There is a certain duality to the role of librarians in higher education as the job requires preparing students for their current academic work, such as doing research for writing papers, while at the same time preparing students for their future professional information work. Librarians seeking guidance on teaching information literacy more comprehensively are left to study the professional standards of the targeted professional group, and find or carry out research on these practitioners. Synthesizing and translating these findings into instructional approaches while staying true to existing information literacy standards, however, can be challenging. In this chapter we demonstrate how …
A Tale Of Two Toxicants: Investigating The Interaction Between Hexavalent Chromium And Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid., Morgan Elizabeth Delnicki
A Tale Of Two Toxicants: Investigating The Interaction Between Hexavalent Chromium And Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid., Morgan Elizabeth Delnicki
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are environmental contaminants of major public health concern. Despite commonly being found together in contaminated drinking water, no studies have considered the concomitant health effects of Cr(VI) and PFAS, specifically perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). In vitro studies using CHO cells assessed the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of Cr(VI) and PFAS both individually and in combination. Intracellular and extracellular Cr levels were measured with Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. PFOS was found to exacerbate Cr(VI) induced cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Additionally, a novel in vivo model of studying the hepatotoxicity of Cr(VI) was established. Adult Hartley …
Exploring Hexavalent Chromium Exposure And Lipid Accumulation In Liver Disease., Gabrielle Celine Griffin
Exploring Hexavalent Chromium Exposure And Lipid Accumulation In Liver Disease., Gabrielle Celine Griffin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of MASLD has doubled over the past 20 years and continues to rise. Hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], a top chemical hazard in U.S. drinking water, is emerging as potential risk factor for liver disease. To study the impact of Cr(VI) and high-fat diet on MASLD, we developed an in vivo model using Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to Cr(VI) in drinking water (0, 0.05, or 0.1 mg/L) and fed normal or high-fat diet for 90 days. High-fat diet significantly increased body mass, plasma lipoproteins, cholesterol, liver injury, and hepatic triglycerides, which were exacerbated by Cr(VI) exposure. Cr(VI) alone increased hepatic chromium …
Trauma Network Design Considering Patient Safety And Cost., Lin Lin
Trauma Network Design Considering Patient Safety And Cost., Lin Lin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Trauma, as the leading cause of mortality and morbidity for those under the age of 45 in the US, incurs trillions in annual economic costs. The time-sensitive nature of trauma treatment necessitates an effective, coordinated regional trauma system to optimize patient safety. However, the financial burden associated with trauma care, especially due to low-insured population, presents a significant challenge to the financial health of trauma centers (TCs). To address critical challenges in this domain and provide much-needed insights to trauma decision-makers regarding their trauma system cost, network design, and subsidy policy, this dissertation proposes 3 contributions. First, we introduce an …
Analysis Of An Ethanol Sensitive Bmp-Nkx2.3-Fgf Signaling Pathway In Pouch Morphogenesis., Hieu Dai Le Vo
Analysis Of An Ethanol Sensitive Bmp-Nkx2.3-Fgf Signaling Pathway In Pouch Morphogenesis., Hieu Dai Le Vo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Craniofacial malformations lie at the heart of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). While there is growing evidence for a genetic component to FASD, little is known of the cellular mechanisms underlying these ethanol-sensitive loci in facial development. Bone Morphogenetic Protein (Bmp) signaling pathway dependent pouch formation is a key mechanism in facial development. We have previously shown that multiple Bmp mutants are sensitized to ethanol-induced facial defects. However, ethanol does not directly impact Bmp signaling. This suggests that downstream effectors, like nkx2.3 and Fibroblast Growth Factor (Fgf) signaling, may mediate the impact of ethanol on Bmp mutants. Here, I …
Integrating Bulk And Single-Cell Transcriptomics To Investigate Intratumor Heterogeneity, Shuai Guo
Integrating Bulk And Single-Cell Transcriptomics To Investigate Intratumor Heterogeneity, Shuai Guo
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Cancers are heterogeneous mixtures of tumor and surrounding cells, where each component comprises multiple distinct sub-types and/or states. Understanding the cell-type-specific contributions is critical for advancing cancer biology, yet high-throughput expression profiles from tumor tissues only represent combined signals from all diverse cellular sources. Bulk deconvolution with single-cell/nucleus (sc/sn) RNA-seq data has emerged as a powerful approach to dissect both cellular composition and cell-type-specific expression patterns, yet the technological discrepancy across sequencing platforms limits accuracy.
To systematically evaluate the impact of platform discrepancies on bulk deconvolution, we first generated a benchmark dataset of 24 healthy retinas with paired bulk and …

Chronic Cluster Headache Is A Rare Disease: Implications For Diagnosis, Treatment And Public Health, Hsiangkuo Yuan, Jan Hoffmann, Elena Ruiz De La Torre, Michael J. Marmura, Mario F. P. Peres
Department of Jefferson Headache Center Papers and Presentations
Cluster headache (CH) is a rare and painful primary headache disorder characterized by severe unilateral pain and cranial autonomic symptoms. This perspective examines the epidemiological evidence supporting the classification of chronic cluster headache (CCH) as a rare disease, noting a prevalence of CH of approximately 124 per 100,000 individuals, with only 3.5-13.7% manifesting CCH. This prevalence meets criteria established by both the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency for rare disease designation. The rarity of CCH creates substantial clinical and research challenges, including prolonged diagnostic delays, limited research funding and a dearth of approved treatments. The economic …

The market for wearable devices has seen significant growth in the last decade and is only expected to increase as the world enters a new age of health literacy known as digital health literacy. Digital health literacy, or eHealth literacy, is defined as “the ability to seek, find, understand, and appraise health information from electronic sources and apply the knowledge gained to addressing or solving a health problem.” The issue with this new age is that most consumers have access, but lack the ability to apply the knowledge that they must improve their health. The goal of this study is …
Saliva & Circadian Rhythm In Medical Profiling For Early Disease Prevention, Joseph Lewis
Saliva & Circadian Rhythm In Medical Profiling For Early Disease Prevention, Joseph Lewis
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Circadian rhythms affect almost every biological process from hormone secretion, gene expression, immune regulation, and metabolism. Studies show that disruption to these internal rhythms through irregular sleep, artificial sleep, and irregular sleep can significantly increase risk for chronic disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, neurodegeneration, and cancer. Saliva presents a viable alternative for capturing biomarkers found through blood or cerebrospinal fluid, offering substantial utility for diagnostic and chronobiological profiling. Saliva contains hormones such as cortisol and melatonin while containing inflammatory markers that fluctuate rhythmically throughout the day. Due to its ease of collection, saliva is well suited for longitudinal monitoring, …
Investigation Of Wireless Communication Sub-Optimizing Factors And Ai-Based Optimization For Ber Reduction, Lalan Jee Mishra
Investigation Of Wireless Communication Sub-Optimizing Factors And Ai-Based Optimization For Ber Reduction, Lalan Jee Mishra
Theses and Dissertations
The increasing demand for high-throughput, low-latency, and reliable wireless communication has led to significant advancements of cellular wireless technologies since the early ‘80s. However, in dynamic and interference-prone environments—particularly those involving Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)—signal degradation due to pathloss, multipath propagation, co-channel interference, and weather-induced attenuation continues to undermine performance. These factors contribute to elevated bit error rates (BER), inefficient spectrum usage, and unreliable communication links, thereby limiting the practical utility of wireless systems in aerial applications. Traditional mitigation techniques, while effective under certain conditions, often fail to adapt to rapidly changing wireless environments. This shortcoming underscores the need for …
One Step Closer To Greater Understanding! Does A Correlation Exist Between Fluid Intelligence And Player Rank In League Of Legends?, Evan Miller
Dissertations
Chess, one of the oldest modern games, has long been a model domain for expertise research. In comparison, research on video games has historically been influenced by moral panic. Cycles of moral panic tend to revolve around preconceived notions of threats, held at a societal level (typically by older generations). Politicians, quick to capitalize, then advocate for policy change based upon their constituents’ fears. Concurrent media reports draw further attention to the issue, amplifying the perception of harm. As the panic escalates, pressure is placed on scientific communities to perform confirmatory (not exploratory) research. This fundamentally biased approach to research …

Anisotropic Object-Based Shifts Of Attention Arise From Unequal Influences Of Visual Field Meridians On Neural Attention Gradients, David H. Hughes, Adam J. Barnas, Adam S. Greenberg
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Object-based attention prioritizes the processing of information appearing within a selected object. We previously showed an object-based shift direction anisotropy (SDA) whereby horizontal shifts are more efficient than vertical shifts (Barnas AJ, Greenberg AS. Atten Percept Psychophys 78: 1985–1997, 2016; Barnas AJ, Greenberg AS. Vis Cogn 27: 768–791, 2019), an effect modulated by the visual field meridians (Barnas AJ, Greenberg AS. Q J Exp Psychol (Hove) 77: 2516–2532, 2024). Our present aim was to understand how the functional brain mechanisms of attention give rise to the SDA. We hypothesized that the SDA arises from attentional resources being partitioned differently by …

In this rejoinder we address 13 concerns elicited by our invited commentary “An update on the scientific evidence for and against the legal banning of disciplinary spanking.” In addition to defending assertions made in the initial commentary, we make several new substantive arguments. In response to dissenters’ equating of non-experimental evidence against spanking with nonexperimental evidence against smoking, we demonstrate that the two are very dissimilar. We question the purpose of spanking bans, providing stronger evidence that they do not seem to prevent child abuse. We review Canada’s association with the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) …

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas [L.] Lam) is a globally important crop known for its high yield, adaptability, and rich nutritional profile. Sweetpotatoes are especially high in β-carotene, a provitamin A carotenoid that is vital for vision, immune function, and skin health, making them effective in combating vitamin A deficiency in vulnerable populations. Purple-fleshed sweetpotatoes are particularly recognized for their very rich antioxidant nutrition, which includes significantly high levels of phenolic compounds such as many types of phenolic acids, flavonoids, and anthocyanins. Regular consumption of sweetpotato has been associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, …
Spatio-Temporal Beam-Level Traffic Forecasting In 5g Wireless Systems Using Multi-Task Learning, Israel E. Tommy
Spatio-Temporal Beam-Level Traffic Forecasting In 5g Wireless Systems Using Multi-Task Learning, Israel E. Tommy
All Theses
Accurate beam-level traffic forecasting is critical for 5G wireless network optimization, yet is challenged by inherent data sparsity and multi-scale temporal patterns. This thesis presents a novel Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU)-based Multi-Task Learning (MTL) framework with ensemble enhancement for spatio-temporal traffic prediction. The approach used shared representations to jointly perform classification and regression, making it more effective than traditional methods at handling beam-level traffic prediction. Through systematic evaluation of six machine learning models (Linear Regression, DLinear, XGBoost, Echo State Network, Long Short-Term Memory, and GRU-MTL) across three sequence lengths (168/24/8-hour), we demonstrated that: (1) the proposed MTL approach outperformed conventional …

Emotional Pathways To Trauma: Racialized Policing And Psychological Distress In Black Adolescent Males, Rochelle S. Parrish
Emotional Pathways To Trauma: Racialized Policing And Psychological Distress In Black Adolescent Males, Rochelle S. Parrish
All Theses
Introduction: Black American males, including adolescents, are disproportionately subjected to aggressive policing, often without criminal wrongdoing (Geller et al., 2014; Sewell et al., 2016). These encounters are frequently described as traumatic, marked by fear, loss, and emotional disruption (Smith Lee & Robinson, 2019). Whether direct or vicarious, such experiences can produce lasting psychological effects, particularly among Black boys who face compounded vulnerability from racialized surveillance and community-level trauma (DeVylder et al., 2018; Smith & Patton, 2016). Proactive policing tactics, such as investigatory stops and verbal aggression, have been linked to symptoms consistent with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), including hypervigilance, avoidance, …

AbstractThe launch of the powerful generative AI tool ChatGPT in November 2022 sparked a wave of fear across higher education. The tool could seemingly be used to write essays and do other work without students putting in the effort expected of them. In this paper, Jamie Herman and Henry Lara‐Steidel posit a way of addressing the concerns over ChatGPT and increasingly powerful generative AI tools in the classroom by first examining what exactly, if anything, widespread AI use undermines in education. That question, they argue, is logically prior to the question of what to do or how best to embrace …

Data-Driven Koopman Theory For Transient Stability And Safety Analysis Of Power Systems With Renewable Penetration, Bhagyashree Umathe
All Dissertations
This dissertation presents a novel approach to analyzing and controlling nonlinear systems using the Koopman operator framework and data-driven methods. Nonlinear power systems, characterized by complex behaviors and sensitivity to initial conditions, pose significant challenges for stability and safety assessment, especially during transient events.
The first part of this work focuses on reachability analysis using the spectral properties of the Koopman operator. By leveraging eigenfunctions extracted from sampled trajectory data, the approach computes forward and backward reachable sets efficiently, even in high-dimensional nonlinear systems, without requiring dense state-space sampling. This method is validated through numerical examples, demonstrating its ability to …
Considering The Concept Of Law In The Legal Singularity, Matthew Tse
Considering The Concept Of Law In The Legal Singularity, Matthew Tse
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This review article engages with the idea of a ‘‘legal singularity”, which has been developed by Abdi Aidid and Benjamin Alarie in their book, The Legal Singularity: How Artificial Intelligence Can Make Law Radically Better.
The legal singularity describes a legal system in the future that harnesses algorithmic computation to facilitate a ‘‘stable and complete legal order, capable of addressing and resolving practically all types of legal uncertainty in real time and on demand”. Aidid and Alarie believe algorithmic computation will achieve this promise in an interdependent dual process. On one hand, algorithms will structure the law with conceptual standardization. …

Given the challenges currently facing early childhood science education, this exploratory study investigates the advantages of outdoor learning as part of a teacher preparation program. A group of 49 pre-service early childhood education teachers participated in a day-long outdoor learning experience embedded within their science methods course. Guided by the theoretical lens of embodied cognition, we employed a case study approach to collect and analyze qualitative survey data, using both categorizing and connecting strategies to explore participants’ experiences. The findings reveal four key themes related to pre-service teacher perceptions, in that outdoor learning: (1) represented an engaging experience, (2) contributed …
The Effect Of An Acute Bout Of Rock Climbing On Cognitive Functioning And Cortisol Levels, Vanessa Steigauf
The Effect Of An Acute Bout Of Rock Climbing On Cognitive Functioning And Cortisol Levels, Vanessa Steigauf
All NMU Master's Theses
Rock climbing is an understudied physical activity (PA) that demands active decision-making, integration of sensory and visual input, and continuous regulation of nervous system activity to produce complex motor outputs. The unique psychological demands of climbing warrant studying its effect on cognition and brain health. I recruited 26 generally healthy adults for a randomized-controlled study. Climbing experience, PA and perceived stress were self-reported. Each participant was randomly assigned to a climbing (10x2 minutes climb, moderate intensity) or control group (seated, watching climbing-related video). The primary outcomes, cognitive performance and salivary cortisol levels were assessed by the Stroop test. A linear …
Low-Level Memory Attacks On Edge Assisted Robotic Applications, William Arnold
Low-Level Memory Attacks On Edge Assisted Robotic Applications, William Arnold
Master of Engineering Theses
This thesis investigates how low-level memory faults can undermine edge-assisted robotic systems that rely on memory optimization. As robots are utilized in real world applications, the ability to operate safely and successfully in mission critical deployment becomes important. To help achieve these goals, developers are increasingly starting to place computation nodes at network edges to meet latency and reliability requirements. Edge nodes, however, are resource-constrained and resources conservation techniques such as Kernel Same-page Merging (KSM) are enabled to deduplicate identical pages across processes or virtual machines. This thesis shows that this optimization technique quietly widens the attack surface and can …

Are We Safe Yet? Experimental Analysis Of Emergency Post-Alert Messages, Hugh D. Walpole, Jeannette Sutton, Michele K. Olson
Are We Safe Yet? Experimental Analysis Of Emergency Post-Alert Messages, Hugh D. Walpole, Jeannette Sutton, Michele K. Olson
Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, and Cybersecurity Faculty Scholarship
Wireless Emergency Alerts can offer timely warnings and crucial guidance for people at risk from natural and technological hazards. However, at the time an alert is issued, it is rarely clear how long hazardous conditions will persist and when affected people can return to normal activities. This highlights the potential benefits of issuing post-alert messages to indicate that the hazard has passed; yet in practice, these post-alert messages are rarely used. When they are used, they frequently use operational language focused on the status of the associated alert (i.e. “the alert has expired” or has been “canceled”) rather than information …
Dialogic Instruction: Teachers Can Have Their Cake, And Eat It, Too, Rebecca L. Lee
Dialogic Instruction: Teachers Can Have Their Cake, And Eat It, Too, Rebecca L. Lee
Language Arts Journal of Michigan
Dialogic instruction is a talk-intensive approach to learning and teaching that is student-centered and discussion-based, promoting collaboration and academically productive conversations. Recently, educators across the country have increased the amount of time spent preparing students for standardized assessments, which often reduces teaching and learning to test preparation. While this tension suggests that teachers must choose between good teaching or good test scores, dialogic instruction is a promising practice that can enhance students’ reading comprehension outcomes while centering student choice and valuing student voice. Research shows dialogic instruction is most effective when teachers a) co-create a conducive classroom climate, b) incorporate …
