Integrative And Holistic Approaches To Treating Ptsd: Two Theoretical Models To Guide Best Practice, Audrey G. Mcguinness
Integrative And Holistic Approaches To Treating Ptsd: Two Theoretical Models To Guide Best Practice, Audrey G. Mcguinness
Psychology Honors Projects
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating disorder that deserves quality psychotherapeutic treatment. As research on PTSD has progressed, it has become increasingly clear that the disorder is rooted in both neurological and psychological abnormalities. However, many currently available gold-standard psychotherapies target symptoms which arise from only one of these dysfunctional origins, leaving symptom profiles inadequately addressed and contributing to issues with attrition and residual symptoms. Integrative therapies, while still in the early stages of gaining empirical support, seem promising in terms of their ability to offer more complete symptom resolution than cognitive or somatic therapies alone. Another crucial aspect …
Final Scholarly Project: Optimal Perioperative Analgesic Management Guidelines For Elective Hip Arthroplasty In Adults, Makyah Dittoe
Final Scholarly Project: Optimal Perioperative Analgesic Management Guidelines For Elective Hip Arthroplasty In Adults, Makyah Dittoe
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Hip arthroplasty, a frequently performed orthopedic surgery, is gaining popularity. However, postoperative pain, opioid utilization, nausea, and vomiting are common side effects associated with this procedure. Perioperative analgesic management for hip arthroplasty varies among providers, leading to possible inadequate pain management. The goal of this scholarly project is to provide an optimal perioperative analgesic guideline to decrease postoperative pain, opioid consumption, nausea, and vomiting in adults undergoing elective hip arthroplasty utilizing evidence-based practice. The evidence suggests that a multimodal analgesic approach incorporating multiple drug classes and types of anesthesia is most effective in reducing adverse postoperative outcomes. Using the Johns …
Composing A Cadenza For Mozart's Violin Concerto In A Major, Gracie Hayes
Composing A Cadenza For Mozart's Violin Concerto In A Major, Gracie Hayes
Honors Projects
Historically, soloists from the Western art music tradition were expected to improvise a virtuosic passage during their performance of a concerto—that is, an extensive orchestral work featuring an instrumental soloist. These improvised passages, called cadenzas, were performed unaccompanied by the soloist during a prominent cadence and were derived from the ornamentation that occurred naturally during cadences in vocal arias. Contemporary composers write out these virtuosic passages for performers, who are rarely expected to improvise during a performance, with the exception of jazz musicians. When performing works dating from before the Romantic period, musicians are left with a dilemma. Should they …
A Cryptid For Catholics And Communists: The Asuang As An Apparatus For Socio-Political Control In The History Of The Philippines, Alexandra Eckhart
A Cryptid For Catholics And Communists: The Asuang As An Apparatus For Socio-Political Control In The History Of The Philippines, Alexandra Eckhart
Honors Projects
This essay explores the utilization of folklore beliefs in psychological warfare through a comparative analysis of General Edward Geary Lansdale's tactics during the Hukbalahap insurgency at the beginning of the Cold War and the historical exploitation of the asuang myth by Spanish Catholic missionaries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While both instances involved leveraging local superstitions to influence behavior, their motivations and approaches diverged significantly. Unlike the missionaries, Lansdale's actions stemmed from a strategic imperative to combat communism rather than a sense of racial superiority or religious domination. Drawing parallels between Lansdale's methods and centuries-old patterns of oppression, this …
Home-Based Virtual Culinary Nutrition Education Sessions For Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients: Quantitative Experimental Pilot Study, Ciara N. Reistad, Mauricio Lobo
Home-Based Virtual Culinary Nutrition Education Sessions For Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Patients: Quantitative Experimental Pilot Study, Ciara N. Reistad, Mauricio Lobo
Department of Nutrition Student Projects
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) impairs voluntary muscular activity and often results in malnutrition. The need for specialized dietary therapy for ALS-related illnesses is highlighted by recent research, but it also draws attention to the lack of targeted care and ongoing nutritional status monitoring. Technological developments like telehealth and chatbots hold potential for ALS patients’ nutritional monitoring. The pilot study examined the feasibility and impact of home-based virtual culinary nutrition education sessions on nutritional knowledge, dietary intake of energy (CHO), protein (PRO) and FAT, body mass index (BMI), and functional status assessed by ALSFRS-R scores in patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis …

A Comparison Of The Prevalence Of Salmonella, Specifically S. Enteritidis, In Captive Born Versus Wild Caught Reptiles, Jessica Thomas, Carrie M. Doyle
Undergraduate Theses
Salmonella contamination and transmission is a concern in public health in the United States and around the world. It is usually transmitted to humans through contaminated poultry products, but it has also been known to be transmitted through contact with reptiles. Because reptiles are becoming more popular as pets and are known carriers for Salmonella, studies have been done to test how prevalent Salmonella is in reptiles. This study focused on testing the feces of twenty-two reptiles for Salmonella, in general, and a specific serotype of Salmonella, S. Enteritidis. This study also compared the positivity rate of reptiles born …

Neural And Computational Mechanisms Of Effort Under The Pressure Of A Deadline, Andrea Pisauro, Daniele Pollicino, Lucy Fisher, Matthew A.J. Apps
School of Psychology
Deadlines fundamentally shape the motivation for effort. Research examining effort-based choices findshigh effort is an avoided cost. However, this work overlooks the fact that effort can be valuable when itmakes progress on long-term goals before deadlines. We test a new framework where motivationdepends on deadline pressure (work remaining / time remaining). Across three studies we usecomputational modelling on novel tasks examining effort-based decisions when effort makes progresson goals with deadlines. In support of hypotheses, deadline pressure significantly impacts decisionmaking, shifting people from avoiding effort, to seeking and valuing it. Using ultra-high-field fMRI, weshow that functionally connected putamen and midcingulate cortex …

Objectives: Sepsis is one of the most common, costly, and misdiagnosed conditions in U.S. emergency departments (EDs). ED providers often treat on nonspecific signs, subjective suspicion, or presumption of infection, resulting in over- and undertreatment. An increased understanding of host response has opened a new direction for sepsis diagnostics. The IntelliSep test is a U.S. Food and Drug Administration–cleared cellular host response diagnostic that could help distinguish sepsis in ED settings. Our objective was to evaluate the potential of the cellular host response test to expedite appropriate care for patients who present with signs of infection. Methods: We performed a …
An Evaluation Of The Book Of Hosea And Its Impact For Our Lives Today, Nathan Fulton
An Evaluation Of The Book Of Hosea And Its Impact For Our Lives Today, Nathan Fulton
Honors Projects
The book of Hosea provides a rich story of the life of the prophet Hosea and the constant woes of the nation of Israel. Through analysis of commentaries from past theologians and modern psychological studies, the contents of Hosea will be reinforced as viable literature to learn from. Despite belief in the historical legitimacy of the book, through research, we find humanity’s deepest desire is to be fully loved and fully known. Analysis of attachment theory and Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs show us that the story of Hosea demonstrates our insecurities and the proper response to them.

Evidence-Based Practice Recommendations For The Use Of A Cardiac Optimization Algorithm In Patients Undergoing A Whipple Procedure, Jarrod Genther
Evidence-Based Practice Recommendations For The Use Of A Cardiac Optimization Algorithm In Patients Undergoing A Whipple Procedure, Jarrod Genther
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
A fundamental responsibility of a certified registered nurse anesthetist includes intraoperative fluid and hemodynamic management. While Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols advocate goal-directed fluid therapy, the methodology remains controversial. An algorithmic approach systematically optimizes cardiac function and fluid volume status based on stroke volume variation, cardiac index, and mean arterial pressure. This project aims to evaluate the effects of placing intraoperative guidelines for patients undergoing a Whipple procedure when using a cardiac optimization algorithm to guide fluid and vasopressor management. The outcomes evaluated included the amount of fluids delivered intraoperatively, vasoactive medication administration, urine output, amount of blood transfusions, cardiac …
Scalable Relational Analysis Via Relational Bound Propagation, Clay Stevens, Hamid Bagheri
Scalable Relational Analysis Via Relational Bound Propagation, Clay Stevens, Hamid Bagheri
School of Computing: Faculty Publications
Bounded formal analysis techniques (such as bounded model checking) are incredibly powerful tools for today’s software engineers. However, such techniques often suffer from scalability challenges when applied to large-scale, real-world systems. It can be very difficult to ensure the bounds are set properly, which can have a profound impact on the performance and scalability of any bounded formal analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel approach—relational bound propagation—which leverages the semantics of the underlying relational logic formula encoded by the specification to automatically tighten the bounds for any relational specification. Our approach applies two sets of semantic rules to …

Depletion Of Protein Phosphatase 1 Results In Persistent Activation Of The Integrated Stress Response And Age-Associated Exacerbation Of Pulmonary Veno-Occlusive Disease, Amit Prabhakar, Meetu Wadhwa, Prajakta Ghatpande, Rahul Kumar, Brian B. Graham, Giorgio Lagna, Akiko Hata
Biology
Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is a form of pulmonary hypertension that affects individuals across the age spectrum. PVOD is characterized by the obstruction of small pulmonary vessels, causing increased pulmonary artery (PA) pressure and leading to right ventricular heart (RV) failure. Previous research showed that the administration of Mitomycin-C (MMC) in rats mediates PVOD through the activation of the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 (eIF2) kinase PKR and the integrated stress response (ISR), resulting in the impairment of vascular endothelial junctional structure and barrier function. In this study, we reveal that older rats experience more severe pulmonary vascular remodeling and RV …

Autoethnographies Exploring The Cultural Spirit Murdering And Nurturing Of Three Minority Educators In K-12, Sara Z. Beg, Maritza Caldera, Denise Ross
Dissertations
This autoethnography sought to understand how our experiences during our K-12 journey as three minority students shaped our identities as students and our teaching style today. An autoethnography allowed us to analyze our experiences through the lens of Cultural Spirit Nurturing and Cultural Spirit Murdering. Cultural Spirit Nurturing, as we defined it, is the acceptance, respect, and inclusion of different cultures, ethnicities, nationalities, races, languages, and religions in society. We dissected our lived moments as Pakistani Muslim American, African American, and Mexican American students turned educators, defined them as Cultural Spirit Nurturing or Murdering, and bridged them with the concepts …

This project is on enhancing pain management in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) clients via the intravenous (IV) administration of acetaminophen (Ofirmev) by multimodal regimen. The patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time (PICOT) question shaping this initiative looks at frequency and intensity of patients’ pain scores as well as practical outcome measures such as healing and physical therapy during the recovery period ending with discharge. After a thorough literature synopsis, it is evident that multimodal pain management strategies including IV acetaminophen provide a better prospectus in comparison to the ones that solely employ opioids. Research repeatedly demonstrates the use of IV …
Reducing Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (Clabsi) With Chlorhexidine-Impregnated Dressings, Sara Garcia
Reducing Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections (Clabsi) With Chlorhexidine-Impregnated Dressings, Sara Garcia
MSN Capstone Projects
Mitigating and eradicating central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) is a vital patient safety priority. These healthcare-associated infections lead to patient fatalities and incur costly, preventable expenses. Therefore, it is imperative to assess central venous catheter (CVC) maintenance protocols to mitigate the likelihood of infection. Federal guidelines advocate using chlorhexidine (CHG) dressings to lower this risk (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). A comprehensive central line maintenance bundle includes incorporating a CHG dressing as a critical measure in reducing the risk of CLABSI (Buetti et al., 2022). Consequently, the escalating infection rates underscore the necessity for implementing CHG dressings (Buetti …

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can be used to non-invasively augment cognitive training. However, the benefits of tDCS may be due in part to placebo effects, which have not been well-characterized. The purpose of this study was to determine whether tDCS can have a measurable placebo effect on cognitive training and to identify potential sources of this effect. Eighty-three right-handed adults were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control (no exposure to tDCS), sham tDCS, or active tDCS. The sham and active tDCS groups were double-blinded. Each group performed 20 min of an adapted Corsi Block Tapping Task (CBTT), …
Self-Weighted Estimation For Local Unit Root Regression With Applications, Zhishui Hu, Nan Liu, Peter C. B. Phillips, Qiying Wang
Self-Weighted Estimation For Local Unit Root Regression With Applications, Zhishui Hu, Nan Liu, Peter C. B. Phillips, Qiying Wang
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
A new self-weighted least squares (LS) estimation theory is developed for local unit root (LUR) autoregression with heteroskedasticity. The proposed estimator has a mixed Gaussian limit distribution and the corresponding studentized statistic converges to a standard normal distribution free of the unknown localizing coefficient which is not consistently estimable. The estimator is super consistent with a convergence rate slightly below the OP (n) rate of LS estimation. The asymptotic theory relies on a new framework of convergence to the local time of a Gaussian process, allowing for the sample moments generated from martingales and many other integrated dependent sequences. A …

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers
Clofazimine and Arbidol have both been reported to be effective in vitro SARS-CoV-2 fusion inhibitors. Both are promising drugs that have been repurposed for the treatment of COVID-19 and have been used in several previous and ongoing clinical trials. Small-molecule bindings to expressed constructs of the trimeric S2 segment of Spike and the full-length SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein were measured using a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) binding assay. We demonstrate that Clofazimine, Toremifene, Arbidol and its derivatives bind to the S2 segment of the Spike protein. Clofazimine provided the most reliable and highest-quality SPR data for binding with S2 over the …

The curative treatment of multiple solid tumors, including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), utilizes radiation. The outcomes for HPV/p16-negative HNSCC are significantly worse than HPV/p16-positive tumors, with increased radiation resistance leading to worse locoregional recurrence (LRR) and ultimately death. This study analyzed the relationship between immune function and outcomes following radiation in HPV/p16-negative tumors to identify mechanisms of radiation resistance and prognostic immune biomarkers. A discovery cohort of 94 patients with HNSCC treated uniformly with surgery and adjuvant radiation and a validation cohort of 97 similarly treated patients were utilized. Tumor immune infiltrates were derived from RNAseq gene …

The Spirit-Murdering Of Black Students From White Educators, Brian C. Guilfoyle, Casetta D. Brown, Sarah J. Guilfoyle, Courtney D. Jude
Dissertations
In this collection of autoethnographies, four researchers explored our deeply personal experiences and encounters with racialized oppression in the form of spirit-murder. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Critical Whiteness Studies, this dissertation explores how two white educators have committed spirit-murder against Black students and how two Black educators have both experienced spirit-murder as students and have spirit-murdered their Black and Brown students as classroom teachers. We wanted to elevate our voices using counter-stories as a tenet of CRT and examples of our teaching practices. We aimed to elicit relatable suggestions to combat spirit-murdering from white educators toward Black students …

Dispossession Of Ancestral Land: Effect Of Displacement On Indigenous Peoples' Life Satifaction, Kaitlyn Bird, Hailey Shangin, Alana Smutz, Julisa Lopez, Adam Farero, Stephanie Fryberg
University of Montana Conference on Undergraduate Research (UMCUR)
North America's history of forced displacement and relocation of Indigenous tribes continues to affect contemporary Indigenous peoples (Wolfe, 2006). As climate change, socioeconomic disparities, and industry encroachment shape displacement, Indigenous people continue to be negatively impacted (Covey, 2021). The current work explores how displacement impacts life satisfaction for Indigenous Peoples, and whether cultural embeddedness modifies this relationship. Using the Indigenous Climate Justice survey (N=282), regression analysis illustrates that those who have not been displaced generally report higher life satisfaction than those who have been displaced (β=-0.255, SE= 0.108 p= 0.019). Lower reported life satisfaction is especially prevalent when those displaced …
