Distinguishing Leukemic Cells Using Fractal Chromatin Patterns And Machine Learning, Abigail Gordhamer, Ryan Cordner, Paul Young
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024
One of the most important tests in the clinical laboratory is the Complete Blood Count, which involves identifying the white blood cells in a patient’s blood. The respective counts of the different white blood cell types correlate with various states of health and disease and are critical to diagnosing diseases such as leukemia. Leukemic cells (blasts) are considered especially difficult to distinguish, and it is of the upmost importance that these cells are identified correctly. To aid in the process of leukemic cell identification, we quantified fractal patterns in the chromatin of white blood cells and used the data to …

Technical Data Package For Sysmlv2 Vignettes, Allen W. Dukes
Technical Data Package For Sysmlv2 Vignettes, Allen W. Dukes
Student Publications
This Technical Data Package (TDP) thoroughly compiles instructions, concepts, and solutions for eight SysMLv2 vignettes. Each vignette illustrates methods to solve complex system modeling challenges. The initial concept for each vignette can drive the use and evaluation of a custom SysMLv2 modeling tool as shown in [1]. They can support a baseline set of tasks to compare usability with other SysMLv2 modeling software tools.
The document starts with three pairs of vignettes for modeling a hypothetical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operated with a Virtual Reality (VR) headset derived from AFIT WKSP 696. The final pair of vignettes focus on two …

Quantitative Shotgun Proteomic Analysis Of Bacteria After Overexpression Of Recombinant Spider Miniature Spidroin, Masp1, Kathryn Randene, J. Alexander H. Mendoza, Michael Ysit, Craig Vierra
Pacific Faculty Work
Spider silk has extraordinary mechanical properties, displaying high tensile strength, elasticity, and toughness. Given the high performance of natural fibers, one of the long-term goals of the silk community is to manufacture large-scale synthetic spider silk. This process requires vast quantities of recombinant proteins for wet-spinning applications. Attempts to synthesize large amounts of native size recombinant spidroins in diverse cell types have been unsuccessful. In these studies, we design and express recombinant miniature black widow MaSp1 spidroins in bacteria that incorporate the N-terminal and C-terminal domain (NTD and CTD), along with varying numbers of codon-optimized internal block repeats. Following spidroin …

Ultrasound Imaging Of Abductor Hallucis Volume Demonstrated By Strong Agreement With Mri, Jacob Willes, Aaron W. Johnson
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024
Due to the complexity of assessing the individual strength and function of certain deep small muscles within the body such intrinsic foot muscles, ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may provide a means to appropriately evaluate these muscles. Assessing foot muscles using US and MRI provides a unique and important model to compare muscle volume. Since intrinsic foot muscles are crucial for function and mobility while influencing quality of life, being able to accurately measure foot muscle volume is important. For example, the tracking of atrophy or hypertrophy due to disease or therapeutic intervention. While MRI is often considered …

Estimating Polarization Purity With Noise, Alex Kostinski, Dan Kestner, Jothiram Vivekanandan
Estimating Polarization Purity With Noise, Alex Kostinski, Dan Kestner, Jothiram Vivekanandan
Michigan Tech Publications
We formulate a problem of estimating and monitoring mismatch (unwanted departure from orthogonality) of two ostensibly orthogonal polarization channels in a fully polarimetric general device such as a polarimetric weather radar. A statistical approach is proposed by using thermal noise or, more generally, a 'polarimetric noise' class of sources. The suitable noise class of distributions is shown to be rooted in the complex multivariate Gaussian probability density function (pdf), the latter possessing a uniform pdf on the Poincare sphere (PS), with a probability measure given by a fractional surface area. To that end, we develop a parameter to estimate polarization …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
We examined gelatinous zooplankton from off eastern Australia for lepocreadiid trematode metacercariae. From 221 specimens of 17 species of cnidarian medusae and 218 specimens of four species of ctenophores, infections were found in seven cnidarian and two ctenophore species. Metacercariae were distinguished using cox1 mtDNA, ITS2 rDNA and morphology. We identified three species of Prodistomum Linton, 1910 [P. keyam Bray & Cribb, 1996, P. orientale (Layman, 1930), and Prodistomum Type 3], two species of Opechona Looss, 1907 [O. kahawai Bray & Cribb, 2003 and O. cf. olssoni], and Cephalolepidapedon saba Yamaguti, 1970. Two species were found in cnidarians …

The Gyrokinetic Dispersion Relation Of Microtearing Modes In Collisionless Toroidal Plasmas, Benjamin D G Chandran, A A. Schekochihin
Faculty Publications
We solve the linearized gyrokinetic equation, quasineutrality condition and Ampere's law to obtain the dispersion relation of microtearing modes (MTMs) in collisionless low- $\beta$ toroidal plasmas. Consistent with past studies, we find that MTMs are driven unstable by the electron temperature gradient and that this instability drive is mediated by magnetic drifts. The dispersion relation that we derive can be evaluated numerically very quickly and may prove useful for devising strategies to mitigate MTM instability in fusion devices.

This industrial research focuses on the implementation and development of a productive process for an automotive structural component (Shock tower) manufactured by a high-pressure die casting (HPDC) process made of aluminum alloy AuralTM-5. This aluminum alloy has been considered in diverse automotive and aerospace components that do not require heat treatment due to its mechanical properties as cast material (F temper). On the other hand, AuralTM-5 has been designed for processing as HPDC because it is an alloy with good fluidity, making it ideal for large castings with thin-wall thicknesses, like safety structural components such as rails, supports, rocker panels, …

INTRODUCTION: Proteinuria is a modifiable risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression in children. Finerenone, a selective, non-steroidal, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (MRA) has been approved to treat adults with CKD associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) following results from the phase III clinical trials FIDELIO-DKD (NCT02540993) and FIGARO-DKD (NCT02545049). In a pre-specified pooled analysis of both studies (N = 13,026), finerenone was shown to have an acceptable safety profile and was efficacious in decreasing the risk of adverse kidney and cardiovascular outcomes and of proteinuria.
OBJECTIVE: FIONA and the associated open-label extension (OLE) study aim to demonstrate that …
The Homotopy Cardinality Of The Representation Category, Justin Murray
The Homotopy Cardinality Of The Representation Category, Justin Murray
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Given a Legendrian knot in (R^3, ker(dz − ydx)) one can assign a combinatorial invariants called ruling polynomials. These invariants have been shown to recover not only a (normalized) count of augmentations but are also closely related to a categorical count of augmentations in the form of the homotopy cardinality of the augmentation category. In this article, we prove that that the homotopy cardinality of the n-dimensional represen- tation category is a multiple of the n-colored ruling polynomial. Along the way, we establish that two n-dimensional representations are equivalent in the representation category if they are “conjugate homotopic”. We also …

Exploring Extended Reality In An Aqueous Processing Test Bed For Nuclear Material, Sam Wald
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research aided in the ongoing creation of an extended reality training experience for Beartooth, an aqueous processing test bed for nuclear material, by exploring what will be comfortable and effective for users of the experience. Participants consisted of staff members from Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and authorized members of the Augmented Learning Lab at BYU. We conducted usability testing with participants who were given extended reality (XR) equipment to explore the Beartooth virtual training system. We also performed a heuristic evaluation on the system using an augmented reality evaluation checklist. Findings were discussed with the INL team and recommendations …

Spinal metastases can result in severe neurologic compromise and decreased overall survival. Despite treatment advances, local disease progression is frequent, highlighting the need for novel therapies. Tumor treating fields (TTFields) impair tumor cell replication and are influenced by properties of surrounding tissue. We hypothesized that bone's dielectric properties will enhance TTFields-mediated suppression of tumor growth in spinal metastasis models. Computational modeling of TTFields intensity was performed following surgical resection of a spinal metastasis and demonstrated enhanced TTFields intensity within the resected vertebral body. Additionally, luciferase-tagged human KRIB osteosarcoma and A549 lung adenocarcinoma cell lines were cultured in demineralized bone grafts …
Reconceptualizing Museum Decolonization: A Proposal For The Repatriation Of Agency, Bacci Francesca
Reconceptualizing Museum Decolonization: A Proposal For The Repatriation Of Agency, Bacci Francesca
All Works
This paper discusses how cultural governance leadership can adopt a decolonizing operational model for museums, to the advantage of all stakeholders. Key to the proposed framework is foregrounding the repatriation of ex-colonies’ agency as preparatory to the possible repatriation of their objects. The model hypothesizes the creation of an international alliance of museums, ministries of culture and universities/research institutes to form an accrediting body that certifies the status of “decolonized museum”, with appointed national curators or community representatives from each former colony. These professionals can be temporarily hired by institutions worldwide, to support the writing, displaying and storytelling revisions necessary …
Stare Decisis And Remedy, Melissa Murray
Stare Decisis And Remedy, Melissa Murray
Duke Law Journal
Much ink has been spilled on the Roberts Court’s approach to stare decisis and precedent. Such commentary is hardly surprising. In just the last five years, the Court has overruled extant precedents on issues that range from abortion and jury convictions to property rights and public unions. It has also substantially narrowed and limited existing precedents, curbing the reach of earlier decisions in ways that disrupt and distort the jurisprudential landscape.
Some view the Court’s uneven approach to precedent as ideologically determined. As these critics maintain, the Court adheres to precedents that are consistent with the views of its six-member …
The Return Of Three-Judge Constitutional Courts, Matt Queen
The Return Of Three-Judge Constitutional Courts, Matt Queen
Duke Law Journal
State courts wield the authority to elevate state constitutional protections above those afforded by the U.S. Constitution. That power is great—so great that some legislatures have intervened in constitutional adjudication, purportedly to undermine forum shopping and check a single judge’s influence. Accordingly, North Carolina and Tennessee require that three-judge trial courts hear constitutional challenges to state laws. These courts echo twentieth-century congressional efforts to trim federal courts’ equitable jurisdiction. They also present new and familiar drawbacks spawned by their federal ancestors.
This Note examines these new constitutional courts through several lenses: their historical context, political development, advantages, and drawbacks. Although …

In a residential landlord-tenant action, the tenant successfully defended against eviction by establishing a prima facie case of a rent-impairing violation, specifically a roof leak. The court found that the landlord's evidence to refute the violation was weak. However, the court also denied the tenant's request for attorney fees and security deposit return.
