Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comment Geography Education: The Road Ahead, Daniel P. Donaldson
The Geographical Bulletin
More than a decade ago, Geography in America (Gaile and Willmontt, 1989) was released. Among the updates and discussions of geography's systematic subfields, was a chapter assessing the past, present, and future of geography education (Hill and LaPrairie, 1989). That work outlined the progression of geography's place of relative prominence in the early 1900s, to its virtual disappearance in American K-12 education. While the authors pointed to a plethora of challenges, they also noted that geography education was showing signs of new life. Indeed, geography has begun to show up in more and more school classrooms, and geographic literacy has …

Fertilizer Policies For Grassland Production In Winter Cold High Country In The South Island New Zealand And Southern China, C C. Boswell, M.J S. Floate
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Fertiliser policies for legume-based pastures on the high plateau of Guizhou province southern China are compared with those for the South Island of New Zealand, Guizhou policy is reduced to a few essentials. Choice of fertiliser is restricted; severe phosphorus deficiency is corrected with locally manufactured fused calcium magnesium phosphate, potassium deficiency with imported potassium sulphate or chloride. A simple recommendation applies for establishment and maintaining production over vast areas and potentially to huge numbers of small farms (3-7 ha). In the South Island high country, fertiliser forms and rates are matched as far as possible to the variety of …

Winter Cold Temperate Rangelands: Improvement Strategies For Intensive Rangeland Ecosystems, B E. Allan, D Scott
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Transfer of developed grassland technologies to rangelands is discussed in terms of environmental gradients and the options and constraints they impose. Winier feed limitation can be overcome through conserved feeds and various in situ systems involving special purpose pastures and feed banks. General animal nutrition can be improved through intensive development, low input systems, better control of range utilisation and, where appropriate, correction of mineral deficiencies. The emphasis in seeking quick and easy solutions to rangeland management problems is questioned, A more informed, environmentally sound and sustainable approach to rangeland fanning atlitudes and management is proposed. A stepwise process to …
Analysis Of The Integration Of Race And Cultural Concordant Doulas Into The Birth Experience Of African American Women, Cherissa Garcia
Analysis Of The Integration Of Race And Cultural Concordant Doulas Into The Birth Experience Of African American Women, Cherissa Garcia
Best Integrated Writing
Garcia's study looks at how integrating race and cultural-concordant doulas into the birth experience of African American women would impact outcomes. She found similar studies that provided strong evidence to support doula integration. However, most did not select study populations that appropriately reflected the African American women at increased risk of poor outcomes. As a result, Garcia designed a study that looked at race and cultural concordance between doulas and patients from a wide range of SES backgrounds and varying degrees of pregnancy risk.

The Lived Experiences Of Nurses Caring For Dying Pediatric Patients, Danna L. Curcio
Dissertations
The purpose of this research study was to explore the lived experiences of nurses caring for dying pediatric patients. Nurses and health care professionals may at times have difficulty adjusting and processing when life ends and this may have the potential to interfere with patient care. Reflection on past events and actions enable critical discovery of strategies to benefit both nurses and patients. The method for conducting this research study was from a qualitative phenomenological perspective exploring the lived experiences of nurses caring for dying pediatric patients. The philosophical underpinning of Merleau-Ponty (2008), in combination with the research method of …

A Qualitative Exploration Of Associate Degree Nurse Educators' Teaching Experiences Regarding Health Literacy, Connie Marshall
A Qualitative Exploration Of Associate Degree Nurse Educators' Teaching Experiences Regarding Health Literacy, Connie Marshall
Dissertations
Worldwide health literacy levels are low. Nurses should be able to lead the improvement of the health literacy of the populations they serve. During a comprehensive review of the literature, it became apparent that previous research regarding the provision of health literacy education within Associate Degree Nursing programs was not available. The Associate Degree is the initial degree that allows the graduate to take the NCLEX-RN board exam, so it was interesting to determine how learners are prepared to discern the health literacy levels of the patient population. The research question, "How do nurse educators describe their experiences with health …

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference
Background
At Aurora Oshkosh Emergency Department, the nurses, paramedics, and technicians were not consistently disinfecting needleless connectors before blood draws or intravenous medications, increasing the risks of postinsertion catheter-related infections.
Local Problem
In a pre-audit, disinfection of needleless connectors prior to access occurred 40% of the time, failing to meet the Aurora Oshkosh Emergency Department goal of 80%. A knowledge gap was discovered through interviews when only 23% of staff could verbalize the system’s intravenous access policy correctly on disinfection and dry times.
Method
Forty-five audits were completed pre and post interventions, observing adherence to policy including disinfecting the needleless …

Background:
Blood cultures are essential for diagnosing bloodstream infections including sepsis and fungal infections. Septicemia, the most costly condition treated in U.S. hospitals, affects one in 23 patients, incurring costs of $5,500 per contamination. False positives result in unnecessary expenses, excessive use of antibiotics, and extended hospital stays. According to guidelines from the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), contamination rates should not exceed 3%.
Local Problem:
In an Emergency Department (ED) in hospital in the Midwest, blood culture contamination rose from 3.8% July 2023 to as high as 6.3% in October 2023. A quality …

Background: Hospital infections caused by invasive devices can lead to significantly poor patient outcomes and life-threatening complications (Sepsis Alliance, 2024). Reducing invasive devices, when not clinically indicated, and improving compliance with evidence-based prevention standards is a proven strategy to reduce infections (Dadi et al., 2021).
Local Problem: Aurora St. Luke’s South Shore was responsible for three catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) and one central line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI) with standardized utilization ratios (SURs) for both trending over target 3 out of 4 quarters in 2022-2023. Nursing was not an active participant in device audits, so improvement opportunities …
To Be Conscious Or Not To Be, Bjørn Grinde
To Be Conscious Or Not To Be, Bjørn Grinde
Animal Sentience
Carolyn Ristau has done a fine job summarizing the work and life of the zoologist Donald Griffin. Most scientists now accept the existence of animal sentience, but identifying which species possess consciousness remains controversial. Griffin defined consciousness as "the subjective state of feeling or thinking about objects and events.” Nonconscious processes are faster and more energy-efficient, however, and often drive behavior. Consciousness probably evolved for complex decision-making, shaped by evolutionary continuity, with feelings as a common currency for evaluating outcomes. Its survival advantage may be limited, and its presence across species varies depending on evolutionary trajectories.

Accountability For Unethicality: Monitoring, Policy, And Individual Attitudes, Sara Marie Lewis
Dissertations
This research examines the mechanisms that can be used to reduce unethical behaviors, as well as their influence on employee attitudes (e.g., trust, justice, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment). Using an experimental design, participants were exposed to varying levels of accountability, monitoring, and policy to examine their interaction effects on unethical behaviors and attitudes. Two significant interactions emerged when looking at the mechanism's influence on attitudes. Policy clarity had a significant main effect on employee justice perceptions, with vague policies reducing perceptions of justice. The interaction between clear policy and accountability significantly impacted justice perceptions, highlighting the value of accountability …

Major Choices: Students’ Personal Intelligence, Considerations When Choosing A Major, And Academic Success, Kateryna Sylaska, John D. Mayer
UNH Personality Lab
A student’s choice of major is influenced by their parents and peers, as well as by the quality of the college department that offers the major and by broader cultural and economic issues. The student’s own personality, including their ability to reason about themselves and their interests, also contributes to the choice and its outcomes. In a preliminary study, we developed a Choice of Major Scale that depicts key aspects of students’ consideration of their major. Then, across three studies (Ns = 304, 466, and 492), we examined the students’ personal intelligence, defined as their capacity to reason about their …

Platform Path Optimization Method Based On Cumulative Detection Probability Of Sonar Search, Xiang Wei, Xingxuan Liu, Dianzheng Fu, Tianji Yang, Jiaxuan Yang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To address the lack of research on the optimal path of mobile search platform to search for moving targets, this paper proposes a path optimization method of mobile search platform based on cumulative search probability theory. Based on the cumulative detection probability (CDP), one of the important criteria of sensor performance evaluation, a single-peak CDP calculation formula is constructed by using a time series correlation model, namely the (λ, σ) process model. A set of target motion scenarios are constructed, and the trajectory probability of target scenarios and their CDP at different time are corrected by Bayesian posterior probability. …
The Effects Of Sleep And Culture On A Police Officer’S Mindset Involved In A Traffic Collison, Christopher Gary Cano
The Effects Of Sleep And Culture On A Police Officer’S Mindset Involved In A Traffic Collison, Christopher Gary Cano
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The host police department experienced 58 traffic collisions from 2019-2020, which resulted in adverse outcomes for police officers and community members. The police department seeks a solution to reduce and prevent future collisions. This problem is not an isolated incident, as traffic collisions have been the leading cause of death and injury to police officers in the United States for the last three decades. Previous research focused on the causative factors of traffic collisions (speeding, distracted driving); however, little research has been dedicated to why a police officer would engage in risky driving. Is the mindset of a police officer …
