Opa1-Mediated Mitochondrial Dynamics In Myogenic Differentiation Of C2c12 Myoblasts, Daniel Eloy Bazan
Opa1-Mediated Mitochondrial Dynamics In Myogenic Differentiation Of C2c12 Myoblasts, Daniel Eloy Bazan
Theses and Dissertations
Mitochondria play a pivotal role in metabolic energy production, cellular signaling, and apoptosis. To carry out these key cellular roles, mitochondria dynamically balance their organization through opposing including fusion and fission processes. The balance between mitochondrial fusion and fission is regulated by key proteins such as OPA1 (optic atrophy 1) and OMA1 (overlapping activity with metalloprotease). More recently, mitochondria have been increasingly revealed to play key roles in cellular differentiation, where metabolic demands are reprogrammed. This study aims to elucidate the specific roles of OPA1 and OMA1 in the differentiation of C2C12 myoblast cells into myotubes.
Our data demonstrates that …

Machine Learning Applications For Evaporation Predictions From Small Reservoirs: Potential Water Savings For Lower Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Syed Muhammad Fahad Abdullah
Theses and Dissertations
Local-scale reservoirs are important to regional water balance, but these are often overlooked. This study presents a robust machine learning (ML) approach leveraging reanalysis datasets to estimate daily evaporation for local-scale reservoirs in semi-arid South Texas. Selected models were trained with daily lake evaporation model (DLEM) estimates and used climatic and reservoir-specific properties as feature input variables. The multi-reservoirs training approach ensured applicable model generalization. Results show promising predictive performance with R² values ranging from 0.55–0.67 (testing) and 0.64–0.78 (validation), NSE values ranged from 0.54 0.67 (testing) and 0.64–0.78 (validation), and RMSE values ranged between 1.52–1.80 mm/day (testing) and 1.22–1.58 …
Low-Cost Monitoring And Fingerprinting Of High-Powered Electric Systems, Kwabena Buamono Aboagye-Otchere
Low-Cost Monitoring And Fingerprinting Of High-Powered Electric Systems, Kwabena Buamono Aboagye-Otchere
Theses and Dissertations
Electric motors are vital to industry, transport, and energy, yet their maintenance challenges persist. While traditional reactive maintenance leads to costly downtime and safety risks, predictive maintenance, especially through IoT and machine learning offers early fault detection and operational efficiency. However, this shift introduces security concerns due to unintended magnetic emissions from motors. These emissions, though useful for non-intrusive monitoring, can be exploited to eavesdrop on sensitive industrial processes. This dissertation explores the dual nature of magnetic emissions: their value in motor diagnostics and their potential as a security vulnerability. It demonstrates how emissions can identify motors, monitor health, and …

Computational Calculations On Zno (0001) And Zno (1010) Surfaces With And Without Pd Adatoms, Amit Aich
Theses and Dissertations
In this research work, first-principles density functional theory (DFT) was used to study O-terminated, Zn-terminated ZnO (0001) surfaces and non-polar ZnO (1010) surfaces. Both clean surfaces and those with Pd or PdO adatoms were examined. Adsorption was considered at O, Zn and hollow sites. After structural relaxation, we analyzed the electronic, optical and adsorption properties. The O-terminated ZnO (0001) surface has a larger band gap of 0.76 eV and p-type conduction. The Zn-terminated surface has a smaller band gap of 0.15 eV and shows n-type behavior. Pd adsorption modifies ZnO’s electronic structure in a site-dependent manner. On O-terminated surfaces, it …

Investigating The Multiple Enzyme Complex In The Carotenoid Biosynthesis Pathway, Mercy Mormor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In nature, plant carotenoids are 40-carbon isoprenoids with polyene chains that may have double bonds. They are vital components of all photosynthetic organisms, playing several roles in the plant cell, including photosynthesis, pigmentation, phytohormone synthesis, signaling and photoprotection. In this study, we investigated protein-protein interactions among key enzymes involved in the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway using the Bimolecular Fluorescent Complementation (BiFC) assay. Our results revealed several interactions that suggest a coordinated regulation of enzymatic activity within this pathway, highlighting potential regulatory complexes that influence carotenoid production. The study also highlights the pivotal role of Zeta-Carotene Isomerase (Z-ISO) as a key regulatory …
Performance And Feasibility Of Pasture Rangeland And Forage Insurance In The Delta Region, Walker Bradley Davis
Performance And Feasibility Of Pasture Rangeland And Forage Insurance In The Delta Region, Walker Bradley Davis
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite being available nationwide since 2016, enrollment in Pasture, Rangeland, and Forage (PRF) insurance remains low in many regions of the country. The program's performance also presents regional discrepancies, with loss ratios varying significantly. Studies that have simplified the complexity of interval selection for producers have been shown to positively affect PRF enrollment. Such studies remain limited in several forage-producing areas. This study aims to address the lack of information in Arkansas specifically. Arkansas has among the nation's lowest participation rates and loss ratios. Low loss ratios signal that participants pay more in premiums than received in indemnities and may …
Climate Change Denial Messages As Post-Truth, David H. Kahl Jr., Ahmet Atay
Climate Change Denial Messages As Post-Truth, David H. Kahl Jr., Ahmet Atay
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
Post-truth messages are hegemonic forms of communication intentionally designed to create false narratives that perpetuate power and marginalize others. These messages make differentiating fact from fiction difficult. Students are especially susceptible to believing and internalizing post-truth messages due to their high level of interaction with social media and the neoliberal period in which they have been raised. One type of post-truth message that has become especially prevalent is climate change denial messages that advance a neoliberal agenda. This article will apply tenets of critical communication pedagogy (CCP) as a means by which to recognize messages that deny climate change as …
Critical Communication Pedagogy At The End Of The World, Tyler S. Rife
Critical Communication Pedagogy At The End Of The World, Tyler S. Rife
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This essay draws upon my experiences teaching the undergraduate course, “Communication at the End of the World,” to argue for an approach to critical communication pedagogy (CCP) contextualized by and reflexively responsive to planetary-scale ecological crises. I outline how five commitments have come to guide my classroom’s explorations through our topic of “end-times” communication: (1) Anthropocentrism and speciesism participate in the maintenance of social hierarchy; (2) environmental justice and social justice are intimately entangled projects; (3) ecological crisis is (re)made concrete, embodied, proximal, and implicative; (4) critique of language involves critique of humanism and humanist historicization; and, (5) ecologically just …
Transgressing Linguistic Supremacy: Reimagining Public Speaking Through Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Sergio Fernando Juárez
Transgressing Linguistic Supremacy: Reimagining Public Speaking Through Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Sergio Fernando Juárez
Journal of Communication Pedagogy
This essay reimagines public speaking education through a culturally sustaining and transgressive lens that challenges dominant norms of language, professionalism, and communication competence. It critiques the ways in which public speaking courses often reinforce linguistic supremacy by privileging standardized English and marginalizing multilingual and culturally grounded speech practices. Drawing on concepts such as translanguaging, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP), and transgressive pedagogies, the author calls for a shift in pedagogy that centers students’ lived experiences, community-rooted knowledge, and linguistic norms. Rather than asking students to conform to hegemonic standards, this approach empowers them to speak on their own terms, resist assimilationist …
Using Equivalence-Based Instruction And Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Social Skills, Alexander Orzeck
Using Equivalence-Based Instruction And Behavioral Skills Training To Teach Social Skills, Alexander Orzeck
Theses
Social skills are an integral part of human life, so it stands to reason that teaching methodologies should be developed to instruct people in this complex topic. One method to teach social skills has been behavioral skills training, in which the four-step sequence of vocal and written instruction, modeling, roleplay, and feedback exposes learners to the social concepts until a mastery criterion is reached. Skills relevant to socialization have also been taught with equivalence-based instruction, in which the concept of stimulus equivalence is employed to generate novel relations between stimuli for the purpose of teaching some skill. No instance was …

Succinctness Meets Transparency A Linking Framework Combining Hyrax And Kzg, And Its Applications, Argha Sardar
Succinctness Meets Transparency A Linking Framework Combining Hyrax And Kzg, And Its Applications, Argha Sardar
Master’s Dissertations
The thesis begins by introducing the concept of zero knowledge and exploring its various paradigms. It then focuses on a interesting problem: the construction of linking proofs. Chap- ter 2 addresses the challenge of binding two distinct polynomial commitment schemes so that they are consistent at a common evaluation point. The chapter further introduces a method for equating two different polynomials with different domains using an affine line construction. By applying certain optimizations to the bulletproofs protocol, the work achieves a reduction in both the prover’s time and the number of rounds required for proving a large committed inner product. …

Outsourcing, Labor Market Frictions, And Employment, Mayara Felix, Michael B. Wong
Outsourcing, Labor Market Frictions, And Employment, Mayara Felix, Michael B. Wong
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We estimate the labor market impacts of Brazil’s 1993 outsourcing legalization us-ing North-South variation in pre-legalization court permissiveness, and comparing security guards to less-affected occupations. We find that outsourcing legalization persistently reallocated jobs from older incumbent guards to younger entrants. Total employ-ment of guards and their entry from informality persistently increased, while average demographic-adjusted wages remained constant. Meanwhile, a wave of occupational layoffs displaced some incumbent guards from high-wage firms. The evidence suggests that the rise of non-core activity outsourcing reduced labor market frictions, facilitated by firm-level economies of scale in human resources and spillovers to non-adopting firms.

College Application Mistakes And The Design Of Information Policies At Scale, Tomás Larroucau, Ignacio A. Rios, Anaïs Fabre, Christopher Neilson
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We examine whether large-scale information interventions can improve college application outcomes in a centralized admissions system. Using nationwide surveys from Chile, we document widespread information frictions and frequent application mistakes, such as omitting attainable preferred programs or failing to include safety options. To address these frictions, we partnered with the Ministry of Education to implement a large-scale field experiment that provided applicants with personalized information on admission probabilities and program characteristics through customized online platforms. The intervention increased the probability that previously unmatched students received an assignment by 44% and improved placement into higher-ranked programs by 20%. Building on these …

Sccosmix: A Mixed-Effects Framework For Differential Coexpression And Transcriptional Interactions Modeling In Single-Cell Rna-Seq, Anderson Bussing, Giampiero Marra, Daping Fan, Russell Shinohara, Danni Tu, Yen-Yi Ho
Faculty Publications
Advancements in single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) technologies generate a wealth of gene expression data that provide exciting opportunities for studying gene-gene interactions systematically at individual cell resolution. Genetic interactions within a cell are tightly regulated and often highly dynamic in response to internal cellular signals and external stimuli. Evidence of these dynamic interactions can often be observed in scRNA-seq data by examining conditional co-expression changes. Existing approaches for studying these dynamic interaction changes in scRNA-seq data do not address the multi-subject hierarchical design commonly considered in single-cell experiments. In this paper, we propose a Mixed-effects framework for differential Coexpression and transcriptional …

Using Geomorphic Change And Sediment Modeling To Calculate Debris Flow Volumes From The 2020 El Dorado Wildfire In The Southern San Bernardino Mountains, California, Sevag Injean
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Four years after the occurrence of the 2020 El Dorado Fire, Yucaipa Ridge and the surrounding communities of Oak Glen and Forest Falls still experience the devastation caused by debris flows. Wildfires can instigate a series of events leading to hydrophobic soils, loss of vegetation, and increased sediment availability which amplify post-fire debris flow risks. This study tested the hypothesis that post-wildfire geomorphic changes can be accurately quantified and predicted using high-resolution LiDAR-derived digital elevation models. To investigate this hypothesis, multi-temporal LiDAR datasets were analyzed to quantify geomorphic changes, including erosion and deposition, within two severely burned basins in the …

Medical Surveillance In Custodial Jsas: Preventing Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure, Kiara Gadea
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Custodians play an important role in maintaining our surroundings safe and sanitary. However, in doing so, they are their exposure to health hazards that put them at risk, yet these exposures are often overlooked. One major risk they face is contact with bloodborne pathogens, which put custodial staff at risk for infections such as hepatitis B. While Job Safety Analyses (JSA’s) outline various protective measures, many fail to incorporate medical surveillance as part of their risk management program. Overlooking this important detail leaves custodians vulnerable to health risks that can be prevented.
Adding a medical surveillance section to custodial JSA’s, …
