Disproportionality Of African Americans In Texas Special Education, Catherine Boggs, Jemimah Young
Disproportionality Of African Americans In Texas Special Education, Catherine Boggs, Jemimah Young
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
Research has indicated that historically, African Americans received disproportionate special education services (Fish, 2019; Sabnis et al., 2020; Sullivan & Osher, 2019; Watkins & Kurtz, 2001). This is specifically problematic in states and cities with smaller proportions of African Americans, such as Texas. Data indicate that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) remains non-compliant with the implementation of its Corrective Action Plan (CAP), which was issued federally by the Office of Special Education Programs due to restricting the percentage of students qualifying for special education (Morgan et al., 2023). The purpose of this study was to categorize, quantify, and examine the …

Language Teaching In Palestine: Leveraging Cultural Sustainability Through A Video Project, Layth R. Awwad, Imad Abu Dayyeh, Anita L. Bright
Journal of Multicultural Affairs
In recognition of the ways learners need to see themselves present within their curricula, and in response to the ongoing opportunity to leverage digital media, through this paper, we describe the creation, implementation, and refinement of a video project, included across multiple English language courses at Bethlehem University in the West Bank of Palestine. With cultural sustainability at the center, through qualitative methodology (Maxwell, 2013), and calling specifically upon sociocultural theory (Bakhtin, 1984) as well as figured worlds (Holland et al., 1998), we offer perspectives informed by a range of life experiences and standpoints. This study of what students and …

Non-Homologous Sequence Interactions During Meiosis: Meiotic Challenges And Evolutionary Opportunities., Beth L Dumont, Mary Ann Handel
Non-Homologous Sequence Interactions During Meiosis: Meiotic Challenges And Evolutionary Opportunities., Beth L Dumont, Mary Ann Handel
Faculty Research 2025
A hallmark of meiosis is pairing of homologous chromosomes, an event that ensures proper segregation into the gametes. Homology pairing is crucial to the formation of normal gametes, the maintenance of genomic integrity, and avoidance of aneuploidy. However, chromosomes are not completely homologous. Here we discuss two notable exceptions to homology: the mammalian sex chromosomes and centromeres. In themselves, these exceptions illustrate meiotic adaptations that both ensure correct chromosome segregation and present evolutionary opportunities. More broadly, such examples of non-homology provide a window for viewing normal mechanisms of meiotic pairing and chromosome modifications. Current analyses of mammalian meiotic chromosome dynamics …

Detecting skin cancer early and accurately is crucial for successfully treating this potentially fatal disease. Enhancing the accuracy of visual inspection techniques is often necessary to improve clinical decision-making and increase the chance of successful treatment outcomes. In this research, high-performance deep learning (DL) models for automated skin cancer categorization and early skin cancer diagnosis screening are developed and evaluated in conjunction with the discrete cosine transform (DCT). For this purpose, features are extracted from medical images using both techniques. The DCT is used for feature extraction and dimensionality reduction, while deep learning (DL) trains fully connected models for classification …
Staff Education To Improve Patient Outcomes And Treatment Compliance Through Use Of Motivational Interviewing In The Mental Health Setting, Rachel Nardi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Summary: Treatment noncompliance is a significant problem within the realm of mental health care. Recurrent noncompliance increases symptom severity, the likelihood of a crisis, and the burden placed on mental health care resources. Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice (EBP) demonstrated through extensive research to positively affect patient outcomes. Teaching MI to mental health care providers is one option organizational leaders can choose to address treatment noncompliance. In order for MI to become standard nursing practice, a method of education must be developed and implemented. This necessitates the identification of effective education delivery methods. A staff education project was …

N 6-Methyladenosine (m6A), the most abundant modification in eukaryotic messenger RNAs (mRNAs), has also been found at a low level in bacterial mRNAs. However, enzyme(s) that introduce m6A modification on mRNAs in bacteria remain elusive. In this work, we combine deep-sequencing approaches that identify m6A sites with in vitro biochemical studies to identify putative m6A methyltransferases that would modify Escherichia coli mRNAs. We tested four uncharacterized candidates predicted to encode proteins with putative methyltransferase domains, whose deletion decreased the m6A level. However, in vitro analysis with the purified putative methyltransferases revealed that none of them installs m6A on mRNA. Exposure …

Staff Education On Documentation For Hospice Registered Nurses, Sharon Spencer Cunningham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Summary Documentation is a part of a daily task that all nurses undertake. Its purpose is to provide validation of care rendered to patients. In the hospice setting, nurses’ documentation is crucial, as it supports whether a patient qualifies to receive hospice services. If proper documentation is not recorded, patients can lose services and organizations can face a loss of revenue and potential fines. At a hospice organization in the Southeast United States, there was little emphasis of the importance of documentation that adheres to guidelines set by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Therefore, nurses’ documentation lacked the …

Early widowhood is characterized by chronic stress and is associated with a higher risk of incident depression and cardiovascular-related morbidity and mortality. Peripheral inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of major depressive disorder and atherothrombosis and may represent a common mechanism underlying widow(er)'s elevated risk for both health conditions. Chronic psychological stress sensitizes the release of proinflammatory cytokines during the peripheral stress response. The present study examined whether recent spousal bereavement enhances the inflammatory response to an acute, psychological stressor. Recently widowed older adults (n = 143) and non-widowed controls (n = 69) participated in a quasi-experimental study, during which …

In a licensee holdover proceeding for a rent-stabilized apartment, the court granted the tenant's motion to stay the proceeding. The tenant, claiming succession rights to her deceased grandmother's tenancy, had an application pending before the DHCR. Despite the landlord's argument for concurrent jurisdiction and an expeditious determination, the court found no specific showing of prejudice by the landlord. The stay, granted under CPLR § 2201 to avoid duplicative adjudications, is conditioned on the tenant's timely payment of rent in ongoing use and occupancy, commencing June 2025. The stay will remain in effect until August 31, 2025, or a DHCR determination, …

Correcting for confounding variables is often overlooked when computing RNA-RNA correlations, even though it can profoundly affect results. We introduce CorrAdjust, a method for identifying and correcting such hidden confounders. CorrAdjust selects a subset of principal components to residualize from expression data by maximizing the enrichment of "reference pairs" among highly correlated RNA-RNA pairs. Unlike traditional machine learning metrics, this novel enrichment-based metric is specifically designed to evaluate correlation data and provides valuable RNA-level interpretability. CorrAdjust outperforms current state-of-the-art methods when evaluated on 25 063 human RNA-seq datasets from The Cancer Genome Atlas, the Genotype-Tissue Expression project, and the Geuvadis …

Leveraging Ai For Marketing Decisions: Algorithmic Targeting And Healthcare Applications, Annie Shi
Olin Business School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I leverage artificial intelligence (AI) for making effective marketing decisions, specifically on how to measure the causal effects of targeting promotions and detecting suspicious retail buyers of opioids. In the first chapter, we propose a novel approach in measuring the true causal effects of targeting promotions. Targeting promotions on online platforms are often determined by AI algorithms, which utilize extensive customer and seller information to generate various algorithmic scores for targeting. Effective targeting, however, will lead to selection bias when evaluating the causal effects of promotions. we analyzed 2,294 promotion experiments on a major online retail platform …
