Do No Harm?: An Assemblage Of Care, Compliance, And Resistance To North Carolina’S Parents’ Bill Of Rights, Sarah Cornette, William Pryor Iv Nov 2025

Do No Harm?: An Assemblage Of Care, Compliance, And Resistance To North Carolina’S Parents’ Bill Of Rights, Sarah Cornette, William Pryor Iv

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

North Carolina’s Parents’ Bill of Rights (NC-PBOR) requires school counselors to disclose sensitive student information to parents, creating profound legal-ethical dilemmas. This study examines how counselors navigate these mandates through interviews, surveys, and arts-based analysis. Findings show counselors experience institutional betrayal, ethical precarity, and emotional exhaustion, yet also engage in subtle resistance through strategic ambiguity, relational buffering, and quiet noncompliance. Methodologically, we integrate coding, poetic inquiry, and visual confection to capture affect, embodiment, and contradiction often missed by conventional analysis. By foregrounding emotion and multiplicity, we contribute to assemblage-informed policy studies and queer qualitative inquiry, while bearing witness to the …

On The Indispensability Of Natural Law On The Moral Theory Of The State, David W. Bolton Nov 2025

On The Indispensability Of Natural Law On The Moral Theory Of The State, David W. Bolton

Liberty University Journal of Statesmanship & Public Policy

Natural Law is widely regarded as a set of universal moral standards in which the acknowledgement of the differences between right and wrong are inherent in people, not created by society or lawmakers. It is based on the consistent nature of man as opposed to varying cultural standards and is unchanged by time or circumstance. Many thinkers throughout history have offered their educated opinions on the matter of Natural Law and the moral theory of the State. The Social Contract theory of the Modern Secular thinkers of the 17th century was considered a break with classical and traditional Christian …

Qpie Mathematics — Resonance Fields For Coherence: Defensive-Publication Abstract & Introduction, Teddy Burroughs Nov 2025

Qpie Mathematics — Resonance Fields For Coherence: Defensive-Publication Abstract & Introduction, Teddy Burroughs

Defensive Publications Series

QPIE (Quantum Perspective Is Everything) extends the Streltsov–Singh–Dhar–Bera–Adesso (2015) program that operationally links quantum coherence and entanglement by introducing a triadic, time-explicit, and observer-inclusive information field. Where classical resource theory defines coherence as a static scalar derived from density matrices and bounded by monotonicity/convexity under incoherent operations, QPIE formalizes coherence as a dynamic resonance process among system (S), ancilla (A), and observer (O). The framework adds three core constructs: (i) observer-weighted monotonicity, admitting constructive feedback when the observer’s informational state aligns with the system; (ii) holo-convexity, which generalizes linear convexity to account for emergent cooperative order across ensembles; and (iii) …

Automatic Gui Generation Based On Layered Queries For Interaction With Ai, Raviteja Govindaraju, Ramprasad Sedouram Nov 2025

Automatic Gui Generation Based On Layered Queries For Interaction With Ai, Raviteja Govindaraju, Ramprasad Sedouram

Defensive Publications Series

Conversational interface (UI) for artificial intelligence (AI) assistants typically uses text or speech and, as such, presents some cognitive load. The UI can be unintuitive for complex queries, leading to frustratingly long to-and-fro conversations. For sophisticated tasks, the UI can lack expressivity, forcing users to use long text prompts over multiple conversational turns. This disclosure describes techniques that enhance and simplify interactions with AI assistants using automatically generated graphical elements that enable a user to manipulate and weigh particular parameters in their input queries. Two modes of user input are defined - text mode and graphical mode - with easy …

Dual-Spectrum Multi-Layer Holographic Projection System With Shadow-Based Positional Sensing For Interactive Spatial Computing, Lorenzo Lbn Bernardini Nov 2025

Dual-Spectrum Multi-Layer Holographic Projection System With Shadow-Based Positional Sensing For Interactive Spatial Computing, Lorenzo Lbn Bernardini

Defensive Publications Series

The present invention discloses a revolutionary dual-spectrum multi-layer holographic projection system that fundamentally redefines the paradigm of human-computer spa- tial interaction by eliminating the necessity of wearable apparatus while simultaneously enabling tactile manipulation of volumetrically-rendered virtual objects. The system achieves this through an innovative architectural decoupling wherein visible-spectrum multi-projector arrays generate stratified holographic imagery across multiple depth planes, while a parallel infrared sensing subsystem performs continuous shadow-pattern analysis to extract precise three-dimensional positional information of the user within the interac- tion volume. This spectral bifurcation resolves the fundamental paradox inherent in prior art wherein projection and sensing mechanisms interfere through …

Experiences Of Formerly Incarcerated College Minority Men Criminalized For Behavioral Issues, Francine Zysk Nov 2025

Experiences Of Formerly Incarcerated College Minority Men Criminalized For Behavioral Issues, Francine Zysk

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The school-to-prison pipeline, where minority men experience decreased academic performance, higher truancy rates, and increased vulnerability to arrest, persists in the United States. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how systemic racism is experienced by formerly incarcerated, college-educated Black men who were criminalized for behavioral issues that contributed to their incarceration. The research problem was a lack of knowledge of the experiences of educational environments and disciplinary systems that perpetuate racialized behavioral labeling and contribute to the school-to-prison pipeline. Grounded in the theoretical framework of institutional racism, the study featured a constructivist paradigm to capture participants' experiences. …

Access Denied: An Argument Against King’S Propositional Access Principle, Jesse Fitts Nov 2025

Access Denied: An Argument Against King’S Propositional Access Principle, Jesse Fitts

Philosophy Faculty Research

Accounts of propositions face a problem that originates in the ontology of numbers: If propositions are abstract and causally isolated, then it’s unclear how agents cognitively access them. Jeff King presents a solution to this problem for his theory of propositions. King’s solution follows from a more general principle of cognitive access, which this paper challenges.

Anonymity And Social Pressure: A Sociological Analysis Of Lolcows On Kiwifarms, Mary R. Smith Nov 2025

Anonymity And Social Pressure: A Sociological Analysis Of Lolcows On Kiwifarms, Mary R. Smith

Honors Theses

This research assesses the website KiwiFarms using a mixed-methods approach, including content analysis and descriptive statistics, to determine whether demographic factors, such as weight, disability, and sexuality, influence an individual’s susceptibility to online trolling for others' entertainment.

The study found that most disproportionately targeted group was found to be overweight females. Meanwhile, Kiwi Farms users were found to be predominantly male, aged 18-24, and reside in the United States. The study's results indicate that the expressions of anomie on KiwiFarms are predominantly disciplinary, suggesting that KiwiFarms users mainly focus their criticism on rule violations rather than targeting individuals based on …

The Stress Parents Face When Their Autistic Child Turns 21, Everetta Joyce Irene Davis Nov 2025

The Stress Parents Face When Their Autistic Child Turns 21, Everetta Joyce Irene Davis

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

This exploratory study examined the lived experiences of parents whose autistic children turned 21 and aged out school and services provided by the federally funded Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) program. Although researchers have conducted numerous studies on autism, limited research has focused specifically on the stress parents face when their autistic child turns 21 and loses access to FAPE. The purpose of this qualitative narrative inquiry was to gain a deeper understanding of the emotional, logistical, and systemic challenges these parents encountered during the transition out of high school. Family Systems Theory provided the conceptual framework for exploring these …

Evaluation Of Functional Communication Training With Sign Mands For Non-Vocal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hayley Margaret Mcmanus Nov 2025

Evaluation Of Functional Communication Training With Sign Mands For Non-Vocal Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hayley Margaret Mcmanus

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often experience difficulties in both vocal and non-vocal communication, which can lead to problem behavior as a means of expressing needs and wants. Functional communication training (FCT) has been shown to be effective in teaching functional communicative responses (FCRs) and decreasing problem behavior. However, studies on the use of sign language as a communicative response or modality in FCT have been limited, despite its benefits, including feasibility and low response effort, compared to other modalities, such as picture cards and augmentative and alternative communication devices. This study evaluated FCT using sign language mands for …

Students’ Solutions To Student Problems: A Participatory Assessment Of Student-Centric Approaches To Common Classroom Conflict At Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Ernest Ogbozor, Katie Lopez, Claudia Cornejo Happel, Dome Klonggumrai, Jillian Brown

Publications

Classroom conflict between students and instructors, as well as among students, is a phenomenon that significantly impacts student academic engagement, performance, and emotional well-being; yet, it is often overlooked. Conflicts may result from poor attendance, lack of participation, unclear grading policies, miscommunication, and technology-related disruptions, and are frequently addressed through top-down course policies that exclude student perspectives. This research is a participatory assessment of common classroom conflict and student-centered approaches at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU). The purpose of the study is to examine students’ solutions to classroom conflicts in comparison to prevailing faculty-led course policies. Using participatory research (PR) methodology …

Cardiac Sr-Mitochondria Contacts-Impact On Cardiac Physiology And Mitochondrial Fitness, Celia Fernandez-Sanz, Shey-Shing Sheu, Sergio De La Fuente Nov 2025

Cardiac Sr-Mitochondria Contacts-Impact On Cardiac Physiology And Mitochondrial Fitness, Celia Fernandez-Sanz, Shey-Shing Sheu, Sergio De La Fuente

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

In adult cardiomyocytes, within the Mitochondrial Associated Membranes (MAMs), the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and mitochondria juxtapose each other, forming a unique and highly repetitive functional structure throughout the cells. These SR-mitochondria contact sites have emerged as critical structures that regulate various physiological processes, including lipid exchange, calcium (Ca2+) communication, control of excitation-contraction bioenergetics coupling, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Over the years, several scientific studies have reported the accumulation of diverse proteins within these SR-mitochondria close contacts. Some proteins strategically accumulate in these areas to enhance their function, such as the mitochondrial Ca2+ uniporter, while others …

Epigenetic Landscape In Lysosomal Storage Disorders: Mechanisms And Modulation, Andrés Felipe Leal, Harry Pachajoa, Shunji Tomatsu Nov 2025

Epigenetic Landscape In Lysosomal Storage Disorders: Mechanisms And Modulation, Andrés Felipe Leal, Harry Pachajoa, Shunji Tomatsu

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Lysosomal storage disorders (LSDs) are rare substrate-accumulating diseases primarily characterized by mutations in genes encoding proteins involved in lysosomal function, most of which have enzymatic activity. Resulting lysosomal dysfunction leads to the overaccumulation of non- or partially degraded substrates. While it is true that enzyme deficiency is the primary cause of LSDs, the epigenetic alterations in DNA methylation, miRNA expression, and histone modifications appear to be critical mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of LSDs. As epigenetic marks are, in most cases, reversible, their study becomes vital to developing strategies aimed at reversing epigenome alterations. Although classical therapeutic alternatives aim to …

The Lived Experience Of U.S. Law Enforcement Officers And The Challenges They Face While Investigating Sexual Assault Victim Reports, Ariekan Josephs-Greene Nov 2025

The Lived Experience Of U.S. Law Enforcement Officers And The Challenges They Face While Investigating Sexual Assault Victim Reports, Ariekan Josephs-Greene

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Sexual assault is a pervasively dangerous crime affecting persons of all ages, races, and genders, both in the United States and globally. Essential in the safeguarding of American citizens, U.S. law enforcement officers are among the first responders on scene to investigate reports of sexual assault claims. However, echoed in previous research are the sentiments of victim-survivors who experienced negative encounters with officers who exhibited an implicit lack of victim-centered training and were dismissive in their investigative approach. Consequently, this gap in the literature requires exploration; therefore, this study focuses on the lived experiences of U.S. law enforcement officers and …

It’S Different: Examining The Effect Of Hrm Investments On Employee Downsizing Following Mergers And Acquisitions, Pingshu Li, Mengwei Li, Hyesook Chung, Clint Chadwick Nov 2025

It’S Different: Examining The Effect Of Hrm Investments On Employee Downsizing Following Mergers And Acquisitions, Pingshu Li, Mengwei Li, Hyesook Chung, Clint Chadwick

Management Faculty Publications

Although some scholars in strategic human resource management (SHRM) research have suggested that HRM investments can be effective in reducing the negative repercussions of employee downsizing, other scholars have argued that such HRM investments could convey contradictory messages to employees, resulting in more negative employee reactions and decreased firm performance. In this research, we addressed this unsettled question by looking into the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) context, where we theorized that the acquiring firm’s HRM investments can positively moderate the negative effect of employee downsizing on firm performance by invoking positive sensemaking processes from remaining acquired firm employees. Moreover, the …

How Law Enforcement Officers’ Perceived Public And Self-Stigma Predicts Their Willingness To Seek Mental Health Services, Elizabeth Mae Mooney Nov 2025

How Law Enforcement Officers’ Perceived Public And Self-Stigma Predicts Their Willingness To Seek Mental Health Services, Elizabeth Mae Mooney

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The work of previous researchers has shown officers to have higher rates of depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety, and suicidality than the public, and a lower rate of mental health service-seeking. Stigma, both public and self-stigma, has been revealed by previous researchers to be the predominant barrier that deters officers from seeking out needed and/or desired services. A gap in research existed in examining alternative service types, and whether law enforcement officers perceived these service types as more or less stigmatizing than traditional methods. This study employed a quantitative research design to predict the probability that law enforcement …

Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists, as potent immunostimulatory adjuvants, play a critical role in linking the innate and adaptive immune responses. However, their antitumor effects as cancer immunotherapeutic agents have been limited. Here, we report our finding that manganese ion (Mn2+) potentiates various TLR agonists, leading to robust activation of the TLR pathway and the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway among innate immune cells. In particular, we have observed robust antitumor efficacy after intratumoral administration of a TLR3 agonist and Mn2+. To achieve systemic codelivery of TLR3 agonist and Mn2+, we have developed a low-molecular-weight poly(inosinic:cytidylic acid)-Mn2+ coordination lipid nanoparticle …

Bridging Reason And Perception: Searching For The Arguments Of Ptolemaïs Of Cyrene In Works On Music Theory From The Italian Renaissance, Sean Robert Denby Nov 2025

Bridging Reason And Perception: Searching For The Arguments Of Ptolemaïs Of Cyrene In Works On Music Theory From The Italian Renaissance, Sean Robert Denby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Ptolemaïs of Cyrene is the earliest known female music theorist from antiquity. Her lost work, Pythagorean Elements of Music, is a substantive addition to the debate on the differences in approaches to reason and perception in harmonic science from Pythagorean and Aristoxenian doctrines. It only survives in three quotations in Porphyry of Tyre’s Commentary on Ptolemy’s Harmonics, a work known and used by humanists and music theorists alike in the Italian Renaissance. Considering that numerous individuals in Renaissance Italy—in particular, Franchino Gaffurio, Gioseffo Zarlino, and Vincenzo Galilei—had access to Porphyry’s Commentary, it is a mystery as to why she does …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background/objective: Patients often expect antibiotics for self-limiting diseases, pressuring providers to prescribe antibiotics unnecessarily. These expectations also contribute to the unsafe practice of taking antibiotics without a prescription (non-prescription use), such as pills retained from prior prescriptions or antibiotics from non-medical sources. Previous work shows that non-prescription use is due to strong, widely held misconceptions regarding the curative power of antibiotics. To reduce unnecessary use of antibiotics, we developed and pilot-tested a patient-focused, bilingual (English and Spanish) educational tool with patient and provider stakeholder input. The tool, a trifold brochure, included information on safe antibiotic use, potential antibiotic harms and …

The cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-Stimulator of Interferon Genes (cGAS-STING) pathway is an important DNA-sensing mechanism that increases T cell trafficking and activation in tumors and reverses the immunosuppressive phenotype of myeloid cells. Therefore, direct STING targeting using synthetic cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs) is an attractive strategy for treating lymphocyte-depleted and myeloid cell-enriched tumors, such as glioblastoma (GBM). However, inadequate bioavailability and poor cellular accumulation limit the clinical development of CDNs, particularly for noninvasive administration strategies. Spherical nucleic acids (SNAs) have emerged as promising modular constructs for creating therapeutic lead compounds for many diseases, including different forms of cancer. Here, we report the …
