Background: Parkinson’s Disease (PD) can include physical signs and possibly cognitive impairment, resulting from the convergence of pathologicalprocesses involving dopaminergic dysfunction, accumulation ofalpha-synuclein, cholinergic deficits, and disruption of otherneurotransmitter systems. We used screening tests to evaluate thecharacteristics of cognitive performance in patients with PD and to assess their validity compared tothe Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Methods: This is a natural history study of participants with PD and controls screened for possible cognitive impairment using the MoCA, Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT), and King-Devick (KD). The groups were compared on performance and then factors associated with cognitive performance (age, diagnosis, and …

Tropical forests are a dominant regulator of the global carbon cycle, exchanging more carbon dioxide with the atmosphere than any other terrestrial biome. Climate models predict unprecedented climatic warming in tropical regions in the coming decades; however, in situ field warming studies are severely lacking in tropical forests. Here we present results from an in situ warming experiment in Puerto Rico, where soil respiration responses to +4 oC warming were assessed half-hourly for a year. Soil respiration rates were 42-204% higher in warmed relative to ambient plots, representing some of the highest soil respiration rates reported for any …
The Political Theories Of The Legal Realists, Dan Priel
The Political Theories Of The Legal Realists, Dan Priel
All Papers
A popular view about the legal realists is that, either knowingly or inadvertently, they advanced ideas inconsistent with traditional values, democracy, and the rule of law. Another view about them suggested that the realists had no political theory: they only offered a descriptive (empirical) theory of adjudication, albeit one that has normatively “quietist” implications. In this essay, I challenge both views. I argue that there were two legal realist camps whose jurisprudential ideas presupposed two quite different political theories. One group of legal realists consisted of public utilitarians who were consciously inspired by Bentham, wanted to turn legal and political …

Simple Summary: This review was conducted to highlight current and potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in the care of patients with head and neck cancer, the barriers to its clinical implementation, and the relative scarcity of research in this field. While AI has demonstrated success in other areas of oncology, its role in head and neck cancer remains limited, with progress slowed by technical, ethical, and logistical challenges. Nevertheless, integrating AI with multiomics approaches presents a promising opportunity to advance precision medicine in this patient population. The findings presented in this manuscript may encourage further multi-institutional studies aimed at …

Disinformation As Ground-Shifting In Great-Power Competition, Sorin Adam Matei
Disinformation As Ground-Shifting In Great-Power Competition, Sorin Adam Matei
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
Disinformation, distinct from misinformation, replaces accepted principles of objectivity and verifiability with novelty, framing, authority, self-reference, and conformity to create a new “truth paradigm.” This article introduces a novel definition and framework for understanding disinformation as a strategic tool in great-power competition. It includes a review of case studies, such as Russian disinformation campaigns during the Russia-Ukraine War and analyzes cognitive biases and social behaviors that facilitate the spread of disinformation. Policy and military practitioners will find actionable insights into countering disinformation, including its sociopsychological mechanisms and proposed targeted counterstrategies to protect the integrity of information flows in defense and …
War Fighting: The Case Of Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas Bruscino
War Fighting: The Case Of Ulysses S. Grant, Thomas Bruscino
The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters
This article argues that American military professionals must focus on war fighting in publishing about military history to bring their unique military perspectives to the study of war. Most writing on military publishing offers general encouragement without providing focus to military writers. This article uses the historical example of American professional military writing and teaching from the American Civil War to World War II about General Ulysses S. Grant to demonstrate the value of analyses focusing on war fighting, especially relative to popular and academic histories of Grant’s military leadership. This study’s conclusions will assist future US military writers and …

Quantum Chemical Studies, Characterization And Understanding The Inhibition Effect Of Pulicaria Jaubertii Oil, Growing In Yemen, As A New Eco-Friendly Inhibitor For C38 Steel Corrosion In 1 M Hcl Medium, A. Al Maofari, Y. Otifah, M. Benmessaoud, S. El Hajjaji
Baghdad Science Journal
The inhibitive action of Pulicaria Jaubertii essential oil (PJEO), as green inhibitor, has been investigated on the carbon (C38) steel corrosion in 1 M HCl by using inductively coupled plasmas spectrometry (ICP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization and gravimetric measurements. The increasing of oil concentrations increases the carbon steel corrosion resistance (The inhibition efficiency), which rose to 94% in the optimal concentration (2.5 g/l). The specimen surfaces were analysed by using Infra-Red spectroscopy (IR) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM). The obtained results showed the presence of oil molecules adsorbed onto the specimen surface. Langmuir adsorption model was followed by …
Rutger Bregman’S Vision: Moral Ambition Without Imagination, Vladimir Snurenco
Rutger Bregman’S Vision: Moral Ambition Without Imagination, Vladimir Snurenco
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
This review critiques Rutger Bregman’s top-down blueprint—higher taxes, new laws, and big-ticket nonprofits—as a centralized moralism that sidelines the institutions that actually nurture prosperity and dignity: family, church, enterprise, and local associations. I contrast Bregman’s Robin-Hood rhetoric (and his School for Moral Ambition) with a subsidiarity-driven vision rooted in Tocqueville, Kuyper, and Nisbet, and with Michael Pakaluk’s call for vocation within business. Drawing on research by Owen Zidar (the “stealthy wealthy”) and The Millionaire Next Door, I argue Bregman caricatures the rich and misunderstands how wealth is created.
I also question his nonprofit model: celebrating outputs (money raised, nets distributed) …
A Comparison Of Whole-Brain Dose During Stereotactic Radiosurgery For Multiple Metastases Across Technology Platforms, Alonso Gutierrez
A Comparison Of Whole-Brain Dose During Stereotactic Radiosurgery For Multiple Metastases Across Technology Platforms, Alonso Gutierrez
All Publications
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is now the gold standard radiation technique for the treatment of multiple brain metastases. By virtue of its targeting accuracy, SRS, relative to whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT), maximizes both the likelihood of tumor ablation while minimizing irradiation (injury) of the uninvolved brain. The extent to which the latter objective is accomplished varies among radiosurgery platforms. In this study, we used a standardized imaging dataset taken from a patient with 10 random brain metastases to calculate the radiation dose delivered to the uninvolved normal brain across a range of modern SRS delivery platforms. This analysis reveals that irradiation of …

Your primary care physician can conduct regular screenings and track cognitive changes; however, patients may need to advocate for and request testing. If there is noticeable loss in cognitive function, you may benefit from a more accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan or care plan from a medical specialist. Detecting cognitive changes early is better than knowing too late.

Phragmites australis (common reed or simply “phragmites”) is a tall-statured, highly productive wetland grass. It spreads rapidly, often displacing native plants and degrading critical habitat for shorebirds and waterfowl by reducing the availability of nesting, loafing, and foraging areas. Phragmites also consumes large amounts of water, adding pressure to already scarce water resources. Additionally, the accumulation of standing dead biomass can be a fire hazard. Phragmites makes large areas of wetlands inaccessible to both wildlife and humans. This guide provides guidance on managing phragmites.

A landlord commenced a "no grounds" holdover proceeding against a tenant. The landlord moved to amend its petition and the "Good Cause Eviction Law" (GCEL) notice, citing new grounds for eviction. The tenant cross-moved for summary judgment, arguing the GCEL notice was not attached to the predicate notice and was defective. The court granted the landlord's motion to amend the petition but denied amendment of the predicate GCEL notice, reaffirming that predicate termination notices are non-amendable. As compliance with GCEL notice provisions is a condition precedent, the court granted the tenant's cross-motion, dismissing the proceeding without prejudice due to the …

Proliferative retinopathy is a leading cause of irreversible blindness in humans; however, the molecular mechanisms behind the immune cell–mediated retinal angiogenesis remain poorly elucidated. Here, using single-cell RNA sequencing in an oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) model, we identified an enrichment of sorting nexin (SNX)-related pathways, with SNX3, a member of the SNX family that is involved in endosomal sorting and trafficking, being significantly upregulated in the myeloid cell subpopulations of OIR retinas. Immunostaining showed that SNX3 expression is markedly increased in the retinal microglia/macrophages of mice with OIR, which is mainly located within and around the neovascular tufts. Myeloid cell-specific deficiency …

Over the past 20 years, the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) have gained significant interest. While AI has been implemented to various degrees in several disciplines, its unique applications in head and neck cancer (HNC) remain underdeveloped. This narrative review examines the existing body of literature regarding the use of AI in HNC. Studies to date have demonstrated AI’s utility across multiple phases of the HNC treatment continuum. Despite its promise, integrating AI into clinical practice faces several challenges, including concerns about system integrity, generalizability, privacy, and bias. In this review, we address these challenges and offer insights into future …
