Smoking Cessation In Primary Care Using The 5 A’S Model Of Motivational Interviewing: A Quality Improvement Project, Lauren M. Violette

DNP Projects

Significance and Background: Tobacco use is one of the leading causes of preventable death in the United States, greatly contributing to morbidity and mortality. Motivational Interviewing (MI), a counseling style, has been shown to increase motivation for change in people. Successful intervention for behavior modification starts with identifying a person’s readiness for change. The 5 A’s model is an established form of motivational interviewing that addresses the five major steps of intervention: Ask, Advise, Assess, Assist, and Arrange. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) endorses the use of the 5 A’s brief tobacco intervention to protect the public’s health from …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Transferability of Adversarial Examples is of Central Importance to Transfer-Based Black-Box Adversarial Attacks. Previous Works for Generating Transferable Adversarial Examples Focus on Attacking Given Pretrained Surrogate Models While the Connections between Surrogate Models and Adversarial Trasferability Have Been overlooked. in This Paper, We Propose Lipschitz Regularized Surrogate (LRS) for Transfer-Based Black-Box Attacks, a Novel Approach that Transforms Surrogate Models towards Favorable Adversarial Transferability. using Such Transformed Surrogate Models, Any Existing Transfer-Based Black-Box Attack Can Run Without Any Change, Yet Achieving Much Better Performance. Specifically, We Impose Lipschitz Regularization on the Loss Landscape of Surrogate Models to Enable a Smoother …

Patchy particles occupy an increasingly important space in soft matter research due to their ability to assemble into intricate phases and states. Being able to fine-tune the interactions among these particles is essential to understanding the principles governing the self-assembly processes. However, current fabrication techniques often yield patches that deviate chemically and physically from the native particles, impeding the identification of the driving forces behind self-assembly. To overcome this challenge, we propose a new approach to synthesizing spherical colloids with a well-defined rough patch on their surface. By treating polystyrene microspheres with vapors of a good solvent, here an acetone-water …

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) main Protease (Mpro) is an enzyme that cleaves viral polyproteins translated from the viral genome and is critical for viral replication. Mpro is a target for anti-SARS-CoV-2 drug development, and multiple Mpro crystals complexed with competitive inhibitors have been reported. In this study, we aimed to develop an Mpro consensus pharmacophore as a tool to expand the search for inhibitors. We generated a consensus model by aligning and summarizing pharmacophoric points from 152 bioactive conformers of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro inhibitors. Validation against a library of conformers from a subset of ligands showed that …

High-Accuracy Reconstruction Of Missing Ground-Penetrating Radar Signals Based On Projection Onto Convex Sets In The Curvelet Domain, Wu Qiming, Wang Honghua, Xi Yuhe, Wang Yucheng

Coal Geology & Exploration

Influence by the acquisition environments and instrument performance, missing signals and destructed channels are inevitable in measured ground-penetrating radar (GPR) profiles. They can cause event discontinuity of reflected and diffracted waves generated by targets, severely impairing the accuracy and resolution of subsequent processing and imaging. Hence, by combining the projection onto convex sets (POCS) algorithm extensively used in image processing with the curvelet transform exhibiting high sparsity, this study proposed a high-accuracy reconstruction method for missing GPR signals based on curvelet-domain POCS. Building on the compressive sensing theory, the objective function for missing signal reconstruction based on discrete curvelet transform …

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Language comprehension is often affected in individuals with post-stroke aphasia. However, deficits in auditory comprehension are not fully correlated with deficits in reading comprehension and the mechanisms underlying this dissociation remain unclear. This distinction is important for understanding language mechanisms, predicting long-term impairments and future development of treatment interventions. Using comprehensive auditory and reading measures from a large cohort of individuals with aphasia, we evaluated the relationship between aphasia type and reading comprehension impairments, the relationship between auditory versus reading comprehension deficits and the crucial neuroanatomy supporting the dissociation between post-stroke reading and auditory deficits. Scores from the Western Aphasia …

Dopamine Lesions Alter The Striatal Encoding Of Single-Limb Gait, Long Yang, Deepak Singla, Alexander K Wu, Katy A Cross, Sotiris C Masmanidis

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The striatum serves an important role in motor control, and neurons in this area encode the body's initiation, cessation, and speed of locomotion. However, it remains unclear whether the same neurons also encode the step-by-step rhythmic motor patterns of individual limbs that characterize gait. By combining high-speed video tracking, electrophysiology, and optogenetic tagging, we found that a sizable population of both D1 and D2 receptor expressing medium spiny projection neurons (MSNs) were phase-locked to the gait cycle of individual limbs in mice. Healthy animals showed balanced limb phase-locking between D1 and D2 MSNs, while dopamine depletion led to stronger phase-locking …

Caldera-forming eruptions of silicic volcanic systems are among the most devastating events on Earth. By contrast, post-collapse volcanic activity initiating new caldera cycles is generally considered less hazardous. Formed after Santorini’s latest caldera-forming eruption of ~1600 bce, the Kameni Volcano in the southern Aegean Sea enables the eruptive evolution of a recharging multi-cyclic caldera to be reconstructed. Kameni’s eruptive record has been documented by onshore products and historical descriptions of mainly effusive eruptions dating back to 197 bce. Here we combine high-resolution seismic reflection data with cored lithologies from International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 398 at four sites to determine …

Investigation Of Rare Earth Element Binding To A Surface-Bound Affinity Peptide Derived From Ef-Hand Loop I Of Lanmodulin, Geeta Verma, Jacob D. Hostert, Alex A. Summerville, Christine E. Duval, Julie N. Renner

Faculty Scholarship

Bioinspired strategies have been given extensive attention for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from waste streams because of their high selectivity, regeneration potential, and sustainability as well as low cost. Lanmodulin protein is an emerging biotechnology that is highly selective for REE binding. Mimicking lanmodulin with shorter peptides is advantageous because they are simpler and potentially easier to manipulate and optimize. Lanmodulin-derived peptides have been found to bind REEs, but their properties have not been explored when immobilized on solid substrates, which is required for many advanced separation technologies. Here, two peptides, LanM1 and scrambled LanM1, are designed …

S ( M ) Othering: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Republican Motherhood, Caroline King

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines seven Republican rhetors who utilize motherhood as a rhetorical strategy in speeches between the years of 1972 and 2020. Specifically, speeches, newsletters, and debate transcripts are analyzed using four theoretical lenses to curate an archetype of the “Republican Mother” – a concept constructed of an amalgamation of the historic “mother of the republic” from the nation’s conception and the ideological values assigned to women within the Republican party, such as traditional gender and spousal roles. I argue that it is the unique combination of womanhood, motherhood, and Republicanism that creates a unique rhetorical strategy seen in these …
