“From Remembering To Shaping”: Narrating Shared Experiences By Co-Designing Cultural Heritage Artifacts In Collaborative Vr, Yushang Yang, Fanxu Meng, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, L. C. Ray

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The ways people remember and recall places reveal an invisible aspect of cultural heritage (CH), reflecting how individuals and communities relate to these places. Heritage is communal, emerging through collaboratively constructed narratives rather than individual records. To probe how people may share collective memories, we designed an immersive two-person workflow for collaboratively co-designing 3D artifacts and environments in virtual heritage locations, using Generative AI (GenAI) to instantiate these intangible memories. Observations of the co-creation process revealed that participants merged prompts and model placements when negotiating different perspectives. They used spatial operations to compose scenes, and also to express personal and …

“Megadeal” Subsidies, Local Spillovers And Corporate Innovation, Yoojin Lee, Shaphan Ng, Aruhn Venkat Jun 2026

“Megadeal” Subsidies, Local Spillovers And Corporate Innovation, Yoojin Lee, Shaphan Ng, Aruhn Venkat

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine whether the largest place-based, firm-specific corporate subsidies (“Megadeals”) awarded by state and local governments affect local firms’ innovation. First, we document that 1) subsidy firms innovate in the subsidized county and 2) subsidy firms bring inventors from other counties into the subsidized county, consistent with subsidy firms generating new knowledge locally. In our main test, we use a stacked cohort design with stringent fixed effects to document that local firms increase patenting following a Megadeal. Cross-sectionally, effects are increasing 1) in subsidy firm innovativeness, 2) in the technological closeness of subsidy firms and local firms, 3) when subsidy …

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) report and national and international guidelines have shifted away from short-acting beta2-agonist (SABA)-only bronchodilators as first-line asthma rescue therapy, recognizing that both bronchoconstriction and inflammation underlie the increase in symptoms preceding an exacerbation. Instead, the GINA Committee supports strategies to reduce inflammation, such as anti-inflammatory reliever (AIR) therapy (as-needed, low-dose inhaled corticosteroid [ICS]–formoterol or SABA–ICS for symptom relief) and single maintenance and reliever therapy (SMART) or maintenance and reliever therapy (MART; i.e., ICS–formoterol used as both maintenance and as-needed rescue therapy). This narrative review discusses the rationale behind the move toward AIR and SMART …

INTRODUCTION: Nephrotic syndrome (NS), a common glomerular disease in children, is classified based on response to corticosteroid therapy as either steroid-sensitive nephrotic syndrome (SSNS), or steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). However, there are no current reliable predictors of therapy response at initial clinical presentation.

METHODS: To evaluate predictors, we conducted genome-wide association studies, developed polygenic risk scores (PRS) for therapy response and analyzed classical HLA alleles in 1,997 children (994 discovery and 1,003 replication/validation cohorts) previously unstudied children with NS and 3,558 ancestry-matched control individuals.

RESULTS: A significant association with HLA loci defined by variants in HLA-DQB1, HLA-DRB1, and HLA-DQA1 were …

Variants in TPMT and NUDT15 genes that affect thiopurine metabolism can guide personalized dosing to minimize toxicity. Decreased or no appreciable NUDT15 activity demonstrates impaired breakdown of active thiopurine metabolites which can lead to severe adverse events including potentially life-threatening myelosuppression. Recently, the NUDT15*6 allele was re-classified from having uncertain function to no function by the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium. Here, we present a pediatric patient with a NUDT15*1/*6 genotype who experienced significant thiopurine-induced myelosuppression. The patient is a 4-year-old female with standard risk-average precursor B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated per AALL1731. Exome sequencing determined TPMT*1/*1 (normal metabolizer) and NUDT15*1/*6 …

The Effect Of Bai1 Deficiency On Cell Survival During The Critical Period Of Retinal Development, Nicholas Mirmanesh Jun 2026

The Effect Of Bai1 Deficiency On Cell Survival During The Critical Period Of Retinal Development, Nicholas Mirmanesh

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

The postnatal retina undergoes further development during the critical period, during which excess neurons are culled, and synapses are refined to shape the mature retinal circuitry. Brain-specific angiogenesis inhibitor-1 (BAI1) has been implicated in synaptic development, phagocytosis, the regulation of angiogenesis, and inflammatory signaling, suggesting it may play an important role in retinal maturation. The goal of this project was to determine how BAI1 deficiency affects retinal cell survival and layer morphology during the critical period. Mice were divided into three genotype groups: BAI1 +/+ Wild Type (WT), +/- (Het), and -/- (KO). Apoptotic cells were quantified using TUNEL staining …

Disclosure Duties And Responsibilities, Gregory Klass Jun 2026

Disclosure Duties And Responsibilities, Gregory Klass

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Contract disclosure rules differ in structure, function, and design. Though scholars often treat all these rules under the rubric of duty, in fact they fall into two broad categories. Disclosure duties treat the failure to disclose as a legal wrong; disclosure responsibilities attach positive legal consequences to disclosure but do not treat nondisclosure as a legal wrong. Disclosure duties can be further divided. Specified disclosure duties, which typically apply to consumer and other mass-market transactions, provide detailed guidance regarding both what information to disclose and how to disclose it. Generic disclosure duties, such as the tort of nondisclosure, provide broad …

Mapping The Tar Vrna Interaction With Hiv-1 Integrase, Jian Sun, Rahul Yadav, Tolga Catmakas, Luke Fisher, Nicholas C. Fitzkee, Jacques J. Kessl

Faculty Publications

A series of critical interactions within the viral core between viral RNA (vRNA) and HIV-1 Integrase (IN) has previously been reported. In these studies, contact points between vRNA and IN were identified using RNA-seq and MS-based protein foot-printing approaches. Several IN amino acids located in its C-terminal domain (CTD) were found to be essential for vRNA binding, and their alanine substitution severely impacted the correct morphogenesis of the mature viral core. Here, we have used the TAR element to extend these studies by performing a comprehensive mapping of the interaction by deploying RNA crosslinking and NMR methodologies. Together, these approaches …

Missed Clinic Appointments For Human Papillomavirus-Related Oropharyngeal Cancer, John M. Vieth, Anthony A. Mangino, Melina J. Windon, Joseph Valentino

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Background: Missing appointments delay treatment affecting patient outcomes and healthcare resource utilization. Adherence to scheduled appointments has not been studied in patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV-OPSCC). Methods: We collected data from 36,690,000 scheduled medical outpatient encounters at the University of Kentucky Health Care from 2012 to 2021. A total of 36,579 of these encounters were from 334 patients with HPV-OPSCC. We performed regression analysis of no-show appointments by demographics, tumor characteristics, and insurance factors. Results: The no-shows rate for appointments was significantly higher for the HPV-OPSCC cohort (4.6% vs. 2.2% p < 0.001). The HPV-OPSCC cohort missed 36% of their appointments. Black, Hispanic, younger, those who have ever smoked and patients with advanced tumor stage all had statistically significantly higher no-show rates (p < 0.01). Conclusions: Treatment delay impacts cancer treatment efficacy and no-show appointments burden medical systems. Further research into targeted interventions is needed to lower barriers for attending appointments.

Equitable Decompositions: A Gateway To Spectral Theory Through Graph Automorphisms, Daniel Ford Jun 2026

Equitable Decompositions: A Gateway To Spectral Theory Through Graph Automorphisms, Daniel Ford

Master's Theses

Graphs with symmetry appear throughout mathematics and its applications, from the structure of molecules and network design to combinatorial game theory. A central question in spectral graph theory is how to compute or characterise the eigenvalues of the matrices associated with such graphs. Classical decomposition methods, such as diagonalisation or Jordan normal form, accomplish this but only once some spectral information is already known. A different approach, introduced by Barrett et al. (2015), uses the automorphisms of a graph to block-diagonalise its adjacency matrix without any prior spectral information. Because one of the resulting summands is always the quotient matrix …

Effects Of Atmospheric Drag On Angles-Only Initial Relative Orbit Determination Accuracy In Low Earth Orbit, Sydney Walsh Jun 2026

Effects Of Atmospheric Drag On Angles-Only Initial Relative Orbit Determination Accuracy In Low Earth Orbit, Sydney Walsh

Master's Theses

Growing congestion in low Earth orbit is increasing the demand for effective space situational awareness, straining ground station capabilities. Space-based relative orbit determination offers an alternative, using line-of-sight angle measurements from a chaser spacecraft to estimate a target spacecraft's orbit. This research focuses on angles-only initial relative orbit determination (IROD), where no prior target state knowledge is assumed. It investigates how IROD solution accuracy is affected by differential atmospheric drag between the chaser and target spacecraft. A nonlinear batch least squares filter is designed to estimate the target's initial state, which is compared against a truth solution. It was found …

Determining K Clusters In K-Means Clustering With The Crab Algorithm, Jasmine Kristine S. Cabrera Jun 2026

Determining K Clusters In K-Means Clustering With The Crab Algorithm, Jasmine Kristine S. Cabrera

Master's Theses

Unsupervised clustering often faces the challenge of determining the correct number of clusters in the absence of a true target variable. Traditional methods such as the Elbow Method and the Silhouette Score can produce ambiguous results and rely on assumptions about cluster shape or separation. To address this, we created the Clustering Rivals and Buddies (CRAB) algorithm which evaluates clusters based on stability across multiple subsamples. CRAB uses pairwise classifications to identify points that consistently group together called “Buddies” and points that remain separated called “Rivals.” Applied with K-means, CRAB accurately recovers underlying cluster structures in both spherical and non-spherical …
