Dispossession Of Ancestral Land: Effect Of Displacement On Indigenous Peoples' Life Satifaction, Kaitlyn Bird, Hailey Shangin, Alana Smutz, Julisa Lopez, Adam Farero, Stephanie Fryberg Apr 2024

Dispossession Of Ancestral Land: Effect Of Displacement On Indigenous Peoples' Life Satifaction, Kaitlyn Bird, Hailey Shangin, Alana Smutz, Julisa Lopez, Adam Farero, Stephanie Fryberg

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

North America's history of forced displacement and relocation of Indigenous tribes continues to affect contemporary Indigenous peoples (Wolfe, 2006). As climate change, socioeconomic disparities, and industry encroachment shape displacement, Indigenous people continue to be negatively impacted (Covey, 2021). The current work explores how displacement impacts life satisfaction for Indigenous Peoples, and whether cultural embeddedness modifies this relationship. Using the Indigenous Climate Justice survey (N=282), regression analysis illustrates that those who have not been displaced generally report higher life satisfaction than those who have been displaced (β=-0.255, SE= 0.108 p= 0.019). Lower reported life satisfaction is especially prevalent when those displaced …

Title: Brains & Bilingualism: Overlapping Grammar in Aphasia Research

Category: Neuroscience

Presenter: Anya Craig

When a person who speaks more than one language has a stroke, they may experience loss of language or aphasia. Aphasia in bilinguals often causes grammatical deficits in one or both languages, yet no previous research has investigated whether the deficits across languages vary systematically or remain consistent. This study aims to identify grammatical structures uniquely preserved or impaired in bilinguals with aphasia (BWA) and understand how lesions to different brain regions correlate to grammatical deficits in those with aphasia. A cross-linguistic study was used to …

An Examination Of Cross-Language Grammatical Deficits In A Bilingual Hindi-English Aphasia Case Study, Juhi Singh, Jenna Griffin-Musick, Catherine Off, Danielle Fahey

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

In this case study, we examine the cross-language grammatical deficits of a Hindi-English bilingual speaker with chronic aphasia. When aphasia patients are bilingual, they may experience deficits in each language; unique deficits are expected, as no two grammatical structures are exactly the same. So, this case study aims to identify how the overlap of grammars affects the patient’s pattern of grammatical deficits in each language. We recorded the patient’s utterances from samples of their Cinderella story retelling. These utterances were analyzed using the Computerized Language ANalysis (CLAN) paradigm. CLAN is a program that analyzes data for specific language transcriptions. Samples …

Scripted Dialogue Task For People With Aphasia: Effects Of Verb, Object Pronoun, And Sentence Structure Differences, Ashlynn Everett, Anya Craig, Jeremy Yeaton, Catherine Off, Jenna Griffin Apr 2024

Scripted Dialogue Task For People With Aphasia: Effects Of Verb, Object Pronoun, And Sentence Structure Differences, Ashlynn Everett, Anya Craig, Jeremy Yeaton, Catherine Off, Jenna Griffin

University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)

Purpose: Simple syntactic structures are often difficult to produce correctly for people with aphasia (PWA). There has been variability in the literature about how lexical syntax (i.e., ‘parts of speech’) correlates to production of grammatical errors. We aimed to assess verb and object pronoun errors in English-speaking PWA while reducing working memory demands, using a modified replication of Rossi et. al. (2013).

Methods: We used a scripted dialogue paradigm to assess how (a) declarative (“the man wants to eat the cookies”) and imperative (“eat the cookies”) sentence structures, (b) verbs, and (c) object pronouns differentially affected accuracy of sentence completion. …

Getting Student Buy-In On Information Literacy In A Generative Ai Information World, Vincent Larkin Apr 2024

Getting Student Buy-In On Information Literacy In A Generative Ai Information World, Vincent Larkin

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Even before the emergence of ChatGPT and similar programs, it could be difficult to get students interested in tracking down information sources and evaluating the authority, context and intent of content. With the emergence of generative AI tools, many educators are finding more unattributed or AI generated content in submitted student work, and for the students who use these tools, the speed and perceived authority of these tools may blind them to the difficulty of tracking and crediting the original sources. Given the emergence of these tools, how can we get students to value and put into practice information literacy …

The Effects Of Virtual Group Study On Class Views And Performance, W. Matt Denning, Robert S. Thiebaud, Lindy M. Rossow

Educational Practices in Kinesiology

Peer-to-peer teaching improves academic performance. During the worldwide pandemic, peer-to-peer teaching was unavailable, and feelings of isolation and loneliness increased. This study investigated the impact of virtual peer-to-peer group study on student performance and class views in a virtual, undergraduate exercise physiology course. Sixty-nine college-aged adults were randomly assigned to study with a virtual group or individually for two instructional units. Students switched groups after the first unit. For virtual group study, students met virtually for at least one hour outside of class to study course content. Those assigned to the individual study did not study virtually with classmates. Unit …

The "Indian" Alexander: Reworking Nationalism, Myth, And Sikandar, John Sexton

Madison Historical Review

This article seeks to expand scholarly inquiry regarding the Alexander Romance into twentieth century India and away the Near East of Antiquity and the Europe of the Middle Ages where it is usually confined. In particular this article will discuss the Alexander Romance’s impact upon and connection with the modern invention of the cinema. Besides the usual cinematic culprit of analysis, Oliver Stone's Alexander (2004), there is another less-discussed cinematic work regarding Alexander the Great. That being Sohrab Modi's Hindustani historical epic Sikandar (1941) from British colonial India. Regarding the Macedonian conqueror and his reputation among Indian scholars such as …

Considering The “Special Considerations”: The Treatment Of Female Inmates In The People’S Republic Of China Since 1994, Niklas Berry

Madison Historical Review

The purpose of this paper is to historicize contemporary gendered legal practices in the People’s Republic of China and to demonstrate that, despite rhetoric to the contrary, paternalistic assumptions rooted in Confucianism still inform the treatment of female prisoners today. Though China underwent massive political and economic shifts after the formation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and the death of Mao Zedong in 1976, certain longstanding societal principles were preserved in modern China, including long-held paternalistic stereotypes about the physical and mental fragility of women. These precepts undergirded the PRC’s reforms of its judicial and criminal systems …

Improving Prediction Of Solar Material Properties Through Software Engineering, Ryn Y. Oliphant, Eric Jankowski Apr 2024

Improving Prediction Of Solar Material Properties Through Software Engineering, Ryn Y. Oliphant, Eric Jankowski

2024 Undergraduate Research Showcase

It is possible to inexpensively generate electrical power from the sun with panels made from carbon-based molecules. The challenge is in finding the organic molecules that are both easy to make and efficient at catching light and converting it into power. It is therefore important to understand how charges move through these molecular systems, and we use kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate these processes. Because the scientific software for performing kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of charge transport in organic materials is relatively new, there are open challenges with improving software performance, correctness, and generalizability. In this work, we focus …

Effect Of Terrain Resolution On Rockfall Dispersion, Lucas Arsenith, Nick Hudyma Apr 2024

Effect Of Terrain Resolution On Rockfall Dispersion, Lucas Arsenith, Nick Hudyma

2024 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Rockfall events are a geohazard that can pose a significant threat to infrastructure and life in mountainous areas. The trigger mechanism for these events varies but is usually due to undercutting of an existing slope, physical weathering including freeze/thaw cycles, anthropogenic factors such as excavation, environmental factors, and seismic events. Corrective measures are expensive and involve using nets, anchor bolts, or removing hazardous rock masses. Historically, two-dimensional modeling techniques have been used for sites where rockfall is a risk but these are limited in their functionality and accuracy. Three-dimensional modeling techniques are currently evolving and being used to accurately predict …

Diagnostic Disclosure Using Script-Driven Imagery In Borderline Personality Disorder, Michelle Rodriguez Apr 2024

Diagnostic Disclosure Using Script-Driven Imagery In Borderline Personality Disorder, Michelle Rodriguez

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Borderline Personality Disorder is a widely underdiagnosed psychiatric disorder associated with stigma and misinformation, both in the general public and clinical settings. Current diagnostic disclosure methods do not consider borderline-specific challenges, such as interpersonal hypersensitivity and emotion dysregulation. This has led to discrepancies in patient-provider communication approaches, perpetuating underdiagnosis and negative diagnostic experiences, impacting recovery outcomes and attitudes toward the condition. We seek to determine the efficacy of using script-driven imagery as a method of diagnostic disclosure and psychoeducation versus current practice for individuals newly diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Our randomized controlled trial will assess efficacy as the proportion …

Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Monitoring To Diagnose Acute Compartment Syndrome, Andres Yanez Apr 2024

Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Monitoring To Diagnose Acute Compartment Syndrome, Andres Yanez

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Acute compartment syndrome is a condition of increased pressure in injured extremities leading to decreased oxygen delivery and tissue death in the limb. This condition requires prompt diagnosis to avoid complications such as muscle death and amputation. The current diagnostic standards rely on clinical findings, which are subjective, or compartment pressure measurements, which are painful, invasive, and prone to error. Near-infrared spectroscopy has shown promise as a direct, objective, and non-invasive alternative in identifying compartment syndrome. Tibia fractures are the most common predisposing injury to compartment syndrome. We propose a randomized controlled trial evaluating near-infrared spectroscopy to test for compartment …
