Pedagogical Development For Non-Degreed Career And Technical Education Adjunct Faculty: A Phenomenological Study, Robert M. Huffman
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study is to explore how non-degreed career and technical adjunct faculty members nourish their pedagogical skillsets so that they can teach at the community college level. Throughout this research study, nourishment of pedagogical skillsets is generally defined as professional development. The theories guiding this study are Mezirow’s transformational learning theory as it focuses on transitioning into a new role, and Tinto’s theory of dropout, as it focuses on persistence and success. This qualitative study employs Moustakas’ transcendental phenomenology research design. The qualitative research design was chosen due to the nature of the purpose …

Abusive Management And Workplace Trauma In The Mental Health Field: A Phenomenological Study, Amanda White
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Workplace trauma can take place in various forms including abusive supervision or management, workplace bullying, vicarious traumatization, violence, compassion burnout, and workplace stress. For the most part, the perpetrators of these incidents can either be strangers, peers, or management within the organization. The aftermath of workplace trauma can be detrimental to a person’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health and cause work-related issues. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the personal experiences of those in the mental health field who have been traumatized in the workplace specifically by the management within the organization. This study was directed …
A Structured Handoff Report And Its Impact On Patient Experience, Gary N. Hicks
A Structured Handoff Report And Its Impact On Patient Experience, Gary N. Hicks
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Over the past decade, a fast-moving industry has challenged hospital health systems. Today, hospitals are measured on the effectiveness of healthcare delivery ensuring efficiency, quality, and safety. In addition to the delivery of effective healthcare, hospitals are now accountable for the overall patient experience, a system known as value-based purchasing. Value-based purchasing directly impacts the overall financial status of any healthcare organization and is based on data collected from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). Nursing practice can significantly influence the overall impact and outcomes of value-based purchasing by helping with an improvement of HCAHPS. One …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Marine artificial structures (MAS), including oil and gas installations (O&G) and offshore wind farms (OWFs), have a finite operational period. Selecting the most suitable decommissioning options when reaching end-of-life remains a challenge, in part because their effects are still largely undetermined. Whether decommissioned structures could act (sensu ‘function’) as artificial reefs (ARs) and provide desired ecological benefits is of particular interest. Here we use a meta-analysis approach of 531 effect sizes from 109 articles to assess the ecological effects of MAS, comparing O&G and OWFs to shipwrecks and ARs, with a view to inform their decommissioning. This synthesis demonstrates that …

Recreational Use Of Protected Areas: Spatiotemporal Insights From The Wikiloc Mobile App, Jorge Costa, Alberto Gomes, Martin Stokes, Miguel Saraiva
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Managing the rising number of visitors to protected areas (PAs) without compromising their environmental goals is a critical challenge that requires a complete understanding of how and when visitors use these spaces. Georeferenced data from fitness-tracking apps can provide detailed information about the visitor’s spatiotemporal behaviour inside PAs, but its potential is still underexplored. This study uses georeferenced data, from Wikiloc, to analyse the visitors’ spatiotemporal behaviour in Alvão Natural Park, Portugal. Our findings show that: 52% of the visitors’ use is concentrated around the Fisgas de Ermelo Waterfall; photos’ hotspots coincide with the waterfalls and viewpoints facing them; 2% …

Music Education For All: A Study Of Non-Traditional Music Courses In Secondary Schools, Ormond L. Moore
Music Education For All: A Study Of Non-Traditional Music Courses In Secondary Schools, Ormond L. Moore
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Most elementary schools provide music education to all students at least once a week. Music education has been proven to be beneficial to all students. After elementary school, this benefit is no longer afforded to all students. Many secondary schools only offer music education in the form of ensembles such as band, orchestra, or chorus. Students who do not have the finger dexterity to play an instrument or the aural accuracy to match pitch have no place to receive music education after elementary general music class. Non-traditional music courses such as music technology or music media and industry provide all …
Moderated Mediated Model Of Religiosity, God Image, And Self Compassion, Amanda Strivings
Moderated Mediated Model Of Religiosity, God Image, And Self Compassion, Amanda Strivings
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Religious engagement can be a protective factor as well as contribute to negative mental health outcomes in religious populations. Early experiences in the parent-child relationship influence how individuals view God, which influences how they emotionally experience and engage with religion. Previous research has explored the relationships between religiosity, view of God, and self-compassion. This study explored the influence of three separate views of God on the cross-generational maintenance of religiosity and as sociocultural factors that influence self-compassion within the context of religiosity. Results supported several direct and indirect relationships. The analysis included one simple mediation model to explore the mediating …
How Prerequisite Skills Training Affects Math Achievement Scores For Students With Learning Disabilities: A Quasi-Experimental Control Group Study, Timothy Reedy
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design, while controlling for math achievement pretest scores, was to investigate the impact prerequisite skills instruction has on math achievement scores for ninth-grade pre-algebra students with specific learning disabilities (SLDs) in math. While there have been several studies on how prerequisite skills affect students with learning disabilities in elementary school, very little research has extended into high school. Convenience sampling was used in the study and included 70 students from a high school that serves students across the state of Pennsylvania. The Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) was used …

Emulating Paul’S Ministry Leadership In A Diverse And Changing Cultural Landscape, Mark J. Lee
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this Doctor of Ministry project is to train ministry leaders by studying the cross-cultural leadership characteristics of Apostle Paul. Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church is part of the sad statistic of traditional churches that have been declining for the past thirty years. This will continue unless leaders of the church embrace the diverse culture and nature of the surrounding community. Cross-cultural leadership is needed in this time of multi-cultural communities and there is no one better than Paul to demonstrate this indispensable cross-cultural ministry paradigm. If leaders at Central are trained and motivated to embrace Paul’s cross-cultural …

This study applied Maslow’s theory to law enforcement by examining how the media and political rhetoric is impacting the support officers receive from the communities that they serve as well as the agencies that they work, and how this support is impacting the number of officers leaving the profession. The study sampled law enforcement officers located in western and central North Carolina and involved both large urban agencies and small rural agencies. The Professional Quality of Life (ProQoL) survey was used …
Blacks' Intergenerational Trauma Triggered By Police Misconduct, Anselma Johnayala
Blacks' Intergenerational Trauma Triggered By Police Misconduct, Anselma Johnayala
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
A plethora of studies on intergenerational trauma and a nascent body of studies regarding policing are amalgamated in this phenomenological research approach. This phenomenological study aimed to understand the adverse experiences of Black individuals’ interactions with law enforcement and how these involvements contribute to the transmission of trauma. The intergenerational trauma of Blacks’ experiences could be processed through Critical Race Theory (CRT), Personal Construct Theory (PCT), and Bowen’s Multigenerational Family Systems Theory (BMFST). Each theory explains the relationship between a person’s experiences, the generational response and functioning, and the existence of racial bias as proliferated in the oppression of one …
Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Toolkit To Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening In A Federally Qualified Health Center, Stephanie Mckithan
Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Toolkit To Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening In A Federally Qualified Health Center, Stephanie Mckithan
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The change in payor fee-for-service to value-based care is creating an opportunity for primary care clinics nationally to adjust their focus to meeting key clinical quality measures during patient encounters. Colorectal screening is one of such quality measures. Previous research has shown that early detection saves lives. The guidelines have lowered the recommended age of initial screening to 45 due to the incidence of colorectal cancer in younger patients. But with all the objectives that need to be met in the limited time of the visit, how can nurse practitioners improve their efficiency? This evidence-based project assessed the implementation of …

Language Beliefs And Practices Of Caregivers In The Deep South, Maria Maldonado
Language Beliefs And Practices Of Caregivers In The Deep South, Maria Maldonado
LSU Master's Theses
The 30 million word gap refers to the disparity in early language exposure between low socioeconomic status (SES) children and their higher SES peers; a gap that is thought to negatively impact children’s language development and future academic success. Although many early intervention approaches have proven effective in promoting language development among low SES children, they often fall short in terms of cultural responsiveness, which in turn affects caregiver buy-in. Culturally and linguistically diverse children disproportionately live in poverty, as such there is a need for research to inform more responsive interventions that take a strengths- based approach and build …
Birkhoff Summation Of Irrational Rotations: A Surprising Result For The Golden Mean, Heather Moore
Birkhoff Summation Of Irrational Rotations: A Surprising Result For The Golden Mean, Heather Moore
University Honors Theses
This thesis presents a surprising result that the difference in certain sums of constant rotations by the golden mean approaches exactly 1/5. Specifically, we focus on the Birkhoff sums of these rotations, with the number of terms equal to squared Fibonacci numbers. The proof relies on the properties of continued fraction approximants, Vajda's identity and the explicit formula for the Fibonacci numbers.

Genomic rearrangements are a hallmark of most childhood tumors, including medulloblastoma, one of the most common brain tumors in children, but their causes remain largely unknown. Here, we show that PiggyBac transposable element derived 5 (Pgbd5) promotes tumor development in multiple developmentally accurate mouse models of Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) medulloblastoma. Most Pgbd5-deficient mice do not develop tumors, while maintaining normal cerebellar development. Ectopic activation of SHH signaling is sufficient to enforce cerebellar granule cell progenitor-like cell states, which exhibit Pgbd5-dependent expression of distinct DNA repair and neurodevelopmental factors. Mouse medulloblastomas expressing Pgbd5 have increased numbers of somatic structural DNA rearrangements, …
Angles And Angels: Political Unity And Spiritual Identity In Anglo-Saxon England, Susannah Morrison
Angles And Angels: Political Unity And Spiritual Identity In Anglo-Saxon England, Susannah Morrison
The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing
The development of nationalism in Europe is a contested process, and most historians conclude that nationalist sentiments did not arise in the shattered remnants of the Western Roman Empire until the twelfth century. However, a national consciousness developed in England long before this date. Although it was a fundamentally abstract concept, largely limited to the intellectual domain of the highly educated elite, English national identity in the Anglo-Saxon period was a vibrant and powerful cultural force. Memorably articulated by the Venerable Bede in the eighth century, this proto-national sentiment identified the Angles-the Germanic tribes who had invaded and occupied Britain …

Video game modifications, or "mods," made by third parties or fans of a video game, have reached the limelight of mainstream video game popularity. The internet has become a space for mod makers to share their creations with any user, without the need for physical modifications to a game cartridge or circuit board. Instead, mod software allows a player to install mods with ease and is extremely accessible, yet under the law, the legal status of video game mods remains uncertain. Video game mods are seen as infringing the copyright of the original game. This Note examines the application of …

Marking The Metaverse: The Implication Of Nfts On Trademark Law, Hanna Esserman
Journal of Intellectual Property Law
Within the last decade, internet users have witnessed the birth, rise, and mainstream popularity of the Non-Fungible Token, or “NFT.” Nearly ten years after the creation of the first NFT, there is now a wave of first impression litigation surfacing which questions the implications of NFTs on intellectual property law. This Note analyzes the intersection of Non-Fungible Tokens and trademark law in the United States.
Until recently, it has been unclear whether Non-Fungible Tokens are eligible to be protected under long-standing federal trademark laws. This includes allegations of NFTs infringing upon existing trademarks, as well as trademarked NFTs being infringed …

Distinguishing Leukemic Cells Using Fractal Chromatin Patterns And Machine Learning, Abigail Gordhamer, Ryan Cordner, Paul Young
Library/Life Sciences Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024
One of the most important tests in the clinical laboratory is the Complete Blood Count, which involves identifying the white blood cells in a patient’s blood. The respective counts of the different white blood cell types correlate with various states of health and disease and are critical to diagnosing diseases such as leukemia. Leukemic cells (blasts) are considered especially difficult to distinguish, and it is of the upmost importance that these cells are identified correctly. To aid in the process of leukemic cell identification, we quantified fractal patterns in the chromatin of white blood cells and used the data to …
