Legal Issues Arising From The Military Use Of Ai-Supported Biometrics, Marten Zwanenburg

International Law Studies

Biometrics is increasingly used by armed forces for a variety of purposes, such as access control, the registration of detainees, and increasingly also targeting. The capabilities of biometric systems are considerably strengthened when they are enabled by artificial intelligence (AI). This article analyzes legal questions that are raised by the military use of such AI-supported biometrics. It argues that relevant legal frameworks are International Humanitarian Law, international human rights law, and the right to privacy in particular, as well as data protection law. The article finds that arguably, IHL may require the use of (AI-supported) biometrics in certain situations if …

Customer Experience, Engagement, And Co-Creation In Augmented Reality Retail Service, Amjad Abu Elsamen, Linda D. Hollebeek, Saifeddin Alimamy, Nikolaos Stylos, Weng Marc Lim

All Works

Retailers are increasingly using augmented reality (AR) to enhance the customer experience. This research investigates how AR service experiences contribute to customer co-creation. Two experimental studies using real AR applications and PLS-SEM provide evidence. Study 1, utilizing IKEA Place and WannaKicks, examines whether network externality enhances experience quality and whether customer autonomy influences this effect. Results show that network externality enhances experience quality, but the effect weakens at higher levels of autonomy, indicating that autonomous customers rely less on network cues. Study 2, utilizing Warby Parker and Dulux Visualizer, examines whether experience quality influences co-creation through engagement and whether the …

Comprehensive Review Of Facial Asymmetry: Etiology, Diagnosis, And Management Strategies, Hiba Ammar Yahya, Sara M. Al-Mashhadany Dec 2025

Comprehensive Review Of Facial Asymmetry: Etiology, Diagnosis, And Management Strategies, Hiba Ammar Yahya, Sara M. Al-Mashhadany

Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences

A certain degree of facial asymmetry is not only a normal biological variation but can also contribute positively to perceived beauty. However, delineating the precise boundary between ‘normal’ asymmetry and ‘abnormal’ asymmetry, the latter necessitating clinical intervention, remains a complex and subjective endeavor. Minor facial asymmetry is commonly observed even in individuals with aesthetically attractive faces, typically remaining indiscernible and thus not requiring any treatment. The determination of when ‘normal’ asymmetry transitions into ‘abnormal’ is frequently influenced by clinician’s aesthetic judgment and, critically, the patient’s perception of imbalance. The perceived abnormality of facial asymmetry is, therefore, highly dependent on individual …

Duality In Contract And Tort, Tim Friehe, Joshua C. Teitelbaum Dec 2025

Duality In Contract And Tort, Tim Friehe, Joshua C. Teitelbaum

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

We study situations in which a single investment serves the dual role of increasing the expected value of a contract (a reliance investment) and reducing the expected harm of a post-performance accident (a care investment). We show that failing to account for the duality of the investment leads to inefficient damages for breach of contract and inefficient standards for due care in tort. Conversely, we show that accounting for the duality yields contract damage measures and tort liability rules that provide correct incentives for efficient breach and reliance in contract and for efficient care in tort.

Religious Employment And The Tensions Between Liberty And Equality, R. Shawn Gunnarson, James C. Phillips, Christopher A. Bates Dec 2025

Religious Employment And The Tensions Between Liberty And Equality, R. Shawn Gunnarson, James C. Phillips, Christopher A. Bates

BYU Law Review

Located in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is an exemption for religious employers that is often misunderstood. Often courts and commentators mischaracterize it as a narrow privilege for religious employers to hire people of the same religion. But the statute’s text says otherwise. This article resolves interpretive debates about the meaning and application of the religious employer exemption through a close textualist reading that discovers a new understanding of the structure of Title VII. Our approach applies the tools of textualism, the prevailing theory of statutory interpretation. Paying attention to the text and structure of Title …

A Zealous Advocate, A Robust Cross: Cross-Examination Of Non-Adverse Witnesses By The Guardian Ad Litem, Scott Swain Dec 2025

A Zealous Advocate, A Robust Cross: Cross-Examination Of Non-Adverse Witnesses By The Guardian Ad Litem, Scott Swain

BYU Law Review

“When the lives and fundamental rights of children are at stake, there must be no silent witnesses.”1 — Carol Bellamy

Systemic pressures in child welfare litigation regularly lead guardian ad litem attorneys to default to the positions and recommendations of state social services. In such cases, witnesses called by the state in trials and evidentiary hearings are non-adverse to the guardian ad litem. This dynamic undermines the purposes of cross-examination rules, threatening the procedural interests of the parties involved. This paper will use a procedural due process balancing test to guide its analysis as it proposes three potential solutions: a …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Actinomycetota bacteria have specialized in the biosynthesis of antibacterial natural products (NPs), and extract and fraction libraries made from those strains remain a promising source of NP drug leads. Herein, we present a high-throughput screen (HTS), based on engineered Escherichia coli strains expressing the human (Trm5) or bacterial (TrmD) m1G37 tRNA methyltransferase, to discover NPs as novel anti-Gram-negative antibiotic leads. To harness the evolution of NPs with in vivo activity, the cell-based phenotypic HTS was applied to the Actinomycetota extract and fraction library at the Natural Products Discovery Center (NPDC), the Herbert Wertheim UF Scripps Institute for Biomedical …

All Decisions

Landlord initiated a holdover proceeding, claiming exemption from GCEL as a "small landlord." Tenant moved to dismiss, arguing landlord's failure to comply with LLC law publication requirements, misdescription of premises, exceeding the "small landlord" unit count, and non-compliance of the predicate notice and petition with GCEL's ownership disclosure requirements. The court denied tenant's motion, ruling that late compliance with LLC law cures the defect, that premises description issues were amendable or triable, and that GCEL requires ownership disclosure in the petition (which can be amended) but not the predicate notice. The court granted landlord's motion to amend its affirmation and …

Cache-Conscious Sparse Matrix Dense Matrix Multiplication On Gpus, Haoqiang Guo Dec 2025

Cache-Conscious Sparse Matrix Dense Matrix Multiplication On Gpus, Haoqiang Guo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the past decade, high-performance deep learning has evolved into a critical research domain, driven by the demand for efficient models and high inference throughput. Deep learning architectures have shifted from stacked convolutional layers to transformer-based models, while pruning techniques and graph-structured data have established sparse matrix–dense matrix multiplication (SpMM) as a fundamental kernel—particularly in graph neural networks (GNNs). Modern GPUs, with their massive parallelism and high-bandwidth memory, offer immense potential for accelerating these workloads. While SpMM implementations using the compressed sparse row (CSR) format remain common to avoid conversion overhead, preprocessing-based methods have recently demonstrated superior potential. In GNN …

Current Controversies On Adequate Circulating Vitamin D Levels In Ckd, Adriana S Dusso, Daniela J Porta, Carlos Bernal-Mizrachi

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Management of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) has evolved dramatically over the past five decades, driven by discoveries that have fundamentally reshaped our understanding of the vitamin D endocrine system and its role in disease progression. This review synthesizes the key pathophysiological insights and clinical evidence underlying three critical paradigm shifts. The first shift moved beyond simple calcitriol replacement with the development of selective vitamin D receptor activators (VDRAs) designed to minimize hypercalcemia while maximizing PTH suppression. Crucially, these analogs revealed unexpected survival benefits, suggesting protective VDR actions extending beyond mineral metabolism. The second shift recognized the …

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are among the most debilitating injuries in professional soccer, often leading to extended recovery times and performance impacts. While much is known about ACL injury outcomes in European leagues, data specific to the Major League Soccer (MLS) remains limited.

PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to assess the return to play (RTP) times, RTP rates, and performance outcomes after ACL reconstruction in MLS athletes. It was hypothesized that RTP times would improve over the study period and that player performance would stabilize by the third post-injury season, consistent with findings from other professional soccer leagues.

Gated Multi-Source Forcing For Auto-Regressive Sequence Generation, Victor Carbune, Florian Hartmann Dec 2025

Gated Multi-Source Forcing For Auto-Regressive Sequence Generation, Victor Carbune, Florian Hartmann

Defensive Publications Series

In decentralized machine learning environments, a local model's auto-regressive sequence generation may have performance limitations compared to a larger, centralized model, as it could lack a mechanism to leverage external knowledge during inference. A gated, multi-source forcing mechanism can dynamically evaluate a local model's uncertainty during the generation process, for example, by calculating prediction entropy. If uncertainty exceeds a configurable threshold, a token may be retrieved from an external teacher source, such as a remote centralized model or an on-device data corpus. This retrieved token can then be injected into the local model's decoding stream to guide its subsequent generation. …

Parallel Speculative Reasoning With Variable Budgets In Generative Models, Victor Carbune, Florian Hartmann Dec 2025

Parallel Speculative Reasoning With Variable Budgets In Generative Models, Victor Carbune, Florian Hartmann

Defensive Publications Series

Generative models employing a sequential internal reasoning process with a fixed computational budget may experience latency or produce lower-quality outputs. A system for parallel speculative decoding with variable budgets can analyze an input prompt to predict a distribution of potential computational budgets and subsequently initiate multiple decoding streams in parallel, where each stream may be conditioned on a different budget from the distribution. An early termination mechanism can monitor the parallel streams and select a response from a stream that finishes its generation process, without waiting for more computationally intensive streams to complete. This technique can manage the trade-off between …
