Staff Education Workshop Focusing On Enhancing Nurse Knowledge And Adherence To The Time (Tissue, Infection/Inflammation, Moisture, Edge) Framework To Improve The Quality Of Wound Assessment And Care, Ijeoma G. Onyejiji
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This staff educational project focused on implementing training on the tissue, infection/inflammation, moisture, edge (TIME) framework to address gaps in nurses’ knowledge and improve adherence to the TIME framework during wound assessment. Current evidence shows inconsistent use of standardized wound assessment among nurses, which can lead to inappropriate treatment, delayed wound healing, increased infection risk, and higher healthcare utilization. This project’s question sought to assess whether implementing a staff education workshop focusing on the TIME framework would enhance nurse knowledge and adherence to the TIME framework. Six nurses participated in the training. Pre/post questionnaires were used to evaluate knowledge before …

Implementation And Assessment Of The Openbci Platform As An Accessible Brain- Computer Interface, Jewell Norris
Honors Theses
OpenBCI is a low-cost, open-source platform for alternative brain-computer interface (BCI) software and hardware. This thesis evaluates OpenBCI’s electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) capabilities by constructing and testing a 16-channel EEG system using the Ultracortex Mark IV headset and Cyton + Daisy biosensing board. The viability of the system was assessed through real-time BCI control and comparison to a clinical-grade EEG system. Real-time BCI control of an online falling-block game was tested via the use of eye blinks EMG (channels Fp1/Fp2) and head-tilt accelerometer inputs. The BCI game demonstrated reliable control despite minor latency and artifact sensitivity. For clinical comparison, …

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the most lethal malignancies in the United States, with African American (AA) patients experiencing disproportionately higher incidence and mortality compared to Caucasian Americans (CAs). These disparities have been linked to tumor-intrinsic genomic differences, including microsatellite instability (MSI) and p53 mutation status, which may influence chemotherapeutic response, particularly to the standard-of-care agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). However, mechanistic insights have been limited by the lack of racially diverse preclinical models. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of F10 (a novel fluoropyrimidine polymer) vs. 5-FU using AA- and CA-derived CRC cell lines with distinct MSI and p53 profiles. MTT …

Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices have transformed from peripheral corporate social responsibility initiatives into core strategic imperatives in retail. Despite growing interest, the literature remains fragmented across disciplines and geographic contexts, with no comprehensive sector-specific analysis examining the evolution of ESG performance in retail contexts. Following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 127 empirical studies published between 1988 and 2024 across major databases. Random-effects models assessed ESG-performance relationships, while stakeholder theory, the resource-based view, and Consumer Behavior frameworks explained the underlying mechanisms through temporal and subsectoral analysis. ESG practices demonstrate significant positive correlations …

The lack of geological constraints on past ice-sheet change in marine-based sectors of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) following the Last Glacial Maximum limits our ability to assess (1) the drivers of ice-sheet change, and (2) the performance of ice-sheet models that are benchmarked against the paleo-record of GrIS change. Here, we provide new in situ10Be surface exposure chronologies of ice-sheet margin retreat from the outer Scoresby Sund and Storstrømmen Glacier regions in eastern and northeastern Greenland, respectively. Ice retreated from Rathbone Island, east of Scoresby Sund, by ∼ 14.1 ka, recording some of the earliest documentations of …

Community College Students' Experiences With The Syllabus: A Qualitative Study, Diego Pliego, Abby Kaplan
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
Most existing literature on college students’ use of the course syllabus has been conducted in artificial settings, collected a limited range of data, or both. This study addresses this gap in the literature with a series of in-depth qualitative interviews with students at a community college about how they interact with a syllabus from one of their current classes. We find that most students report reading at least part of the syllabus, most often the calendar and information on grading. Students are most likely to read information specific to the class and are least likely to read general college information …

During the COVID-19 pandemic early years, infection prevention measures suppressed transmission of seasonal influenza and other respiratory viruses. The early onset and moderate severity of the US 2022-2023 influenza season may have resulted from reduced use of nonpharmaceutical interventions or lower population immunity after 2 y of limited influenza virus circulation. We used a mathematical model of influenza virus transmission that incorporates vaccine-derived protection against both infection and severe disease to estimate the impact of influenza vaccines on healthcare burden. Assuming reported levels of past vaccine effectiveness (VE) against infection and hospitalization, we estimate that influenza vaccines prevented 69,886 (95% …

Evolutionary Reinforcement Learning Based On Elite Instruction And Random Search, Jian Di, Xue Wan, Limei Jiang
Evolutionary Reinforcement Learning Based On Elite Instruction And Random Search, Jian Di, Xue Wan, Limei Jiang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Evolutionary reinforcement learning currently suffers from low sample efficiency, a single coupling method, and poor convergence, which can affect its performance and scaling. To address this issue, an improved algorithm based on elite gradient instruction and double random search was proposed. The direction of the reinforcement strategy gradient update was corrected by introducing elite strategy gradient guidance carrying evolutionary information during reinforcement strategy training. Double stochastic search was used to replace the original evolutionary component, reducing the complexity of the algorithm while making the policy search meaningful and controllable in the parameter space. The introduction of complete replacement information …

Research On Time Sequence Design Method Of Dynamic Simulation Scene For Starlight Navigation, Xiaoting Su, Xiaowei Zhang, Yi Tian, Qi Li, Shuaihao Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To solve the problem of misidentification of star maps due to time sequence mismatch in the hardware-in-the-loop simulation system of star navigation, where star trackers with different shutter types (global shutter and rolling shutter) and star simulators with varying refresh display methods (whole frame refresh and line sweep refresh) operated without synchronization, a time sequence design method of the dynamic simulation scene for starlight navigation without the need of external synchronization signals was proposed. The method could design the refresh frequency and duty cycle of the corresponding star simulators according to the detector integration time of the tested star …
Assessing The Role Of Lead And Wax Shielding In Electron Beam Dose To Facial Tissue, Emma Abiri
Assessing The Role Of Lead And Wax Shielding In Electron Beam Dose To Facial Tissue, Emma Abiri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
External Beam Electron Therapy is frequently used to treat facial cancers. Wax and lead shields protect the eye lens and adjacent structures, reducing long term-complications and exposure to healthy tissues. Although these materials attenuate radiation behind the shielding, their impact on surface dose to nearby tissue requires further investigation.
This project evaluated how shielding materials influence surface dose to facial structures using MOSFET detectors on a paraffin wax phantom developed from a patient’s Dot Decimal compensator. Relative surface doses were compared for 6MeV and 9MeV electron beams under varying wax and lead shielding configurations. Results indicate that while wax and …

Design And Synthesis Of Peptide Based Systems Of Intranasal Rna Delivery, Tamara Damjanovic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present
A promising strategy that could be used to treat many central nervous system (CNS) diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and brain cancer, is through gene silencing by short interfering RNAs (siRNA). siRNA induces gene silencing by targeting complementary mRNA for degradation. However, a key challenge in the development of siRNA-based therapies for the CNS diseases is their transport across the blood–brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). To facilitate the transport of siRNA across the BBB and BCSFB we have designed a siRNA delivery system based on the 17-mer naturally occurring cyclic peptide odorranalectin (OL) carrying multiple positive …
