The American policing model, which evolved from slave patrols to public entities, continued as an apparatus in the marginalization and disenfranchisement of African Americans. The narrative of “defunding the police” suggests that the past’s cultural proximity renders the …

Geopolitical Actions Of The German Empire Prior To The First World War – A Modified Dime Analysis –, Gregory A. Mauck

Masters Theses

It is said that the victors write the history. That adage is demonstrably true for the history of the First World War. The German Empire, Das Deutsche Kaiserreich, has shouldered most of the blame for the war for most of the past century. Article 231 of the Treaty of Versailles declares this German guilt in no uncertain terms. But is this a fair assessment? A study of pre-war German diplomatic and military actions provides a method to partially assess the culpability of Germany for the Great War. A fair analysis of that geopolitical activity shows that the actions of the …

The Shaffer Thesis Arthur Harvey Shaffer: American Founding History And History Education, C. C. Mathis Apr 2024

The Shaffer Thesis Arthur Harvey Shaffer: American Founding History And History Education, C. C. Mathis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Historian Arthur Harvey Shaffer (1936-2002) argued that the post-Revolution historians created a New England-centric nationalist history perspective of the American founding. He further argued they established a model of nationalist American history education to instill a virtuous national character and ensure the stability of the new republic. Though current trends show an increasing number of scholars reassessing New England primacy in American colonial and revolutionary era histories, Shaffer’s historical perspective and pedagogy appears overlooked. Shaffer’s historical perspective and pedagogy can be integrated into a unique historical lens for insight into the link between American history scholarship, history education, and national …

The Effect Of Drug Legalization On Property Crime In A County In Washington State: A Causal-Comparative Study, Trent Michael Dow Apr 2024

The Effect Of Drug Legalization On Property Crime In A County In Washington State: A Causal-Comparative Study, Trent Michael Dow

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Washington state embarked on an ambitious policy of drug legalization from February of 2021 to July of 2023. Initially arising from the Washington State Supreme Court’s Blake decision and continued through new legislation later in the year, drug legalization had a significant impact on Washington State communities. The lack of criminal sanctions for drug possession eliminated deterrence, increased impairment and cognitive deficits related to drug use, and prevented the use of court-ordered rehabilitative interventions. An understanding of the impacts of drug legalization on American communities is essential and currently understudied. This study set out to assess the effect of drug …

Geochemical Processes On The Martian Surface: An Investigation Of Dust, Mineral Transformations, And Trace Elements Along Rover Traverses, Abigail Leigh Knight Apr 2024

Geochemical Processes On The Martian Surface: An Investigation Of Dust, Mineral Transformations, And Trace Elements Along Rover Traverses, Abigail Leigh Knight

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Martian surfaces processes often result in changes in mineralogy and chemical perturbations in surface materials. Trace elements can serve as geochemical indicators of past aqueous and volcanic activity, and the mineralogy of the surface can offer evidence of specific mineral transformation pathways and therefore past conditions on Mars. Constraining past surface environments is critical to assessing the potential habitability of Mars in its past. Further, the composition of the Martian surface informs the availability of bioessential elements. Acquiring data from Mars to investigate its composition requires immense resources to plan, develop, and operate missions. Utilization of Mars rover payload instruments …

Essays In Corporate Governance, Jun Mok Kim Apr 2024

Essays In Corporate Governance, Jun Mok Kim

Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of two essays that deal with institutional investors and corporate governance. In particular the first chapter studies the relationship between higher temperatures and institutions’ proxy voting. Analyzing voting decisions by U.S. mutual funds, I find that heat exposure negatively correlates with voting against management. The findings concentrate on companies or shareholder proposals where a stockholding in the firm represents a larger share of an institution’s portfolio. The heat-voting relationship is stronger when an institutional shareholder is experiencing unusually hotter temperatures. My results suggest potentially significant but hidden corporate governance implications of climate change. The second chapter studies …
