Optimal nutritional therapy is important for infants and children with perioperative congenital heart disease and heart failure. Medical providers face physiological and metabolic challenges when administering enteral and parenteral nutrition to these patients. Complications related to enteral nutrition can increase morbidity and mortality, although outcomes are improved in those cases in which caloric and nutrient administration can be achieved. Consensus regarding feeding strategies and timing of nutritive care is lacking. This narrative review aims to summarize, analyze and discuss the most recent literature on nutritional therapy in perioperative congenital heart disease, heart failure and pediatric patients requiring mechanical circulatory support …

Antecedents Of U.S. Information Technology Professionals’ Intent To Quit At The Beginning Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Kristin C. Scott, Jiun-Shiu Chen, Mitchell Adrian, Son Mai
International Journal of Applied Management and Technology
This study focuses on turnover intention (ITQ) of U.S. information technology workers during the spring of 2020 and the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, we evaluate a number of turnover intention antecedents not previously studied together, including job alternatives, global job embeddedness, job satisfaction, compensation satisfaction, role overload, and work–life balance. We use three first-order factors of work interference with personal life, personal life interference with work, and work—personal life enhancement. We analyzed data using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling. Results suggest no direct effects from pay satisfaction or role overload on ITQ and …
An Exploration Of Image Segmentation Techniques For Real-Time Product Detection, Andrew C. Dunton
An Exploration Of Image Segmentation Techniques For Real-Time Product Detection, Andrew C. Dunton
Master's Theses
Recent progress in LLMs enables advanced multimodal understanding, but their high computational cost necessitates monetization strategies like interactive advertising. While bounding boxes show promise for this concept, they can lack precision and visual appeal. Image segmentation offers a superior solution but faces a dual problem: traditional models demand scarce, costly training data, and open-vocabulary segmentation models like SAM are class-agnostic, unable to semantically identify a "consumer product" object class. In this research, we address these limitations by: 1) developing the Prompt-Guided Inpainting Framework (PGIF), which injects negative prompts to generate robustly annotated synthetic segmented product images; 2) investigating the Class-Agnostic …

Microgrid Black Start Challenges: The Role Of Grid-Forming Inverters, Gab-Su Seo, Wenzong Wang, Behrooz Mirafzal
Faculty Publications
Grid-forming (GFM) inverters are becoming increasingly important for future power systems, particularly in establishing and restarting microgrids after blackouts. The use of GFM inverters enables microgrids to operate independently of utility power and provide key advantages over synchronous generators in black start scenarios, including rapid startup and stable voltage and frequency support for critical loads. However, inverter-driven black start introduces unique challenges and operational considerations. This article examines key challenges and solutions, emphasizing inverter design, control strategies, and microgrid system requirements. Drawing on analysis, simulation, and experimental results, this article highlights the central role of GFM inverters in ensuring reliable …
Using A Virtual Escape Room To Teach About Blood Transfusion Reactions, Michelle Dykes, Elizabeth Cook
Using A Virtual Escape Room To Teach About Blood Transfusion Reactions, Michelle Dykes, Elizabeth Cook
Biennial Convention (CONV)
The highest preventable risk of blood transfusion error resulting in adverse events is due to human error. Nurses are required to know how to safely administer blood while also being able to recognize and manage adverse transfusion reactions. New graduate nurses are expected to have the ability to administer blood products safely. It is up to nurse educators to equip nursing students with the skills and knowledge to perform this procedure. Escape rooms are increasingly popular in educational settings. They provide a motivating and engaging atmosphere for learning while enhancing students’ critical thinking skills, time management, teamwork, and communication skills. …

Bending Energy Schemes For Discrete-Spring-Network Structural Modelling Of Red Blood Cells, Osayomwanbor Ehi-Egharevba, Mingzhu Chen, Fergal Boyle
Articles
Red blood cells (RBCs) undergo large structural deformation, including bending, when passing through capillaries. They also exhibit a range of complex shapes such as stomatocytes, discocytes and echinocytes that form due to altered blood pH and salt levels, ingested drugs and adenosine triphosphate depletion. Discrete-spring-network structural models of RBCs employ different numerical treatments of the continuum bending energy. This affects bending accuracy and the prediction of accurate RBC shapes. This research compares three representations called bending energy scheme (BES) A, B and C to evaluate their accuracy in shape predictions. BES A, seen throughout the literature, is based on the …

Increasing The Likelihood Of Using Mental Health First Aid: Applying The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Alexander E. Chan, Cheyenne Schad, Julie Slivka, Elise Young, Ghaffar A. Hurtado Choque
Journal of Extension
This study applies the Theory of Planned Behavior to examine what may drive intentions to help others after receiving Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training. The study is unique in its application of theory to understanding MHFA outcomes, as prior studies tended to be atheoretical. Logistic regression was used to analyze the results of post-program surveys completed by MHFA participants. Results showed that participants who reported positive changes in subjective norms and attitudes were significantly more likely to report increases in intentions to help. However, when analyzed in a model containing all predictors, only attitudes remained significant.

Using Fermi Estimates Within Needs Assessments: An Extension Professional’S Guide, Emma Lonstrup, Carolyn D. Rider, Miranda R. Westfall
Journal of Extension
Needs assessments are an important activity for Extension professionals, as they identify community assets and guide decisions about programs and services. A common challenge is a lack of needs assessment data. The Fermi Estimate Framework can help Extension professionals overcome the challenge of missing data by producing reasonable estimates to answer questions of interest. Here we share detailed, step-by-step instructions for using the Fermi Estimate Framework, accompanied by a real-world Extension example.

Recognition Of Bangla And English Words In Bengali Texts Using A Modified Bert-Base-Ner Model, Md Parvez Hossain, Ohidujjaman Ohidujjaman, Mohammad Shorif Uddin, Mohammad Nurul Huda, Tetsuya Shimamura
Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics
A fusion of Bangla and English words is frequently utilized, especially on social media. This phenomenon significantly hampers the learning and preservation of the Bengali language among future generations. This paper proposes a model to recognize Bangla and English words in Bengali texts. In addition, this study converts the detected English words into standard Bangla words. In this work, we redesign the BERT-base-NER model using the training input dataset. BERT is chosen for its strong contextual representation capabilities, which are well-suited to noisy and informal text. BERT-base-NER provides strong contextual embeddings but treats token labels independently, lacking explicit modeling of …
Multimodal Large Language Model Evaluation With Understanding Of Modality Gap, Na
Multimodal Large Language Model Evaluation With Understanding Of Modality Gap, Na
Defensive Publications Series
In current techniques used for evaluation of multimodal large language models (LLMs), a significant technical challenge is presented by the use of text-centric benchmarks, which can be inappropriate for the evaluation of conversational agents that operate with an audio-in interface. This creates a modality gap, as benchmarks may not capture the nuances of a spoken, multi-turn dialog, leading to inaccurate performance assessments. This disclosure describes a systematic pipeline designed to bridge the modality gap . The pipeline enables an objective and scalable evaluation for an audio-in conversational agent, with a specific focus on instruction following and function calling capabilities. Per …

Data-Centric Ai For Eeg-Based Emotion Recognition: Noise Filtering And Augmentation Strategies, Nadieh Moghadam, Rana Hegazy
School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship
Research in the biomedical field often faces challenges due to the scarcity and high cost of data, which significantly limit the development and application of machine learning models. This paper introduces a data-centric AI framework for EEG-based emotion recognition that emphasizes improving data quality rather than model complexity. Instead of proposing a deep architecture, we demonstrate how participant-guided noise filtering combined with systematic data augmentation can substantially enhance system performance across multiple classification settings: binary (high vs. low arousal), four-quadrant emotions, and seven discrete emotions. Using the SEED-VII dataset, we show that these strategies consistently improve accuracy and F1 scores, …
