Diagnostic Disclosure Using Script-Driven Imagery In Borderline Personality Disorder, Michelle Rodriguez
Diagnostic Disclosure Using Script-Driven Imagery In Borderline Personality Disorder, Michelle Rodriguez
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Borderline Personality Disorder is a widely underdiagnosed psychiatric disorder associated with stigma and misinformation, both in the general public and clinical settings. Current diagnostic disclosure methods do not consider borderline-specific challenges, such as interpersonal hypersensitivity and emotion dysregulation. This has led to discrepancies in patient-provider communication approaches, perpetuating underdiagnosis and negative diagnostic experiences, impacting recovery outcomes and attitudes toward the condition. We seek to determine the efficacy of using script-driven imagery as a method of diagnostic disclosure and psychoeducation versus current practice for individuals newly diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Our randomized controlled trial will assess efficacy as the proportion …
Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Monitoring To Diagnose Acute Compartment Syndrome, Andres Yanez
Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Monitoring To Diagnose Acute Compartment Syndrome, Andres Yanez
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Acute compartment syndrome is a condition of increased pressure in injured extremities leading to decreased oxygen delivery and tissue death in the limb. This condition requires prompt diagnosis to avoid complications such as muscle death and amputation. The current diagnostic standards rely on clinical findings, which are subjective, or compartment pressure measurements, which are painful, invasive, and prone to error. Near-infrared spectroscopy has shown promise as a direct, objective, and non-invasive alternative in identifying compartment syndrome. Tibia fractures are the most common predisposing injury to compartment syndrome. We propose a randomized controlled trial evaluating near-infrared spectroscopy to test for compartment …
Targeted Temperature Management Device Initiation Time And Neurologic Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest, Alexandra Liberti
Targeted Temperature Management Device Initiation Time And Neurologic Outcomes After Cardiac Arrest, Alexandra Liberti
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Targeted temperature management has been shown to improve neurologic status after cardiac arrest; however, recommendations for the timing of its initiation are unclear. Clinical trials have not directly studied time to targeted temperature management initiation, causing wide variability in protocol implementation. We propose a randomized, controlled, multi-center clinical trial to study the effect of early initiation of targeted temperature management in patients who achieve return of spontaneous circulation after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Data will be compared among patients who received initiation of targeted temperature management within 3 hours to those in whom initiation occurred after 3 hours. The primary outcome …

Rebuilding Lives: Occupational Therapy's Crucial Role In Community Reintegration To Reduce Recidivism Rates, Julie Burgoon, Kari Joyce
Rebuilding Lives: Occupational Therapy's Crucial Role In Community Reintegration To Reduce Recidivism Rates, Julie Burgoon, Kari Joyce
MOT Student Capstones
The integration of occupational therapy (OT) in the criminal justice system provides a promising and unique approach for addressing community reintegration, thereby contributing to the reduction of recidivism rates in the United States. OT impacts recidivism rates by addressing three main areas; occupational deprivation, mental health, and community reintegration. OT addresses the negative consequences of incarceration by promoting engagement in meaningful activities, establishing routine, and assisting individuals in achieving a variety of skills necessary for successful reintegration. OTs can provide valuable interventions that support mental and occupational engagement to decrease recidivism rates. OT led community reintegration program not only improves …

California V. Texas: Avoiding An Antidemocratic Outcome, Jon Lucas
California V. Texas: Avoiding An Antidemocratic Outcome, Jon Lucas
Journal of Law and Health
The Affordable Care Act (“ACA”) contains a section titled “Requirement to Maintain Essential Minimum Coverage.” Colloquially known as the Individual Mandate, this section of the Act initially established a monetary penalty for anyone who did not maintain health insurance in a given tax year. But with the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, the monetary penalty was reset to zero, inducing opponents of the ACA to mount a legal challenge over the Individual Mandate’s constitutionality. As the third major legal challenge to the ACA, California v. Texas saw the Supreme Court punt on the merits and instead decide …

A Multi-Site Qualitative Analysis Of The Juvenile Justice And Child Welfare Systems: Implications For Dual System Youth, Lauren Morgan
A Multi-Site Qualitative Analysis Of The Juvenile Justice And Child Welfare Systems: Implications For Dual System Youth, Lauren Morgan
Dissertations
Researchers have been studying juveniles who experience both child maltreatment and delinquency for decades. These studies document the prevalence, outcomes, and demographics of youth who navigate child welfare and juvenile justice systems, also known as dual system youth. However, there is a lack of investigation into the complex processes occurring at the intersection of these two systems. This dissertation aims to fill that gap by building on previous research, organizational theory, and the growing area of punishment literature in criminal justice. The goal is to better understand how juvenile justice and child welfare systems organizationally manage dual system youth. Specifically, …

Discrimination In Incarceration: Incarcerated People Litigate To Witness The Solar Eclipse In New York, Mitchell Kevett
Discrimination In Incarceration: Incarcerated People Litigate To Witness The Solar Eclipse In New York, Mitchell Kevett
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights and Social Justice (ERSJ) Blog
The rights of incarcerated people have been historically overlooked and ignored in the United States, and this must change. It is critical for incarcerated people to be able to access and protect their rights because they are often exploited for free labor and receive little resources with which they can maintain their rights, which is part of what led the United Nations to issue a report finding that the United States has the “worst version of a racist criminal legal system.” Lawsuits and lobbying are two major means of expanding and protecting the rights of incarcerated people. In New York, …

Rainbows Around The Throne: Theological Aesthetics In Evangelism To Same-Sex Attracted Men, Austin Tucker Kemp
Rainbows Around The Throne: Theological Aesthetics In Evangelism To Same-Sex Attracted Men, Austin Tucker Kemp
Senior Honors Theses
Cultural barriers and worldview differences between American evangelicalism and the LGBTQ+ movement have historically hindered evangelism to same-sex attracted men. Although recent Christian theologians have offered wisdom for including same-sex attracted believers in the church and for combating prevailing secular worldviews, evangelistic strategies to reach gay unbelievers remain underdeveloped. This thesis identifies five desires common within the population of same-sex attracted men (beauty, friendship, romance, sexuality, and masculinity) and proposes a method of evangelism which targets these desires using theological aesthetics to communicate the beauty of the gospel creatively and compellingly. A focus on aesthetic apologetics, aesthetic community, and aesthetic …
A Further Performance Comparison Of Operations In The File System And In Embedded Key-Value Databases, Nicholas Cunningham
A Further Performance Comparison Of Operations In The File System And In Embedded Key-Value Databases, Nicholas Cunningham
MS in Computer Science Project Reports
A routine scenario when developing PC applications is storing data in small files or records and then retrieving and manipulating that data with a distinctive identifier (ID). In these scenarios, the developer can save the records using the ID as the filename or use an embedded on-disk key-value database. However, many file systems can have performance issues when handling many small files. As a result, developers would rather avoid depending on an embedded database if it offers little benefit or has a detrimental effect on performance for their use case. Our contribution is to compare several key-value databases—SQlite3, LevelDB, RocksDB, …
"They Just Needed To Be Given The Opportunity": Judicial Perspectives Of Drug/Dui Courts In South Dakota, Ryleigh A. Christopherson
"They Just Needed To Be Given The Opportunity": Judicial Perspectives Of Drug/Dui Courts In South Dakota, Ryleigh A. Christopherson
Honors Thesis
Drug/DUI courts have existed in the state of South Dakota since 2007 when the state became the last to implement a drug/DUI court program. Currently, South Dakota has 17 problem-solving courts which include drug, DUI, mental health, and veterans courts. The drug/DUI court model works to circumvent participants out of the criminal justice system by targeting the root cause of their criminal behavior. The role of the judge in this model is essential. Previous research has found that how participants view the quality of their interactions with the presiding judge is one of the most influential factors for their success …
Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth
Sexual Health Education Scope And Sequence, Sara Wadsworth
Honors Projects
Based on a significant amount of prior research, comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) has been identified to be the most effective method of teaching sexual health education (SHAPE America, 2021; World Health Organization, 2023). Comprehensive sexual health education improves healthy behaviors and outcomes, provides useful information, and is positively perceived by students (Gardner, 2015; Kirby, 2002; Robinson et al., 2022). However, the United States’ current sexual health education has not implemented this ideal method, which is shown through state laws, students’ experiences, underdeveloped skills and flawed understanding of concepts, and – most importantly – a lack of resources for teachers (Foley, …
Small Moments: Anthropological Poetry, Lee Davis
Small Moments: Anthropological Poetry, Lee Davis
Undergraduate Theses
Have you ever perhaps overheard a conversation and thought it reminded you of your own life, or someone you knew? You most likely moved on, and you most likely completely forgot about who you overheard. This collection of poetry was written to urge thought on these secret moments of connection which most people experience every day. Every poem in the collection was written from something I overheard in public, as though I were reading prompts. The pieces are fictional in the sense that I really know so little of the full context, but real in the sense that when I …

The Impact Of Using Standard Quality Measures Such As Iso 9001:2015 On Emerging Software Companies Created With Agile Methodologies., Elisa Orillac
Harrisburg University Dissertations and Theses
This qualitative research aimed to analyze the impact of applying quality measure standards, specifically ISO 9001:2015, in emerging software companies that have decided to manage their projects through Agile methodologies. While Agile methodologies are well known for their continuous delivery of software, the quality that results from these projects is not always guaranteed. This research aimed to evaluate what benefits in terms of cost, timely delivery of working software, and production have companies who already applied QMS had. Or, if applying the QMS had a negative result, why was this the case? The hypothesis for the research was that those …
Mindful Parenting And Harsh Parenting: The Indirect Role Of Maternal Stress, Heidi M. Sanders
Mindful Parenting And Harsh Parenting: The Indirect Role Of Maternal Stress, Heidi M. Sanders
Individual, Family, and Community Education ETDs
This study explored associations between maternal mindful parenting (i.e., mindful discipline, being in the moment with the child), maternal parental stress, and harsh parenting (i.e., physical and psychological harsh parenting) in early childhood. A sample of 172 mothers of young children in New Mexico completed questionnaires assessing perceived parental stress, use of harsh parenting, and mindful parenting. Results of the path model analysis demonstrated that being mindful in the moment with the child was directly, negatively associated with physical harsh parenting and also negatively associated with perceived stress. Mindful discipline was directly, negatively associated with both psychological aggression and perceived …
Psychological Influences On Reaction When Faced With Failure And Difficult Experiences, Marcus Cunha
Psychological Influences On Reaction When Faced With Failure And Difficult Experiences, Marcus Cunha
Honors Theses
The current study investigated the impact of psychological traits on emotional reactions in the face of challenges. The study employed tasks designed to induce negative psychological states, such as a Learned Helplessness (LH) task (Hooper & McHugh, 2013) and the difficult Compound Remote Associate (CRA) task (Bowden & Jung-Beeman, 2003). A correlational study was conducted using a within-subjects design. All participants were given initially the same questionnaires measuring the following predictor variables: Grit, Need for Cognition (NFC), Psychological Flexibility (PF), Trait Cognitive Fusion (CF), and Emotional Stability. Participants then engaged in the LH and CRA tasks followed by completing outcome …
Effects Of Postural Position, Eeg Asymmetry, And Temperamental Style On Cognitive Task Performance, Taylor Cops, Christy D. Wolfe
Effects Of Postural Position, Eeg Asymmetry, And Temperamental Style On Cognitive Task Performance, Taylor Cops, Christy D. Wolfe
Undergraduate Theses
The literature shows hemispheric asymmetry in individuals corresponding with temperamental style. Those with greater right-frontal activation tend towards withdrawal/inhibition and those with greater left-frontal activation tend towards approach/activation (e.g., Davidson, 1992). Other literature suggests that greater right-parietotemporal activation is associated with increased arousal (Heller, 1993; Wolfe & Bell, 2014). Temperamental style has been linked with cognitive performance with approach-oriented temperaments being associated with both higher and lower performance depending on the task requirements (Khan et al., 2024; Wolfe & Bell, 2007). Literature further suggests that postural position (e.g., sitting, standing, lying down) may influence feelings of approach/withdrawal and cognitive processing. …

Despertando Del Sueño Americano: U.S. Policies Influencing Cartel Profitability From Undocumented Border Crossing, Gisela Martinez Acosta
Undergraduate Theses
Due to U.S. border policies limiting safe and lawful passage, cartels have developed an industry in the U.S.-Mexico border that supplies crossing services to migrants, utilizing coercive means to regulate the market and profiting from migrant’s desperation to enter the country. This study combines economic and ethnographic research to describe the human smuggling industry and the impact it has in the migrant journey. Scarcity, inelastic demand, black markets, and monopolies are economic concepts used to understand the operations of these services. Observational research and interviews conducted in the Sonoran Desert are also included to present this topic humanely. Background on …
Effects Of Uv Filter Pollutants On The Growth Of Cucurbits And Possible Implications For Humans, Leia Staples
Effects Of Uv Filter Pollutants On The Growth Of Cucurbits And Possible Implications For Humans, Leia Staples
Undergraduate Theses
One main area of concern is the use of personal care products and pharmaceuticals in society and their long-term persistence when released into the environment (Chaturvedi et al. 2021). Cucurbits, however, are well-known for taking up pollutants (Namiki et al. 2013, Christou et al. 2019, Komives et al. 2009), so it essential to ensure that these pollutants do not negatively affect growth or productivity of plants. These plants are particularly useful in society because they have many health benefits and are consumed regularly by humans. While much research has been done on how much of the pollutant travels throughout the …

"And No Birds Sing": The Environmental Ethics Of Carson, Keats, Sagan, And Oliver, Savannah Bloom
Undergraduate Theses
This project aims to create resonances and synchronicities between the works of science writers Rachel Carson and Carl Sagan and poets John Keats and Mary Oliver. It puts their environmental ethics in conversation with one another with a focus on shared literary practices and ecocritical and ecocentric sensibilities. Is the work of poetry, particularly poetry participating in the Romantic tradition, compatible with science writing? The ultimate goal is to demonstrate the symbiosis between science and literature and the necessity of bridging scientific and poetic discourse in regard to addressing climate and the environment. Each chapter pairs a science writer with …
Schism, Synodality, And Communion In The Contemporary American Catholic Church, Nicola Peck
Schism, Synodality, And Communion In The Contemporary American Catholic Church, Nicola Peck
Undergraduate Theses
Divisions in the American Catholic Church have resulted in widespread dissent from Catholic moral teaching. In response to this dissent, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has used the language of communion to bar dissenting Catholics from the Eucharist, which is to push them to the margins of the Church. In contrast, Pope Francis has used the language of communion to welcome dissenting Catholics to the table through the Synod on Synodality. This thesis explores the theological implications of these different approaches to communion. It argues that the people of the Church must embrace an understanding of communion …
