Determining The Role Of The Histone Demethylase Kdm5b In Microglial Reactivity To Ethanol, Jessica Wohlfahrt Nov 2024

Determining The Role Of The Histone Demethylase Kdm5b In Microglial Reactivity To Ethanol, Jessica Wohlfahrt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Through their involvement in various processes such as phagocytosis of foreign materials and damaged cellular debris, regulatory factor release, and surveillance, the macrophages of the brain, microglia, maintain homeostasis within the central nervous system. These diverse microglial functions therefore require transition to a range of phenotypic states. The epigenetic regulation of this activity, especially through trimethylation of lysine 4 on histone H3, and its regulator, lysine demethylase (KDM)5B, is an emerging research area. KDM5B has been implicated in several diseases including cancer, inflammatory disorders, and alcohol use disorder (AUD), the latter being the focus of this dissertation project. Deep proteomic …

All Decisions

The landlord sought arrears for a rent-stabilized unit, but the tenant successfully asserted a rent-impairing violation defense under MDL § 302-a. The court found the landlord barred from collecting rent for June 2020–May 2022 due to an uncorrected HPD violation, granting a 100% rent abatement and dismissing the petition. The tenant was awarded the deposited funds, and counterclaims remain for further proceedings.

Introduction: Accurate report of stool form is essential to diagnosis and assessment of treatment response. The modified Bristol Stool Form Scale for Children (mBSFS-C) classifies stool form into 5 types and is reliable and valid. However, a direct comparison of provider's and children's ratings using the mBSFS-C vs the traditional BSFS that uses 7 stool form types has not been done.

Methods: Pediatric gastroenterology providers and children rated the same 35 stool photographs, reflecting diverse stool forms, using both scales. The order of photograph presentation and scale use were randomized. For each photograph, the most common rating (modal rating) was …

Flexible Docking Method Development For Computer-Aided Drug Design, Luke C. Warrensford Nov 2024

Flexible Docking Method Development For Computer-Aided Drug Design, Luke C. Warrensford

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modern drug discovery, the process of identifying or developing novel therapeutic compounds to treat a disease, increasingly relies on computational methods to make the process faster and more efficient. One of the most useful tools in the computer-aided drug design toolbox is molecular docking, the simulation of a protein-ligand complex to determine ligand binding affinity. The results from molecular docking help inform the overall drug discovery process on which compounds have more potential to be potent inhibitors, thus saving time and resources during the later and more expensive stages of drug discovery. Two important considerations of modern docking methods are …

Human noroviruses (HuNoVs) are a significant cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide. The lack of a reproducible culture system hindered the study of HuNoV replication and pathogenesis for almost a half-century. This barrier was overcome with our successful cultivation of multiple HuNoV strains in human intestinal enteroids (HIEs), which has significantly advanced HuNoV research. We optimized culture media conditions and generated genetically modified HIE cultures to enhance HuNoV replication in HIEs. Building upon these achievements, we now present new insights into this culture system, which involve testing different media, unique HIE lines, and additional virus strains. HuNoV infectivity …

Framing Barbie: A Thematic Analysis Of News Media, Mckenzie Muskett Nov 2024

Framing Barbie: A Thematic Analysis Of News Media, Mckenzie Muskett

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study qualitatively examined how newspapers and digital media sources frame the 2023 movie, Barbie, and how news media can either perpetuate stereotypes or uproot them. This was done by first facilitating a thematic analysis of newspaper articles from five major U.S news outlets, New York Times, Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, and Chicago Tribune, and then from four major digital news outlets, Newsweek, Reuters, BBC, and NewsNation. This study utilized framing theory to identify ten frames news outlets used to frame Barbie. Additionally, feminist theory was implemented to inform the findings and analyze the articles. …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Several studies have shown interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a chronic condition that poses challenges in both diagnosis and treatment, is associated with painful pelvic floor muscles (PFM) and altered neural drive to these muscles. However, its pathophysiology could also involve other alterations in the electrical activity of PFM motor units (MUs). Studying these alterations could provide novel insights into IC/BPS and help its clinical management. This study aimed to characterize PFM activity at the MU level in women with IC/BPS and pelvic floor myalgia using high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG). Signals were recorded from 15 patients and 15 healthy controls …

Circuitry may control and/or drive the brightness and/or luminance of pixels within displays. For example, an AR head-mounted display (HMD) may include and/or represent circuitry, such as a driver unit, that controls and/or drives the brightness and/or luminance of a perceptual quantizer (PQ) and/or gamma display. In one example, the circuitry may implement 8-bit counters to control the brightness and/or luminance of pixels within the PQ or gamma display. Unfortunately, such 8-bit counters may fail to enable the display to accurately reproduce perceptual brightness and/or luminance consistent with and/or under the Barten sensitivity curve and/or model. In another example, the …

Sensor Fusion For Low Latency Palm Rejection Using Artificial Intelligence, Hadi Zadeh, Fei Wu Nov 2024

Sensor Fusion For Low Latency Palm Rejection Using Artificial Intelligence, Hadi Zadeh, Fei Wu

Defensive Publications Series

On devices with multiple input modalities, it can be difficult to ensure input accuracy, false palm detection, and provide low latency in the user experience of providing input and receiving corresponding response. Latency can come from the operating system application, or firmware catching up with speedy input from the user. In current devices, data from various input sources is used independently which can cause false palm detection and also introduces latency. This disclosure describes a central multi-sensor input hub (sensor hub) that enhances user input experiences on devices that support multiple input devices. The sensor hub can be implemented as …

Abraham's Silence, Roy Allan B. Tolentino Nov 2024

Abraham's Silence, Roy Allan B. Tolentino

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

Adherents and critics of religion both have to face the conundrum of violence committed in the name of religion. Under what conditions would religions that espouse peace provide religious justification for violence? A reading of Kierkegaard’s Fear and Trembling reveals that the exception granted to Abraham, “the teleological suspension of the ethical,” only occurs in the context of “an absolute relation with the Absolute.” Abraham’s relationship with God reorients his relationship with Isaac, thus permitting Abraham to transgress the ethical in sacrificing his son. While this might appear to justify violence in the name of religion, the aporia of Abraham’s …

Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele Nov 2024

Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele

Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture

That the ideal way to communicate and reach understanding is by speaking the same language, is a widespread view: it is rarely questioned in debates concerning language, (intercultural) communication, and interpretation. I shall argue that Hans-Georg Gadamer, too, suffers from this common language “syndrome.” Donald Davidson is one of the few philosophers who explicitly uttered qualms about the necessity of a common language. Davidson critiques Gadamer’s common language idea, and rightly claims that a common language is not needed for communication and understanding. I show that Davidson has been unable to develop this insight fruitfully and underestimates the importance of …

“What Kind Of Teacher Are You?”: Critical Communication Pedagogy In Abbott Elementary, India Hagen-Gates Nov 2024

“What Kind Of Teacher Are You?”: Critical Communication Pedagogy In Abbott Elementary, India Hagen-Gates

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

In December 2021, Abbott Elementary debuted their first episode, following a cast of diverse teachers at an underfunded elementary school in Philadelphia. While there is previous research on the importance of tv representation and pedagogical practices in the media, this show presents a unique opportunity for analysis. Using Fassett and Warren’s (2007) commitments of Critical Communication Pedagogy as my main theoretical guide, I argue that Abbott Elementary showcases the ongoing process to improve pedagogy, specifically in the commitments of culture as central, language as constitutive, and reflexivity as essential.

National parks and protected wilderness areas provide benefits through leisure activities to many. Yet, many people with disabilities are unable to experience these benefits because of barriers. Therefore, it is important to understand how to improve access to these spaces for people with disabilities. The objective of this study is to identify barriers and facilitators to accessibility in national parks and protected natural areas. Using a scoping review methodology, we searched eighteen academic databases and found 44 sources meeting our eligibility criteria. Our findings include tables that map the literature by publication year, types of disabilities, specific national parks, park …
