An estimated 6 million children under the age of five in Nigeria (out of nearly 31 million) risk not reaching their full developmental potential. The dearth of context-relevant measures poses a challenge to the planning and implementation of effective interventions. This study assesses the utility of the Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI) in Nigeria. We used the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys to track progress among 3- to 4-year-old children (n = 11,073); 3-year-old, 51%; female, 49%. Using random calibration samples, the results from psychometric tests indicate that while over half of the children were on track in their development based …

Petrographic descriptions and point counting data, supported by SEM analysis, are presented for 89 sandstone samples of the Khabour Formation from the Khabour, Ora, Chalki Nasara, and Chia Zinnar outcrop sections in northern Iraq. These are compared with previously published data for subsurface samples from the Akkas-1 and Akkas-3 wells in western Iraq. Petrographic observations revealed that sublitharenites and subarkoses form the main sandstone types and may suggest a granitic source region with minor input from metamorphosed sediments. This is supported by the geochemical analysis gained from 66 sandstone samples. Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) and Index of Chemical Variability …

An Exploration Of Team Cohesion In Collegiate Esports Contexts, Kenneth Thomas Kresina Mar 2024

An Exploration Of Team Cohesion In Collegiate Esports Contexts, Kenneth Thomas Kresina

Theses and Dissertations

As the esports industry approaches adolescence, research on esports environments is only beginning. Despite the plethora of work done on team cohesion and coaching in traditional sports (e.g. Carron et al., 1985; Gardner et al., 1996, Pescosolido & Saavedra, 2012), current esports coaches are ill-equipped to lead and mentor a team of young adults. The present study aims to lay the groundwork for exploring team dynamics in esports through a team cohesion lens. A qualitative approach featuring semi-structured interviews from individual collegiate esports players across a variety of university-affiliated teams was adopted to explore players’ perceptions regarding their team environment …

Salt Production Via Hydrohalite Decomposition, Timothy Eisele Mar 2024

Salt Production Via Hydrohalite Decomposition, Timothy Eisele

Michigan Tech Patents

Salt production can include preparing hydrohalite particles by crystallization from saturated brine, adding the hydrohalite particles to the sale brine, thereby forming a hydrohalite-salt brine mixture, agitating the hydrohalite-salt brine mixture until the hydrohalite particles have decomposed into NaCl crystals, and filtering out the NaCl crystals from the salt brine. In some instances, an initial temperature of the salt brine prior to adding the hydrohalite particles is at least 0°C. In some instances, a ratio of salt brine to hydrohalite particles, by weight, is from 0.4 to 29.

Federal Indian Law As Method, Matthew L. M. Fletcher Mar 2024

Federal Indian Law As Method, Matthew L. M. Fletcher

Articles

Morton v. Mancari is well-known in Indian law circles as a foundation for the tribal self-determination era, which is generally understood to have begun in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The case involved an Act of Congress that required the federal “Indian Office” (now called the Bureau of Indian Affairs) to grant preference in employment to “Indians.” The case is typically understood as the basis for analyzing how federal statutes that apply exclusively to Indian people do not implicate the anti-discrimination principles of the United States Constitution. This understanding of the case, while correct, is too narrow.

517-525 W. 45 Llc V. New York City Dept. Of Hous. Preserv. & Dev.

All Decisions

The Appellate Division affirmed the dismissal of plaintiff's complaint under the doctrine of res judicata, citing a prior dismissal of a CPLR article 78 petition seeking the same relief regarding issuance of a cure completion certificate by HPD. The court found plaintiff had already litigated the issue of HPD's discretion under the cure agreement in the prior proceeding, barring re-litigation. Additionally, the court rejected plaintiff's claims of impossibility and failure to exhaust administrative remedies, affirming that these arguments did not undermine the res judicata effect of the earlier judgment.

Peer Collaborative Clinical Decision-Making In Virtual Reality Nursing Simualtion, Thye Peng Ngo Mar 2024

Peer Collaborative Clinical Decision-Making In Virtual Reality Nursing Simualtion, Thye Peng Ngo

Dissertations

In nursing education, it is common for students to collaborate and make decisions as a group in simulations. One of the vital nursing competencies is students' ability to make sound clinical judgments and decision-making in simulation. Teamwork among students in simulation significantly affects their critical thinking and clinical reasoning. However, how students collaborate and make decisions in simulation is a complex phenomenon and not well studied and understood. In addition, most existing decision-making frameworks, such as Tanner's Clinical Judgment Model and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing's Clinical Judgment Measurement Model, focus solely on individual decision-making. Alternatively, teamwork …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

A number of coating techniques have been used to improve the processability of high explosives. These techniques are typically used for developing compositions, such as boosters and fillers. The most typically used technique is the "solvent-slurry coating". Several compositions of polymer-bonded explosives have been industrialized using this technique. The NUPC-6 polymer-bonded powder composition of hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine is optimized using the solvent-slurry coating. It involved multiple processes, i.e., preparing a slurry of high explosives in an aqueous phase, dissolving the modified polymer binder in an organic solvent, maintaining both the solvent and slurry at controlled temperatures, introducing polymer binder solution and ingredients …

A Partial Drp1 Knockout Improves Autophagy Flux Independent Of Mitochondrial Function, Rebecca Z. Fan, Carolina Sportelli, Yanhao Lai, Said S. Salehe, Jennifer R. Pinnell, Harry J. Brown, Jason R. Richardson, Shouqing Luo, Kim Tieu

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1) plays a critical role in mitochondrial dynamics. Partial inhibition of this protein is protective in experimental models of neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. The protective mechanism has been attributed primarily to improved mitochondrial function. However, the observations that Drp1 inhibition reduces protein aggregation in such neurological disorders suggest the involvement of autophagy. To investigate this potential novel protective mechanism of Drp1 inhibition, a model with impaired autophagy without mitochondrial involvement is needed. Methods: We characterized the effects of manganese (Mn), which causes parkinsonian-like symptoms in humans, on autophagy and mitochondria by …

Development And Evaluation Of Novel Applications For The Ethos Cbct-Guided Online Adaptive Radiotherapy System, Nour Nasser Mar 2024

Development And Evaluation Of Novel Applications For The Ethos Cbct-Guided Online Adaptive Radiotherapy System, Nour Nasser

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Radiation therapy (RT) is an important pillar of modern cancer treatment, in neoadjuvant, curative, adjuvant, and palliative settings. The physics underlying RT is ionizing radiation that produces charged particles, which deposit their energy in the tissues they pass through. This energy results in unrepairable DNA damage resulting in the death of cancer tissue. The aim of RT is to deliver the desired radiation dose to the tumor while maximizing normal tissue sparing. Over the past decades, physics, engineering, and computational improvements has allowed advancement of external beam RT techniques, for example from 2D RT to 3D RT to now intensity …

Surface And Bulk Properties Of Multi-Component Metal Alloys, Frank A. Mckay Iii Mar 2024

Surface And Bulk Properties Of Multi-Component Metal Alloys, Frank A. Mckay Iii

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

While HEAs have been studied extensively for their material properties, their potential as catalysts remains widely unexplored. To explore the feasibility of CoCrFeNi as a catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction, the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) experiments are compared to electrochemical experiments and theoretical calculations. XPS shows that this surface forms passive oxides with a propensity of Cr > Fe > Co, with no evidence of Ni oxidation. From comparison to calculations, it is shown that the electrochemical activity is enhanced in a partially oxidized state. The lack of Ni oxidation suggests that …

Germline variation and somatic alterations contribute to the molecular profile of cancers. We combine RNA with whole genome sequencing across 1,218 cancer patients to determine the extent germline structural variants (SVs) impact expression of nearby genes. For hundreds of genes, recurrent and common germline SV breakpoints within 100 kb associate with increased or decreased expression in tumors spanning various tissues of origin. A significant fraction of germline SV expression associations involves duplication of intergenic enhancers or 3' UTR disruption. Genes altered by both somatic and germline SVs include ATRX and CEBPA. Genes essential in cancer cell lines include BARD1 and …

Cooperative interactions between amino acids are critical for protein function. A genetic reflection of cooperativity is epistasis, which is when a change in the amino acid at one position changes the sequence requirements at another position. To assess epistasis within an enzyme active site, we utilized CTX-M β-lactamase as a model system. CTX-M hydrolyzes β-lactam antibiotics to provide antibiotic resistance, allowing a simple functional selection for rapid sorting of modified enzymes. We created all pairwise mutations across 17 active site positions in the β-lactamase enzyme and quantitated the function of variants against two β-lactam antibiotics using next-generation sequencing. Context-dependent sequence …

[18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) and computed tomography (CT) are indispensable components in modern medicine. Although PET can provide additional diagnostic value, it is costly and not universally accessible, particularly in low-income countries. To bridge this gap, we have developed a conditional generative adversarial network pipeline that can produce FDG-PET from diagnostic CT scans based on multi-center multi-modal lung cancer datasets (n = 1,478). Synthetic PET images are validated across imaging, biological, and clinical aspects. Radiologists confirm comparable imaging quality and tumor contrast between synthetic and actual PET scans. Radiogenomics analysis further proves that the dysregulated cancer hallmark pathways of …

Across the animal kingdom, visual predation relies on motion-sensing neurons in the superior colliculus (SC) and its orthologs. These neurons exhibit complex stimulus preferences, including direction selectivity, which is thought to be critical for tracking the unpredictable escape routes of prey. The source of direction selectivity in the SC is contested, and its contributions to predation have not been tested experimentally. Here, we use type-specific cell removal to show that narrow-field (NF) neurons in the mouse SC guide predation. In vivo recordings demonstrate that direction-selective responses of NF cells are independent of recently reported stimulus-edge effects. Monosynaptic retrograde tracing reveals …

A Method To The Madness Iraqi Strategy And Diplomacy In The Persian Gulfwar, James D. Smith Mar 2024

A Method To The Madness Iraqi Strategy And Diplomacy In The Persian Gulfwar, James D. Smith

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

Most Americans are familiar with the essentials of the Persian Gulf War: Iraq invaded Kuwait, triggering a massive buildup of American troops in Saudi Arabia. These troops eventually invaded Kuwait and drove out the Iraqis, who fled in terror before the American juggernaut. Beyond this, few Americans know much. The war is, perhaps, too recent to have developed the wide interest that currently exists in older conflicts such as the Civil War or World War II; the textbook-worthy strategies employed by General Norman Schwartzkopf's forces therefore go largely unnoticed by the public at large.
