Erk Activation Dynamics In Maturing Oocyte Controls Embryonic Nuclear Divisions In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Han Bit Baek, Debabrata Das, Shin-Yu Chen, Hongyuan Li, Swathi Arur
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
ERK activity oscillates between sustained activation during oocyte formation and transient inactivation during oocyte maturation, fertilization, and early embryogenesis. Consequences of ectopic ERK activity upon oocyte maturation and in early embryogenesis are unknown. We show, in Caenorhabditis elegans, that ectopic ERK activity upon oocyte maturation (metaphase I oocytes) results in embryos with abnormalities in nuclear divisions leading to embryonic death. We uncover that ERK directly phosphorylates Polo-like kinase I (PLK-1), on Serine 404, to inhibit nuclear envelope breakdown (NEBD) in early embryogenesis. The RAS/ERK/PLK-1 pathway poisons zygotic NEBD and inhibits the merging of parental genomes, underlining the importance of turning …
Heterogeneity Of Treatment Effect: The Case For Individualising Oxygen Therapy In Critically Ill Patients, Daniel S Martin, Michael P W Grocott
Heterogeneity Of Treatment Effect: The Case For Individualising Oxygen Therapy In Critically Ill Patients, Daniel S Martin, Michael P W Grocott
Peninsula Medical School
Oxygen therapy is ubiquitous in critical illness but oxygenation targets to guide therapy remain controversial despite several large randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Findings from RCTs evaluating different approaches to oxygen therapy in critical illness present a confused picture for several reasons. Differences in both oxygen target measures (e.g. oxygen saturation or partial pressure) and the numerical thresholds used to define lower and higher targets complicate comparisons between trials. The duration of and adherence to oxygenation targets is also variable with consequent substantial variation in both the dose and the dose separation. Finally, heterogeneity of treatment effects (HTE) may also be …

The Degree Of Dependence Of The Jordanian Public On Social Media In Health Awareness Of Obesity Diseases (Survey Study), Jumana Irshiedat, Kamel Khurshid Murad
Middle East Journal of Communication Studies
The article aimed to reveal the dependency of social media platforms in educating the Jordanian public about obesity diseases and explore the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral effects on the Jordanian public. The survey method was adopted; an approach used in descriptive studies, and the questionnaire tool was used to a sample (357) of the Jordanian public in Amman. The study-produced results including the platform most used by the Jordanian public to receive knowledge about health awareness is WhatsApp in the first place, followed by Instagram and then Facebook. The results also showed that the health topics of most interest to …
Hermeneutical Injustice And Special Education, Nicole Reid
Hermeneutical Injustice And Special Education, Nicole Reid
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
Hermeneutics is a branch of philosophy that is concerned with interpretation. Importantly, it is concerned with the interpretation, understanding, and communication of our own experiences. Our identities, how they are constructed and performed, are based a large part on how we interpret, understand, and communicate our experiences. Hermeneutical injustice, then, occurs when there is a gap in our own ability to understand our experiences let alone communicate them to others. This directly impacts identity. Students in the K-12 Special Education system in this country experience this lacuna. In this paper I will explore the Hermeneutical injustice faced by students in …
Indispensability Arguments And Proclus’S Deductive Proofs For Mathematical Platonism, Bridget Boczar
Indispensability Arguments And Proclus’S Deductive Proofs For Mathematical Platonism, Bridget Boczar
Acta Cogitata: An Undergraduate Journal in Philosophy
This article analyzes two types of arguments for mathematical platonism, paying close attention to the deductive argument advanced by Proclus. In the first section of the article, I lay out two arguments for mathematical platonism: a contemporary indispensability argument and Proclus’s more ancient Neoplatonic argument. The former takes an approach based on ‘inference to the best explanation’ and scientific theories, but as a result, faces serious objections. For example, scientific theories change, and because the argument is dependent on the latest scientific theories, it seems that the argument cannot give one epistemic certainty in the conclusion. The latter argument draws …
The Blockbuster Amendment To Cplr 2106 Permitting Any Person To Submit An Affirmation In Lieu Of An Affidavit, Patrick M. Connors
The Blockbuster Amendment To Cplr 2106 Permitting Any Person To Submit An Affirmation In Lieu Of An Affidavit, Patrick M. Connors
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Traditionally, the affidavit has been the foremost source of proof on motions in New York State courts. Effective January 1, 2024, New York Civil Practice Law and Rules (“CPLR”) 2106 was substantially amended to allow any person to submit an affirmation in lieu of an affidavit, “with the same force and effect.” This is the most significant change to the CPLR in the twenty-first century and will impact many areas of civil procedure.
As those who have already grappled with the amendment to CPLR 2106 know, there are now numerous issues relating to the legislation that will need to …

Carson City Mints A Base Ball Club, 1869–1870, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Monographs
Baseball clubs had been organized in Nevada since at least 1866, but the organization of the Silver Star Base Ball Club (BBC) in Carson City in 1869 marked a change for the sport in the state. Some of the employees at the newly constructed Carson City Mint had experience playing for top ball clubs in the East, and other experienced ballplayers lived in the nearby mining community of Virginia City. The Silver City and Virginia clubs initiated intercity competition in 1869. In 1870, the Silver Star BBC picked up players from the Virginia BBC and played six games on a …
Create Engaging Library Resource Lists: Helping Faculty Discover Educational Technologies For Curating And Sharing Library Resources, Allison Faix, Ariana Baker
Create Engaging Library Resource Lists: Helping Faculty Discover Educational Technologies For Curating And Sharing Library Resources, Allison Faix, Ariana Baker
The Southeastern Librarian
Academic libraries have long supported faculty’s use of reading lists. The need for this support has only increased with the growing popularity of distance learning as well as the shifting resource use patterns brought on by online learning during the covid-19 pandemic. However, reading list software can be pro-hibitively expensive while not always meeting faculty needs, and traditional print-based course reserves can only be accessed in person in the library, creating unnecessary barriers for students. This article ex-plores alternatives to commercial reading list software. Librarians can consider promoting these tools to help faculty meet their instructional goals and help students …

Spatiotemporal Patterns Of Chlorophyll-A Concentration In A Hypersaline Lake Using High Temporal Resolution Remotely Sensed Imagery, R. Douglas Ramsey, Soren M. Brothers, Melissa Cobo, Wayne A. Wurtsbaugh
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
The Great Salt Lake (GSL) is the largest saline lake in the Western Hemisphere. It supports billion-dollar industries and recreational activities, and is a vital stopping point for migratory birds. However, little is known about the spatiotemporal variation of phytoplankton biomass in the lake that supports these resources. Spectral reflectance provided by three remote sensing products was compared relative to their relationship with field measurements of chlorophyll a (Chl a). The MODIS product MCD43A4 with a 500 m spatial resolution provided the best overall ability to map the daily distribution of Chl a. The imagery indicated significant spatial …

Assessing The Influence Of An Eastern State's Disciplinary Alternative Education Program On Secondary Student Behavior, Alicia Michelle Gallaway
Assessing The Influence Of An Eastern State's Disciplinary Alternative Education Program On Secondary Student Behavior, Alicia Michelle Gallaway
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Services at the local disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) include counseling and behavioral services to referred secondary students, aiming to improve their behavior. The problem addressed in this quantitative study was that a DAEP was in place in the local district since 2009, but there had been no formal assessment to determine whether differences in student discipline occurred in the semester before and the semester after students attended the DAEP. Guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, the purpose of this ex post facto, causal-comparative, quasi-experimental study was to investigate if there was a difference in student discipline as measured by …
Religious Identity, Sexual Identity, And Internalized Homophobia In Adults Who Have Deidentified From Christianity, Kevin Roum
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Over the past three decades, the percentage of the United States population that identifies as Christian has dropped significantly. At the same time, the level of acceptance of gay, lesbian, and bisexual identities has increased. However, this overall acceptance does not necessarily lead to an acceptance of these identities within specific Christian communities, leading to gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals having contradictory experiences between their Christian upbringing and secular society. Individuals who no longer identify as Christian after being so raised may experience additional dissonance as their sexuality identity conflicts with the teachings they were raised to believe yet no …

Staff Education To Increase Awareness And Readiness Of Clinicians To Use The Clinical Decision Support For Immunization (Cdsi) Tool, Lemlem Erketa Ejo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Accurate evaluation and forecasting of immunization and ensuring the right vaccines are administered at the right time are essential for the success of immunization programs. Interpreting the clinically written Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) recommendations by individual clinicians is time-consuming and complex, increasing the risk of misinterpretation, inconsistent practice, and inaccurate immunization evaluation and forecasting. Thus, the purpose of this project is to introduce clinicians at the selected project site to an evidence based clinical decision support tool and evaluate participants readiness to utilize the tool. Staff education on the clinical decision support for immunization (CDSi) tool was conducted …

The Notorious C.E.C.—An Analysis Of California Evidence Code Section 352.2, Kendyl Barnholtz
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
On January 1, 2023, California metaphorically dropped the mic, becoming the first state in the country to limit the use of creative expression evidence in criminal trials. The “Decriminalizing Artistic Expression Act,” or Assembly Bill 2799, was enacted as an amendment to the California Evidence Code, codified as Section 352.2. Positioned as the vanguard of a nationwide shift, this law is a formidable response to mounting apprehensions surrounding the improper admission of artistic expression, namely rap lyrics, in criminal cases. The law imposes limitations on the admission of creative expression evidence by mandating that California courts evaluate specific factors, addressing …

Photogalvanic Shift Currents In Bifeo3-Lafeo3 Superlattices, Francesco Delodovici, Charles Paillard
Photogalvanic Shift Currents In Bifeo3-Lafeo3 Superlattices, Francesco Delodovici, Charles Paillard
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Designing materials with a controlled photovoltaic response may lead to improved solar cells or photosensors. In this regard, ferroelectric superlattices have emerged as a rich platform to engineer functional properties. In addition, ferroelectrics are naturally endowed with a bulk photovoltaic response stemming from nonthermalized photoexcited carriers, which can overcome the fundamental limits of current solar cells. Yet, their photovoltaic output has been limited by poor optical absorption and poor charge collection or photoexcited carrier mean free path. We use Density Functional Theory and Wannierization to compute the so-called Bulk Photovoltaic shift current and the optical properties of BiFeO3/LaFeO3 superlattices. We …

The Video Game Industry Needs A Buff: Accessibility Guidelines For Video Game Design, Amy Truong
Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review
This Note examines the absence of standardized accessibility measures within the video game industry, focusing on the impact on game design inclusivity. First, it explores the limitations of existing frame works, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act and the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, revealing shortcomings in ensuring equitable access for all gamers. Then, it contends that the current legal landscape falls short of ensuring that all gamers have equal access and opportunity to play. In response to these deficiencies, this Note advocates the adoption of comprehensive accessibility game design guidelines. It then addresses potential conflicts with …
Daily Pain Experiences And Coping Approaches Among Women In Midlife With Elevated Risk For Cardiovascular Disease, Laura Travers
Daily Pain Experiences And Coping Approaches Among Women In Midlife With Elevated Risk For Cardiovascular Disease, Laura Travers
Theses and Dissertations
Millions of adults experience significant pain each year, costing individuals and our economy millions of dollars in lost productivity and negatively impacting quality of life. Pain is more common among women than men and is a known barrier to women’s physical activity (PA) engagement. Yet, PA helps manage pain and buffer against conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD). For women in midlife with CVD risk factors (e.g., hypertension), little is known about daily pain fluctuation and the coping skills employed to manage pain. The current study examined daily pain and pain coping experiences among women ages 40-60 with one or …
