Voices For Justice: Firsthand Accounts Of Innocent People Fighting For Access In New York’S Post-Conviction Process, Perlmutter Center For Legal Justice At Cardozo Law

Perlmutter Center Reports

In 2018, the New York State Court of Appeals’ decision in People v. Natascha Tiger created an insurmountable obstacle for wrongfully convicted individuals pursuing innocence claims. The ruling held that a guilty plea precluded persons accused of crime from challenging their conviction in the absence of newly discovered, exculpatory DNA evidence. This is a troubling fact given 97% of felony convictions and 99% of misdemeanor convictions in New York State are resolved by guilty plea. The National Registry of Exonerations documented that 24% of all exonerated people across the United States pled guilty to crimes they did not commit. According …

Examining The Effects Of A Social Cognitive Intervention Aimed At Promoting Appropriate Antibiotic Use Self-Efficacy, Erin M. Hill, Andriana Frost

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Our goal in this study was to examine the effect of a social cognitive intervention aimed at improving appropriate antibiotic use self-efficacy (AAUSE). The intervention incorporated several aspects of self-efficacy theory, including mastery, vicarious learning, and verbal persuasion. To test the effectiveness of the intervention, we used two comparison conditions—reading a pamphlet focused on antibiotic resistance (ABR) or one focused on general health (diet, physical activity, sleep). A total of 226 undergraduate students completed the study, which involved completing a series of questions/questionnaires at time 1 (preintervention), engaging in the intervention (or reading a pamphlet), and then completing the time …

Ccmsi V. Odell, 141 Nev. Adv. Op. 5 (Jan. 30, 2025), Victoria Callier

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The court held that an employee seeking a conclusive presumption for disabling heart issues under NRS 617.457(11) only needs to take remedial action against predisposing conditions that caused those issues. The court acknowledged that the statute provides an affirmative defense for employers against workers’ compensation claims if they can prove that the employee failed to correct conditions leading to heart disease. However, the court clarified that the plain language of the statute shows that the affirmative defense only works if the predisposing condition actually caused the heart disease and does not apply to all conditions. Therefore, even if an employee …

Understanding Anionic Hyperporphyrins: Tddft Calculations On Peripherally Deprotonated Meso-Tetrakis(4-Hydroxyphenyl)Porphyrin., Jeanet Conradie, Carl C. Wamser, Abhik Ghosh

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Presented herein is a DFT/TDDFT study of -tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)porphyrin (H[THPP]) and its Meso-deprotonated tetraanionic form; the latter was modeled as both a free tetraanion and with various counterions. Based on our calculations, the experimentally observed hyperporphyrin spectra are attributed to an admixture of phenol/phenoxide character into the a-type HOMO of tetraphenylporphyrin. The admixture results in an elevation of the orbital energy of the HOMO in relation to other frontier orbitals, which accounts for the observed spectral redshifts. The calculations underscore differences in the performance of different exchange-correlation functionals. Thus, while the popular hybrid functional B3LYP greatly exaggerates the redshift of …

Distinguishing Classes Of Neuroactive Drugs Based On Computational Physicochemical Properties And Experimental Phenotypic Profiling In Planarians, Danielle Ireland, Christina Rabeler, Sagar Rao , '22, R. J. Richardson, Eva-Maria S. Collins Jan 2025

Distinguishing Classes Of Neuroactive Drugs Based On Computational Physicochemical Properties And Experimental Phenotypic Profiling In Planarians, Danielle Ireland, Christina Rabeler, Sagar Rao , '22, R. J. Richardson, Eva-Maria S. Collins

Biology Faculty Works

Mental illnesses put a tremendous burden on afflicted individuals and society. Identification of novel drugs to treat such conditions is intrinsically challenging due to the complexity of neuropsychiatric diseases and the need for a systems-level understanding that goes beyond single molecule-target interactions. Thus far, drug discovery approaches focused on target-based in silico or in vitro high-throughput screening (HTS) have had limited success because they cannot capture pathway interactions or predict how a compound will affect the whole organism. Organismal behavioral testing is needed to fill the gap, but mammalian studies are too time-consuming and cost-prohibitive for the early stages of …

Network Analysis Of Headache Diagnoses Using International Classification Of Headache Disorders, 3rd Edition, Pengfei Zhang, Thomas Berk

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The International Classification of Headache Disorders, Third Edition (ICHD-3), significantly influences clinicians' understanding of headache disorders. In this study, we aim to elucidate how the hierarchical structure of ICHD-3 shapes the understanding of interconnectivity among headache disorders.

METHODS: A network comprises elements known as "nodes," with the connections between them referred to as "edges." In our study, a node represents a headache diagnosis that meets at least one ICHD-3 diagnostic criterion of the ICHD-3. We developed two network models for ICHD-3: a non-hierarchical model, where edges are only formed by cross-references found within the text of diagnoses, …

Young Carers In Early Childhood— How Are Young Carers Represented In Broader Literature And What Factors Influence Dominant Representations Of Young Carers In Early Childhood In The Uk?: Scoping Review, Carly Ellicott, Alyson Norman, Helen Lloyd

School of Psychology

Contextualization of young carers in early childhood is complex. Biopsychosocial impacts of young caregiving are receiving growing interest, yet the voice and experience of society's youngest carers (0-5 years) remain absent from the literature. This scoping review explores representation of young carers in their early years (0-5 years), presented as part of a broader program of PhD research undertaken by the lead author. Aiming to influence systematic change in the way young carers are perceived and supported in society, further research is recommended. This will serve to better inform whole family support strategies in the context of young carer policy …

Utility Of A Hybrid Approach To The Hadronic Vacuum Polarization Contribution To The Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment, Christine Davies, Andreas Kronfeld, Gerard Lepage, Craig Mcneile, Ruth Van De Water Jan 2025

Utility Of A Hybrid Approach To The Hadronic Vacuum Polarization Contribution To The Muon Anomalous Magnetic Moment, Christine Davies, Andreas Kronfeld, Gerard Lepage, Craig Mcneile, Ruth Van De Water

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

An accurate calculation of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (LOHVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (aμ) is key to determining whether a discrepancy, suggesting new physics, exists between the Standard Model and experimental results. This calculation can be expressed as an integral over Euclidean time of a current-current correlator G(t), where G(t) can be calculated using lattice QCD or, with dispersion relations, from experimental data for e+e-→hadrons. The BMW/DMZ collaboration recently presented a hybrid approach in which G(t) is calculated using lattice QCD for most of the contributing t range, but using experimental data for the …

Plurality Of Countable Nouns In Chinese And Indonesian: Morphological And Syntactic Perspectives With Pedagogical Implications, Hatmi Idris

International Review of Humanities Studies

This study investigates the plural meaning and expression of countable nouns in Chinese and Indonesian from morphological and syntactic perspectives and explores implications for language pedagogy. Although both languages encode plurality, they employ distinct mechanisms, which may pose challenges for Indonesian learners of Chinese. Using a qualitative, literature-based approach, data were drawn from scholarly studies, Chinese teaching materials, and reference sources such as dictionaries. Analysis focused on morphological markers, including affixation and reduplication, as well as syntactic structures, such as numeral–classifier phrases and quantifiers constructions. The findings show that Chinese expresses plurality through the suffix –men, classifier-based syntactic patterns, …
