Mitigating Compassion Fatigue, Sylvia Lee Christian-James
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Compassion fatigue is the physical, emotional, and spiritual result of chronic self-sacrifice and/or prolonged exposure to difficult situations that renders a person unable to love, nurture, care for, or empathize with another’s suffering. The attributes that led nursing leadership to believe compassion fatigue (CF) was an issue for registered nurses (RN) at the project site facility included increased RN turnover, vacancy rates, absenteeism, and dissatisfaction. The project was to develop a clinical practice guideline (CPG) for the RN staff of an inpatient psychiatric hospital. The practice question was as follows: Does the evidence support usability of a standardized practice guideline …
Professional Development Strategies For Nonprofit Organizations To Retain Key Talent, Anderline Celestin
Professional Development Strategies For Nonprofit Organizations To Retain Key Talent, Anderline Celestin
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Some leaders of nonprofit organizations lack effective strategies for implementing professional development programs that could improve the retention of key talent. Retaining experienced, high-performing employees is a top concern for nonprofit leaders, as these individuals are vital to the organization's success and overall performance. Grounded in the human capital theory and Herzberg’s two-factor theory, this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was conducted to explore the strategies employed by nonprofit organization leaders to implement successful professional development programs aimed at increasing the retention of key talent. The participants were eight business leaders from nonprofit organizations in the United States who have professional development …
Teachers’ Feedback Literacy Practices At An International Baccalaureate Diploma Program In Turkey, Sabrina Ann Schongalla
Teachers’ Feedback Literacy Practices At An International Baccalaureate Diploma Program In Turkey, Sabrina Ann Schongalla
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Feedback (FB) literacy refers to both student capacity to find, create, interpret, and implement FB as well as teacher capacity to use FB to guide their instructional decisions, plan FB opportunities within formative learning cycles, and offer appropriate types and levels of FB that satisfy diverse learning needs. The problem that was investigated through this study was that International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) teachers at a private Turkish high school (THS) struggle with FB literacy necessary for leveraging effective practices to enhance student learning. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine FB practices that supported student learning at …

Obesity, by any standard, is a global health crisis. Both genetic and dietary contributions to the development and maintenance of obesity were integral factors of our experimental design. As mutations of the melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4R) are the leading monogenetic cause of obesity, MC4R haploinsufficient rats were fed a range of dietary fat (0–12 %) in a longitudinal design. Physiological and motivational assessments were performed using a locomotor task, a 5-choice sucrose preference task, an operant task with fixed and progressive ratios, as well as a distraction operant task. Dendritic spine morphology of medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the nucleus …

Academic Engagement Amongst Commuter Students: A Comparative Analysis, Rebecca Turner, Oliver Webb, Christie Pritchard
Academic Engagement Amongst Commuter Students: A Comparative Analysis, Rebecca Turner, Oliver Webb, Christie Pritchard
Professional Services
As the profile of students entering higher education (HE) has diversified, so too has their residential status. Where students live partly reflects the agenda for widening access but is also a response to rising costs associated with university participation. In the UK, more students are commuting, despite associated challenges and reports of lower academic out-comes. We used survey data (N > 500) to compare engagement between first years who either relocated to attended university or commuted. Overall, commuter students appeared more engaged, demonstrating positive study behaviours and readiness to work alongside course mates. Results indicated that online learning facilitates continuity and …

Understanding The Impact Of Cultural Competency Development On College Students Through Experiential Learning: A Study Of An Honors High-Impact Course, C. H. Kevin Lee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore how students develop cultural competency through participation in an experiential learning-embedded college course. Existing literature often addresses career readiness, student success, cultural competency, and faculty-student affairs collaboration as distinct areas of research. However, while students may engage with diversity best practices as leaders or through diversity-related courses, bridging the gap between curriculum and competency development remains a critical area for ongoing discussion.
This study focused on a course I designed on Korean culture and identity, which provided an overview of topics such as history, politics, cuisine, music, and current events. The …

TBC1D3 is a primate-specific gene family that has expanded in the human lineage and has been implicated in neuronal progenitor proliferation and expansion of the frontal cortex. The gene family and its expression have been challenging to investigate because it is embedded in high-identity and highly variable segmental duplications. We sequenced and assembled the gene family using long-read sequencing data from 34 humans and 11 nonhuman primate species. Our analysis shows that this particular gene family has independently duplicated in at least five primate lineages, and the duplicated loci are enriched at sites of large-scale chromosomal rearrangements on Chromosome 17. …
Dynamic Knowledge Elicitation: Leveraging Student Feedback For Improved Language Model Distillation, Reuven Muller
Dynamic Knowledge Elicitation: Leveraging Student Feedback For Improved Language Model Distillation, Reuven Muller
Master's Theses
Large Language Models (LLMs) have significantly advanced the field of natural language processing but remain resource-intensive and impractical for many organizations. Specialist models offer a viable alternative, often developed through Knowledge Distillation (KD) techniques. However, traditional KD methods rely on predefined static datasets to elicit knowledge from the teacher model, failing to dynamically address the weaknesses of the student model during training. This research introduces two novel methods for adaptive knowledge elicitation: Feedback-Driven Question Generation and Agent-Based Targeted Question Generation. These methods iteratively expand the training dataset based on the student model’s performance, leveraging a teacher model to generate targeted …
Developing A Trauma-Aware Pedagogy, Emily Pitts Donahoe
Developing A Trauma-Aware Pedagogy, Emily Pitts Donahoe
Events
According to recent reports, nearly half of students who attend college counseling sessions say they have experienced trauma, and rates of post-traumatic stress disorder more than doubled among college students from 2017 to 2022. While instructors are not counselors and cannot treat students’ mental health concerns, it’s important to be aware of how trauma manifests in our classrooms and how we can mitigate its impacts on teaching and learning. In this workshop, we’ll examine the effects of trauma and develop strategies to support five components of trauma-aware teaching: safety; trustworthiness and transparency; peer support; collaboration and mutuality; and empowerment, voice, …

Liquid droplet dynamics are widely used in biological and engineering applications, which contain complex interfacial instabilities and pattern formation such as droplet merging, splitting, and transport. This paper studies a class of mean field control formulations for these droplet dynamics, which can be used to control and manipulate droplets in applications. We first formulate the droplet dynamics as gradient flows of free energies in modified optimal transport metrics with nonlinear mobilities. We then design an optimal control problem for these gradient flows. As an example, a lubrication equation for a thin volatile liquid film laden with an active suspension is …

The Kerr-cat qubit is a bosonic qubit in which multiphoton Schrödinger cat states are stabilized by applying a two-photon drive to an oscillator with a Kerr nonlinearity. The suppressed bit-flip rate with increasing cat size makes this qubit a promising candidate to implement quantum error correction codes tailored for noise-biased qubits. However, achieving strong light-matter interactions necessary for stabilizing and controlling this qubit has traditionally required strong microwave drives that heat the qubit and degrade its performance. In contrast, increasing the coupling to the drive port removes the need for strong drives at the expense of large Purcell decay. By …

Purpose – This paper offers a fresh perspective on this debate by exploring the direct relationship between a firm’s stock price performance and its CSR activities, placing particular emphasis on the underlying intent or motive behind the CSR initiatives.
Design/methodology/approach – This research examines the relationship between a firm’s stock price and its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, distinguishing between responsive and adaptive CSR. While responsive CSR, often a response to negative events, elicits immediate positive stock performance, adaptive CSR initially triggers negative stock performance. However, long-term analysis reveals adaptive CSR leads to positive stock performance, especially for family firms. …
Perpetua And Felicity: Faith And Courage In The Face Of Death, Mackenzie Unruh
Perpetua And Felicity: Faith And Courage In The Face Of Death, Mackenzie Unruh
Senior Honors Theses
Perpetua was a young, educated wife and mother who was martyred for her Christian faith. Because she was educated, she was able to record most of the events leading to her martyrdom in her diary. Her account was later supplemented by another author and narrator. The account also includes details about Felicity, a slave girl who was arrested with Perpetua. While Felicity is included in Perpetua’s story, most of the information about them focuses on Perpetua. Throughout history, and particularly in Medieval times, the Church has painted her as a perfect saint who rejected her family for unity with Christ. …

The Ensemble Code As A Constructed Working Memory, Jacob Zepp
The Ensemble Code As A Constructed Working Memory, Jacob Zepp
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation formalizes and refines a new theory of ensemble coding: the Non-Selective Transfer Model. Within this theory, ensemble codes and subsequent summary judgments are the result of representations constructed over a subset of information that is encoded into working memory. The work begins with a brief review of current ideas present within the ensemble coding literature, followed by a set of formalized descriptions of ensemble coding theories that have been proposed. A discussion of relevant theories present in the working memory literature is also provided to motivate the structure of the subsequent model. The Non-Selective Transfer Model 2 is …

The assembly has been adopted as the rat reference assembly by the Genome Reference Consortium and is named GRCr8. The assembly has employed 40× Pacific Biosciences (PacBio) HiFi sequencing coverage and scaffolding using optical mapping and Hi-C. We used genomic DNA from a male BN/NHsdMcwi (BN) rat of the same strain and from the same colony as the prior reference assembly, mRatBN7.2. The assembly is at chromosome level with 98.7% of the sequence assigned …
Regarding Friendship In Place-Based Development For Colleges And Universities, Craig Mattson
Regarding Friendship In Place-Based Development For Colleges And Universities, Craig Mattson
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This paper addresses the phenomenon of colleges and universities that attempt to repair the reputation of higher education in American society by engaging long disregarded or damned neighbors. This engagement is both long overdue and deeply fraught, especially as predominantly white academic communities interact with Black and Brown organizations and neighborhoods. Drawing on interview data from qualitative interviews among predominantly white institutions and residents of color, this essay argues that one way to decolonize college and community partnerships would entail the practice friendship across institutional and ethnic lines.

Kernels Of Motor Memory Formation: Temporal Generalization In Bimanual Adaptation, Ian S. Howard, Sae Franklin, David W. Franklin
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In daily life, we coordinate both simultaneous and sequential bimanual movements to manipulate objects. Our ability to rapidly account for different object dynamics suggests there are neural mechanisms to quickly deal with them. Here we investigate how actions of one arm can serve as a contextual cue for the other arm and facilitate adaptation. Specifically, we examine the temporal characteristics that underlie motor memory formation and recall, by testing the contextual effects of prior, simultaneous, and post contralateral arm movements in both male and female human participants. To do so, we measure their temporal generalization in three bimanual interference tasks. …

Existing literature suggests that infection-specific mechanisms may play a significant role in the onset and progression of dementia, as opposed to the broader phenomenon of systemic inflammation. In addition, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG)-coenzyme A (CoA) reductase inhibitors have been proposed as a potential therapeutic approach for sepsis, given their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We investigated the neuroprotective effect of an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (simvastatin) by analyzing neurodegenerative markers, mitochondrial respiration, and neuronal tracing in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and thalamic nucleus reuniens (RE) of sepsis survivor animals. Adult Wistar rats were subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture or left non-manipulated. …

Robust Voltage Regulation For Dc Microgrids Via Passivity-Based Sliding Mode Control, Edoardo Vacchini, Michele Cucuzzella, Pablo Borja, Antonella Ferrara
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper proposes a decentralized sliding mode control approach to the voltage regulation problem in a DC microgrid consisting of distributed generation units interconnected with each other through resistive-inductive power lines and supplying unknown nonlinear loads. In particular, the port-Hamiltonian structure of the system suggests the design of a suitable sliding manifold such that the system on this manifold exhibits desired passivity properties. This approach simplifies the control design and relaxes some restrictive assumptions required by other controllers proposed in the literature, while offering satisfactory performance.

In this nonpayment proceeding, the court issued an Interim Order to Correct, requiring the landlord to address multiple housing code violations, including mold and a broken toilet, within specific timeframes. The court found that the uninhabitable conditions in the apartment, including the broken toilet, necessitated the issuance of a Class C violation. This order was issued without prejudice to the landlord's defenses in an anticipated Housing Part proceeding brought by the tenant.
