Young Driver Training And Socioeconomic Status: A Human-In-The-Loop Driving Simulator Evaluation, Jeffrey Edward Glassman
Young Driver Training And Socioeconomic Status: A Human-In-The-Loop Driving Simulator Evaluation, Jeffrey Edward Glassman
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Previous research consistently shows that young drivers are poor at anticipating latent hazards on the roadway compared to more experienced drivers. The Road Awareness and Perception Training (RAPT) program is a driver training program that aims to accelerate young drivers’ learning of hazard anticipation (HA) skills. More recent research has started showing evidence that RAPT may be even more effective at reducing accidents for young drivers with a lower socioeconomic status (SES), though the direct impact of RAPT on HA skills in the driver population is yet unclear. The current experiment thus directly evaluated the effectiveness of RAPT on the …
Parallel-In-Time Implicit Schemes For Nonlinear Pdes, Subhash Paudel
Parallel-In-Time Implicit Schemes For Nonlinear Pdes, Subhash Paudel
Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations
An accurate prediction of unsteady physical phenomena arising in various applications (e.g., rotorcraft and turbomachinery flows, fluid-structure interaction, maneuvering flight conditions, etc.) requires a very large number of time steps, thus considerably increasing the total computational time, because conventional time integrators are inherently sequential. Parallel-in-time methods offer a promising direction for drastically reducing the computational time and achieving such scalability that is required for solving these unsteady problems on modern supercomputers with hundreds of thousands of computing cores. The parallel performance of existing parallel-in-time algorithms for nonlinear equations especially of the hyperbolic or mixed type is far from being satisfactory. …
The Impact Of Peer Observational Learning On Honesty Following A Transgression, Hannah M. Sliman
The Impact Of Peer Observational Learning On Honesty Following A Transgression, Hannah M. Sliman
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Parents and teachers concerns about the development and socialization of lying aligns with research suggesting that persistent lying is related with delinquency, aggression, and conduct problems. We were interested in examining the difference between two groups: Honest and Praise (HP), and Control Group (CG) for the extent to which exposure to the experimental condition influenced a child’s decision to be honest and confess after a transgression. The study was designed to examine the extent to which observing peers of similar age receiving praise for being honest can promote honesty amongst children. Further, the study determined if gender influences honest reporting. …
Associations Between Combat Exposure, Moral Injury, And Suicidality Among U.S. Military Members: The Moderating Impact Of Positive Rumination, Jeffrey M. Gabelmann
Associations Between Combat Exposure, Moral Injury, And Suicidality Among U.S. Military Members: The Moderating Impact Of Positive Rumination, Jeffrey M. Gabelmann
Psychology Theses & Dissertations
Numerous studies have documented the risk for suicide among recent-era veterans with combat experience. Recently, moral injury has emerged as a possible contributor to suicidality in veterans. To that end, no study has approached the combat exposure-moral injury-suicidality link with a focus grounded in positive psychology. Specifically, the present study explored whether positive rumination, or the reflection on positive emotions and moods, may buffer the deleterious effects of potentially traumatic experiences in warzones on moral injury and suicidality. This study was a secondary analysis of 250 current or former U.S. military members (Mage = 33.3 years) who had …

Decriminalizing Academia: Black First-Generation Community College Students In Unsatisfactory Academic Standing, Gerome Maurice Bell, Jr.
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
Community colleges serve as critical access points to higher education for Black students. However, current outcomes suggest that Black students are not being properly served in America’s community colleges. Although well-meaning institutional leaders often create policies and programs aimed at improving success rates for students from marginalized backgrounds, too often, the voices of those directly impacted by the policy are not considered. Consequently, little is known about the lived experiences of Black first-generation community college students, especially those in unsatisfactory academic standing. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Black first-generation students on …

Use Of Ultrasound For Identification Of Musculoskeletal Injury In Active Populations, Kathleen Karen Hogan
Rehabilitation Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Lower extremity tendinopathies and fasciopathy conditions are prevalent amongst sedentary individuals,1,2 athletes,3,4 elite runners,5,6and military personnel7 and can lead to chronic disability and reduction in quality of life. 8,9 Both tendinopathy and fasciopathy are thought to be mechanical in nature and caused by acute or chronic overloading leading to a disruption in the uniformity of the soft tissue structure. Ultrasound imaging has gained popularity in the last decade among many sports medicine clinicians to gain information regarding tissue structure for musculoskeletal injury (MKSI) management. Ultrasound imaging allows for the evaluation of in-vivo structures and at …

The proposed Integrated Space Test Lexicon is intended to amalgamate the numerous definitions of integrated (IT or IT&E), development test (DT or DT&E), and operational test (OT or OT&E) into unified, service-wide definitions, aligned with the Space Test Enterprise Vision. Refining such definitions will help distill the core characteristics of these fundamental test types to first identify space system activities composing what is traditionally known as DT and OT, then to provide a means of how these activities fit into the IT paradigm and support space system development. In forging a common understanding of how DT and OT support space …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Detection of measurable residual disease (MRD) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is an important prognostic marker. The most common CLL MRD method in current use is multiparameter flow cytometry, but availability is limited by the need for expert manual analysis. Automated analysis has the potential to expand access to CLL MRD testing. We evaluated the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted multiparameter flow cytometry (MFC) workflow for CLL MRD. We randomly selected 113 CLL MRD FCS files and divided them into training and validation sets. The training set (n = 41) was gated by expert manual analysis and used to …

Background
Forensic nurse examiners, including sexual assault nurse examiners, provide care for survivors holistically through healthcare, emotional support, connection to follow-up care, safety planning, and, if desired, evidence collection to aid in the prosecution of sexual assault. There is increasing recognition that trauma-informed care must also include an understanding of the impacts of structural violence on minoritized patients to ensure health equity.
Aim
To help address this guidance gap, we expanded Campbell and colleagues' empowering care model using a trauma- and violence-informed care (TVIC) lens.
Methods
We used an iterative discussion-based process that included five joint meetings between a seven-member …

Mucus provides a protective barrier that is crucial for host defense in the lungs. However, excessive or abnormal mucus can have pathophysiological consequences in many pulmonary diseases, including asthma. Patients with asthma are treated with agents that relax airway smooth muscle and reduce airway inflammation, but responses are often inadequate. In part, this is due to the inability of existing therapeutic agents to directly target mucus. Accordingly, there is a critical need to better understand how mucus hypersecretion and airway plugging are affected by the epithelial cells that synthesize, secrete, and transport mucus components. This review highlights recent advances in …

BACKGROUND: A bioactive myelin basic protein (MBP) fragment, comprising MBP
METHODS: In male and female normal and post-CCI rat sciatic nerves, we assessed: (i) cholesterol precursor and metabolite levels by lipidomics; (ii) MBP
RESULTS: CCI regulated LXRα ligand and receptor levels in nerves of both sexes, with cholesterol precursors, desmosterol and 7-DHC, and oxysterol elevated in females relative to males. MBP
CONCLUSION: The injury-released bioactive MBP fragments induce pronociceptive changes by selective inactivation of nuclear transcription factors, including LXRα. By Ncoa1 sequestration, bioactive MBP fragments render LXRα function to counteract pronociceptive activity of estrogen/ESR1 in sensory neurons. This effect of …

Gut-microbiota modulation shows promise in improving immune-checkpoint blockade (ICB) response; however, precision biomarker-driven, placebo-controlled trials are lacking. We performed a multicenter, randomized placebo-controlled, biomarker-stratified phase I trial in patients with ICB-naïve metastatic melanoma using SER-401, an orally delivered Firmicutesenriched spore formulation. Fecal microbiota signatures were characterized at baseline; patients were stratified by high versus low Ruminococcaceae abundance prior to randomization to the SER-401 arm (oral vancomycin-preconditioning/SER-401 alone/nivolumab + SER-401), versus the placebo arm [placebo antibiotic/placebo microbiome modulation (PMM)/nivolumab + PMM (NCT03817125)]. Analysis of 14 accrued patients demonstrated that treatment with SER-401 + nivolumab was safe, with an overall response rate …

N-acetylasparate and lactate are two prominent brain metabolites closely related to mitochondrial functioning. Prior research revealing lower levels of NAA and higher levels of lactate in the cerebral cortex of patients with schizophrenia suggest possible abnormalities in the energy supply pathway necessary for brain function. Given that stress and adversity are a strong risk factor for a variety of mental health problems, including psychotic disorders, we investigated the hypothesis that stress contributes to abnormal neuroenergetics in patients with schizophrenia. To test this hypothesis, we used the Stress and Adversity Inventory (STRAIN) to comprehensively assess the lifetime stressor exposure profiles of …

Due to the NP-hard nature, the strategic airport slot scheduling problem is calling for exploring sub-optimal approaches, such as heuristics and learning-based approaches. Moreover, the continuous increase in air traffic demand requires approaches that can work well in new scenarios. While heuristics rely on a fixed set of rules, which limits the ability to explore new solutions, Reinforcement Learning offers a versatile framework to automate the search and generalize to unseen scenarios. Finding a suitable state observation and reward structure design is essential in using Reinforcement Learning. In this paper, we investigate the impact of providing the Reinforcement Learning agent …

Geochemical data from 2009-2023 for production wells in Shelby County, Tennessee, were analyzed to determine the origin of discrepancies in sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) results in relationship to other tracers and hydrogeologic characteristics of sampled wells. This study proposes three potential origins for the discrepancies: modern SF6 contamination introduced during sampling, contributions of terrigenic SF6 formation, and groundwater re-equilibration with modern air in the unsaturated zone. The results suggest contamination with modern air during sampling is significant in some settings. An airtight sampling method was developed and shown to be successful in reducing introduction of modern air during sampling. The results …

Maximizing the efficiency of testing for learning is an important educational goal (Schellekens et al., 2021). According to Portela et al. (2017), educational efficiency is achieved when learning and test results are generated with minimal resources and high efficacy. Traditionally in classrooms, feedback from tests is provided after a test is finished. However, research on the testing effect (Kang et al., 2007; Rowland, 2014) and studies on assessment during feedback (Chang & Li, 2019) suggest that educational efficiency can be enhanced by providing immediate feedback after each response. Our goal is to investigate whether immediate feedback during assessment affects the …

High-intensity drinking (HID; 8+/10+ drinks for women/men) is linked to higher BAC and negative alcohol-related consequences compared to heavy episodic drinking (HED; 4+/5+ drinks for women/men). This study used growth mixture modeling to identify HID trajectories, examined potential behavioral economic predictors (demand intensity, Omax, demand elasticity, and delayed reward discounting) of HID trajectory membership, and quantified associations between HID trajectories and alcohol-related outcomes (alcohol related consequences and life satisfaction). Participants were emerging adults from the community (N = 602; 42.7% male, 47.0% White, Black = 41.5%, Mage = 22.63) who reported recent heavy drinking at baseline. Assessments occurred every 4 …

This study investigated the Lone Oaks restoration site in Middleton, Tennessee, focusing on Cub Creek's channeling issues. Subsurface investigations revealed a shallow aquifer with limited groundwater storage, varying in thickness by about 2 m between upstream (U/S) and downstream (D/S) sections, and an unsaturated zone extending from 1.8 m U/S to 2.3 m D/S. The underlying confining layer is 6.5 m bgs U/S and 9 m bgs D/S, indicating eastward erosion or deposition shift between the Wilcox and Porters Creek Clay. Where U/S and D/S soil moisture at 90 cm and 150 cm remained near saturation during the cool season, …

Background: External radiation therapy (RT) is often a primary treatment for inoperable meningiomas in the absence of established chemotherapy. Histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) overexpression, commonly found in cancer, is acknowledged as a driver of cellular growth, and inhibiting HDACs holds promise in improving radiotherapeutic efficacy. Downregulation of HDAC6 facilitates the degradation of β-catenin. This protein is a key element in the Wnt/β-catenin signalling pathway, contributing to the progression of meningiomas. Methods: In order to elucidate the associations and therapeutic potential of HDAC6 inhibitors (HDAC6i) in conjunction with RT, we administered Cay10603, HDAC6i, to both immortalised and patient-derived meningioma cells prior …
