Dock7 Is A Novel Modifier Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Pathology, Katherine English
Dock7 Is A Novel Modifier Of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Pathology, Katherine English
ETDs from 2020-2029
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive, x-linked neuromuscular disorder affecting 1/5000 male births every year. DMD results from mutations in DMD, a critical structural protein within the muscle. In the absence of Dystrophin, the muscle degrades, increasing inflammation, destabilizing the cell membrane and going through constant cycles of regeneration which depletes the stem cell population. Over time, muscle tissue is replaced by fibrosis and adipose tissue, leading to loss of ambulation, respiratory and cardiac failure leading to death by early 20s. The standard of care for DMD patients is corticosteroid treatment. However, gene therapies have recently emerged which present …
Middle School English Language Arts Teacher Perceptions About Literacy Self-Efficacy, Carrie Beth Buchanan
Middle School English Language Arts Teacher Perceptions About Literacy Self-Efficacy, Carrie Beth Buchanan
ETDs from 2020-2029
Historically, research has shown that teacher self-efficacy positively influences student achievement (Gibson & Dembo, 1984; Tschannen-Moran et al., 1998; Muijs & Reynolds, 2001). With the sudden shift to digital instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic and the changes in literacy practices and assessment, teachers have been required to implement new instructional strategies. Grounded in Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy theory, my research explored how mastery experiences and teacher mindsets influence student success in this changing environment. This study employed an exploratory sequential mixed-methods design to investigate the perceptions of current middle school English Language Arts (MS ELA) teachers about their literacy self-efficacy. Data …

Finite Element Analysis Of Post Vs Threaded-Post Glenoid Baseplates In Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: A Comparative Study, Christopher Morgan
ETDs from 2020-2029
This study compared a standard‑post baseplate with a threaded‑post baseplate in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) to determine whether threaded central fixation improves micromotion and stress distribution. A finite element model of a left scapula with a commercially available rTSA system was created; the two designs differed only by the central post (standard press‑fit versus threaded). A 756 N physiological load was applied at 60°, 90°, and 120° of abduction. Outcomes included total and directional relative micromotion at the bone–implant interface and von Mises stress in the glenoid and baseplate. Total micromotion remained below the 150 µm osseointegration threshold for …

Biology, Agriculture and Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Machine learning has become an increasingly important tool for overcoming agricultural challenges by enabling efficient and consistent classification of crop-related data. Training such supervised models requires high quality labeled datasets. This work presents a dataset consisting of raw and preprocessed hyperspectral imaging (HSI) files capturing reflectance in the visible to near-infrared range (400–1000 nm) from two problematic weed species on California’s Central Coast: annual sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) and little mallow (Malva parviflora). Hyperspectral imaging provides rich spectral-spatial data cubes that can support the development of deep learning models and autonomous technology for precision weed management. Plants …

Enhancing The Metacognitive Thinking Of Middle-Grade Multilingual Learners: A Design-Based Research Study Leveraging Dialogic Teaching, Renee R. Burns
Dissertations
This study explores how dialogic teaching can enhance metacognition and self-efficacy among middle school multilingual learners (MLs) who face challenges with the academic language demands of literacy tasks. Using a design-based research (DBR) methodology, specifically formative experiment, the Metacognitive Dialogic Teaching Protocol (MDTP) was implemented over seven iterative cycles. The research questions were as follows: How do dialogic interactions impact metacognition in middle-grade MLs? How does Metacognitive Dialogic Teaching affect comprehension development in these students? And how does it influence their self-efficacy? The participants included six middle-grade MLs engaged in a Tier 2 literacy intervention who initially exhibited fake reading …
Thermodynamic Modeling Of Ph Impacts On Subsurface Microbial Consortia, Jackfin K C
Thermodynamic Modeling Of Ph Impacts On Subsurface Microbial Consortia, Jackfin K C
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Underground hydrogen storage is affected by microbial consumption, and the different minerals present in the subsurface. However, most studies consider either biotic or abiotic factors in isolation and hence, the conditions that drive a self-sustaining storage remain poorly understood. This thesis uses a genome-informed thermodynamic model developed by Kharel et al. (2026) in which pH is the central variable coupling hydrogenotrophic microbial metabolism, inter-species competition, and carbonate mineral buffering. The model includes four hydrogen-consuming species: methanogen (Methanobacterium), acetogen (Acetoanaerobium), aerobic acetate oxidizer (Pseudomonas stutzeri), and sulfate reducer (Nitratidesulfovibrio) by conditioning each organism's …

Grapho 2026, Simon Niemtschk
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
Grapho’s theme this year, “One Body in Christ”, encourages us to meditate on the ways our faith unites. By our Lord’s sacrifice, all believers are bound together with the resurrected body of Christ. Inspired by the great love God shared with the church as seen in Paul’s letters (Romans 12:4-5; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13), we are freed from sin, death and the power of the devil, and empowered to a life together. Our theme this year invites Christians to consider how our unity is found scripturally, sacramentally, and liturgically.

Sisters Separated: The Past, Present, And Future Of The Relationship Between The Lcms And Wels, Peter Ross
Grapho : Concordia Seminary Student Journal
There are two prominent confessional Lutheran synods in the United States, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Yet these two groups are not in altar and pulpit fellowship. It often comes as a surprise to many younger members of Missouri Synod congregations that there was a time when the two synods were in altar and pulpit fellowship. As time has gone on however, there seems to be a general warming in the relationship between the two synods. In light of this warming relationship, it is good to look at the past relationship of the two synods, …

Gender Relations Within 18th And 19th Century Art And How It Affects A 21st Century Learner, Sophie Lima
Theses
This study constructs a curriculum unit comprising five lessons in feminist art history for middle school learners in 5th-8th grade. Drawing on theories and concepts from feminist art history, visual culture, and inquiry in art education, this curriculum aims to address the scarcity of age-appropriate materials in feminist art history. There is a need for curricular materials that help learners critically analyze issues of gender, identity, and power conveyed through visual culture. The curriculum encourages middle-grade students to engage with three approaches to art analysis: formalism, iconography, and feminism. The organized unit focuses on inquiry, interpretation, comparison, production, and evaluation. …

Compressor Rotor Joints And Interference Fit Study, Isabela Jimenez, Aubrey Perez, Isaiah Guerrero, Jireh Velasquez
Mechanical Engineering
Solar Turbines need a comprehensive study on the effects axial and radial inference fits have on turbine compressor rotor stiffness. The aft weldment of the compressor has press-fit dowel pins and pilot joints to connect one weldment section to another. These fits need to be assessed through a finite element modal analysis, as well as practically tested through modal impacts to investigate how the fits affect the stiffness of the turbine’s connected weldments. The experimental data will be used to validate the finite element analysis (FEA) model.

Forged Carbon Fiber Adventure Project, Timothy Villafana, Victor Javadoff, Nathan Pittiglio, Cooper Starr
Mechanical Engineering
Forged carbon fiber compression molding remains a relatively under-researched manufacturing process. While there are documented processes online, the options are few and far between. Our sponsor and case-study user, Dr. Mello, tasked us with the goal of researching and developing a process for forged carbon fiber compression molding through means of modifying his prototype of a bike pack handlebar cradle (figure 3). This prototype will allow us to create tooling which will be used to manufacture a handlebar cradle that can withstand larger loads and more extreme environments using our developed process. A handlebar cradle is a structural support for …

Xylem: A Comparative Analysis Of Gpu Dispatch Pipelines For Large-Scale, Procedural Environments, Srinivas Sundararaman
Xylem: A Comparative Analysis Of Gpu Dispatch Pipelines For Large-Scale, Procedural Environments, Srinivas Sundararaman
Master's Theses
The real-time rendering of large-scale, procedural scenes presents a significant performance challenge for traditional CPU-bound rendering pipelines. The high volume of draw calls and the need for complex culling and level-of-detail management create bottlenecks that limit scene complexity and visual fidelity. This thesis investigates the evolution of GPU-driven rendering paradigms via the Xylem renderer within NVIDIA’s Donut rendering framework as a solution to these challenges.
A comprehensive benchmarking framework is developed to implement and quantitatively analyze three distinct rendering strategies for a procedurally generated, parameterizable, large-scale forest scene. The evaluated pipelines include: (1) traditional instanced rendering, (2) compute-driven indirect rendering …

Solving Linearly Constrained Quadratic Programs Using Field Programmable Analog Arrays, Tyler Wynn, Alonzo Arroyo
Solving Linearly Constrained Quadratic Programs Using Field Programmable Analog Arrays, Tyler Wynn, Alonzo Arroyo
Electrical Engineering
This paper presents a field-programmable analog array (FPAA) implementation for solving linearly constrained quadratic programs (LCQPs) directly in the analog domain. The solver is based on a continuous-time primal-dual control architecture with integral action, anti-windup compensation, and a piecewise-linear nonlinearity for enforcing affine inequality constraints. A switched-capacitor implementation using three AN231E04 FPAAs is developed, and coefficient scaling methods are introduced to keep internal and output signals within the voltage limits of the hardware. A global scaling factor is used to reduce internal signal excursions, while solution-space scaling is shown to modify the implemented optimization coefficients and alter the local closed-loop …

Mandatory Minimum Sentences After R V Hill: A Different Way Of “Treating” Reasonably Foreseeable Offenders, Colton Fehr
Mandatory Minimum Sentences After R V Hill: A Different Way Of “Treating” Reasonably Foreseeable Offenders, Colton Fehr
Dalhousie Law Journal
The Supreme Court of Canada was initially reluctant to strike down minimum sentences for inconsistency with the prohibition against “cruel and unusual treatment or punishment” found in section 12 of the Charter. The Court’s more recent jurisprudence incorporating the experiences of equality-seeking groups and vulnerable offenders played a key role in reversing course. It is principled to take into account the experiences of minority groups to the extent they are capable of illustrating an offender’s reduced moral blameworthiness. The inevitable criticism that this approach unduly expands judicial review is nevertheless more convincingly rebutted by observing that equality plays a …

Worsened Multitasking Performance With Simulated Hearing Protection Correlates With Individuals' Choice Not To "Wear" It., Matthew G. Wisniewski, Patricia Mcclain, Chelsea N. Joyner
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
INTRODUCTION: Workers' reasons for not wearing hearing protection devices (HPDs) largely come from performance issues that occur while wearing. Research has shown that such complaints are justified in regard to auditory situational awareness (e.g., speech comprehension), but other aspects of work performance (e.g., multitasking ability) are rarely characterized. Further, the relationship between HPD-related performance worsening and the choice to wear an HPD has not been objectively characterized. We address both gaps in the literature here.
METHODS: Participants were presented with moving objects on a computer screen and tasked to track a "target" object by hovering a cursor over it. Target …
