Improvements To Testing And Packaging Technology For Silicon Photonics Research And Development, Eric Thornton
Improvements To Testing And Packaging Technology For Silicon Photonics Research And Development, Eric Thornton
Theses
Silicon photonics is an emerging field that aims to integrate traditional digital CMOS logic with micro scale optical components made using silicon onto the same chip in order to overcome recent bottlenecks related to information transfer through copper interconnects. The end goal of silicon photonics is to use optical links, integrated together with modulators (devices that translate between the electrical and optical systems) controlled by traditional CMOS logic, packaged in familiar form factors, and interfaced using traditional digital serial protocols. However, groups involved in the research and development of silicon optical components do not work with these fully integrated designs …
Gestalt Language Processing In Accredited Communication Sciences And Disorders Programs, William Harris
Gestalt Language Processing In Accredited Communication Sciences And Disorders Programs, William Harris
Master's Theses
The language development and usage of autistic individuals has become a controversial topic in many of the disciplines and professions providing support to these individuals. As a result, two theories of language processing have been proposed. Analytical language processing suggests that children process and develop language from its most simple form, a phoneme, to its most complex form, a word or phrase. However, the theory of gestalt language processing proposes that some children may instead extract larger, more complex language such as whole words and phrases first and break it down to the simpler language. Gestalt language processing is often …
The Impact Of Target Sex Typicality On Participant's Willingness To Engage In Prosocial Behaviors, Olajuwon Olagbegi
The Impact Of Target Sex Typicality On Participant's Willingness To Engage In Prosocial Behaviors, Olajuwon Olagbegi
Master's Theses
One’s decision to engage in prosocial behavior relies on various pieces of social information. The physical attractiveness of a social target could inform a perceiver’s subsequent intentions. In identifying which aspect of physical attractiveness could inform these decisions, it could be possible that prosocial decisions are heightened among those with sex-typical facial structures. This study explored the extent to which sex-typical facial structures informed perceivers’ interest in the context of social activism. Participants imagined themselves as responding to a request from a social target, deciding how behavior with high-cost and low-cost options. The male or female social target was manipulated …
3d Analysis Of Fe-Ti Oxides And How They Affect Crystal-Plastic Deformation In Atlantis Bank, Southwest Indian Ridge, Sarah Hill
Master's Theses
This project focuses on the importance of the relationship between Fe-Ti oxide abundance and interconnectivity, and crystal-plastic deformation in Atlantis Bank, Southwest Indian Ridge by utilizing Micro-CT scanning. This was done through comparing the Micro-CT scans of 15 samples from three different Ocean Drilling Program and International Ocean Discovery Program drill holes using the Nikon NIS Advanced Research 3-D visualization program and producing plots and statistics from MATLAB. Results indicate a wide range of textures across a range of crystal-plastic fabric intensity and Fe-Ti oxide abundance. Ultimately, there was a generally positive relationship between depth, CPF intensity, and Fe-Ti oxide …
Assessing The Independent Role Of Moral Foundations In Attitudes Toward Various Justifications For Abortion, Saba Shahid
Assessing The Independent Role Of Moral Foundations In Attitudes Toward Various Justifications For Abortion, Saba Shahid
Master's Theses
Although many states have legal frameworks that restrict abortion to certain situations, largely associated with health risks to the mother, child or both, other factors, such as financial stability, emotional readiness, and partner's presence, are not covered by existing laws, though they may be critical factors contributing to abortion decisions. To assess the role of these factors, participants (N= 302) were recruited online via Prolific Academic and randomly assigned on a between participants basis to view a single vignette that manipulated abortion justification category (financial, emotional, partner) and the presence/absence of justification. They reported the extent to which …
Satellite Image Analysis And Sidewalk Classification Using Deep Learning Models, Subeksha Khanal
Satellite Image Analysis And Sidewalk Classification Using Deep Learning Models, Subeksha Khanal
Master's Theses
Lack of sidewalk pavement can contribute to pedestrian fatalities and injuries in the USA. Although many researchers have conducted research on sidewalk detection, there are not many publicly available datasets that we would work on for sidewalk classification. In this study, I conducted classification tasks using pretrained CNN models including VGG16 and ResNet50. I extended these models by adding custom layers at the top of pretrained layers, employing various techniques to improve the classification accuracy.
The dataset comprises 4,731 images of sidewalk based on occlusion levels, including images where the sidewalk is visible from overhead and instances where sidewalk is …
Evaluating The Efficacy Of Detection Instructions On Additive And Contradictory Misinformation In Older And Younger Adults Using Eyewitnessed Visual Scenes, Monika Mazela
Master's Theses
Exposure to misleading details about a previous event can become incorporated into memory—a pattern termed the misinformation effect. Recently, researchers have found evidence for two types of misinformation which differ qualitatively in how they relate to details presented in the initial event. Contradictory misinformation refers to suggested details that directly contrast specific details that were presented within the witnessed event. Additive misinformation refers to suggested details that supplement a witnessed event, but do not contrast a specific detail. My thesis evaluated whether misinformation is reduced following a strong warning to detect and highlight misinformation compared to no warning and …
Euro Interest Rate Swap Yields: Some Ardl Models, Khawaja Mamun
Euro Interest Rate Swap Yields: Some Ardl Models, Khawaja Mamun
WCBT Working Papers
This paper examines the dynamics of euro-denominated (EUR) long-term interest rate swap yields. It shows that the short-term interest rate has an economically and statistically significant effect on EUR swap yields of different maturity tenors, after controlling for various key macroeconomic variables. It presents several autoregressive distributive lag (ARDL) models of the dynamics of EUR swap yields. The estimated econometric models of EUR swap yields of different maturity tenors imply that the European Central Bank (ECB) exerts substantial influence on interest rate swap yields, primarily through the effect of its actions on the current short-term interest rate. Examining the case …
Geometric Identification Of Discrete Painlevé Equations, Logan Moore
Geometric Identification Of Discrete Painlevé Equations, Logan Moore
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis determines the type of a particular discrete Painlevé equation using a geometric approach based on Sakai theory. Previous work on discrete Painlevé equations has connected the dynamics of these equations to actions of their symmetry groups on certain families of rational algebraic surfaces. There is a known procedure for identifying the geometry of a discrete Painlevé equation from its birational mapping. This thesis uses this known procedure to determine the type of a particular discrete Painlevé equation appearing in [9].

The Deaf Experience In National Parks With An Emphasis On Rocky Mountain National Park, Madeline Dannewitz
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This research investigated the experiences of Deaf visitors to the Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP). The little research available focuses on how the National Park Service and its workers interact with Deaf people. Conversely, this study investigated the experiences of Deaf people and their perspective regarding interacting with the park and its members. A study regarding Deaf visitors in Yosemite National Park found that many were invisible to its employees. The desire from the Deaf community and lack of research shows the significance of this study. This analysis is crucial to the human experience as quality of life is improved …

Examining Population Structure Of Cismontane And Desert Populations Of Zebra-Tailed Lizards (Callisaurus Draconoides) Using Mitochondrial And Nuclear Intron Dna., Lauren Nicole Morrison
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Callisaurus draconoides, also known as the Zebra-Tailed lizard, belongs to the family Phrynosomatidae family (Pianka, et al. 1972). C. draconoides is a widespread desert lizard found western North America. In California, this species can be found in the Mojave and Colorado Deserts. There are currently several populations that reside in the San Bernardino basin on the cismontane side of the Transverse and Peninsular ranges. These mountain ranges have the potential to have isolated the cismontane populations from their typical desert ranges. In addition, geological passes have the potential to serve as migration corridor between the Deserts and cismontane regions. The …

Cannibals, Chemicals, And A Trip Down Memory Lane: Unraveling Our Understanding Of Memory, Yana Honcharuk
Scientific Kenyon: The Neuroscience Edition
Have you ever wished to preserve a memory forever? Or perhaps share a treasured memory with someone? Instead of having to look for words that could describe how you felt at the concert of your favorite band or at that first date with a person you’ve been pining for, wouldn’t it be nice to have the ability to transmit those experiences to your friends? To make them feel how you felt? While this sounds like a plot for another rendition of Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, or a chapter from Harry Potter, the scientific idea of memory transfer has …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Opioid Use Disorder In Human Brain Models, Emily Mendez
Molecular Mechanisms Of Opioid Use Disorder In Human Brain Models, Emily Mendez
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Opioid use disorder (OUD) is a national and global public health crisis with no end in sight. While studies from animal models hint at widespread epigenetic and transcriptomic alterations of opioid drugs, the molecular consequences of long-term exposure to opioid drugs in human brain is still unclear, and human-centered translational models are necessary to discern the human cell type-specific effects of OUD.
Using postmortem brain Brodmann area 9 (BA9) from the UTHealth Brain Collection for Research on Psychiatric Disorders, I identified angiogenic gene networks perturbed in the RNA and protein of OUD subjects, as well as downregulation of many neuron-correlated …

Towards A Decolonial Developmental Science: Adolescent Development In The Majority World Taking Center Stage, Amina Abubakar, Angelo Costa, Lixian Cui, Silvia Koller, Chidozie Nwafor, Vaishali Raval
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
While aspiring to be a diverse and global science, developmental science continues to be dominated by EuroAmerican epistemologies, researchers, and communities in its published scholarship. Adolescents in communities across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America comprise 85% of the world's adolescent population, and yet their experiences and perspectives are marginalized in our science. Adolescents in the Majority World live in highly diverse social, cultural, political, economic, educational and healthcare contexts that contribute to their development, and we have much to learn from their experiences. This article situates the marginalization of the global majority within coloniality embedded in developmental …

Generative Interpretation, Yonathan A. Arbel, David A. Hoffman
Generative Interpretation, Yonathan A. Arbel, David A. Hoffman

We introduce generative interpretation, a new approach to estimating contractual meaning using large language models. As AI triumphalism is the order of the day, we proceed by way of grounded case studies, each illustrating the capabilities of these novel tools in distinct ways. Taking well-known contracts opinions, and sourcing the actual agreements that they adjudicated, we show that AI models can help factfinders ascertain ordinary meaning in context, quantify ambiguity, and fill gaps in parties' agreements. We also illustrate how models can calculate the probative value of individual pieces of extrinsic evidence.
After offering best practices for the use of …

Over the past few years, small satellites have become heavily utilized for both constellations and single vehicle missions. Many organizations have learned how to be successful with these platforms however, while small, they are not simple systems and first-time creators of these systems still suffer high rates of failure. AFRL's Small Satellite Portfolio has established guiding practices/principles for satellite design that help reduce overall mission risk based upon both community and internal lessons learned. These principles help make the design technically resilient and can also help with programmatic execution. This paper will discuss the principles with some detail (such as …

Ecologies Of Teaching With Bilingual Students: Connecting Identity, Agency, And Assessment In First-Year Writing Class, Sumantha Nikole Zapata
Theses and Dissertations
As many students who graduate from high school transition into applying for college or university, they are not aware of the drastic changes that come with it. For bilingual students, this transition can be much more challenging due to their language barrier and the lack of support they may receive. The intersection of demographics, pedagogy, and linguistic agency led to the research question for this study: how can pedagogies in first-year writing classes be adjusted or developed to justly educate and assess bilingual students who are still working toward competence in English? The history of bilingual education …

Symposium On Scholars’ Suggestions For Amendments, And Issues Raised By Artificial Intelligence
Fordham Law Review
CHAIR SCHILTZ: As those of you who have been in the rules work for a while know, rules work is cyclical. During the time I’ve been Chair of the Advisory Committee on Evidence Rules, we’ve had two packages of amendments that have gone through. The first package will take effect on December 1, 2024, and that’s the package that is led by the amendment to Rule 702 on expert testimony. And then we have another package that was just approved by the Judicial Conference and sent to the U.S. Supreme Court, and that package is led by the new rule …
American Democracy And The State Constitutional Convention, Jonathan L. Marshfield
American Democracy And The State Constitutional Convention, Jonathan L. Marshfield
Fordham Law Review
Fears about the health of American democracy are high. And with the U.S. Supreme Court loosening federal constraints and returning critical substantive issues to the states, there is new and particular interest in the democratic quality of state institutions. Although some see opportunity in this decentralization, there is also good reason to believe that many states are failing to deliver on America’s democratic ideals. There are growing concerns, for example, that many state legislatures are enacting laws wildly misaligned with majority preferences on important issues like guns, abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and healthcare. There are also deeper structural concerns regarding partisan …
Branding Corporate Criminals, W. Robert Thomas, Milhailis E. Diamantis
Branding Corporate Criminals, W. Robert Thomas, Milhailis E. Diamantis
Fordham Law Review
Corporate punishment has a branding problem. Criminal sanctions should call out wrongdoing and condemn wrongdoers. In a world where generic corporate misconduct is a daily affair, conviction singles out truly contemptible practices from merely sharp, unproductive, or undesirable ones. In this way, criminal law gives victims the recognition they deserve, deters future wrongdoers who want to preserve their good name, and publicly reinforces society’s most treasured values.
Unfortunately, corporate punishment falls far short of all these communicative ambitions. For punishment to convey its intended message, society must be able to hear about it. When courts convict individuals, everyone understands that …

Gene Patents: Striking The Right Balance Between Incentive And Innovation, Josh Saul
Fordham Law Review
The U.S. Supreme Court held human genes to be unpatentable subject matter in Association for Molecular Pathology v. Myriad Genetics, Inc. The implications from this decision were, and to a large extent still are, unclear. However, in the decade since this decision, a number of studies have begun to shed light on the fallout of Myriad. This Note examines such studies and finds that they suggest a decline in investment and innovation in the biotech industry. In order to promote research and innovation in the field of genetics, this Note then advocates for legislative action to reestablish the …

Policy-Based Remote User Authentication From Multi-Biometrics, Yangguang Tian, Yingjiu Li, Robert H. Deng, Guomin Yang, Nan Li
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we introduce the first generic framework of policy-based remote user authentication from multiple biometrics. The proposed framework allows an authorized user to remotely authenticate herself to an authentication server using her multiple biometrics, which enhances both the security and usability of user authentications. The authentication server approves a user's authentication request if and only if the user's multiple biometrics satisfies an authentication policy. In particular, the authentication policy can be dynamically updated to satisfy different security and usability requirements in practice. We implement an instantiation of the proposed framework and report its performance under various authentication policies.
