Predicting Iot Distributed Ledger Fraud Transactions With A Lightweight Gan Network, Charles Rawlins, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Predicting Iot Distributed Ledger Fraud Transactions With A Lightweight Gan Network, Charles Rawlins, Jagannathan Sarangapani
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Decision-making and consensus in traditional blockchain protocols is formulated as a repeated Bernoulli trial that solves a computationally intense lottery puzzle, called Proof-of-Work (PoW) in Bitcoin. This approach has shown robustness through practice but does not scale with increasing network size and generation of new transactions. Resource constrained Internet of Things (IoT) networks are incompatible with full computation of schemes like Bitcoin's PoW. Our effort proposes a first step towards an alternative consensus using machine learning-based decision-making with prediction of fraud transactions to alleviate need for intense computation. To improve base approval probabilities for fraud detection in an ideal security …

The soil freezing characteristic curve (SFCC) plays a crucial role in investigating the soil freezing-thawing process. Due to the challenges associated with measuring the SFCC, there is a shortage of high-quality or rigorous test results with sufficient metadata to be effectively used for applications. Current researchers typically conduct freezing tests to measure the SFCC and assume a singular SFCC when studying the freezing-thawing process of soils, although limited studies indicated that there is a hysteresis during the freezing and thawing process. In this paper, a series of freezing-thawing tests were performed to assess the SFCC, utilizing a precise nuclear magnetic …
Eighth-Order Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Eighth-Order Foldy-Wouthuysen Transformation, Ulrich D. Jentschura
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The calculation of higher-order binding corrections to bound systems is a fundamental problem of theoretical physics. For any nonrelativistic expansion, one needs the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, which disentangles the particle and the antiparticle degrees of freedom. This transformation is carried out here to eighth order in the momenta or to eighth order in the momentum operators, which is equivalent to the eighth order of the fine-structure constant. Matrix elements of the eighth-order terms are evaluated for F5/2 and F7/2 states in hydrogenlike ions and compared with the Dirac-Coulomb energy levels.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electrification of adsorption processes is emerging as an adaptable solution for future gas separations. This study develops magnetic sorbent structures for use in induction vacuum swing adsorption (IVSA) process specifically designed for olefin/paraffin separation. Two sorbents, namely Fe3O4/ZIF-7 (ethane-selective) and Fe3O4/13X (ethylene-selective) were developed and formulated into extrudates (Fe20/ZIF-7-P) and monoliths (Fe20/13X-M), and tested under different regeneration scenarios, including simultaneous and subsequent induction-evacuation, induction only, and evacuation only. The dynamic adsorption results demonstrated that regeneration under subsequent induction-evacuation improves desorption rate and capability. Under this regeneration scenario, Fe …

This Article demonstrates how hierarchies in the international economy and in international financial institutions have facilitated the U.S.-led Global War on Terror (GWOT). Using U.S.-Pakistan relations as a case study, it shows how the United States has deployed its powerful position at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to claim Pakistan's consent for its military activities in the region. In the GWOT's first decade, beginning in 2001, the United States openly sought forcible regime change, as in Afghanistan and Iraq; in its second and (now) third decades, the United States has waged covert counterinsurgency campaigns allegedly against militant groups in Muslim-majority …

The species-specific migratory patterns and strategies of many songbirds remain unknown or understudied, as research in animal ecology is biased toward the breeding period, with the fewest studies on the migratory period across taxa. Identifying large-scale spatiotemporal migratory patterns is challenging, as individuals within a species may vary in their migratory behavior and strategies. The Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia) is a Nearctic-Neotropical migrant that is relatively well studied during the breeding season, but its species-wide migratory patterns remain understudied. Our aim in studying Yellow Warbler movement ecology was to characterize temporal migration patterns during fall migration. We sought …

Explainable Artificial Intelligence: Methods And Evaluation, Gayane Grigoryan
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A wide array of techniques within explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) have been developed to measure the importance of features in machine learning models. A notable portion of these methods draws upon principles of cooperative game theory (CGT), with the Shapley value emerging as a widely used solution concept. Despite the rising prominence of the Shapley value, other promising solutions from cooperative game theory—such as the Nucleolus, Banzhaf power index, Shapley-Shubik power index, and solutions to conflicting claims problems—have been comparatively overlooked, even though they hold significant potential. In this dissertation, multiple XAI methods based on these other CGT solutions are …
Tracing The Development Of Trust In Automation/Autonomy In A Multitasking Environment, Tetsuya Sato
Tracing The Development Of Trust In Automation/Autonomy In A Multitasking Environment, Tetsuya Sato
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Future Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) operations will likely involve autonomous systems that exceed the capabilities of a typical automation. However, human operators could use such systems counterproductively by either misusing unreliable systems or disusing reliable systems. One determinant for inappropriate use of autonomous systems is trust. Human factors theorists proposed numerous ways to characterize trust such as the tripartite model of trust that describes the bases of trust in automation (i.e., performance, process, and purpose; Lee & See, 2004). Previous works have indicated that participants rated lower performance- and process-based trust toward the automation when the tracking task required more …
Pediatric Oral Health Literacy Among Caregivers Of Young Children, Melissa L. Sullivan
Pediatric Oral Health Literacy Among Caregivers Of Young Children, Melissa L. Sullivan
Health Services Research Dissertations
Early childhood caries (ECC) is a common dental condition that affects the primary teeth of infants and young children. ECC can have a significant negative impact on a child’s oral health and overall well-being. Caregivers have an important role in the prevention of early childhood caries through knowledge, understanding, and awareness of good oral hygiene practices. Caregivers who possess adequate oral health literacy (OHL) may be more likely to recognize the risks associated with ECC, implement proper oral hygiene practices, and make informed oral health choices for themselves and their child.
The overarching purpose of this dissertation is to explore …
Investigation Of Cooperative Subradiance In Dense Ultracold Rubidium Ensembles, Brent Michael Jones
Investigation Of Cooperative Subradiance In Dense Ultracold Rubidium Ensembles, Brent Michael Jones
Physics Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation presents results of an experimental investigation of the time resolved fluorescence from a cold and dense ensemble of 87Rb atoms after the sample is illuminated by a short probe pulse. The goal of the experiment was to investigate cooperative subradiant behavior, characterized by a much longer decay time compared to the natural lifetime, induced in an off resonant probe regime. Such long lived states, if controllable, would provide a means to store quantum information. The samples were initially created in a magnetooptical trap before atoms were loaded into a far off resonance trap to achieve atomic densities …
Leveraging Blockchain For Trust Enhancement In Decentralized Marketplaces: A Reputation System Perspective, Meshari Mohammd Aljohani
Leveraging Blockchain For Trust Enhancement In Decentralized Marketplaces: A Reputation System Perspective, Meshari Mohammd Aljohani
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Centralized marketplaces provide reliable reputation services through a central authority, but this raises concerns about single points of failure, user privacy, and data security. Decentralized marketplaces have emerged to address these issues by enhancing user privacy and transparency and eliminating single points of failure. However, decentralized marketplaces face the challenge of maintaining user trust without a centralized authority. Current blockchain-based marketplaces rely on subjective buyer feedback. Additionally, the transparency in these systems can deter honest reviews due to fear of seller retaliation. To address these issues, we propose a trust and reputation system using blockchain and smart contracts. Our system …
A Portable Numerical Library For The Calculation Of Multi-Dimensional Integrals, Ioannis Sakiotis
A Portable Numerical Library For The Calculation Of Multi-Dimensional Integrals, Ioannis Sakiotis
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Multi-dimensional numerical integration is a prevalent task in physics and other scientific fields, e.g., in the simulation of particle-beam dynamics and Bayesian parameter estimation. Scientific computing applications that simulate complex phenomena may require the solution to numerous multi-variate integrals. However, functions that have features such as sharp peaks or oscillations in high dimensional spaces, can result in an exorbitant number of computations. For many cases, convergence to accurate results in a reasonable amount of time is infeasible with existing numerical libraries. One approach towards making multi-dimensional integration viable is to parallelize existing algorithms. No commonly available algorithms or libraries exist …

Adopt: An Environmentally-Friendly System For Alerting Drivers To Occluded Pedestrians Traffic, Abrar Abdulrahman Alali
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
The emergence of sensing technologies and vehicular communications has brought significant opportunities for enhancing pedestrian safety on city streets. However, existing solutions rely on costly technologies such as computer vision and trajectory prediction to detect crossing pedestrians, while they have limits in detecting pedestrians who are occluded by parked cars. Despite the presence of collaborative perception by surrounding vehicles and infrastructure, there is a notable absence of incorporating existing parked cars themselves due to their insufficiency in detecting pedestrians and communicating with other cars while they are turned off. Furthermore, accommodating pedestrians on streets has been linked to an additional …

Contributions To Nonparametric Testing In Clustered Data, Hasika Kalani Wickrama Senevirathne
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
Clustered data refers to a specific kind of correlated data where units within the same cluster are correlated while units from different clusters are independent. The number of units in each cluster, known as the cluster size, can be associated with the cluster’s outcome. This is known as the informative cluster size (ICS) and affects the inference drawn from clustered data. Recently, a hypothesis testing method has been developed to detect the presence of ICS. However, considering ICS alone may not be sufficient when comparing outcomes across multiple groups of units within clustered data. The size of a group within …

Who Wrote The Scientific News? Improving The Discernibility Of Llms To Human-Written Scientific News, Dominik Soós
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Large Language Models (LLMs) have rapidly advanced the field of Natural Language Processing and become powerful tools for generating and evaluating scientific text. Although LLMs have demonstrated promising as evaluators for certain text generation tasks, there is still a gap until they are used as reliable text evaluators for general purposes. In this thesis project, I attempted to fill this gap by examining the discernibility of LLMs from human-written and LLM-generated scientific news. This research demonstrated that although it was relatively straightforward for humans to discern scientific news written by humans from scientific news generated by GPT-3.5 using basic prompts, …
Effects Of Ordered Eating On Various Postprandial Measures, Brian K. Ferguson
Effects Of Ordered Eating On Various Postprandial Measures, Brian K. Ferguson
Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Postprandial glucose (PPG) is an indicator of acute and chronic overall health, and aberrations in glucose, insulin, and other postprandial (PP) markers are common in obesity and cardiometabolic disorders. Chronically elevated glucose can lead to a number of health problems such as type 2 diabetes mellitus. Additionally, PPG responses can impact substrate utilization responses to exercise, which may have implications for both healthy and diseased populations. One potentially simple lifestyle modification to alter PPG and related markers is to change the order in which foods are consumed within meals. The purpose of this dissertation was to further explore the impact …

The Ecological Applications Of Δ17O: Validating A Novel Technique For Assessing Animal Metabolism And Water Intake, Zachary Taylor Steele
The Ecological Applications Of Δ17O: Validating A Novel Technique For Assessing Animal Metabolism And Water Intake, Zachary Taylor Steele
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Animals obtain water via different processes such as drinking, consuming food, and through metabolic processes like at the end of the electron transport chain when atmospheric oxygen is combined with hydrogen to form ‘cytochrome oxidase water’. Assessing animal water flux and metabolism has mainly been conducted via stable isotope analysis (SIA) of biological samples using hydrogen (2H) and oxygen isotopes (16O, 17O, and 18O; Δ17O), typically using enriched isotope tracers. However, natural abundance isotope modeling offers an approach for conducting SIA of biological samples that differs because it relies on the unique, …

Privacy-Preserving Deep Learning Framework For Iot Malware Detection, Sabbir Ahmed Khan
Computer Science Theses & Dissertations
Cyberattacks on IoT devices are accelerating at an unprecedented rate, largely driven by IoT malware activities. The IoT malware attacks typically comprise three stages: intrusion, infection, and monetization. Existing IoT malware detection methods fail to identify malicious activities at the intrusion and infection stages and thus cannot stop potential attacks timely. In our research, we have leveraged power side-channel information as input to our deep learning model to identify malware at early stages of intrusion on IoT devices. But, deploying a resource-intensive deep learning model on highly resource-constrained IoT devices is a significant challenge. Consequently, utilizing a Machine Learning as …

Accelerating The Efficiency Of Multiscale Hybridizable Discontinuos Galerkin Methods For Flows In Heterogeneous Media, Tony Charles Haines
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
A plethora of scientific and engineering problems encountered are multiscale in nature. This multiscale feature often influences simulation efforts wherever large disparities in spatial scales are experienced. Notable examples include composite materials, fluid flow through porous media and turbulent transport in high Reynolds number flow. Although there are promising results from the advancement of modern supercomputer, obtaining direct numerical solution of multiscale problems is very laborious. This difficulty stems from the tremendous amount of computer memory and CPU time required. Parallel computing may be one obvious choice in remedying this issue. However, the complexity and size of the discrete problem …
