It is now common knowledge that simple lectures are not the most effective way for the average person to learn and retain knowledge. The Core of Engineers at the Warner Robins Air Logistic Center have tasked us to transform their PowerPoint presentations into interactive training games to improve comprehension, interaction and retention while saving time and logistical resources compared to giving a traditional lecture. We been tasked with creating game modules covering STINFO or what is or is not considered classified information, Records Management, and the No FEAR Act detailing whistleblower rights and protocols. Our team has developed a log …

143 Wing (Rcaf) Typhoons Over Normandy: Some Operational, Geographical And Archaeological Perspectives, David G. Passmore, David Capps-Tunwell
Canadian Military History
This article presents the first attempt to conduct a geographical analysis of every air-to-ground attack conducted by a tactical fighter-bomber wing over the period 1 May–31 August 1944 in support of Operation Overlord. Ninety-five per cent of the 606 attacks made by 143 Wing Typhoons on single or multiple targets can be resolved to a map reference or place name, and their chronology and distribution reveal new insights into the Wing’s operational history. Commemorative and heritage perspectives are also highlighted for attacks on targets in woodland settings where archaeological survey of bomb craters can be linked to specific raids.
The Vernon Military Camp And The Imperial Training Archipelago, 1939-45, Megan Hamilton
The Vernon Military Camp And The Imperial Training Archipelago, 1939-45, Megan Hamilton
Canadian Military History
The Vernon Military Camp was one of the many interwoven institutions that fed trained soldiers into the vast armies of the British Empire in the Second World War. Beginning the war as a barren hill that lacked modern equipment, it was eventually developed into a professional training centre that both served and benefitted from national, Imperial and Allied war efforts. Taking a ground-level view of Canadian Army training and inter-theatre learning, this article argues that army training camps, even those in the periphery, played a vital role in strengthening Imperial and Allied interoperability by facilitating knowledge transfer away from active …

Herpes Simplex Keratitis After Prk, Joshua Graf Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a double stranded DNA virus that infects much of the world’s population. The World Health Organization estimates 67% of people under the age of 50 have HSV-1 and 11% of people under the age of 50 have HSV-2. While most systemic infections remain inactive and do not cause symptoms, the activation and appearance of ocular HSV can be a destructive and vision-threatening issue. HSV keratitis can be epithelial, stromal or a combination. Patients who have recently undergone photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) have a higher risk of HSV keratitis. Because of this, HSV keratitis should be …

Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Optometric services in many parts of the world are unavailable, or when available, limited to those individuals who have the resources and proximity to gain access to them. Recognizing this disparity in availability of eyecare services, teams from developed countries have been volunteering to provide eyecare in these areas with such a need for many years. Over time, these groups have also adopted a mission of enhancing the local infrastructure to create long-term improvement. Method: All records from a VOSH clinical trip to Panama were retrospectively analyzed to determine the prevalence of ocular conditions diagnosed. Results: As expected, the …

Headache And Vision Loss As Initial Symptoms For An Acute Invasive Rhino-Orbital-Cerebral Mucormycosis, Thanh Le Od, Gregg Wentworth Od
Optometric Clinical Practice
Background: Acute invasive rhino-orbital-cerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) is a rare fungal infection commonly caused by Rhizopus species. It occurs in immune- compromised individuals who have acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), leukemia, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, or organ transplant patients who are on immunosuppressive therapy. Diagnosing invasive ROCM is challenging because its clinical presentation can be nonspecific, and it is not frequently observed in ophthalmic practices. Case Report: A 66-year-old Hispanic male with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus presented with the complaint of severe headache and retrobulbar pain in the right eye. An ophthalmic examination revealed normal ocular health in both eyes. Computerized tomography …

The recent commercialization of affordable and simplified tools has brought artificial intelligence out of the movies and research labs and into our homes and classrooms. Using Alexa, Siri, and ChatGPT has been simplified for the masses, but the algorithms behind these applications are steeped in mathematics and computer science. This paper will focus on gradient descent, an example of an optimization algorithm. The foundation of the algorithm as well as its applications and limitations will be explored. Finally, we will present a classic example of the gradient descent algorithm. To further analyze the method, the algorithm has been implemented in …

The mental preparation of a tennis player, or any athlete in general, is one of the most crucial characteristics for developing a successful personality. The will, control, and critical thinking are necessary at all stages of an athlete's development. The psychologic aspect is considered multidirectional and is often seen as a determining factor in the formation of the psychology of the winner. It additionally leads to the improvement of physical, technical, and tactical skills. People tend to forget about the importance of the mental aspect because of the daily routine. At the same time, the actual necessity of psychological strength …

Wittgenstein, Empiricism, And Pragmatism: Examining The Evolution Of Wittgensteinian Solipsism, Cody Davis
Academic Festival
In this paper I will argue for an interpretation of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus as a work of empiricism, as well as an argument for his Philosophical Investigations as a work of pragmatism, and how these two interpretations apply to Wittgenstein’s formulation of solipsism. Specifically, I will show how an empiricist understanding of the Tractatus leads Wittgenstein to his formulation of solipsism, which is untenable because it is unsayable. Similarly, I will show how a pragmatic understanding of the Investigations gives Wittgenstein a “way out” of his Tractarian solipsism, specifically with his formation of the private language argument as a …

The Movement Plans For The Quartet Op. 127 And The "Backstage" Of Beethoven's Late Style, Francesco Fontanelli
The Movement Plans For The Quartet Op. 127 And The "Backstage" Of Beethoven's Late Style, Francesco Fontanelli
The Beethoven Journal
Among the different sketch typologies in Beethoven’s hand, the so-called “telescoped drafts” are the most eloquent in conveying the composer’s vision and intentions. In these synoptic diagrams made up of musical ideas and notes in writing, Beethoven outlined the structure of the work he had in mind, fixing the decisive points (themes, keys, tempo markings, number and configuration of movements). Four movement plans are extant for the String Quartet Op. 127 in E-flat major, sketched between February 1823 and the summer of 1824; in each, the composer explores alternative ways of managing musical form and content.
This article discusses and …

Beethoven's Ukraine Connection: New Light On The Creation Of His Flute Variations Opp. 105 And 107, Barry Cooper
The Beethoven Journal
Two previously unidentified groups of sketches are revealed to be preliminary work for Beethoven’s last set of Flute Variations, Op. 107 No. 3. The theme is of Ukrainian origin, and the new discoveries are placed in the context of other manuscript material relating to the creation of the sixteen sets of flute variations, Opp. 105 and 107, which were commissioned by George Thomson. The extent of this preliminary work for Op. 107 No. 3 suggests that Beethoven spent much effort preparing the sixteen sets as a whole, and that the dearth of other sketches for them is probably due to …
Genius, Instrumental Music, And “Great Mistakes”: Amadeus Wendt And Beethoven’S Ninth Symphony, Sarah Clemmens Waltz
Genius, Instrumental Music, And “Great Mistakes”: Amadeus Wendt And Beethoven’S Ninth Symphony, Sarah Clemmens Waltz
The Beethoven Journal
The author attributes the anonymous 1826 Berliner allegemeine musikalische Zeitung (BamZ) review of the Leipzig performances of Beethoven’s Ninth, which suggests removal of the choral finale and inspires A.B. Marx to a passionate defense, to the critic Amadeus Wendt. The career of Wendt as a philosophy professor is firmly established, as is his criticism for the BamZ, Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung (AmZ), Cäcilia, Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung mit besonderer Rucksicht auf den österreichischen Kaiserstaat (WamZ), and other journals. Wendt’s Hoffmannesque opinions of instrumental music are contextualized via his extensive criticism of opera and vocal music, highlighting themes such as inappropriate virtuosity, (im)proper …
Faithful Integration: The Importance Of Worldview, Hermeneutics, And Theology For Christian Counseling, Nicole C. Biller
Faithful Integration: The Importance Of Worldview, Hermeneutics, And Theology For Christian Counseling, Nicole C. Biller
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
Efforts to integrate faith with psychological science and counseling have been present within Christian graduate programs for decades; however, questions remain about how to do this effectively. A brief review of integration efforts and a survey of the experience of graduate students within these programs reveal a desire to further model this practical integration within the classroom. Possible solutions emphasize a biblically informed worldview, intentionally crafted hermeneutics, and well developed theology, which can lead to faith-informed counseling practices.
Exploring How Pentecostals Preach About Depression, Robert D. Mcbain
Exploring How Pentecostals Preach About Depression, Robert D. Mcbain
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
A qualitative analysis was completed on twelve sermons into how Pentecostal preachers talk about depression from the pulpit using the Assemblies of God (AG) as a purposive sample. Findings illustrate that preachers talked about faulty thinking as the source of depression and interpreted depression as a transformative journey occurring within the context of a God encounter where the believer fixed their faulty thinking. While the way the preachers interpreted depression is not without critique, the article suggests that preaching about depression as a journey of encounter may help listeners frame their depression experiences within a narrative framework that helps them …
The Role Of Spirituality In The Lives Of Counselors: Reframing The Focus, Greg A. Meyer
The Role Of Spirituality In The Lives Of Counselors: Reframing The Focus, Greg A. Meyer
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
The term spirituality is often hard to hear without prior, preconceived ideas and bias attached to it, and is often used interchangeably with other words, depending on one’s past and culture. The field of counselor education and supervision has also used the term in ambiguous ways, which has led to apprehension and a lack of clarity with which the term is taught and understood. This paper explains the historical focus of spirituality within the counselor education field, then redefines the focus towards the lives of counselors, but more specifically the lives of counseling students and the impact counselor educators might …

Building Bridges: A Student-Professor Dialogue About Spiritual Assumptions And Perspectives On Whiteness, Kyle N. Stueber, Andrea C. Walker
Salubritas: International Journal of Spirit-Empowered Counseling
One day in May during a recent year, a conversation began that launched several years of ongoing dialogue. A graduate student, Kyle, reached out to a graduate counseling professor, Andrea, to discuss some concerns and anxieties he felt in some of his class discussions. What began as a conversation about racial diversity in the counseling setting evolved into an exploration of different ways of looking at the sociocultural context of race in the United States, a topic discovered to have political and theological underpinnings. As a result of the dialogue, we realized that specific preconceived labels identifying political, theological, denominational, …

Fast Playback Of Burst Audio Packets, Avinash Malipatil
Defensive Publications Series
A jitter buffer manager (JBM) is a module in a live-stream audio receiver that attempts to keep up with the live stream when the reception of packets is bursty. JBMs typically work by dropping late-arrival packets, which can lead to gaps during audio playback. This disclosure describes techniques to reduce or eliminate audio breakages due to bursty packets by queuing packets dropped by the jitter buffer manager into a dropped-packets queue and by playing dropped-and-recovered audio frames faster, such that audio is not lost. The playback speed is based on the present length of the dropped-packets queue. The techniques advantageously …

Groff V. Dejoy And Title Vii's "Undue Hardship" Standard, Natalie C. Rhoads
Liberty University Law Review
In June 2023, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Groff v. DeJoy, where it clarified the standard governing an employer’s obligation to make a religious accommodation under Title VII. For over 50 years, lower courts had been using the Court’s language in Trans World Airlines, Inc. v. Hardison, that a religious accommodation constitutes an “undue hardship” under Title VII if it would cause the employer to incur “more than a de minimis cost.” This Article explains the flawed Hardison standard and analyzes the Court’s decision in Groff, including the Court’s statement that an “undue hardship” under …

303 Creative And The Question Of Governmental Authority To Dictate Commercial Transactions, Rena M. Lindevaldsen
Liberty University Law Review
In June 2023, the nation awaited a decision from the United States Supreme Court in 303 Creative LLC v. Elenis. At its core, the case presented the question of whether free speech rights outweighed a state’s interest in prohibiting discrimination through its public accommodation laws. If the Supreme Court had ruled against 303 Creative and compelled its owner, Lorie Smith, to design a website for same-sex weddings despite Ms. Smith’s sincerely-held religious beliefs that such marriages are not biblical, free speech rights in America would have been at the mercy of what the majority deemed acceptable speech.
Although the …

Biden V. Nebraska: Student Loan Debt Forgiveness And The Dangers Of The Administrative State, Rodney D. Chrisman
Liberty University Law Review
In April of 2020, then-candidate Joe Biden promised that, if he were elected to the Presidency, he would “[i]mmediately cancel a minimum of $10,000 of student debt per person, as proposed by Senator Warren in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.” Once in office, the Biden administration found that Congress would not pass the type of extensive student loan debt forgiveness that the President wanted. Accordingly, President Biden did what has become all too common in recent presidential administrations— he acted by executive fiat through an administrative agency to accomplish a policy goal that he could not get passed through …
