Phosphorus Soprtion Experiments: Impacts On Water Column Phosphate Concentrations In Utah Lake, Rebecca Layne Butters
Phosphorus Soprtion Experiments: Impacts On Water Column Phosphate Concentrations In Utah Lake, Rebecca Layne Butters
Theses and Dissertations
Utah Lake, located in north-central Utah, USA, is a freshwater lake with a large surface area, shallow depth, and phosphorus-rich sediment with significant water-sediment interaction. These factors cause unique phosphorus behavior relative to other lake ecosystems, governed by sediment-water interactions. We hypothesize that benthic sediments and suspended solids act, by sorption processes, to maintain water column P concentrations that are largely insensitive to P inflows. We conducted a Phosphorus Addition Experiment to characterize sorbed P fluxes in the lake. Our experimental procedure included bench-scale laboratory experiments testing Utah Lake water and sediment with dilute and augmented P levels, as well …

Transferable User-Friendly Machine Learning For Normal Boiling Point Prediction, Frank Tafadzwa Mtetwa
Theses and Dissertations
The estimation of thermophysical properties of chemical compounds holds considerable importance across a multitude of fields, ranging from material science to process design. Among these properties, the normal boiling point (NBP) stands out as a pivotal parameter in scientific and engineering contexts, as it elucidates the state of a substance under standard conditions commonly encountered in nature. Additionally, NBP is extensively documented in various reference materials and databases. Given its paramount importance and widespread availability, prediction methodologies for other properties such as critical temperature, liquid density, vapor pressure, surface tension, liquid viscosity, liquid thermal conductivity, and flash point often rely …

eDNA, or environmental DNA, is found free-existing in any environment. It can be extracted from its environment and used to identify organisms that were recently in the area. In recent years, eDNA metabarcoding has been used to help examine communities for overall species presence and biodiversity. This capstone sought to create a mock proposal for an eDNA survey of Gulf of Mexico elasmobranch and Selachii species due to their overall decline in numbers. Additionally, general and discriminatory PCR primers were created in-silico and assessed for initial quality. This capstone documents the feasibility of an eDNA study, constructing the necessary primers, …
The Unconstitutionality Of Underfunded Public Defender Systems, Braden Daniels
The Unconstitutionality Of Underfunded Public Defender Systems, Braden Daniels
Senior Honors Theses
When a defendant is ineffectively represented by a public defender due to an underfunded public defender system, a defendant whose public defender provides him only cursory representation is entitled to a new trial only if blatantly innocent. The U.S. Supreme Court should follow its precedent and declare systemically underfunded public defender systems unconstitutional, with cases meriting reversal when the underfunding is to blame for unreasonable attorney errors, regardless of prejudice. This stems logically from the Court’s holdings in Gideon v. Wainwright, Strickland v. Washington, and United States v. Cronic. Many have argued for the reversal or modification …

Spontaneous cancers in companion dogs are robust models of human disease. Tracking tumor-specific immune responses in these models requires reagents to perform species-specific single cell T cell receptor sequencing (scTCRseq). scTCRseq and integration with scRNA data have not been demonstrated on companion dogs with cancer. Here, five healthy dogs, two dogs with T cell lymphoma and four dogs with melanoma are selected to demonstrate applicability of scTCRseq in a cancer immunotherapy setting. Single-cell suspensions of PBMCs or lymph node aspirates are profiled using scRNA and dog-specific scTCRseq primers. In total, 77,809 V(D)J-expressing cells are detected, with an average of 3498 …

The functions of biomolecular condensates are thought to be influenced by their material properties, and these will be determined by the internal organization of molecules within condensates. However, structural characterizations of condensates are challenging, and rarely reported. Here, we deploy a combination of small angle neutron scattering, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching, and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to provide structural descriptions of model condensates that are formed by macromolecules from nucleolar granular components (GCs). We show that these minimal facsimiles of GCs form condensates that are network fluids featuring spatial inhomogeneities across different length scales that reflect the contributions of distinct …
“Wondered At This Change”: Queer Potential And Telling Silence In The Relationship Of Legolas And Gimli, Hannah Mendro
“Wondered At This Change”: Queer Potential And Telling Silence In The Relationship Of Legolas And Gimli, Hannah Mendro
Journal of Tolkien Research
Queer scholarship on The Lord of the Rings has frequently focused on J. R. R. Tolkien’s depiction of deep, intense male friendships. The tenderness of these relationships and Tolkien’s treatment of homosocial bonds - particularly in comparison to his depiction of heterosexual relationships - raises a question of deeper intimacy and queer potential that cannot be ignored. But in contrast to the relationship between Frodo and Sam, which is frequently explored in scholarly work (even if raised only to dismiss the possibility of queerness), the potential for a queer reading of Legolas and Gimli shows up as a glaring gap …

Basic Needs Insecurity In U.S. Colleges: Human Rights Unfulfilled, Sarita Cargas, Tammy Thomas
International Journal of Human Rights Education
There have now been fifteen years of research on the basic needs of college students in the U.S. The studies have primarily focused on assessing the prevalence of food and housing insecurity. Determining who is responsible and finding solutions have been less emphasized. The scholarship has also not framed the problems of students’ basic needs insecurity (BNI) as human rights violations. This article argues that applying a human rights lens to the issue reveals that the rights to education, food, and shelter are not being realized, but further, higher education institutions bear considerable responsibility for addressing BNI. Human rights education …
