The Deep Path In Foucault's Critique Of Reason And Its Enlightenments For Post-Theory, Yang Liu
The Deep Path In Foucault's Critique Of Reason And Its Enlightenments For Post-Theory, Yang Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
In Foucault's early research on madness history which contains four stages, the path of reason repressing non-reason gradually transformed the connotation of non-reason from being "arational" to "irrational" in a subtle manner. The former is not being rational, but is compatible with complete reason. The latter is not being rational either and resists reason in the narrow sense, namely rationality. This path was strengthened in his later study which focused on Kant's idea of enlightenment and thus led to the thought of eventalization. Theory has pushed this process forward. This thesis presents an extended explanation of this important issue, and …
The Material Return Of Cultural Studies: Culture And Society From The Perspective Of Tony Bennett's Governmentality, Xiaoxia Xu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Tony Bennett has established systematic theories and methodologies on the New Materialism from the perspective of governmentality, which, however, is often neglected by scholars. Based on intensive reading of relevant textual contents and conceptual interpretation, the article deeply and comprehensively investigates Bennett's New Materialism with dialectical analysis and reflection. It argues that Bennett has boldly assimilated the Actor-network Theory by the French post-structuralist sociologist Latour and others when recontextualizing, from the governmentality perspective, society, culture and their relationships. In this process, Bennett developed the idea of Assembling Culture to underscore the dynamic material generating process of culture and the social, …
The Naissance Of Dystopia, Rourou Zhao
The Naissance Of Dystopia, Rourou Zhao
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Dystopia is one of the most critical narratives of the popular culture. To some extent, it is beyond interpretation because of its definition: it is well known that dystopia refers to a bad place while utopia means a good place; that is, dystopia is a negative utopia. But if we look into the works that are called dystopias, it is obvious that they do not simply disavow what utopias insist. They also deal with various theses like feminism, post-humanism, modernity, etc. This paper focuses on the emergence of dystopia from the beginning and tries to analyze its discursive formation.
Three Dimensions Of Ecological Aesthetics: Félix Guattari's Thought Of "The Three Ecologies", Huiqing Zhang
Three Dimensions Of Ecological Aesthetics: Félix Guattari's Thought Of "The Three Ecologies", Huiqing Zhang
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Based on the real context of human-nature relation in the epoch of the Anthropocene and the thought of ecosophy in the ethico-aesthetic paradigm, Félix Guattari's thought of "The Three Ecologies" leads to the theoretical transformation of ecological aesthetics from environmental ecological dimension in a narrow sense to a generalized ecological model composed of environmental, social and mental ecological dimensions. Based on environmental ecosophy, the environmental ecological dimension follows the machinic aesthetic paradigm and serves the purpose of presenting the natural process and ecological justice for all species. Based on social ecosophy, the social ecological dimension follows the group Eros principle …

How To Preach From A Parable, Gary Burge
How To Preach From A Parable, Gary Burge
Symposium on Worship Archive
Speaking in parables was Jesus’ preferred form of teaching. Both his world and ours are drawn to these concise, poignant stories. This seminar will analyze the parable in its ancient cultural context, illustrate how parables can be interpreted, outline a few pitfalls, and provide a case study using one of Jesus’ most difficult stories, The Parable of the Friend at Midnight (Luke 11:1–13).

U.S. Consumers’ Perception Of Asian Brands’ Cultural Authenticity And Its Impact On Perceived Quality, Trust, And Patronage Intention, Sarah Song Southworth
U.S. Consumers’ Perception Of Asian Brands’ Cultural Authenticity And Its Impact On Perceived Quality, Trust, And Patronage Intention, Sarah Song Southworth
Faculty Publications - College of Business
This study investigated the effectiveness of a brand marketing strategy that can be used by Asian brands originating from particularly emerging Asian countries to introduce themselves to the U.S. consumers. Specifically, the study examined how Asian-themed brand logos can enhance an Asian brand’s cultural authenticity, perceived quality, brand trust, and patronage intentions. The results of a nation-wide survey of 570 U.S. consumers provided empirical support for the proposed relationship. The research provides empirical insight on how authentic “Asian-ness” could be one helpful way to position Asian brands in the U.S. marketplace. The study concludes with contributions, limitations, and future research …
Heroine Of One Thousand Faces: Memoirs By Four Women Soldiers In The Great War And Postwar Period, Chenwen Hong
Heroine Of One Thousand Faces: Memoirs By Four Women Soldiers In The Great War And Postwar Period, Chenwen Hong
Doctoral Dissertations
“Heroine of One Thousand Faces: Memoirs by Four Women Soldiers in the Great War and Postwar Period” is a comparative project that contributes to ongoing conversations within First World War feminist literary scholarship. My study fills in a research gap concerning autobiographies by women soldiers. It explores the autobiographical writings of four women soldiers who came from different nationalities and spoke different languages. Each of their cultures carried different traditions of women warriors, and each woman came from a different class situation, around the globe. Maria Botchkareva, a semi-literate peasant, spoke Russian; Flora Sandes, native to Yorkshire, was a cosmopolitan …

Understanding Face And Shame: A Servant-Leadership And Face Management Model, Jiying Song
Understanding Face And Shame: A Servant-Leadership And Face Management Model, Jiying Song
Faculty Publications - George Fox Digital
Clergy can have a negative impact on churches and other individuals when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face and feeling ashamed will likely permeate clergy’s decision-making processes without even being noticed. This study explores the essence of face and face management and the relationship between face management and two characteristics of servant-leadership—awareness and healing—in both Chinese and American churches through the methodology of hermeneutic phenomenology. Prior to this study, to my knowledge, no hermeneutic phenomenological research of face …

Natural Strategies For Controlling Virulence And Antibiotic Resistance In Clostridium Difficile, Abraham Joseph Pellissery
Natural Strategies For Controlling Virulence And Antibiotic Resistance In Clostridium Difficile, Abraham Joseph Pellissery
Doctoral Dissertations
Clostridium difficile is a significant enteric pathogen causing a toxin-mediated infection and diarrhea in humans. There has been an increased incidence of C. difficile infection (CDI) in the United States with the emergence of hypervirulent strains and community associated outbreaks. CDI is commonly observed among hospital in-patients undergoing protracted antibiotic therapy, which results in gastrointestinal dysbiosis, creating a conducive environment for spore germination, pathogen colonization in the gut, and subsequent toxin production. An ideal anti-C.difficile therapeutic agent should inhibit critical virulence factors of the pathogen such as toxin production, sporulation and spore germination without inducing gut dysbiosis. Such agents …

Cross-Mediterranean Egyptian Migrants: A Discursive Analysis, Sara Hussein
Cross-Mediterranean Egyptian Migrants: A Discursive Analysis, Sara Hussein
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates how the Egyptian migrant subject who chooses to cross the Mediterranean through irregular means to reach Europe is discursively constructed in Egyptian media, particularly in the wake of the 2016 Rashid boat sinking. In both official and public discourse, this highly visible and well-documented accident raised questions on accountability and the role of the state in this situation. By identifying and analyzing the themes represented throughout a diverse collected fieldwork corpus of various Egyptian media, statements by public officials and organizations, newspaper articles and editorials, television talk show programming, and popular cultural production, this thesis offers a …
The Urban Inn: Gathering Space, Hierarchy And Material Culture In The Eighteenth-Century British Town, Daniel Maudlin
The Urban Inn: Gathering Space, Hierarchy And Material Culture In The Eighteenth-Century British Town, Daniel Maudlin
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences
ABSTRACT: This article locates the ‘principal inn’ within the physical and cultural space of the eighteenth-century British town. The principal inn was the all-purpose venue for the sociable activities of polite society: from dining, drinking and conversing with friends to business deals, meetings of club and societies, legal proceedings, military musters, civic and religious proceedings. Through their central location, carefully designed interior spaces and refined material culture of furniture, fixtures and fittings, principal inns were key sites in the elite control of urban space, the enforcement of social hierarchies and the reinforcement of social values.
