Ramla, The Pool Of The Arches: New Evidence For The Water Inlet Into The Pool (Pp. 125–161), Ron Toueg, Yael D. Arnon

'Atiqot

The Pool of the Arches in Ramla has been studied architecturally and historically, but never tested archaeologically. Large-scale conservation works at the site offered a rare opportunity for an archaeological examination. Two areas were opened with the aim of revealing the water inlet into the pool and to resolve the reason for the construction of the pool at this location. Based on pottery finds, it seems that the pool ceased to be used during the Tulunid regime, in the late ninth or the beginning of the tenth century CE. This dating matches the date in which the Umayyad aqueduct ceased …

The Inscriptions On The Milestones From The Bet Neṭofa Valley (Pp. 61–64), Benjamin Isaac Jan 2025

The Inscriptions On The Milestones From The Bet Neṭofa Valley (Pp. 61–64), Benjamin Isaac

'Atiqot

Three milestones, inscribed in Latin, were found in the excavations in the Bet Neṭofa Valley. Two milestones are attributed the reign of Hadrian, one is dated to the beginning of his reign, in 120 CE, and the other, to his visit to the region in 130 CE. The third milestone dates to the days of Constantine the Great and his sons, between 333 and 337 CE. These milestones are important evidence of the earliest and latest recorded stages of systematic road-planning in Judea-Palestina.

Five Incised Stone Slabs From Maresha (Pp. 45–60), Yael Young Jan 2025

Five Incised Stone Slabs From Maresha (Pp. 45–60), Yael Young

'Atiqot

A group of five fragmentary stone slabs, each bearing incised or engraved figures, was unearthed within Subterranean Complex 57 at Maresha in the Judean Shephelah. The incisions belong to two categories based on their composition: arbitrary (i.e., graffito art) or planned. It is difficult to attribute graffito-art to a specific period on stylistic grounds alone; however, based on comparisons with graffito art previously documented at the site and its vicinity, the slabs probably date to the Hellenistic period (third or second centuries BCE).

Anastylosis Of The Obelisk In The Eastern Circus At Caesarea Maritima (Pp. 175–192), Yoram Sa‘Ad

'Atiqot

In the center of the Eastern Circus at Caesarea, a fallen obelisk was found broken, in three parts. Considering its importance and special nature, it was decided to raise it on its original location. To do so, a committee of experts, including historians, archaeologists, architects, engineers and conservators, was consulted. The article illustrates the engineering plan, the decision-making processes and the outcome of the anastylosis.

Statues From The Eastern Circus At Caesarea Maritima (Pp. 141–159), Rivka Gersht

'Atiqot

Fragments of four statues were uncovered during the 2001–2004 excavations in the Eastern Circus at Caesarea. These were clearly part of the decoration scheme of the spina. Three of the fragments are of human figures—two belong to draped female figures—and the fourth is a fragment of an animal (a bull?). This article attempts to interpret each of the sculpted images within the environment of the circus. It appears that the Eastern Circus was affluently decorated, in accordance with the findings from other circuses throughout the Roman Empire.

Radiocarbon Dating Of The Plaster Of Siloam Pool In The City Of David (Pp. 79–81), Elisabetta Boaretto

'Atiqot

Plaster samples were collected from the outer face of the dam wall of the Siloam Pool in the City of David. The age obtained corresponds to the Persian and Hellenistic periods. The discrepancy between this date and the date based on the archaeological material and stratigraphy (seventh century–586 BCE) is currently difficult to explain.

Ḥorbat ‘Illin Taḥtit: A Late Early Bronze Age Ia–B Settlement In The Bet Shemesh Region (Pp. 1–46), Ron Be’Eri, Yitzhak Paz, Nuha Agha, Anat Cohen-Weinberger, Ariel Vered

'Atiqot

The excavation conducted at Ḥorbat ‘Illin Taḥtit (Lower) revealed the fringes of the previously excavated Early Bronze Age settlement at the site. A large residential structure, comprising two adjoining rooms and a large courtyard, was uncovered, as well as another, partially preserved structure, which was separated from it by an alleyway. Almost all the excavation loci contained a mixture of EB IA and EB IB pottery types. A small assemblage of knapped flint artifacts was unearthed; they were well-preserved and homogenous in composition. The small assemblage of faunal remains points to an economy based on sheep, goat and cattle. The …

Chemical And Lead Isotope Composition Of Metal Scrap From Giv‘Ati Parking Lot, Jerusalem (Pp. 347–349), Naama Yahalom-Mack, Ofir Tirosh, Yigal Erel

'Atiqot

Selected metal artifacts and slag from the small-scale Umayyad-period metallurgical workshop uncovered in Givʻati Parking Lot were subjected to chemical and Lead Isotope Analysis. Based on the homogeneous lead isotopic composition of the objects, it was concluded that they were mass-produced during the Byzantine period, using lead from a single source, possibly in Britain or in France. The activity in the workshop included the remelting of older Byzantine-period cultic paraphernalia to form new objects.

The Coins From The Monastery At Har Ḥoma (Pp. 297–300), Gabriela Bijovsky Jan 2025

The Coins From The Monastery At Har Ḥoma (Pp. 297–300), Gabriela Bijovsky

'Atiqot

Eleven coins were discovered in the excavation of the monastery at Har Ḥoma, including a small hoard of three Byzantine gold solidi that was found hidden in the entrance of one of the monastery rooms. This hoard is of great value and would have equaled two months of food supply for all the monks who lived in the coenobium. The reasons for its concealment remain unknown; however, it may be linked to events related to the Persian invasion of 614 CE.

'Atiqot

The excavations at Ḥorbat Ṭarbenet yielded nine amphora fragments: three stamped handles and two toes from Rhodes; one stamped handle and one toe from Knidos; one possible Republican Ovoid Amphora toe; and one unidentified Late Roman toe.

The Coins From Gane Ṭal (Pp. 273–284), Donald T. Ariel Jan 2025

The Coins From Gane Ṭal (Pp. 273–284), Donald T. Ariel

'Atiqot

The excavation at Gane Ṭal yielded coins dating from the Early–Late Roman, Byzantine, and Ayyūbid and Mamluk periods. Most of the coins date from the Byzantine period, from the fourth–fifth and the sixth–seventh centuries CE. Noteworthy is the fact that most of the sixth–seventh-century coins date to the period before 541/2 CE, the time of the Justinianic plague. It is possible that the decline of the settlement was related to this plague; however, it might have also been the outcome of other historical circumstances.

The Archaeozoology Of Bronze Age Offerings From Burial Cave 900 In Naḥal Refa’Im, Jerusalem (Pp. 75–100), Liora Kolska Horwitz Jan 2025

The Archaeozoology Of Bronze Age Offerings From Burial Cave 900 In Naḥal Refa’Im, Jerusalem (Pp. 75–100), Liora Kolska Horwitz

'Atiqot

The animal remains recovered during the salvage excavations in Cave 900 were interspersed among human skeletal remains, ceramics, weapons and ornaments. It is apparent that the faunal remains represent exclusively domestic sheep (Ovis aries) and goat (Capra hircus) that were slaughtered as part of Bronze Age mortuary rituals. This assemblage provides additional evidence for the widespread nature of the funeral feast in both the Intermediate Bronze Age and Middle Bronze Age IIB.

Pottery And Small Finds From Burial Cave 900 In Naḥal Refa’Im, Jerusalem (Pp. 33–67), Lilly Gershuny

'Atiqot

A total of 107 pottery vessels were discovered in the cave, dating from the Intermediate Bronze Age and Middle Bronze Age II. The Intermediate Bronze Age assemblage was found in situ and as such, is an important contribution to the study of this period in greater Jerusalem. The finds from this period include jars, a four-spouted lamp and a stopper. The MB II pottery includes piriform juglets, globular bowls, jugs, store jars and dipper juglets. Three unique specimens were found: an unusually decorated Tell el-Yahudiyeh juglet; a ring flask—the earliest of its kind in Canaan; and an intact bull-shaped rython. …

Subterranean Complex 147 At Maresha: The Construction Phases Of The Columbarium (Pp. 37–48), Ian Stern, Bernie Alpert, Amos Kloner

'Atiqot

Excavations in Subterranean Complex 147 in Maresha revealed several building phases of the large columbarium. The fill within the installation consisted of pottery ranging in date from the Iron Age II through the Hellenistic period, mainly from the second century BCE. Columbaria had an important function in the lifestyle of the local population in the Judean Shephelah in general, and at Maresha in particular. This is connected with fact that pigeons were a source of food, a cultic offering, and their droppings were used as fertilizer.

'Atiqot

A salvage excavation conducted south of the central bus station in ‘Akko uncovered a Hellenistic-period pit. The fill in the pit contained a large quantity of potsherds, including 21 stamped amphora handles and 3 terracotta figurines. The stamped handles belong to the Rhodian class, dating from the end of the third quarter of the third century until the third quarter of the second century BCE. The terracotta figurines are made of well-levigated clay, bearing white slip and traces of black and brown paint. They represent a bird/dove, a female human and a horse-and-rider. The figurines belong to the Western Greek …

MPP Published Research

We discuss some classical conundrums about Euclid's Fourth Postulate. Our inquire sheds lights on the role the postulate is playing within the deductive structure of Book I of the Elements and provides a proof of it fully admissible within Euclid's original setting.

The Role Of Visual Analytics In Remote Sensing Spatial Data Interpretation, Iswari Nur Hidayati, R Suharyadi, Andhika Wisnu Pratama, Herdiansyah Herdiansyah

Jurnal Pendidikan Geografi: Kajian, Teori, dan Praktek dalam Bidang Pendidikan dan Ilmu Geografi

In remote sensing spatial data analysis, various methods are used to understand and evaluate the information obtained. The approach used so far is remote sensing visual analysis which offers various advantages compared to other methods. Visual analysis utilizes visualization techniques to facilitate the identification and interpolation of highly complex patterns of presented spatial data. The main advantage of this analysis is that it presents information that is easy to understand with an approach to spatial data interpretation elements. Another advantage of visual analysis is that it presents intuitive data that allows it to be analyzed quickly, observing relationships and changes …

Voices For Justice: Firsthand Accounts Of Innocent People Fighting For Access In New York’S Post-Conviction Process, Perlmutter Center For Legal Justice At Cardozo Law Jan 2025

Voices For Justice: Firsthand Accounts Of Innocent People Fighting For Access In New York’S Post-Conviction Process, Perlmutter Center For Legal Justice At Cardozo Law

Perlmutter Center Reports

In 2018, the New York State Court of Appeals’ decision in People v. Natascha Tiger created an insurmountable obstacle for wrongfully convicted individuals pursuing innocence claims. The ruling held that a guilty plea precluded persons accused of crime from challenging their conviction in the absence of newly discovered, exculpatory DNA evidence. This is a troubling fact given 97% of felony convictions and 99% of misdemeanor convictions in New York State are resolved by guilty plea. The National Registry of Exonerations documented that 24% of all exonerated people across the United States pled guilty to crimes they did not commit. According …

Examining The Effects Of A Social Cognitive Intervention Aimed At Promoting Appropriate Antibiotic Use Self-Efficacy, Erin M. Hill, Andriana Frost

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Our goal in this study was to examine the effect of a social cognitive intervention aimed at improving appropriate antibiotic use self-efficacy (AAUSE). The intervention incorporated several aspects of self-efficacy theory, including mastery, vicarious learning, and verbal persuasion. To test the effectiveness of the intervention, we used two comparison conditions—reading a pamphlet focused on antibiotic resistance (ABR) or one focused on general health (diet, physical activity, sleep). A total of 226 undergraduate students completed the study, which involved completing a series of questions/questionnaires at time 1 (preintervention), engaging in the intervention (or reading a pamphlet), and then completing the time …
