Advocate Nurses Collaborate For Stronger Legal Shields Against Workplace Violence, Susan Morby Msn, Rn, Nea-Bc, Sarah Gilmore Bsn, Rn

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Background/Introduction

Healthcare workers (HCW) face disproportionately high rates of workplace violence (WPV) and are five times more likely to be injured than other types of workers (Lim et al., 2022). HCWs account for 73% of all nonfatal workplace injuries in 2018 (OSHA, 2020). National studies show that 12% of nurses planning to leave the profession in the next 5 years cite WPV as the reason (Smiley et al., 2025). Despite implementation of security measures, WPV continues to escalate, contributing to burnout and workforce attrition (The Joint Commission, 2018).

Purpose or Objective

This initiative aimed to expand legal protections for all …

Patient Identification: Call Check Connect, Antoinette Fox Bsn, Rn, Nicole Calderon Bsn, Rn Nov 2025

Patient Identification: Call Check Connect, Antoinette Fox Bsn, Rn, Nicole Calderon Bsn, Rn

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Background: Lack of staff participation in verifying correct patient in conversations via phone or in-person has led to an increase in patient safety events within our site.

Local problem: While receiving telemetry monitoring, a patient experienced sustained bradycardia (slow heart rate). When the concern was initially escalated to the care team, there was confusion regarding which patient was experiencing the clinical decline. The lack of use of the high reliability tool read/repeat back and patient identifiers lead to a delay in escalation to the clinician and a clinical intervention delay. Ultimately leading to a major safety event.

Method: The safety …

Implementing Blood Culture Collection Education For Emergency Department Nurses, Michelle Atkinson Bsn, Rn, Pbt, Tncc, Jessica Verenski Msn, Rn, Ecrn, Tncc, Cen

Nursing Research & Professional Development Conference

Background: One of the most common nursing procedures in the emergency department is blood specimen collection. Blood specimen collections are used for diagnosis and treatment. Incorrect collection of blood cultures leads to redraws, which delays patient care and treatment. A lack of adequate training among emergency department staff has resulted in errors in specimen collection.

Local Problem: There was a lack of education provided for emergency department teammates for proper collection of blood cultures. This led to incorrectly collecting blood cultures. Improper blood culture collection resulted in high contamination rates in 2023 (goal is less than or equal to 2.3%). …

Sigma-Hole-Supported Interactions In Complexes Of Group 5 Oxyhalides (Mox3) With Insights For Their Extended Solids, Donovan Hoilette Jr., Gabriel F. Stewart, Kelling J. Donald

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The existence and nature of sigma hole type interactions in inorganic extended solids remain largely unexamined, even though the influence of such interactions for heteroorganic compounds is well known. The series of group 5 MOX3oxyhalides are intriguing in this regard since several of the known crystal structures are molecular solids with highly polarized M centers. We examine computationally the bonding in the isolated MOX3 molecules and their smallest clusters (MOX3)nwhere M = V, Nb, and Ta, and X = H, F, Cl, Br, and I. That investigation provides us with substantial evidence, based …

Assessing The Role Of Ai In Determining The Necessity And Proportionality Of The Exercise Of Self-Defense Against An Armed Attack, Marco Roscini Nov 2025

Assessing The Role Of Ai In Determining The Necessity And Proportionality Of The Exercise Of Self-Defense Against An Armed Attack, Marco Roscini

International Law Studies

This article explores whether artificial intelligence (AI) constitutes an asset or rather a challenge in assessing the necessity and proportionality of a State’s response to an armed attack in the context of self-defense. Two central arguments are advanced. First, while AI may assist in detecting incoming threats of armed attacks, abstract and highly context-driven notions like necessity and proportionality would be very difficult to encode into algorithms. Second, even assuming that this were possible, relying on AI to determine the necessity and proportionality of a self-defense response would present as many challenges as it does advantages and, therefore, should be …

The Impact Of Childhood Adversities On Prison Misconduct: A Study Based On General Strain Theory, Ellen Brefo Agyei Nov 2025

The Impact Of Childhood Adversities On Prison Misconduct: A Study Based On General Strain Theory, Ellen Brefo Agyei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Drawing on General Strain Theory, this study examines how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) shape the choice of coping mechanisms of inmates within correctional settings. While prior research has explored prison misconduct, little research has looked at the relationship between ACEs, negative emotions, and prison misconduct. To address this gap, this study uses the nationally representative dataset, Survey of Prison Inmates (SPI) conducted in 2016, to explore how ACEs affect prison misconduct and whether negative emotions mediate this relationship. Findings from the regression analyses suggest that inmates who experienced more ACEs experienced higher levels of negative emotions and were more likely …

The Interrogation Of An Accountability System Blind To Inequities, Deartis Barber Nov 2025

The Interrogation Of An Accountability System Blind To Inequities, Deartis Barber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the geography of educational inequality in Shelby County, Tennessee, arguing that where students live and attend school is not random but the outcome of historical, socioeconomic, and political forces that shape access to opportunity. Using secondary data from state, federal, and U.S. Census sources, the study employs tract-level stepwise linear regression and Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping to investigate whether “place is destiny” for public school students. Results reveal a powerful and persistent relationship between socioeconomic need and educational outcomes. The Socioeconomic Need Index (SNI) is the strongest predictor of academic underperformance, chronic absenteeism, and lower accountability …

Presidents, Opinions, And Independent Officers, Jed Handelsman Shugerman Nov 2025

Presidents, Opinions, And Independent Officers, Jed Handelsman Shugerman

Faculty Scholarship

The Opinions in Writing Clause is a persistent textual problem for the claim that Article II implies an indefeasible removal power: If the Framers believed they had given the president an unconditional removal power, why would they also specify a lesser power merely to ask for opinions? New historical research confirms this textual problem was also contextual: early state constitutions, the Ratification debates, and the First Congress indicate that the Opinions Clause’s original public meaning signaled independence of department heads, or at least the possibility of congressional requirements like good cause.

Legal scholars have already shown that the texts of …

Rasburicase Repercussions: Methemoglobinemia And Hemolytic Anemia In An African American Male With Undiagnosed Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase Deficiency, Nathan Fletcher, Kamakshi Katwala, Mitali Roy

Advocate GME

Introduction Rasburicase, a recombinant urate oxidase, effectively lowers nephrotoxic uric acid levels in tumor lysis syndrome (TLS). However, its use produces oxidative byproducts that can precipitate hemolysis and methemoglobinemia in patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD). Although G6PD screening is recommended prior to use in high-risk populations, emergent presentations often preclude timely testing. We report a rare case of simultaneous rasburicase-induced methemoglobinemia and hemolytic anemia in a patient with previously undiagnosed G6PD deficiency. Case Presentation: A 74-year-old African American man with an indeterminate plasma cell dyscrasia and chronic kidney disease presented with 24 hours of abdominal pain, nausea, and emesis. Initial …

Low Mutation Rate But High Male-Bias In The Germline Of A Short-Lived Opossum, Yadira Peña-García, Richard J Wang, Muthuswamy Raveendran, R Alan Harris, Paul B Samollow, Jeffrey Rogers, Matthew W Hahn

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Age and sex have been found to be important determinants of the mutation rate per generation in mammals, but the mechanisms underlying these factors are still unclear. One approach to distinguishing between alternative mechanisms is to study species that reproduce at very young ages, as competing hypotheses make different predictions about patterns of mutation in these organisms. Here, we study the germline mutation rate in the gray short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica, a laboratory model species that becomes reproductively mature at less than 6 mo of age. Whole-genome sequencing of 22 trios reveals one of the lowest mutation rates per generation …

Slc35g3 Is A Udp-N-Acetylglucosamine Transporter For Sperm Glycoprotein Formation And Underpins Male Fertility In Mice, Daisuke Mashiko, Shingo Tonai, Haruhiko Miyata, Martin M Matzuk, Masahito Ikawa Nov 2025

Slc35g3 Is A Udp-N-Acetylglucosamine Transporter For Sperm Glycoprotein Formation And Underpins Male Fertility In Mice, Daisuke Mashiko, Shingo Tonai, Haruhiko Miyata, Martin M Matzuk, Masahito Ikawa

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Despite the recognized importance of glycans in biological phenomena, their complex roles in spermatogenesis and sperm function remain unclear. SLC35G3, a 10-transmembrane protein specifically found in early round spermatids, belongs to the sugar-nucleotide transporter family, indicating its involvement in glycan formation. In this study, we found that Slc35g3 knockout male mice were sterile due to impaired sperm functions in uterotubal junction passage, zona pellucida binding, and oocyte fusion. Mouse SLC35G3 has UDP-GlcNAc transporter activity, and its ablation caused abnormal processing of the sperm plasma membrane and acrosome membrane proteins. Reported human SLC35G3 mutations (F267L and T179HfsTer27) diminished the UDP-GlcNAc transporter …

Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with a complex etiology involving environmental and genetic factors. Numerous genetic risk loci for multiple sclerosis have been nominated through genome-wide association studies, with most associated variants residing in noncoding regions. However, further work is needed to understand how genetic variation contributes to disease-related alterations to gene expression. Here, we use Massively Parallel Reporter Assays to identify genetic risk variants with genotype-dependent enhancing or silencing activity within a set of 14,275 variants distributed among multiple sclerosis risk loci that have reached genome-wide or suggestive significance. We applied our …

Do No Harm?: An Assemblage Of Care, Compliance, And Resistance To North Carolina’S Parents’ Bill Of Rights, Sarah Cornette, William Pryor Iv

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

North Carolina’s Parents’ Bill of Rights (NC-PBOR) requires school counselors to disclose sensitive student information to parents, creating profound legal-ethical dilemmas. This study examines how counselors navigate these mandates through interviews, surveys, and arts-based analysis. Findings show counselors experience institutional betrayal, ethical precarity, and emotional exhaustion, yet also engage in subtle resistance through strategic ambiguity, relational buffering, and quiet noncompliance. Methodologically, we integrate coding, poetic inquiry, and visual confection to capture affect, embodiment, and contradiction often missed by conventional analysis. By foregrounding emotion and multiplicity, we contribute to assemblage-informed policy studies and queer qualitative inquiry, while bearing witness to the …
