From Prompt To Prejudice: Visual Evidence From Ai Image Generation Platforms, Jinu K. Varghese, Padma Rani
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
This study examines how AI image generation systems perpetuate digital orientalism through systematic cultural representation patterns that increasingly shape global digital markets and international development discourse. Using visual social semiotics methodology, we conducted comparative analysis of Midjourney and ChatGPT platforms across nine culturally specific prompts examining religious imagery, contemporary social dynamics, and power structures in Indian cultural contexts. Our findings reveal that both platforms consistently reproduce colonial-era representational frameworks despite culturally sensitive prompting and advanced technical capabilities. The analysis identifies three systematic patterns: temporal displacement strategies that acknowledge modernity while containing it within orientalist categories, institutional validation requirements that privilege …

Aging And The Screen: Toxic Commodification Of The Female Body In The Substance (2024), Damlasu Uyug Sengun, Tuncer Mert Aydın, Zeynep Ozdamar Ertekin
Markets, Globalization & Development Review
Representations of the aging female body have increased in media, but their presence is still shaped by social norms and market-driven ideals. On the contrary, The Substance (2024), an absurd, postmodern body horror, provides us a provocative critique of contemporary society’s obsession with youth and beauty and the way our culture defines and commodifies aging, especially in relation to women’s bodies and identities. Our review of The Substance incorporates consumer culture theory with Julia Kristeva’s concept of the abject (1982), Laura Mulvey’s theory of the male gaze (1975), and Barbara Creed’s notion of the monstrous-feminine, (1993) to explore the toxic …

User-Specified Source Preferences For Personalizing Information Retrieval Results, Deep Shah, Aditya Bhandari, Phelipe Fernandes, Chris Meave-Ohrt
Defensive Publications Series
The information retrieval systems that utilize general ranking algorithms may not consistently surface content from sources an individual user personally trusts, potentially leading to a less personalized experience. Systems and methods can provide a framework for users to explicitly designate preferred content sources. These preferences may be stored and retrieved when a user performs a search. With appropriate user permissions being obtained, the search process can be modified to incorporate these preferences, for example, by performing a parallel search restricted to the preferred sources or by applying a ranking boost to content originating from these sources. This approach can result …

Dynamic Adjustment Of User Interface Colors Based On Contextual Signals, Tim Whalin
Defensive Publications Series
The user interface colors extracted from source content may exhibit reduced legibility and inconsistent visual fidelity when viewed under different conditions. Factors such as device screen brightness, ambient lighting, and system display modes can alter the perceived color. A system can receive a base color and a set of real-time contextual signals from a computing device and a transformation algorithm can then process these signals to modify properties of the base color, for example, its lightness and saturation, while often preserving its hue. This process can improve the perceptual consistency and readability of user interface colors across various viewing environments …

Multimodal Llm For Automated Validation And Correction Of Geospatial Data., Ilia Labzovsky, Danny Karmon
Defensive Publications Series
Manual verification of potential map inaccuracies can be resource and time intensive. Some systems may utilize a multimodal large language model (LLM) as a reasoning engine for map data validation. An LLM can be configured to ingest and analyze disparate data sources, such as user-generated reports, street-level and satellite imagery, and anonymized aggregate location data. By performing a cross-validation analysis on these inputs, the system may calculate a confidence score for a potential map discrepancy. In some examples, when the score exceeds a predetermined threshold, the system can automatically execute a correction in a geospatial database. This automated correction process …

Journal of Community Hospital Internal Medicine Perspectives
Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths and commonly spreads to the brain, bones, liver, and adrenal glands. Gastric metastases from lung cancer are uncommon and can occur in melanoma, breast cancer, and lung cancer. Most patients show no symptoms at presentation; however, metastasis from lung cancer portends a poor prognosis. This case report highlights a rare instance of lung cancer metastasizing to the stomach in a 60-year-old female that was detected incidentally on a PET scan. The scan showed two new stomach masses with increased FDG uptake and contrast enhancement. The patient had chemoimmunotherapy after receiving palliative …

The rapid increase in internet usage, digital transformation, and the rise of interconnected devices have greatly expanded the attack surface, introducing new and evolving cybersecurity challenges. Conventional security solutions frequently have difficulty adjusting to complex threats and the vast dimensionality of network traffic data, particularly in the case of imbalanced datasets. To tackle these challenges, this research introduces a Hybrid Intrusion Detection System (HyIDS-EVO) that combines the Energy Valley Optimizer (EVO) for feature selection and dimensionality reduction with machine learning classifiers, which include Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN). The system’s effectiveness …

Population Structure Analysis Of Four Basal Higher-Attines Using Bioinformatic Approaches, Gabriel Mcdanield
Biology Theses
Metapopulations within the family Formicidae are unique among other animals due to the large colonies they build, and the mating strategies required to fertilize a specialized reproductive caste that will often produce young for the life of the colony. One group of ants, the fungus-gardeners (tribe Attini). The population structure of North American non-leafcutting, fungus-gardening ants has been understudied, especially in the southwest of the United States. Additionally, not much is known about their dispersal biology, so the dynamics of dispersal of these species and how they affect population structure is likewise not well known. To shed light on the …

As water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) pursue decarbonization, the treatment of concentrated side streams from anaerobic digestion offers a critical opportunity to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. This study evaluated the intensification potential of revolving algal biofilms (RAB) for side stream nutrient removal via partial nitrification at pilot- and demonstration-scales. RAB systems were deployed at municipal WRRFs in Boulder and Iowa City, treating real dewatering side streams across a range of ammonium (NH4+–N) surface area loading rates (SALR) reaching up to 196 g N m–2d–2. The results demonstrated that RAB systems can …

Blood-accessible biomarkers offer promising insights into the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and other muscle diseases. Here, we quantified the relative abundance of 7,289 serum proteins using SomaScan proteomics in pre-treatment samples from 51 boys with DMD (aged 4 to < 7) and 13 healthy controls from the VISION DMD (VBP15-004) trial. An independent validation cohort of untreated DMD boys (aged 4 to < 8) from the FOR-DMD trial was also analyzed. Of the proteins screened, 26% and 15% were significantly elevated and decreased, respectively, in the serum of young DMD boys compared to controls (adjusted p-value < 0.05). A high correlation (Spearman r = 0.85) in fold changes was observed between the two datasets. Many proteins with altered levels overlapped with known markers of muscle injury, inflammation, regeneration, and extracellular matrix remodeling. Selected biomarkers were queried in two published muscle mRNA and a muscle snRNAseq dataset in DMD biopsies. Novel factors involved in muscle regeneration and ECM remodeling were identified. This larger-scale, multi-clinical trial-based cohort study in untreated DMD boys substantially expands the catalog of circulating biomarkers, highlighting early-stage pathological processes. These findings can help identify new therapeutic targets and develop clinically actionable biomarkers to assess disease progression and response to therapies.
Brief Amicus Curiae Regarding Presumption Of Only Partial Invalidity On Behalf Of Former Members Of The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission On Behalf Of Respondents, Trump V. Slaughter, U.S. Supreme Court (No. 25-332), Eric Schnapper
Court Briefs
Summary of Argument:
When a statute is held unconstitutional, the ‘normal rule [is] that partial, rather than facial, invalidation is the required course.” Brockett v. Spokane Arcades, Inc., 472 U.S. 491, 504 (1985). The Court should hold that the removal provision in section 41 is constitutional. But if the Court concludes that section 41 violates Article II, it should “limit the solution to the problem.” Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, 546 U.S. 320, 328 (2006).
The gravamen of the government’s constitutional argument is that the FTC exercises substantial executive authority, and that because of section 41—in contravention …
Implementing Evidence-Based Strategies For Falls Prevention, Gregory Njong
Implementing Evidence-Based Strategies For Falls Prevention, Gregory Njong
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Older adults are particularly susceptible to post-fall injuries and loss of independence. This project was implemented to decrease the number of resident falls within a long-term care setting by enhancing the knowledge and daily routine of direct-care personnel. Falls remain one of the most frequent and severe safety concerns. Although policies on fall prevention are in place, workers often inconsistently incorporate risk evaluation and fail to identify all the causes of a fall. The purpose of this project was to determine whether a structured educational program could raise the level of knowledge about fall-prevention and provide safer care practices. The …

Development Of A Clinical Practice Guideline For Diabetic Ketoacidosis (Dka) Management In The Intensive Care Unit, Kushom Gurung Leftwich
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed a critical gap in care at a 24-bed, combined, intensive care unit (ICU): The absence of a standardized, evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) for managing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a life-threatening emergency requiring timely, coordinated, and evidence-driven management. Despite its prevalence, the project site ICU lacked formal guidelines, resulting in fragmented care delivery and inconsistent treatment practices. Project site leadership expressed concerns that the absence of a unified protocol contributed to increased workload for nurses and physicians with frequent interruptions for order verification and delays that compromised patient safety and care …
Trump V. Slaughter: Brief Of Independent Agency Board Members And Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Respondent, Samuel Bagenstos
Trump V. Slaughter: Brief Of Independent Agency Board Members And Scholars As Amici Curiae In Support Of Respondent, Samuel Bagenstos
Appellate Briefs
Amici are removed board members from independent federal agencies and scholars whose work includes the study of independent agencies and the separation of powers between the President and Congress. Amici advance the view that there are federal agencies whose responsibility for protecting the safety and stability of the national infrastructure or ensuring the structural integrity of government necessitates their independence. Significant negative consequences would likely follow if these agencies were to lose their independence and their work were to become politicized.

It's gotten much easier to be a cybercriminal. We're seeing a boom in "Phishing-as-a-Service" (PaaS) platforms, which sell advanced phishing attacks as a ready-to-use product. This means almost anyone can now get the tools to launch sophisticated attacks, even if they don't have a lot of technical skill.
This research dives into one of the most prominent threats, the Tycoon 2FA phishing kit. This kit is dangerous because it's designed to bypass Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using what is known as an Adversary-in-the-Middle (AiTM) attack.
This paper covers how I built and tested a set of Python-based tools to perform "static …
