The Identification Of Ancient Wine Through Organic Residue Analysis Of Ceramic Vessels, Ayala Amir

'Atiqot

Wine was a primary commodity in antiquity and prevalent in the Southern Levant Mediterranean-basin regions and Mesopotamia. Therefore, its identification in archaeological artifacts by chemical analysis is of great importance. Many studies of wine residues were conducted on pottery from Mediterranean and Near Eastern sites, using a wide range of approaches to extract and detect organic compounds. This article will evaluate and compare these methods and raise consequent considerations for the interpretation of results to arrive at a historic picture.

Wine Production In The Byzantine Winepresses Of Southern Israel: Insights From A Statistical Analysis, Matan Chocron, Oren Ackermann, Ilan Stavi, Boaz Zissu

'Atiqot

This paper focuses on various technological aspects of Byzantine winepresses. The Byzantine period presents a unique point in time when the increased demand for wine from the Southern Levant is attested by the introduction of new elements in the architecture and design of the winepress. Whereas past studies have stressed the importance of the introduction of the screw-press, it is shown here that this is but one of numerous features that helped increase the yield. Other elements, such as the addition of a second collecting vat and the integration of fermentation cells contributed significantly to local wine production in the …

Energy Intensity And Structural Changes: Does Offshoring Matter?, Claudia Amadei, Cesare Dosi, Francesco Jacopo Pintus Nov 2024

Energy Intensity And Structural Changes: Does Offshoring Matter?, Claudia Amadei, Cesare Dosi, Francesco Jacopo Pintus

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The decoupling of energy-related carbon emissions from economic growth has been mostly driven by reductions of the energy intensity of GDP, which can be attributed either to changes in countries’ economic structure or within-sector energy-efficiency improvements. One question is whether observed reductions in energy intensity may stem from shifts to less energy-intensive sectors without equivalent changes in consumption patterns, raising uncertainty on their true impact on global decarbonization. This paper aims to empirically investigate this mechanism in a panel of 15 OECD countries. First, using an Index Decomposition Analysis (IDA) including an offshoring factor, we show that structural changes in …

Political Functions Of Slovene National Mythological Heroes With Regard To The Changing Socio-Political Circumstances And Needs, Polona Tratnik Nov 2024

Political Functions Of Slovene National Mythological Heroes With Regard To The Changing Socio-Political Circumstances And Needs, Polona Tratnik

Narrative Culture

This article explores how the motif of an ordinary man who confronts a powerful antagonist endangering the community has been used to help achieve national political goals. In 1858, Slovenian writer Fran Levstik wrote the tale of Martin Krpan, a mighty hero who saves the Empire. The character was inspired by the folktale hero Peter Klepec, as well as the medieval knight Gašper Lambergar who saved the Holy Roman Emperor. In the twentieth century, writers retold the tale of Peter Klepec at significant historical moments—on the eve of the breakup of the Habsburg Empire and before and after World War …

Characterization Of Non-Gaussianity In The Snow Distributions Of Various Landscapes, Noriaki Ohara, Andrew D. Parsekian, Benjamin M. Jones, Rodrigo C. Rangel, Kenneth M Hinkel, Rui A.P. Perdigão Nov 2024

Characterization Of Non-Gaussianity In The Snow Distributions Of Various Landscapes, Noriaki Ohara, Andrew D. Parsekian, Benjamin M. Jones, Rodrigo C. Rangel, Kenneth M Hinkel, Rui A.P. Perdigão

Michigan Tech Publications

Seasonal snowpack is an important predictor of the water resources available in the following spring and early-summer melt season. Total basin snow water equivalent (SWE) estimation usually requires a form of statistical analysis that is implicitly built upon the Gaussian framework. However, it is important to characterize the non-Gaussian properties of snow distribution for accurate large-scale SWE estimation based on remotely sensed or sparse ground-based observations. This study quantified non-Gaussianity using sample negentropy; the Kullback-Leibler divergence from the Gaussian distribution for field-observed snow depth data from the North Slope, Alaska; and three representative SWE distributions in the western USA from …

Interactive Educational Program For Purposeful Leader Rounding, Gina Lupi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This education project was to introduce nurse managers to the evidence-based practice of daily purposeful leader rounding on all staff in this acute care facility. The need for practice change was evidenced by low all employee survey and the Survey of Healthcare Experience of Patients (SHEP) results; low retention rates throughout the inpatients units; and an increase of patient safety events in fiscal year 2023. Leadership rounding is an evidence-based practice that increases staff retention by supporting and engaging staff. The purpose of the interactive education was to increase the knowledge and self-confidence of the participants to assist in hardwiring …

Some Free Boundary Problem Arising In Rock Mechanics, Anvarbek Meirmanov, Koblandy Yerzhanov

Turkish Journal of Mathematics

An initial boundary value problem for the in-situ leaching of rare metals with the acid solution in the elastic skeleton is considered. First, we describe physical processes at the microscopic level with a dimensional pore size [[EQUATION]]1 by the model [[EQUATION]], where dynamics of the incompressible solid skeleton is described by the Lamé equations and the physical process in the pore space by the Stokes equations for the incompressible fluid in combination with the diffusion and transport equations for the concentration of acid and product of chemical reactions. Since the solid skeleton changes its geometry upon dissolution, the “pore space …

Healthy aging can be defined as maintaining functional ability that promotes overall wellbeing as one ages. Adequate levels of physical activity in older adulthood are associated with many positive health outcomes which support healthy aging; however, most older adults do not meet the current physical activity recommendations associated with healthy aging. Generally, inadequate physical activity is associated with a variety of health risk factors including overweight and obesity, cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer. Although older adults share these same risk factors for inadequate levels of physical activity as adults, there are additional risk factors that …

Cactus Infused Beads For Off-Flavor Mitigation In Aquaculture Systems, Rama Mahita Kambhampati Nov 2024

Cactus Infused Beads For Off-Flavor Mitigation In Aquaculture Systems, Rama Mahita Kambhampati

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Aquaculture has become a vital component of global food production, now providing 50% of the world's fish supply. However, the industry encounters major challenges due to off-flavor compounds like Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborneol (MIB), which give fish an unpleasant earthy or musty smell. These compounds are detectable by humans at extremely low levels 0.7 parts per billion (ppb) for MIB and ten parts per trillion (ppt) for Geosmin—making them a persistent problem. Their presence not only reduces the sensory quality of aquaculture products but also results in significant economic losses, with U.S. catfish production incurring an additional $15–$23 million annually due …

Exploring Community Adaptation To Public Safety Power Shutoff Events: Findings From Two Case Studies Of Unincorporated Mountain Communities In Southern California, Ramiro M. Brown

Master's Theses

As aging electrical infrastructure in the US continues to succumb to unyielding weather patterns brought on by climate change, there is an urgency among Investor-Owned Utilities (IOUs) to reduce the likelihood of their equipment sparking a wildfire. Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) – the intentional de-energization of the electrical grid on high fire weather danger days – have become a staple in IOU Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMPs) since 2018 as one way to avoid wildfire ignitions via electrical infrastructure. One criticism of PSPS events is that they create their own hazard by cutting off power to thousands – sometimes millions-of …
