Reflection And Reimagination As Resistance: Towards Humanizing Critical Writing Pedagogy, Grace Y. Kang, Sonia M. Kline Aug 2025

Reflection And Reimagination As Resistance: Towards Humanizing Critical Writing Pedagogy, Grace Y. Kang, Sonia M. Kline

Language Arts Journal of Michigan

Given the pressures, demands, and standardization teachers face in our sociopolitically charged times, teachers need opportunities to reflect and reimagine their instruction. Drawing on critical and related scholarship, we conceptualize critical humanizing writing pedagogy. We share our instructional moves as teacher educators for enacting humanizing writing pedagogy in a graduate course and supporting teachers to enact humanizing writing pedagogy in their K-12 classrooms. Specifically, we show how a graduate student and practicing teacher found ways to shift toward critical orientations as she navigated her school’s curriculum and state standards. We argue that sociocultural and critical lenses provide powerful tools for …

Integrating Uas And Satellite Data To Improve Classification Of Plant Functional Types In A Forest Landscape, Sky Mae Gennette Aug 2025

Integrating Uas And Satellite Data To Improve Classification Of Plant Functional Types In A Forest Landscape, Sky Mae Gennette

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Remotely sensed land-use/land-cover (LULC) data products are an important tool for understanding landscape processes at all scales. The types of inference researchers can derive from remote sensing data depend on the quality and characterization of these LULC products. Currently, gaps in the detail of widely available vegetation cover products limit inference about processes at the level of plant functional type (PFT). Advanced remote sensing tools, machine learning, and data fusion can be employed to contribute novel methods to produce detailed, accurate vegetation cover products. Here, we combine high resolution Unoccupied Aerial Systems (UAS) multispectral, structural and textural data with large-scale …

Changes In Co-Activation And Lower Limb Stiffness During Prolonged Load Carriage, Matthew V. Robinett Aug 2025

Changes In Co-Activation And Lower Limb Stiffness During Prolonged Load Carriage, Matthew V. Robinett

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Overuse musculoskeletal injuries are a common, costly challenge for the armed services. A stiffer lower limb during routine prolonged load carriage tasks may be necessary to attenuate elevated ground reaction forces but further increases musculoskeletal overuse injury risk. Quantifying leg and joint stiffness provides comprehensive and joint level insight into the attenuation of ground reaction forces, and subsequent injury risk. But, it is currently unknown how prolonged load carriage affects leg, knee and ankle stiffness, and knee and ankle muscular activation. Purpose: This study sought to quantify leg, knee, and ankle stiffness, and the activation and coordination of associated …

How Plant-Soil Feedbacks At Varying Levels Of Plant Species Diversity Influences The Reestablishment And Performance Of Native Sagebrush Steppe Species, Sierra Santosuosso Aug 2025

How Plant-Soil Feedbacks At Varying Levels Of Plant Species Diversity Influences The Reestablishment And Performance Of Native Sagebrush Steppe Species, Sierra Santosuosso

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Increased frequency of wildfire has become a significant problem in the sagebrush steppe, altering soil biogeochemical properties that promote the establishment of invasives at the expense of native species. To reduce annual grass invasion, restoration efforts often include seeding with non-native bunch grasses such as Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn (crested wheatgrass [AGCR]) that outcompete cheatgrass; however, this strategy does not lead to the return of a native sagebrush steppe ecosystem. Restoring ecosystems to higher levels of native species diversity may reduce invasion and promote sustained success of restoration efforts since biodiversity can improve ecosystem functioning and promote resilience. In 2019 …

Engineering Properties And Stress-Strain Behavior Of Bcsa Concrete: Flexural Design Parameters, Strain Measurement Methods, And Models, Gabriel R. Johnson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement concrete has gained popularity due to advantages over portland cement (PC), including, its fast-setting, high early strength gain, high durability, and reduced global warming potential. Though primarily used for pavement repair, it has good potential for structural applications. Building codes like ACI 318:19 permit alternative cement materials like BCSA cement if they can be shown to have adequate and predictable structural, durability, and fire performance comparable to PC concrete. This study evaluates the structural and mechanical behavior of BCSA cement concrete, measuring standard engineering properties and comparing results to PC concrete and code prediction equations. …

All Works

Background: Chronic illness affects children’s health and disrupts the spatial and temporal aspects of schooling by complicating attendance, interrupting learning routines, and exposing institutional rigidity. While many educational systems treat chronicity as an exception to be managed, this review reconceptualizes it as a pedagogical and symbolic challenge to normative assumptions about inclusion, care, and participation. Objective: To systematically examine how school-based behavioral and psychosocial interventions support children and adolescents with chronic health conditions (CHCs) in inclusive educational settings and to analyze what these interventions reveal about institutional practices of care and recognition. Methods: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted a …

Properties Of A Class Of Analytic Functions Associated With Exponentially Convex Functions, K. R. Karthikeyan, Elangho Umadevi, G. Thirupathi, Dharmaraj Mohankumar

All Works

Studies in univalent function theory comprising the exponential of differential characterizations are rarely considered. The prominent study in this direction is the study of so-called α-exponentially convex functions. Here we study a class of analytic functions which satisfy an analytic characterization influenced by the definition of the multiplicative derivative and α-exponentially convex functions. Integral representation and coefficient inequalities of the defined function class are the main results of the paper.

Psilocybin And Death Anxiety: A Dual-Mechanism Approach To Existential Distress, Annabelle Swain Aug 2025

Psilocybin And Death Anxiety: A Dual-Mechanism Approach To Existential Distress, Annabelle Swain

University Honors Theses

This literature review looks at how psilocybin, the active compound in "magic mushrooms," can help people deal with death anxiety; the deep fear of dying or losing control that shows up in lots of mental health struggles. While traditional treatments like SSRIs and talk therapy work for some people, they don't always get to the root of the problem. Psilocybin works differently. It changes brain activity, especially in networks tied to repetitive, self-focused thinking, as well as creates powerful, emotional experiences that help people rethink how they see life and death. This paper covers recent research showing how one or …

Role Of Cellular Proteins In The Regulation Of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Gene Expression And Dna Replication, Joseph R. Heath

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a ubiquitous human pathogen that infects the majority of the human population. To facilitate infection, this virus relies on a combination of host and viral factors. Previous studies have revealed a number of host proteins that associate with the HSV-1 genome throughout infection but their putative role(s) in this process remain undefined. This study aims to examine two such proteins to determine their contributions to HSV-1 gene expression and DNA replication. The first of these factors is Ints3, a subunit of the Integrator complex. This protein complex functions in transcription regulation, and Ints3 …

Examining The Perspectives Of School Administrators Regarding The Participation Of Students With Disabilities In Career And Technical Education, Kerstin Wheeler

Education Doctoral

Research consistently indicates that career and technical education (CTE) programs offer significant benefits for students. Participating in CTE programs has been shown to improve academic performance, increase graduation rates, and support successful post-school outcomes for all students. While laws and regulations require clear and intentional post-secondary transition planning, participation in CTE among students with disabilities in New York State remains low, less than one in five take part. Using a phenomenological, qualitative design, this study applied Theoharis and Causton’s (2014) framework of Seven Steps to Inclusive Leadership Practices to add to the research the perspectives of school administrators on the …

Exploring Variability Of The Cg18562578 Methylquant Assay For The Forensic Discrimination Of Monozygotic Twins, Sydney E. Arnold

Student Theses

Monozygotic (MZ) twins possess identical DNA sequences, posing a problem for forensic scientists, as they are incapable of distinguishing MZ twins from each other using traditional DNA identification methods. However, the epigenomes of MZ twins will differ and might be used for their forensic discrimination. Here, we explored the variability of an assay previously developed by our laboratory that showed high discrimination potential for MZ twins using buccal swab DNA, cg18562578 MethylQuant. We measured precision at each step: bisulfite conversion, nested PCR, and qPCR, reproducibility, and repeatability. DNA methylation ratios were compared between two analysts carrying each step using the …

Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) Manuscripts

Effective communication between obstetric (OB) nurses and anesthesia providers is critical to ensure patient safety during epidural placements in labor and delivery (L&D) settings. At a large teaching hospital, communication gaps were identified when OB nurses requested anesthesia for epidural placements without consistently providing vital patient information. The lack of structured communication can result in important details being overlooked, which may lead to delays in care and potential patient harm. To address this, the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) communication framework was implemented to standardize and improve information exchange. This Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice (DNAP) project aimed to enhance …

Invisible Algorithms, Visible Outcomes: Roles Of Emotional Labor And Work Gamification In Gigs, Yali Zhang, Liaoliao Li, Xiaoyu Ma, Jun Sun, Yifei Dong, Zhaojun Yang

Information Systems Faculty Publications

As algorithm governance becomes increasingly crucial in gig economy ecosystems, understanding the behavioral impact of algorithmic transparency remains a key research gap. Using the stimulus-organism-response framework and uncertainty management theory, this study examines how platform algorithmic transparency affects gig workers’ in-role and extra-role service behaviors, with emotional labor acting as a mediator and work gamification as a moderator. Analyzing survey data from 325 ride-hailing drivers using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), the findings reveal that greater algorithmic transparency enhances both in-role and extra-role behaviors. Emotional labor mediates this relationship: deep acting strengthens both behaviors, while surface acting primarily …

Density Functional Theory Modeling Of Heterogeneous Reactions Of Hydrocarbon Intermediates On Silicon Carbide: Surrogate Kinetic Model Development For Chemical Vapor Infiltration, Atal Bhowmik

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates the decomposition mechanism of Methyl trichlorosilane during Silicon Carbide deposition from Chemical Vapor Infiltration to produce SiC-based ceramic matrix composites. High-performance applications require SiC-based materials; however, producing them presents difficulties due to limited deposition rates, high energy consumption, and uneven coatings. To overcome these challenges, the mechanism of SiC formation needed to be understood completely. Modeling surface reactions of decomposition on the substrate using Density Functional Theory is the key point of current research. By focusing on the adsorption, reaction, and desorption mechanisms that control SiC development, our method incorporates quantum mechanical models. Using Transition State Theory, …

When Opportunity Knocks, Do Dark Personality Traits Aid In Students’ Rationalization Of Academic Misconduct?, Jacqueline R. Strowd Aug 2025

When Opportunity Knocks, Do Dark Personality Traits Aid In Students’ Rationalization Of Academic Misconduct?, Jacqueline R. Strowd

Dissertations

Concerns about academic misconduct are receiving increased attention within academia due to a proliferation of advanced technologies and reports of the high prevalence with which students engage in misconduct. Contextual factors (e.g., peer acceptance, opportunity) appear to be stronger predictors of students’ propensity for academic misconduct than individual factors (McCabe & Trevino, 1997). The Fraud Triangle Theory (i.e., pressure, opportunity, rationalization) has been adapted to this context and provides a useful theoretical model for considering contextual factors (Cressey, 1973; Wolfe & Hermanson, 2004). Research integrating this theory with the Dark Triad (i.e., Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy) suggests that these traits may …

A Brief Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention For Emotion Regulationand Aggression In Justice-Involved Adolescents: Preliminary Outcomes From A Non-Randomized Trial In Short-Term Juvenile Detention, Cassidy L. Tennity Aug 2025

A Brief Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention For Emotion Regulationand Aggression In Justice-Involved Adolescents: Preliminary Outcomes From A Non-Randomized Trial In Short-Term Juvenile Detention, Cassidy L. Tennity

Dissertations

Justice-involved youth are at risk for a variety of psychosocial difficulties, including anger, aggression, and emotion regulation challenges. Short-term juvenile detention settings offer a unique opportunity to provide psychological interventions to youth before they are returned to the community or sentenced to long-term placements. However, implementation barriers within these settings often hinder the delivery of evidence-based care. This study developed and tested a brief, two-session anger management intervention for adolescents detained in a short-term juvenile detention center in the Southeastern United States, drawing on evidence-based practices from prior work with justice-involved youth. The present study examined implementation outcomes (i.e., feasibility, …

Test Driving Proximity Distances For Teacher Implementation Of Effective Instruction Delivery, Kenneth Joseph Ross Ii Aug 2025

Test Driving Proximity Distances For Teacher Implementation Of Effective Instruction Delivery, Kenneth Joseph Ross Ii

Dissertations

Student noncompliance can disrupt teacher instruction and affect students’ ability to learn in the classroom. Interventions can be provided to teachers within the PBIS tiered system to address noncompliance. One intervention that addresses noncompliance, Effective Instruction Delivery (EID), has been demonstrated to increase levels of compliance above baseline levels. Despite the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions such as EID, there are significant concerns with ensuring the feasibility of evidence-based interventions to match the needs of teachers in the classroom to reduce teacher burn-out. A possible strategy to promote high levels of fidelity is to allow teachers to test drive interventions before …

Optimal Hypergraph Connectivity With Cut Queries, Hang Liao Aug 2025

Optimal Hypergraph Connectivity With Cut Queries, Hang Liao

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Finding connected components in undirected hypergraphs—hypergraph connectivity—is a fundamental problem in computer science. It can be framed as a special case of Symmetric Submodular Function Minimization (SSFM), where the objective is to determine if the non-trivial minimizer is zero. This thesis develops an optimal algorithm for hypergraph connectivity within the $\CUT$ query model, where an algorithm probes a subset of vertices to learn the weight of the hyperedges ``cut" by that partition.

Our approach is constructive, culminating in an optimal algorithm for the general problem by first developing the necessary tools for two foundational subproblems. The main contributions of this …

This Autoethnographic dissertation uses autohistoria-teoria to critically analyze my lived curriculum as a Mexican-born raised in the borderland of the Rio Grande Valley. This research aims to understand the influence of my linguistic experiences on my cultural identity and teaching praxis within the same context. Drawing from Anzaldua’s (1987) concept of Borderlands as a contextual lens and Raciolinguistics as a theoretical framework, I examine and reflect on key linguistic experiences that have perpetuated colonizing linguistic practices rather than fostered linguistic diversity. Additionally, Culturally Linguistic Sustaining Pedagogy serves as a framework to critically analyze my teaching praxis in relation to my …

Barriers To Hispanic Post-Secondary Education In Science Fields, Luis Slayton Aug 2025

Barriers To Hispanic Post-Secondary Education In Science Fields, Luis Slayton

Theses and Dissertations

The study aimed to examine whether external barriers could be identified and are present throughout a Hispanic individual's educational life. The beliefs of the Hispanic community regarding education and the nature of acquiring an education could be relevant to the factors that impede the completion of high school. A survey approach was chosen as the methodology for the study due to the confidential nature of a questionnaire. Human nature tends to be more honest when not asked personal questions face-to-face. Additionally, there is potential to generalize attributes from a small sample to a larger population, allowing inferences about the identified …

A Diminished Alliance: The Effects Of French American Relations On The Leadership Of Washington, Adams, And Jefferson 1789-1809, Eric Christopher Carlson Aug 2025

A Diminished Alliance: The Effects Of French American Relations On The Leadership Of Washington, Adams, And Jefferson 1789-1809, Eric Christopher Carlson

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the relationship between the United States and France during the first three presidencies and how it influenced the leadership and decision-making of Washington, Adams, and Jefferson. Throughout the thesis, it is argued that the most critical developments in the United States during these presidencies were connected to diplomatic relations with the French along with each leaders own private, but often public, perceptions of the French. The two decades that these three leaders were in office witnessed significant transformation in U.S.-French relations, especially as the French Revolution spiraled into a full-scale European conflict that threatened American neutrality. In …

The Impact Of Positive Psychology Use Upon Gls Outcomes For People With Chronic Pain Syndromes, Timothy Michael Curtis Aug 2025

The Impact Of Positive Psychology Use Upon Gls Outcomes For People With Chronic Pain Syndromes, Timothy Michael Curtis

Theses and Dissertations

The essence of being human is realized by our discovery of meaningful purpose throughout each important stage of our lives. If we perceive that we lack this meaningful purpose in our lives, it could become a distressful source of suffering to our sense of well-being emotionally, cognitively and perhaps, spiritually. A strong indicator of well-being comes from a good evaluation we ascertain as to how well we believe outcomes in our lives are consistent with our goals and values, which is also known as satisfaction with life. Research findings indicate that the more someone experiences repeated negative life events, the …

Arginine Vasotocin And Corticosterone In Nesting And Non-Nesting Loggerhead Sea Turtles In X’Cacel-X’Cacelito Sanctuary, Krista Blair Reed Aug 2025

Arginine Vasotocin And Corticosterone In Nesting And Non-Nesting Loggerhead Sea Turtles In X’Cacel-X’Cacelito Sanctuary, Krista Blair Reed

Theses and Dissertations

Sea turtles exhibit distinct behaviors before and after egg laying, however, not all individuals successfully oviposit. Some females display disruptions in their typical nesting behavior, returning to the water without laying eggs, which is referred to as a non-nesting emergence (NNE). NNEs can be due to external disturbances on the beach, but why they occur is often unclear. Arginine vasotocin (AVT) is a neuropeptide involved in various physiological processes, including stimulating smooth muscle contraction of the oviduct to facilitate egg deposition in nesting sea turtles. On the other hand, corticosterone is the primary stress hormone in sea turtles and is …

Comparative Analysis Of Sequential And Non-Sequential Modeling Techniques For Ddos Attack Detection With Explainable Ai, Vincent Agbenyeavu

Theses and Dissertations

Cybersecurity is known today as one of the greatest challenges of the modern era. Among the various types of cyber-attacks that threaten our security, the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack is among some of the most common, effective, and well-recognized attack strategies. Since this form of attack is meant to disrupt the availability factor covertly, it can be detrimental to the targeted machines and difficult to discover. Because of that, there have been several approaches, as well as solutions that have been devised to detect it as accurately and efficiently as possible. In this study, four sequential data modeling …
