Essays In Accounting And Financial Institutions, Hanmeng Wang
Essays In Accounting And Financial Institutions, Hanmeng Wang
Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Financial institutions, e.g., mutual funds and banks, are important entities in the capital markets. They make decisions based on accounting information. Further, their activities influence information production on the firm side, because interests are aligned between institutional investors and firms either through contracting or through market price pressure. Within this context, my dissertation focuses on the interactions between financial institutions and firms. In Chapter 1, I study how institutional investors’ myopia affects firms’ voluntary disclosures. This research question is motivated by the concurrent debate in accounting theory about whether myopia leads to more or less voluntary disclosures. I explore the …

The Geodynamic Significance Of Continental Uhp Exhumation: New Constraints From The Tso Morari Complex, Nw Himalaya, Anna K. Bidgood, Andrew J. Parsons, Nick M.W. Roberts, Dave Waters, Simon Tapster, Phillip Gopon
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The burial and exhumation of continental crust to and from ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) is an important orogenic process, often interpreted with respect to the onset and/or subduction dynamics of continent-continent collision. Here, we investigate the timing and significance of UHP metamorphism and exhumation of the Tso Morari complex, North-West Himalaya. We present new petrochronological analyses of mafic eclogites and their host-rock gneisses, combining U-Pb zircon, rutile and xenotime geochronology (high-precision CA-ID-TIMS and high-spatial resolution LA-ICP-MS), garnet element maps, and petrographic observations. Zircon from mafic eclogite have a CA-ID-TIMS age of 46.91 ± 0.07 Ma, with REE profiles indicative of growth at …
Estimating The Carbon Flux Contributions Of Three Common Myctophids In The Gulf Of Mexico, Mary S. Gad
Estimating The Carbon Flux Contributions Of Three Common Myctophids In The Gulf Of Mexico, Mary S. Gad
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Carbon flux, the transport of carbon from the epipelagic zone (0 m – 200 m) to the mesopelagic zone (200 m -1000 m), can be facilitated by migratory fauna. Myctophids, likely comprising the highest biomass of migratory mesopelagic fishes across all oceans, play an important role in carbon flux. Myctophids undergo diel vertical migration (DVM) from the mesopelagic zone to the epipelagic zone. The amount of carbon transported by myctophids, through DVM, can be estimated by modeling all the bioenergetic pathways that release carbon. This study will use an individual adult myctophid model, with a series of bioenergetics calculations, to …

School of Medicine Publications
With a new definition of high-quality primary care and the shift in nonphysician faculty’s role as core faculty members in family medicine residency programs, new attention is needed on the delineation of clinical efforts and clinical efforts disparities across disciplines (eg, psychology, marriage and family therapy, pharmacy) within departments of family medicine. Additionally, those who identify as underrepresented in medicine (URiM), specifically those who are nonphysician faculty, are dually impacted by the clinical efforts double disparity. This paper examines the current landscape of clinical efforts in academic family medicine for physician faculty and nonphysician faculty as well as discusses how …

A significant challenge in global change research is understanding how vegetation interacts with the environment to influence ecosystem gross primary productivity (GPP) through carbon assimilation. One emerging objective is to consistently predict GPP fluctuations worldwide by establishing a robust scaling relationship between GPP measured at flux towers and satellite spectral reflectance data. However, a major hurdle in achieving this goal is the discrepancy in spatial resolution between early satellite measurements and eddy flux measurements. By using a large set of growing season data covering 100 site-years in North and Central America, we explored the potential of transforming incident and reflected …

The Inclusive Music Classroom For Elementary Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Benjamin Bartow Harrison
The Inclusive Music Classroom For Elementary Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, Benjamin Bartow Harrison
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Even though considerable research has been conducted regarding the inclusion of self-contained students in regular education settings, little research has been conducted specifically on elementary, self-contained students with EBDs in music classes. Given the fact that there are increasing numbers of students with EBDs, suggestions for empirically supported techniques specific to this demographic, as well as evaluation of unique challenges with educating this population, will prove beneficial to the overall classroom environment. Considering the negative impact of emotional outbursts on mainstream students, deciding when it is appropriate to exclude self-contained students from the inclusive classroom is crucial. Identifying proper utilization …

"More Nobility Of Soul": Honor At The United States Naval Academy, 1845-1875, Samuel J. Limneos
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
An import from the old European world, the new United States and its incipient national navy inherited a fierce honor culture that valued aggressiveness, impetuousness, defiance, boldness, and courage. In 1845, the Navy brought the education of midshipmen, the service’s youngest corps of junior officers to Annapolis, where it established the United States Naval School. There, the institution’s strict discipline, organization and order inculcated the midshipmen in the expectations of an officer and gentleman and subjected them to unprecedented restraint as a matter of duty. The midshipmen reacted to this restraint and all impugnation to their vulnerable sense of honor …

The COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns were phenomena experienced by the majority of the modern world, but not everyone experienced it in the same way. Each person brings their own past, their own interests, and their own needs to the lived experience. Pre-pandemic research on art therapy suggests that creative expression could be helpful to adolescents experiencing such trauma. Theater majors are a particular set of people for whom creative expression through theater is a huge part of their life. Theater majors are also participating in a creative activity that requires social contact, and that social contact was limited or …

With the quick rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), generative AI models have greatly increased the volume and velocity of data creation. Among that data, AI-generated images have become a highly discussed topic, especially when discussing the potential dangers of these AI models. Due to these dangers, being able to distinguish AI-generated art from human-made art is becoming a necessity. Additionally, as these AI-models improve, it is becoming increasingly difficult for humans to determine whether art is AI-generated or human-made. This paper proposes the further exploration of the effectiveness of a current state of the art AI-image identification model.
