The Effects Of Stress On Attentional Networks, Alice Tsvinev Nov 2024

The Effects Of Stress On Attentional Networks, Alice Tsvinev

Master's Theses

The human brain has developed mechanisms to aid our survival, including attentional networks and stress response. Attentional shifts allow humans to react accordingly to their environment, following innate processes like fight or flight. Prolonged exposure to acute stress interferes with such cognitive processes as attention and working memory, impacting attentional systems. The present study examined the effects of acute stress on visual attention processes, specifically focusing on the orienting, alerting, and executive attention networks. 49 participants were randomly placed in either a stress or non-stress condition, then asked to reflect on either stressful or positive moments in their lives, respectively. …

African American Male Overidentification In Special Education Services: Teacher Perspectives On The Referral Process, Amanda Gray

Student Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative narrative study explored the perceptions of public-school general education teachers on the training they received for referring students to special education. Two key aspects of this were investigated: (1) navigating the special education referral process, and (2) using individualized interventions that are effective with African American male students. The problem addressed in this study is the overidentification of African American male students in special education. This causes concern in the educational community, as students misidentified often suffer unintended consequences such as segregated learning environments, low expectations, and fewer post-secondary opportunities. Using social inequality theory as a theoretical framework, …

Longitudinal Pedestrian Safety Trends By Vehicle Type And Model: A 2015-2022 Study Of Texas, Olivia Tafoya

Civil Engineering ETDs

We observed pickup trucks, SUVs, and passenger cars and their two most popular vehicle models across Texas from 2015 through 2022. For each vehicle type and model, we obtained all reported pedestrian crashes, counts of registered vehicles, and vehicle design characteristics. Results suggest that older vehicles are more likely to seriously injure or kill a pedestrian than newer ones. They also indicate that SUVs were more deadly, after controlling for exposure using the number of registered vehicles, than other vehicle types. Of the models studied, the full-size SUVs proved to be particularly dangerous for pedestrians, being 2.08 times more likely …

A Novel Reinforcement Learning Method For Efficient Cross-Training Between Real And Simulated Robots, Zhonglin Liang

Master's Theses

Training reinforcement learning policy in a simulated environment can be a go-to choice for many research topics, as a simulated environment provides flexibility and costs less than building a physical environment for training. However, policy trained in a simulated environment often fails to transfer to the real environment for problems that have a more complex dynamics. As the solution, Sim2Real was proposed and it categorizes techniques that improve the performance of the transfer from simulation to reality. Sim2Real is an area of study that focuses on utilizing simulation data to train models that can apply to real world environment. It …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The increasing complexity of enzyme catalysis requires precise and reproducible computational models to understand reaction mechanisms and support advances in drug design and protein engineering. This dissertation focuses on the advancement of enzyme modeling techniques, particularly in cytochrome P450 and hydrogenase enzymes, through the development of the Residue Interaction Network Residue Selector (RINRUS), an automated toolkit that addresses a critical gap in the reproducibility of quantum mechanics (QM)-cluster models. The RINRUS toolkit automates the systematic selection of catalytically relevant residues for QM-cluster model construction by leveraging residue interaction networks (RINs). By integrating the Probe and Arpeggio tools, RINRUS enhances model …

The Evaluation Of Health Recommender Systems: A Scoping Review, Rohit Shankar Nov 2024

The Evaluation Of Health Recommender Systems: A Scoping Review, Rohit Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

Background: People often look online for information about health concerns, but the vast amount of available and unregulated content can cause misinformation and potential harm. Health recommender systems (HRSs) can address this issue by recommending personalised health information. Previous research has evaluated individual systems, but there is a lack of reviews synthesising their evaluation findings. Such a synthesis is needed to ensure that future recommender designs have a positive impact on target health or behavioural outcomes. Objective: This review aimed to provide a summary of the evidence obtained from previous studies evaluating HRSs and highlight methodological considerations and gaps in …

All Decisions

In this holdover proceeding based on a 90-day notice of termination, the tenant challenged the landlord's claim that the building was not rent-stabilized. The tenant argued that the building was de facto rent-stabilized and part of a horizontal multiple dwelling with the neighboring building. The court granted the tenant's motion for discovery and denied the landlord's cross-motion for summary judgment. The court found that the tenant had raised valid defenses of de facto rent stabilization and horizontal multiple dwelling and that the landlord had not adequately rebutted these claims.

Swim Bladder Morphology Influences The Responses Of Nearshore Rockfishes To Barotrauma, Molly K. Alvino Nov 2024

Swim Bladder Morphology Influences The Responses Of Nearshore Rockfishes To Barotrauma, Molly K. Alvino

Master's Theses

Rockfishes (Sebastes spp.) are ecologically and economically important fishes in the continental shelf and slope regions of the Eastern Pacific Ocean. All species within the Sebastes genus have a buoyancy organ, the swim bladder, which is sensitive to rapid changes in pressure that occur when fish are caught and brought up to the surface. Although all rockfishes have swim bladders, pressure-related injuries (barotrauma) affect rockfish species differently. I determined whether swim bladder morphology can explain differences in barotrauma among semi-pelagic (Blue and Olive rockfish) and benthic (Gopher and Vermilion rockfish) species that occupy different habitat zones. Seven different swim bladder …

Creatine And Depression In Rodents: A Meta-Analysis, Ruchika S. Tirupachur Nov 2024

Creatine And Depression In Rodents: A Meta-Analysis, Ruchika S. Tirupachur

Master's Theses

Traditional treatments for major depression are based on the monoamine deficiency hypothesis, and they fail to achieve remission in a substantial portion of patients. Newer evidence suggests the pathophysiology of depression is a more complex story, highlighting a need for research in alternative therapies. Mounting evidence shows a linkage between depression and the supplement creatine monohydrate (CRMH). Research in rodent models suggests that CRMH may both alleviate depressive symptoms and enhance the efficacy of standard antidepressants like SSRIs. The following study describes findings from a combined fixed- and random-effects meta-analysis based on four empirical studies investigating the effect of CRMH …

Best Practices For The Naming Of Species, Luis A. Ruedas, Ryan W. Norris, Robert M. Timm Nov 2024

Best Practices For The Naming Of Species, Luis A. Ruedas, Ryan W. Norris, Robert M. Timm

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The process of describing a species has evolved considerably since the modern age of taxonomy was initiated with the publication of the 10th edition of Linnaeus’ Systema Naturæ in 1758. Nevertheless, the basic unit of the taxonomic framework remains the species group (species and subspecies). As a result, it is incumbent upon individuals undertaking species-group descriptions to strive for the highest standards, just as it is for reviewers and editors to hold authors to those same standards. The clear and mounting biodiversity crisis, the increasing proliferation of journals, the multiplication of journals publishing only in electronic format, the decline in …

Sustainable Mobility: Machine Learning-Driven Deployment Of Ev Charging Points In Dublin, Ruairí De Fréin, Alexander Mutiso Mutua Mr

Articles

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in urban areas face range anxiety due to the fear of running out of charge without timely access to charging points (CPs). The lack of sufficient numbers of CPs has hindered EV adoption and negatively impacted the progress of sustainable mobility. We propose a CP distribution algorithm that is machine learning-based and leverages population density, points of interest (POIs), and the most used roads as input parameters to determine the best locations for deploying CPs. The objects of the following research are as follows: (1) to allocate weights to the three parameters in a $6$ km …
