Examining The Physical Activity Experiences Of Blind And Visually Impaired Women, Lindsay E. Ball Jul 2024

Examining The Physical Activity Experiences Of Blind And Visually Impaired Women, Lindsay E. Ball

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Substantial research has indicated that blind and visually impaired adults often do not meet physical activity guidelines, and therefore, are not experiencing the numerous affordances of physical activity participation. However, those who report meeting physical activity guidelines express higher rates of health-related quality of life. Largely, the research examining the physical activity behaviors and perspectives of blind and visually impaired adults have been survey studies leaving a rich description of their physical activity experiences unexplored. The overall aim of this project was to engage with blind or visually impaired women to understand their experiences accessing and participating in physical activity, …

Measurement Of The Photoproduction Cross-Section Of F1(1285) In The Exclusive Reactions Γp → P′K∓KSΠ± At 7.5 < Eγ < 11.5 Gev With Gluex At Jefferson Lab, Tyler Viducic

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The f1(1285) meson is commonly understood to belong to the axial-vector nonet as the low-mass isoscalar partner to the f1(1420) but has been suggested as a candidate for a KK∗+c.c molecule. A nearly mass-degenerate 0 −+ state has been observed in πp scattering that calls into question the established branching ratios of the f1(1285) decays. Recently, the differential cross-section for the photoproduction of f1(1285) was measured by the CLAS experiment and the results disagreed with theoretical predictions. Additionally, the CLAS experiment did not observe a mass-degenerate 0−+ state. …

The Years Of Embers In Mauritania: Ethnicity And Narratives, Hawa Saidou Barane Ba Jul 2024

The Years Of Embers In Mauritania: Ethnicity And Narratives, Hawa Saidou Barane Ba

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The borders in Africa were drawn according to the interests of colonial powers and without consideration of the continent’s ethnic, cultural, and linguistic realities. Thus, roughly 80% of African countries borders were drawn without considering the crucial and pre-existing realities of pre-colonial African societies, splitting ethnically and culturally homogenous groups and grouping diverse others under the same political unit. (Beck, 1993; Lefebvre, 2011). Consequently, many African countries end up with an ethnically diverse population that faces the challenge of living harmoniously together in social cohesion, creating an environment prone to ethnic conflicts, political instabilities, and weak national identities. Mauritania, for …

The laboratory chose a flying wing model. Additionally, the aircraft would have an airbrake system integrated into the platform.

The aerodynamic requirements were configurated through the use of a ‘constraint diagram’. …

Sandbagging In Canadian Law And Practice, Camden Hutchison Jul 2024

Sandbagging In Canadian Law And Practice, Camden Hutchison

All Faculty Publications

In the language of mergers and acquisitions, “sandbagging” refers to situations in which a buyer brings an indemnification claim for a breach of the seller’s representations and warranties that the buyer was aware of prior to closing. In contractual negotiations, sellers often argue that sandbagging allows unscrupulous buyers to reduce the agreed-upon purchase price by abusing the indemnification mechanism. For their part, buyers argue that sandbagging can protect their legitimate contractual interests, particularly in cases where a seller seeks to dispute a valid indemnification claim. This tension between buyers and sellers is heightened by the fact that the legal status …

Civic Education And Democracy's Flaws, Robert L. Tsai Jul 2024

Civic Education And Democracy's Flaws, Robert L. Tsai

Faculty Scholarship

Today, liberalism and democracy are beset by competitors that seek to return power to religious traditionalists or partisans masquerading as civic republicans. In such an environment, can civic education do some good, and even help bridge our society’s deepening divides?

Seana Shiffrin has characteristically brought deep learning and penetrating insight to the project of civic education in a modern democracy. Against a “dominant” model of citizenship in which “citizens vote and hand off power to their representatives”— which she believes encourages the people to maintain an unhealthy distance from government— she proposes a richer account of political community in which …

Orthodontic Load Quantification Leveling A Deep Curve Of Spee With Different Archwire Designs, Ahmed Youssef

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Objective: This study aimed to quantify the effects of different materials, sizes of the continuous archwires in leveling the exaggerated curve of Spee. We used an orthodontic force tester apparatus to measure the forces and moments delivered by the archwires to the brackets attached to the sensors of one quadrant of the arch (from 1st incisor to 2nd molar). The hypothesis is that there is no difference in the load and moments between the incisors when the curve of Spee is leveled with the three different mechanical designs being tested. Methods: An orthodontic force tester (OFT) was used to measure …

BACKGROUND: The National Spinal Cord Injury Registry of Iran (NSCIR-IR) and the National Trauma Registry of Iran (NTRI) were established to meet the data needs for research and assessing trauma status in Iran. These registries have a group of patients shared by both registries, and it is expected that some identical data will be collected about them. A general question arises whether the spinal cord injury registry can receive part of the common data from the trauma registry and not collect them independently.

METHODS: We examined variables captured in both registries based on structure and concept, identified the overlapping period …

Context. Mid-infrared emission features are important probes of the properties of ionized gas and hot or warm molecular gas, which are difficult to probe at other wavelengths. The Orion Bar photodissociation region (PDR) is a bright, nearby, and frequently studied target containing large amounts of gas under these conditions. Under the “PDRs4All” Early Release Science Program for JWST, a part of the Orion Bar was observed with MIRI integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy, and these high-sensitivity IR spectroscopic images of very high angular resolution (0.2′′) provide a rich observational inventory of the mid-infrared (MIR) emission lines, while resolving the H …

Drosophila Nhe2 Overexpression Induces Autophagic Cell Death, Jobelle Peralta, Blake Dupriest, Daniel Orozco, Juan Reyna Pacheco, Laura Martins, Rachel Ann Soriano, Alan Wong, Ramy Wong, Bree Grillo-Hill

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Autophagy is a conserved catabolic process where double membrane-bound structures form around macromolecules or organelles targeted for degradation. Autophagosomes fuse with lysosomes to facilitate degradation and macromolecule recycling for homeostasis or growth in a cell autonomous manner. In cancer cells, autophagy is often up-regulated and helps cancer cells survive nutrient deprivation and stressful growth conditions. Here, we propose that the increased intracellular pH (pHi) common to cancer cells is sufficient to induce autophagic cell death. We previously developed tools to increase pHi in the Drosophila eye via overexpression of DNhe2, resulting in aberrant patterning and reduced tissue size. We examined …

Populism’S Influence On News Content: Polarization, Political Parallelism, And Journalistic Professionalism In Rafael Correa’S Ecuador, Manel Palos Pons

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

This article investigates how populism in power influenced news media in Ecuador during leftist president Rafael Correa’s presidency (2007–2017). Correa’s administration triggered a bold media reform in Ecuador challenging traditional media and promising media democratization, but his government received sharp denunciations from press freedom and media organizations which considered Ecuador as a “not free” country, especially after the passing of a Communication Law in 2013 that regulated media extensively. Through content analysis of news and opinion pieces published in 2005, 2006, 2015, 2016, and 2018 by Ecuador’s main legacy newspapers, El Comercio and El Universo, different legal and political contexts …

Geo-Slam: Using Geometric Hierarchies To Support Localization And Mapping In Forest Environments, Daniel Castellarin Jul 2024

Geo-Slam: Using Geometric Hierarchies To Support Localization And Mapping In Forest Environments, Daniel Castellarin

Theses

Robust mapping and localization can be challenging in environments like forests where easily observable landmarks are virtually indistinguishable from each other. In such environments, GPS or robot odometry may also be compromised by the landscape, tree cover, or method of locomotion. Prior work discussed a method for creating geometric hierarchies to describe the relative positions of unlabeled landmarks. Notably, the polygons from these hierarchies were used to perform accurate place recognition from observations containing partial overlap and sensor noise. Here, we use geometric hierarchies to perform robust data association for collections of virtually identical 2D landmarks in direct support of …

Digital Catharsis Or Harmful Exposure? A Thematic Analysis Of Self-Directed Violence Reddit Posts, Lindsay A. Lundeen, John R. Mccall, Amanda Sams Bradshaw, Erika L. Leblanc, Lizy Humphrey

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many feel uncomfortable discussing self-directed violence with individuals in their social circle, often leading to concerned posts on social media. Previous studies address self-harm, suicide, and nonsuicidal self-injury; however, minimal literature combines suicide and nonsuicidal self-injury to explore common themes representing self-directed violence. This study identified themes from suicide and self-harm subreddit communities, with themes common to each subreddit comprising themes of self-directed violence. Using 1,989 Reddit posts from suicide and self-harm communities, we employed an inductive thematic analysis to explore how users discussed self-directed violence within anonymous online communities. Ultimately, the impact of using Reddit for discussion of self-directed …

Patients with cirrhosis are prone to developing acute kidney injury (AKI), a complication associated with a markedly increased in-hospital morbidity and mortality, along with a risk of progression to chronic kidney disease. Whereas patients with cirrhosis are at increased risk of developing any phenotype of AKI, hepatorenal syndrome (HRS), a specific form of AKI (HRS-AKI) in patients with advanced cirrhosis and ascites, carries an especially high mortality risk. Early recognition of HRS-AKI is crucial since administration of splanchnic vasoconstrictors may reverse the AKI and serve as a bridge to liver transplantation, the only curative option. In 2023, a joint meeting …

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) results from compression of the neurovascular bundle in the thoracic outlet. Several etiologies can contribute to the development of thoracic outlet syndrome, including both congenital and acquired causes. Historically, trapezius pathology has not been considered a cause of TOS; however, here we report a patient with neurogenic TOS plus ipsilateral trapezius hypertonicity and hypertrophy who had significant symptomatic improvement following botulinum toxin injections to trapezius.
