (EOI) by Joseph Gumilla as a layered textual and cartographic artifact central to the production of colonial knowledge in the Orinoco River basin. Moving beyond surface narratives of evangelization and exploration, it interrogates the sombras and silencios implanted in the Jesuit chronicle.
