Turning In The Widening Gyre: History, Corporate Accountability, And Transitional Justice In The Postcolony, Jeffrey Atteberry Feb 2019

Turning In The Widening Gyre: History, Corporate Accountability, And Transitional Justice In The Postcolony, Jeffrey Atteberry

Chicago Journal of International Law

This Article argues that transitional justice, by increasing efforts to include corporate accountability within its various mechanisms, may confront the global structures of rule that systematically produce conditions of violence within formerly colonized nation-states. Building on work by Giorgio Agamben and Homi Bhabha, I demonstrate that the very notion of a “transition” around which transitional justice is articulated derives from a nineteenth-century understanding of history that reflects the ideology of development which supported the colonial system. Moments of violent historical discontinuity, legally conceptualized as “states of exception,” provide the paradigmatic bases for models of transitional justice. But, in the history …

Cultural Disposition Influences In Workgroups: A Motivational Systems Theory Of Group Involvement Perspective, Verlin B. Hinsz, Ernest Park, Angela K. Y. Leung, Jared Ladbury Feb 2019

Cultural Disposition Influences In Workgroups: A Motivational Systems Theory Of Group Involvement Perspective, Verlin B. Hinsz, Ernest Park, Angela K. Y. Leung, Jared Ladbury

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Modern organizations often involve workgroup members who have different cultural heritage. This article provides an examination of how different cultural dimensions (e.g., uncertainty avoidance, individualism–collectivism) influence the ways that workgroups and their members respond to situations that involve threats and rewards. The threats and rewards activate distinct response patterns that are associated with a motivational systems theory of group involvement. Based on this theoretical foundation, a cultural dispositions approach is applied to reveal how culture could impact the ways group members respond (cognitively, affectively, motivationally) to situations that involve varying degrees of threats or rewards. This focus on cultural dispositions …

This is not just a compilation of skills, theories, methods, and methodologies but an examination of the various facets of a human being trying to make sense of a single human being: himself. The research presented here is an attempt to gain a better understanding of self through examination of emotions and how they are expressed, movement and how it brings forth and may hold the possibility of inner wellness, pain and its power as a common language, and the relationship between knowing and feeling. Burgeoning spirituality, self-worth, …

Reverse The Curse: Colonialist Legacies Of The Magic Poem, Karen E. Lepri Feb 2019

Reverse The Curse: Colonialist Legacies Of The Magic Poem, Karen E. Lepri

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation investigates the conceptual relationships between poetry, magic, and race and their effects on both intellectual and creative practices from modernism through the post-war era. In doing so, this study works cross-disciplinarily, tracing early anthropological and sociological characterizations of primitive religion in connection to early-to-mid-twentieth-century literary study and writing. In working across disciplines at this particularly fungible moment in the history of the academy, this dissertation attempts to understand how the concurrent colonial global context effects the production and organization of knowledge just prior to and during modernism. It ultimately seeks to de-colonize literary thinking about poetry by performing …

Brrap Brrap Pew Pew: Representations Of Abortion In Adult Animated Television Comedy, Erika A. Byrnison Feb 2019

Brrap Brrap Pew Pew: Representations Of Abortion In Adult Animated Television Comedy, Erika A. Byrnison

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis documents and analyzes representation of abortion in American adult animated comedy, charging that it is under-examined and significant because representation on television in other genres has traditionally been absent or misleading. It covers theories on how pop culture communicates social norms, and posits that greater truthful representation of abortion in popular culture may be effective in reducing prevalent abortion stigma in the U.S. amongst the young by normalizing and more accurately representing the procedure. It reviews why our culture should be concerned about reducing abortion stigma in the U.S. It also identifies the “taboo ratings paradox,” wherein television …

Using Oximeters Heuristically: A Case For Emotionally Adaptive Pedagogy, Corinna Brathwaite Feb 2019

Using Oximeters Heuristically: A Case For Emotionally Adaptive Pedagogy, Corinna Brathwaite

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Part of teaching a learner includes the emotions of the teachers and learners, as emotional experiences arise throughout teaching | learning that can be better addressed and coped with. The Sheffer stroke (|) is used to emphasize that teaching and learning are both simultaneous and dependent on the social interaction of learning as both the roles, teacher and learner, are interchangeable. Emotional experiences of teachers and learners impact their emotional state of being. Reflective tools such as heuristics, emotion diaries, clickers, cogenerative dialogues, and oximeters have been used alongside video recordings to prompt awareness of experienced emotions. When educators intentionally …

Performing Desire In Times Square: Sailors, Hustlers And Masculinity, Kel R. Karpinski Feb 2019

Performing Desire In Times Square: Sailors, Hustlers And Masculinity, Kel R. Karpinski

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

From WWII to the early 1970s, New York City as a port town created a liminal space extending from the piers in the Brooklyn Navy Yard all the way to Times Square in Midtown Manhattan. In Times Square, through interactions on the street, in bars and in hotel rooms, desire and masculinity become a performance between and for men. The queerness of these performances lies in the fact that they fall outside of the norms of society both as same-sex encounters and because sex work is viewed as “deviant.” Further, these interactions eschew traditional labels and limits of desire and …

The Urban Domestic: Homosocial Domesticity, Literature, And Culture In 19th And 20th Century New York City, Krystyna Michael

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

My dissertation, The Urban Domestic: Homosocial Domesticity in the Literature and Culture of 19th- and 20th-Century New York City, explores the relationship between transformations in urban planning and domestic ideology through American literature. Specifically, I take up Walt Whitman and Edith Wharton as two authors with distinctly ambivalent relationships to the hetero-normative nuclear family and the ways New York’s built environment shaped and controlled the nation’s gender and sexual politics. My reading bridges a critical gap between studies of culture and its literary expressions on the one hand, and of architectural design and the urban environment …

Support For Resettling Refugees: The Role Of Fixed Versus Growth Mind-Sets, Shilpa Madan, Shankha Basu, Aneeta Rattan, Krishna Savani

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In six studies (N = 2,340), we identified one source of people’s differential support for resettling refugees in their country—their beliefs about whether the kind of person someone is can be changed (i.e., a growth mind-set) or is fixed (i.e., a fixed mind-set). U.S. and UK citizens who believed that the kind of person someone is can be changed were more likely to support resettling refugees in their country (Studies 1 and 2). Study 3 identified a causal relationship between the type of mind-set people hold and their support for resettling refugees. Importantly, people with a growth mind-set were more …

Indonesia And Central Asia: Romanticizing Authoritarian Regime In The Past?, Mochamad Aviandy

International Review of Humanities Studies

Even though countries in Central Asia and Indonesia seem to be unrelated, both actually have experienced authoritarian regime and implemented decentralization system after that regime collapsed. Nevertheless, decentralization along with non-authoritarian regime does not automatically bring the desired good result since a new authoritarian regime based on decentralization appears. As a result, the citizens long for the welfare of the centralism system. Before talking further about the comparison of both regions, it is better to have a good understanding of each region.

International Review of Humanities Studies

This article is an excerpt from an undergraduate thesis of the same title which focuses on A Series of Unfortunate Events, a children‟s book series by Lemony Snicket. This thesis explores how a culture of fear shapes childhood, which is represented in the series. By using qualitative textual analysis the research discusses how the series represent the way childhood is shaped by a culture of fear through the depiction of various characters and social institutions in the novels. This research also explores the author‟s attempts in challenging the notion that children are vulnerable by analyzing the Baudelaires‟ identity and vulnerability. …

Neurodevelopmental Milestones And Associated Behaviours Are Similar Among Healthy Children Across Diverse Geographical Locations, José Villar, Michelle Fernandes, Manorama Purwar, Eleonora Staines-Urias, Paola Di Nicola, Leila Cheikh Ismail, Roseline Ochieng, Fernando Barros, Maria Carvalho, Elaine Albernaz

Paediatrics and Child Health, East Africa

It is unclear whether early child development is, like skeletal growth, similar across diverse regions with adequate health and nutrition. We prospectively assessed 1307 healthy, well-nourished 2-year-old children of educated mothers, enrolled in early pregnancy from urban areas without major socioeconomic or environmental constraints, in Brazil, India, Italy, Kenya and UK. We used a specially developed psychometric tool, WHO motor milestones and visual tests. Similarities across sites were measured using variance components analysis and standardised site differences (SSD). In 14 of the 16 domains, the percentage of total variance explained by between-site differences ranged from 1.3% (cognitive score) to 9.2% …

A Rational Approach For Creating Peptides Mimicking Antibody Binding, Sameer Sachdeva, Hyun Joo, Jerry Tsai, Bhaskara Jasti, Xiaoling Li Jan 2019

A Rational Approach For Creating Peptides Mimicking Antibody Binding, Sameer Sachdeva, Hyun Joo, Jerry Tsai, Bhaskara Jasti, Xiaoling Li

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

This study reports a novel method to design peptides that mimic antibody binding. Using the Knob-Socket model for protein-protein interaction, the interaction surface between Cetuximab and EGFR was mapped. EGFR binding peptides were designed based on geometry and the probability of the mapped knob-sockets pairs. Designed peptides were synthesized and then characterized for binding specificity, affinity, cytotoxicity of drug-peptide conjugate and inhibition of phosphorylation. In cell culture studies, designed peptides specifically bind and internalize to EGFR overexpressing cells with three to four-fold higher uptake compared to control cells that do not overexpress EGFR. The designed peptide, Pep11, bound to EGFR …

Investigating Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions Of Collaboration During A Co-Teaching Experience, Corine M. Brown, Martha Viator Jan 2019

Investigating Teacher Candidates’ Perceptions Of Collaboration During A Co-Teaching Experience, Corine M. Brown, Martha Viator

College of Education Departmental Research

While teacher candidates learn the theoretical value of instructional collaboration in teacher preparation programs, they often lack professional preparation experiences to develop collaborative skills as educators in the classroom. To address this need, some teacher education programs have integrated co-teaching as part of their required clinical practice experiences. This case study research design examines two teacher candidates’ perceptions of collaboration as they engaged in co-planning and co-teaching in a secondary level, social studies classroom. Qualitative data sources including semi-structured interviews, co-planning sessions, field notes, formal classroom observations, and candidate-created lesson plans were collected. Case study data were coded for both …

Design For Living Complexities, Peter J. Taylor Jan 2019

Design For Living Complexities, Peter J. Taylor

Working Papers in Critical, Creative and Reflective Practice

Lectures from a 12-session course that addresses the intersection of design with critical thinking. Design in this course means intentionality in construction, which involves a range of materials, a sequence of steps, and principles that inform the choice of materials and the steps. Design also always involves putting people, as well as materials, into place. This happens by working with the known properties of people, as well as the known properties of material, and trying out new arrangements to work around their constraints (at least temporarily). Critical thinking, as I define it, involves understanding ideas and practices better when we …

Media Ethnography: Demands Alternative, Bishal Kumar Bhandari Mr Jan 2019

Media Ethnography: Demands Alternative, Bishal Kumar Bhandari Mr

The Qualitative Report

The heart and soul of ethnography lies in anthropological study within specific caste, ethnicity, and gender. In mass media research, the anthropological ethnography dominates through some of the aspects that focuses on geographical locations and ethnicity which is not relevant in the age of media and technology. The mass media has gained its own gravity, uniqueness, and distinctiveness at present as it fulfills the need and interest of individuals/society. As such fieldwork, participants, and positioning a debate within the realm of “anthropological ethnography” is not sufficient to understand the subjectivities of mass media. In such a context, this article analyzes …

Film, Dreams, And Mmorpgs: Cultural Leakage And Digital Gaming Literacy In Inception, Taylor Katz, J.D. Wallace Jan 2019

Film, Dreams, And Mmorpgs: Cultural Leakage And Digital Gaming Literacy In Inception, Taylor Katz, J.D. Wallace

Communication and Sociology

The confluence of art, technology, and texts is unavoidable and yet remains under-addressed in scholarship. Technological artifacts, while prevalent in digital gaming, are seldom examined in terms of their contribution to other artistic artifacts. Specifically, MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) as texts are rarely considered in terms of their relevance to digital and artistic literacy. Residing within are rich cultural discourses that address the entertainment of escapism and their affiliated connection to addiction, loss of identity, and violence resulting from prolonged immersion. Not surprisingly these tensions are reflected in other texts such as film. In the current examination, a …

"Singer-Songwriter" As Method: On Authenticity And Authorship Of Popular Music, Shuwen Qu, Danzhou Li Jan 2019

"Singer-Songwriter" As Method: On Authenticity And Authorship Of Popular Music, Shuwen Qu, Danzhou Li

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The construction and renewal of "authenticity" is the driving force for the development of the music industry. Given the prevalent impression of the singular authorial role seemingly integrating all the author voices, which conjures up heightened authenticity, "singer-songwriter" has always been an effective strategy in the production and consumption of popular music. Through a comparative analysis of Keightley's "two schools of philosophy" and Frith's "three discourses" in understanding musical authenticity, this paper concludes that the nature of authenticity is a matter of value judgment concerning aesthetics and sociology. By analyzing the thickening process of author voices in the formation of …

On Comparative Bibliography Of Western Aesthetics, Xian Zhou Jan 2019

On Comparative Bibliography Of Western Aesthetics, Xian Zhou

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Researches and resource construction about Western aesthetic bibliography are relatively weak in China, which has undermined Chinese studies of Western aesthetics. To tackle this problem, it is necessary to promote a comparative bibliography of Western aesthetics. This discipline would create a knowledge graph for both Western aesthetic classics' development in the West and their reception in China. A comparative analysis of the two knowledge graphs would reveal characteristics, hot topics, evolvement, and blind spots in Chinese studies of Western aesthetics. Through targeting these weaknesses by comparative studies, this discipline could also improve the status quo of translation, introduction, and resource …

Paris And The Worlding Of Minor/Small Literatures: The Case Of Basque Literature, Verbeke Frederik Jan 2019

Paris And The Worlding Of Minor/Small Literatures: The Case Of Basque Literature, Verbeke Frederik

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

According to Pascale Casanova, Paris would be the capital of "minor" literatures and of "small" languages (those which have difficulty circulating and are rarely translated). Whilst some Basque authors, such as Bernardo Atxaga or Kirmen Uribe, succeeded in being translated by prestigious Parisian publishing houses, others did not, although they tried, such as Itxaro Borda. How can a minor/small literature gain access to the capital of the "World Republic of Letters" (Casanova), enjoy a wider appeal and boost its worlding? Is it related to the literary image of the Basque Country as constructed by these authors? Is their consecration easier …

The Allure Of Moving Images: Unmasking Roland Barthes, Anni Shen Jan 2019

The Allure Of Moving Images: Unmasking Roland Barthes, Anni Shen

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Roland Barthes was notorious for his self-proclaimed "resistance" to cinema. It strikes as a paradox to that claim because Barthes undeniably left a rich seam of writing on the subject. This paper examines Barthes's complex thought on the allure of cinema by reading his two essays on it – "Garbo's Face" and "Leaving the Movie Theater" – along with Barthes' later train of thought and other post-structural ideas of the reenchantment. It proposes that Barthes's "resistance" to moving images should be reconsidered as a neutral strategy to mask his fascination with the allure of cinema.

Self-Identification And Repositioning Of The Tengananese In The Discourse Of Adat Community In Bali, I Wayan Suyadnya

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Along with the Hindu religion and culture, adat is recognized as a strong characteristic to describe the level of kebalian (Baliness). Adat appears as a control for the emergence of social, religious, and cultural problems. In practice, it also shows a strong dominance to discipline members of community to adhere to state regulations. However, the discourse on adat also provides an illustration of how adat can be used as a differentiating strategy in everyday customary practices. In performing an ethnographic study in Tenganan Pegringsingan, a community that in colonial literature is referred as “Bali Aga”, this article investigates how adat …
