Acute esophageal necrosis (AEN) is a rare syndrome, characterized by extensive circumferential necrosis of the esophageal mucosa at the gastroesophageal junction. AEN carries significant morbidity and mortality, and early recognition is crucial for management. We present a case series of AEN in two critically ill patients, one who presented with coffee ground emesis and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and the other one who presented with upper gastrointestinal bleed in the setting of malignancy and concurrent infection with active antibiotic use. Prompt diagnosis and management of both AEN and its underlying causes are crucial to improve patient outcomes.

Wrapped In The American Flag: Liberal Activism And Queer Political Organizing Post-1940s, Sam Markley
IdeaFest
By analyzing the United States Lavender Scare and immigration policy of the 1950s, this paper attempts to shed light on how the distinction between “American” and “Un-American” remains at the center of Queer rights advocacy. The heightened fear over the survival of the nation, along with the view of Queer immigrants as threats to the nation, was used to tighten immigration restrictions. This restriction, however, is complicated by existing prejudices against racial minorities and women. Queer rights groups began to rise to prominence during this time and mobilize against claims that they were anti-American or subversive deviants, working through the …

Using Remote Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Staff To Implement Augmented Competing Stimulus Assessments, Tanvi Pendharkar
Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences
Despite a growing number of Board Certified Behavior Analysts®(BCBA), there are many geographic regions without access to behavior analytic services. Remote training methods that can be implemented without face-to-face contact allow for behavior analytic services to reach areas without local BCBAs to provide services. One such method with promise for remote application is behavioral skills training (BST). BST consists of instructions, modeling, rehearsal, and feedback. BST has been used to train behavior-analytic service providers to implement a variety of procedures, but BST has yet to be used to teach clinicians how to conduct augmented competing stimulus assessments (A-CSA). …
The Effects Of Multiple Exemplar Instruction On A Bidirectional Naming Repertoire In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Madison Appelbaum
The Effects Of Multiple Exemplar Instruction On A Bidirectional Naming Repertoire In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Madison Appelbaum
Theses
Neurotypical children normally acquire language skills in their natural environment. However, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) typically require specialized interventions to acquire language and communication skills (Yoon et al., 2023). A behavior repertoire that has been shown essential for the fast and incidental acquisition of language in children is bi-directional naming (BiN). Multiple exemplar instruction (MEI) has been used to facilitate the acquisition of BiN in children with ASD. In the present study, we replicated and extended previous research (e.g., Yoon et al., 2023) to evaluate the effect of MEI on the emergence of BiN repertoire in three elementary …

Effects Of Self-Monitoring On Teachers’ Behavior-Specific Praise And Students’ Behavior In A Center-Based Classroom, Samantha Walsh
Theses
The current study explores the effects of self-monitoring on teachers' use of behavior-specific praise (BSP) and its impact on student behavior in a center-based classroom. Self-monitoring, a cost-effective and time-efficient intervention, has been proven effective in previous research for enhancing educator performance. However, previous studies have often combined self-monitoring with other interventions, leaving a gap in understanding its effects in isolation. This study aims to replicate the work of Justus et al. (2023) by examining the impact of self-monitoring on paraprofessionals in a center-based classroom with students aged 6-10. Using a multiple baseline design across participants, three paraprofessionals were trained …

Robust Embeddings Of Genetics, Anatomy, And State Decoded From A Neuron’S Activity, Aidan Schneider
Robust Embeddings Of Genetics, Anatomy, And State Decoded From A Neuron’S Activity, Aidan Schneider
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Neural spike trains are shaped by both extrinsic inputs and intrinsic structural constraints. While prior work has focused on how spike timing encodes externally driven variables, such as stimuli or behavior, this dissertation explores whether principles that organize neural activity in space and time—such as genetic cell type, anatomical location, and arousal state—are also embedded in the spiking output of individual neurons. I hypothesize that these organizing principles are not quenched as irrelevant variability, but rather multiplexed within the neural code itself. To test this, I attempt to decode these principles from the spike trains of neurons recorded in behaving …

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a risk factor for increased transfusions. However, various definitions of anemia have been described in scientific literature and a consensus on how to appropriately diagnose anemia or who to preoperatively optimize is lacking. We aimed to compare multiple anemia definitions and evaluate if any threshold best predicts transfusion requirements and surgical outcomes following spinal fusion.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 1-2 level posterior spinal fusions. Preoperative hemoglobin was defined based on preoperative laboratories within 28 days of surgery. Anemia was diagnosed using the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Society of Hematology (ASH), and …

The tenant moved for partial summary judgment on a laches defense in a non-payment proceeding, seeking to preclude a possessory judgment for arrears from 2020 to January 2023. The court found that the landlord's four-year delay in bringing the case was unexplained and that the landlord failed to provide proof of prior notice to the tenant for the arrears. The court also recognized prejudice to the tenant, a long-term resident, who would be unable to pay the large sum. Accordingly, the court granted the motion, barring the landlord from seeking a possessory judgment for any arrears before November 2022, but …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novobiocin Analogues As Potential Inhibitors Of Polymerase Theta Polθ In Dna Damage And Repair, Mohammed Essam Albuhluli
Theses and Dissertations
Killing tumors while leaving normal cells unharmed is the goal of precision cancer therapy, a challenging feat that is enabled by targeting tumor-specific vulnerabilities [1]. Targeting Polθ potentiates PARP inhibitors (PARPi) in specifically killing homology-directed repair (HDR)-deficient tumor cells and re-sensitize PARPi resistant tumor cells [1]. The induced essentiality between Polθ and HDR-deficiency underscores the value of Polθ as a therapeutic target in the context of tumors with HDR genetic mutations [1]. The helicase-like domain (HLD) is a super family 2 (SF2)-type domain with DNA-dependent ATPase activity [1]. We previously discovered that the antibiotic NVB acts as an inhibitor of …

In the 21st century, it is easy to locate a large group of population in U.S America. For society to thrive, a good intercultural relationship is a fundamental building block for societal advancement. However, individuals inherit cultural biases that discourages healthy intercultural relationships. Concepts like cultural humility aid in addressing the status quo. Cultural humility encourages lifelong learning and self-criticism of one’s view thereby acknowledging inherent bias. To remedy the status quo, cultural humility is introduced to intercultural communicators and individuals engaging in intercultural relationships.
