Anemia And Its Public Health Implications In Population Health, Sahar Abdul Wahab Alshaban, Raghda Shams Akram, Alaa Al-Noori, Noor Thair Tahir
Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences
One to three percent of people worldwide suffer from anemia, a condition that impairs brain development, increases illness and mortality, and lowers labor productivity. Developing successful interventions to address specific causes of anemia and evaluating anemia management programs require an understanding of the numerous and diverse causes of anemia. The description and categorization of anemia, the physiological processes by which anemia arises, the importance of inherited hemoglobin abnormalities in specific populations, and a number of circumstances that contribute to the development of anemia are all covered. The conclusion of this review is as follows. Anemia is a significant global health …

A Critical Annotated Bibliography Of Obscure Scholarship On John Kennedy Toole And A Confederacy Of Dunces. Version 2.0, H. Vernon Leighton
Library Faculty Works
The purpose of this bibliography is to summarize texts that might be difficult for the average scholar to obtain and to evaluate the quality of those obscure texts. Most of these are Master’s theses or Ph.D. dissertations that have at least some portion devoted to a discussion of John Kennedy Toole or the novel A Confederacy of Dunces. Most of the entries were written before 2014, though some were updated in 2025.
Lice Lowdown: What Every Parent Needs To Know, Michael Smith, Chelsea Wolfe
Lice Lowdown: What Every Parent Needs To Know, Michael Smith, Chelsea Wolfe
Parent-ish Podcast
Think lice are just a schoolyard nightmare? Think again. In this episode, we sit down with Chelsea Wolfe, MD, FAAP, to bust myths, share real talk, and give parents the confidence to handle those pesky critters without panic. From spotting the first signs to knowing what actually works (and what’s just old-school folklore), Dr. Wolfe breaks it all down in a way that’s honest, nonjudgmental, and—dare we say—fun-ish. Plus, you’ll get practical hacks for prevention and tips for talking to your kids without the shame spiral. Tune in and take the itch out of the equation.

Fine-Tuning Llama2 For Summarizing Discharge Notes: Evaluating The Role Of Highlighted Information, Mahshad Koohi Habibi Dehkordi, Yehoshua Perl, Fadi P. Deek, Hao Liu
School of Computing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This study investigates whether incorporating highlighted information in discharge notes improves the quality of the summaries generated by Large Language Models (LLMs). Specifically, it evaluates the effect of using highlighted versus unhighlighted inputs for fine-tuning LLaMA2-13B model for summarization tasks. We fine-tuned LlaMA2-13B in two variants using MIMIC-IV-Ext-BHC dataset: one variant fine-tuned with the highlighted discharge notes (H-LLaMA), and the other on the same set of notes without highlighting (U-LLaMA). Highlighting was performed automatically using a Cardiology Interface Terminology (CIT) presented in our previous work. H-LLaMA and U-LLaMA were evaluated on a randomly selected test set of 100 discharge notes …

Systems Level Analysis Of Gene, Pathway And Phytochemical Associations With Psoriasis, Sonalika Ray, Ojasvi Dutta, Neoklis Apostolopoulos, Konstantin G. Kousoulas, Jean Christopher Chamcheu, Rishemjit Kaur

Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disorder driven by abnormal immune activation that promotes excessive proliferation and accelerated turnover of epidermal keratinocytes. IL-17 and TNF pathways are well known in psoriasis, but the other mechanisms that keep the disease active and link it to systemic comorbidities are not yet fully understood. A combined transcriptomic and systems biology framework was applied to map regulatory circuits in psoriatic lesions and to identify phytochemical candidates capable of multi-target modulation for topical intervention. Differential gene expressions between lesional and healthy skin was analyzed, followed by pathway enrichment, upstream regulator inference, protein-protein interaction network, and chemical-gene …

Background:
Heavy metals, like lead, arsenic, and cadmium, are linked to increased inflammation even in early life; however, anti-inflammatory diets may offset these effects.
Methods:
We evaluated associations between heavy metals and inflammatory biomarkers, and potential effect modification by diet in 399 adolescents aged 10 to 18 at baseline who attended two study visits 2 years apart (773 observations). At baseline, blood lead, urinary arsenic, and cadmium concentrations were measured, and the Children’s Dietary Inflammatory Index (C-DII) was calculated. Fasting serum interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha were measured for both visits. Generalized …

The Dynamics Of The Louisiana Civil Codes, Olivier Moréteau
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This article presents a historical survey of the codification of Louisiana civil law from a dynamic perspective, aiming to identify why a digest was preferred over a code, only to be replaced by a code intended to be a better digest. Although attempts to codify Louisiana civil law reconnected it with French sources and methodology after the Spanish period and the United States' purchase, the local legal community resisted the force of codification. The abrogation of the ancient laws, a multilingual ius commune with which judges and lawyers were familiar, generated anxiety in a conservative and educated community. Additionally, a …

A Bicentennial Approach To An Exegetical School Of Private Law In Louisiana, Agustín Parise
Journal of Civil Law Studies
This paper is an expansion of the 44th Tucker Lecture on Civil Law. It deals with sources of law, codification, and the place of the civil code in the State of Louisiana. It explores to what extent it is possible to speak of the presence of an exegetical school of private law in Louisiana throughout the life of the Louisiana Civil Code. This paper is divided into five parts. First, it deals with foundational aspects of codification and of the Louisiana Civil Code. Second, it offers a conceptualization of exegesis. Third, it presents a periodization to help analyze the degree …

An Algorithm For Extracting Bathymetry From Icesat-2 Data That Employs Structure And Density Using Concentric Ellipses, Yuri Rzhanov, Kim Lowell

The ICESat-2 satellite collects LiDAR data along linear orbital tracks using a photon-counting green wavelength (532.27 nm) instrument. The utility of combining ICESat-2 data with satellite imagery for training and subsequently applying satellite-derived bathymetry models to provide estimates of shallow water depth is well-established. However, automating and improving the accuracy of the identification of ICESat-2 photon events (PEs) representing bathymetry remains a challenge. This article presents an algorithm for automated extraction of PEs reflected from the ocean floor (rather than the ocean surface or noise in the water column). The algorithm is unique in examining both the density of PEs …

Oral Histories
This interview with early Black Spades members recounts old memories and new directions for the gang, serving as both an oral history and a set of future ambitions for New York communities and the Black Spades. Giving out food, telling New York and Black Spades histories, and fighting for community centers are just a few of the many thing’s TBS: New Direction does for New York. Just as Tiny recounts how his mom brought others together by, “feeding TBS members from across the city,” TBS New Direction is creating communities of New Yorker's by giving back to the city. (Summary …
