Al-Mustaqbal Journal of Pharmaceutical and Medical Sciences
Foot-and-mouth disease Virus (FMDV) is an extremely transmittable viral illness that affects cloven-hoofed faunae, such as cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. This study aimed to demonstrate the history and prevention of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Iraq. This virus poses a significant threat to the economy, necessitating strict measures to control and prevent its spread, particularly due to its high morbidity and mortality rates, especially in young faunae. It is one of the most contagious diseases as it is transmitted directly or indirectly from a diseased fauna to a healthy one through contact with resources contaminated with the virus, such as …

Whose Story Is It? Postcolonial Racialization, Social (Im)Mobility, And Crony Capitalism In Tash Aw’S Five Star Billionaire, Chi Miao
Kritika Kultura
Malaysian Chinese author Tash Aw’s novel Five Star Billionaire narrates the stories of five Malaysian Chinese individuals striving to establish themselves in Shanghai by seeking opportunities for advancement, economic prosperity, and personal transformation. Drawing from Dan Shen’s narratological theory of dual narrative dynamics, which states how texts can have overt and covert narrative progressions, this article elucidates the novel’s hidden agenda by exploring how the characters’ experiences in contemporary China are intricately connected to their past in Malaysia. If interpreted according to the narrative’s overt progression, Five Star Billionaire depicts individuals who are enticed and ensnared by the forces of …
Restoring A Cultural Wetland With Poetry: How Huahai Writes And Acts With A Chinese Environmental Conscious, Qingqi Wei
Restoring A Cultural Wetland With Poetry: How Huahai Writes And Acts With A Chinese Environmental Conscious, Qingqi Wei
Kritika Kultura
My translation of Huahai—a Chinese ecological poet who is both an artist and activist—has revealed his environmental insights that are meant to be ecocritical, cross-cultural, and practically constructive. His “Twenty-Four Solar Terms”1 sound structurally at a natural pace with the seasonal changes, tune the poetic rhythms with those of the solar terms, and exude the essence of national culture without preaching archaic and complex moralities. Equally important is the poet’s anxieties based on a broader context of climate change in that he critically emphasizes excessive human activities. His concerns with global warming explicitly strike a chord with contemporary readers during …
Judicial Discretion And Ultra Petita In Employment Termination Cases: Lessons From Dutch Arbitration System, Laode Muhammad Sabur, Abdul Razak, Hamzah Halim, Jamhur
Judicial Discretion And Ultra Petita In Employment Termination Cases: Lessons From Dutch Arbitration System, Laode Muhammad Sabur, Abdul Razak, Hamzah Halim, Jamhur
Hasanuddin Law Review
The principle of ex aequo et bono occupies a unique position within Indonesia’s legal landscape: although not expressly codified, it is increasingly invoked by judges to pursue substantive justice in employment termination disputes. This judicial practice, however, raises concerns regarding legal certainty and the boundaries of judicial authority, especially when decisions extend beyond the parties’ claims and risk violating the ultra petita doctrine. This article examines the application of ex aequo et bono in Indonesian labor courts through a normative legal analysis, using both comparative and conceptual approaches. A focal point of the study is Supreme Court Decision No. 223 …

Julien Grisonas Family V. Argentina, Kamila Knaudt
Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review
This case is about the forced disappearance and murder of a Uruguayan artist and member of the Party for the Victory of the People and his wife by Argentina within the framework of Operation Condor. The case was brought by their children, who had been separated from their parents when they were taken and given up for adoption in Chile. Eventually, the Court found Argentina in violation of several articles of the American Convention but did not find a violation of the Inter-American Convention on Forced Disappearance of Persons.

Vibrissae-Inspired Vision-Based Magnetic-Actuated Whisker, Zhixian Hu, Yi Cheng, Juan P. Wachs, Yu She
School of Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
Tactile perception is significant for robotic operation in unstructured environments. Whisker-based sensors offer lightweight bio-inspired solutions, yet most rely on single-whisker sensing and are limited by passive interaction and constrained functionality. Here we present a circular array of eight independently actuated whiskers, each driven by a pulse-switchable permanent magnet and tracked by a camera. This design enables simultaneous multi-point sensing and coordinated actuation, supporting diverse functions. Quantitative analyses demonstrate accurate pixel-to-physical mapping, consistent pixel-to-force characterization, and long-term repeatability. In this work, we show that an vibrissae-inspired vision-based magnetic-actuated whisker array integrating distributed perception with active interaction achieves reliable physical mapping, …

Sexual And Bystander Harassment Among Part-Time Employees: Effects On Work Attitudes, Stress, And Withdrawal, Robert T. Hitlan
Faculty Publications
This study investigated the impact of sexual and bystander harassment experiences on work attitudes, stress, withdrawal, and psychological well-being of part-time employees. Participants included 314 female employees who worked part-time in their organizations. All participants completed a computer-administered workplace experience survey assessing various aspects of their work environment, including personal and bystander harassment experiences, work-related attitudes (supervisor satisfaction, coworker satisfaction, and general job stress), work behaviors (work and job withdrawal), and psychological well-being. Experiences of sexual harassment and bystander harassment were predicted to be negatively related to satisfaction and psychological health and positively related to stress and withdrawal. Both forms …
Standing Before The Icj: A Novel Framework For Erga Omnes Partes, Elson Law
Standing Before The Icj: A Novel Framework For Erga Omnes Partes, Elson Law
Loyola of Los Angeles International and Comparative Law Review
This paper explores the concept of legal standing before the International Court of Justice (“ICJ” or “the Court”) in contentious cases and the legal theories that states may invoke to establish their entitlement to submit claims relating to specific subject matters. The concept of standing in international law requires a party to demonstrate a sufficient legal interest in the subject matter of their case. Three primary theories potentially provide such an interest for states parties to multilateral treaties: legal injury from the respondent state’s violation of an obligation owed to the applicant state, obligations erga omnes partes created by the …

Multiplex immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry (mIF/IHC) are increasingly employed antibody-based technologies that use tissue sparingly and facilitate the detection of co-localized or neighboring biomarkers. Specifically, these platforms enable spatial analyses of the tumor microenvironment as well as extended applications, for example, describing normal tissue anatomy, autoimmunity, infectious diseases, etc. mIF/IHC has greatly enhanced biomarker discovery efforts, and a growing number of studies suggest superiority to traditional IHC. Standardization of staining approaches, reporting of image analysis strategies and resultant data is critical for facilitating cross-study comparisons, validation, deployment, and generalization of findings. To address this challenge, The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer …

Investigating The Potential Of Time-Varying Free Parameters In Equilibrium Shoreline Change Models Through Data Assimilation, Georgios Azorakos, Bruno Castelle, Déborah Idier, Vincent Marieu, Raimundo Ibaceta, Kristen D. Splinter, Stéphane Bertin, Gerd Masselink, Timothy Scott
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Equilibrium shoreline change models with calibrated, time-invariant free parameters have demonstrated good skill in hindcasting shoreline evolution at sites dominated by cross-shore sediment transport. However, their performance can be biased by the specific conditions present during the calibration period. In this study, a dual parameter-state ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) was applied to track non-stationarity in model free parameters at three sites along the west coast of Europe. Introducing time-varying parameters did not substantially improve performance relative to an already well-calibrated stationary model. Model skill improvement occurred mainly during the EnKF correction step, highlighting the potential of real-time data assimilation for …
A Failure To Converge? The Use Of Convergent Designs In Mixed Methods Research, David L. Morgan
A Failure To Converge? The Use Of Convergent Designs In Mixed Methods Research, David L. Morgan
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Prior studies show that what are known as “convergent” designs are the most common form of mixed methods research, yet there has been too little investigation into what researchers actually do when they use convergent designs. This study addresses that gap in the literature by investi-gating not only the prevalence of convergent designs but also the types of convergent designs used and the degree of integration in studies that used this design. I used content analysis to ex-amine a random sample of 500 articles from the Web of Science that mentioned mixed methods and were published in 2023. The results …

Municipalities, Let The People Have Their Chickens And Eat Them, Too, Cindy Vong
Journal of Food Law & Policy
In the pre-industrial era, before the advent of long-distance transportation or food preservation, human survival necessitated proximity to where food was grown or husbanded. Cities located near agriculturally productive lands and domesticated livestock animals were commonplace within cities. But by the 1920s, the technological innovations of the Second Industrial Revolution left urban areas free of farm animals and farm-related activities. Local governments exercised their powers to codify the separation of residential and agricultural uses within cities and reinforce the idea that food production was not proper in community neighborhoods. Yet, a century later, local governments use those same powers to …

Why Food In The United States May (Still) Never Be Safe: A Look Back At My Over Thirty Years Thinking About Food And The Law, Denis Stearns
Journal of Food Law & Policy
This article can serve a function as a concluding section—a kind of coda—for issues addressed in greater depth by the author (Denis Stearns) before.
This article also allows Sterns to return to a central question that prompted his thought-journey in the first place: Why does the food in this country continue to be so unsafe, despite all of the laws, all of the enforcement efforts, all of the food safety advocacy, and all of the lawsuits filed to recover damages on behalf of people injured and killed year after year. What follows, then, are additional and updated conclusions that thirty …

The Law Of Hard Times: What Today’S Lawyers And Policymakers Can Learn From The Farm Crisis Of The 1980s, Sarah Vogel, Mary Eichenberger
Journal of Food Law & Policy
It is undeniable, the United States is experiencing another farm depression similar to the Great Depression of the 1930s and the Farm Crisis of the 1980s. While every era is different, knowledge of the case law developed during the farm struggles of the 1930s and 1980s, and the statutory and regulatory reforms that arose from advocacy during those difficult times will be helpful to today’s agricultural lawyers and policymakers. As farmers and ranchers again find themselves, due to circumstances beyond their control, in financial distress, they will contact attorneys, state secretaries of agriculture, state attorneys general, agriculture organizations, and state …

Chaos Engineering In Multi-Gigahertz Solid-State Lasers: A Novel Approach To Optoelectronic Control, Mikhail V. Gorbunkov, Yulia Ya. Maslova, Yulia A. Sinichkina
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
This paper presents a comprehensive study of a multi-gigahertz chaotic generator of light pulses based on solid-state laser sources, including fiber lasers, governed by carefully designed positive and negative feedback loops. It harnesses the inherent nonlinear dynamics within a solid-state laser controlled by a combination of two inertial feedback loops, enabling the realization of complex chaotic behavior, including the logistic map scenario, under moderate amplification conditions. The laser system dynamics are rigorously investigated through theoretical modeling, employing a nonlinear map approach, and high-resolution picosecond simulations. The results of our numerical simulations highlight the efficacy of fast electro-optical feedback system with …

A New Avenue For Higgs Boson Self-Coupling Measurements: Combined Searches For Higgs Pairs In Multilepton Final States With The Atlas Experiment, Reagan E. Thornberry
Physics Theses and Dissertations
The Higgs boson self-coupling (λ) is a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model that sets the shape of the Higgs potential and probes the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. This coupling can be directly measured through Higgs boson pair production (HH), which has a predicted production rate roughly 1000 times smaller than single-Higgs production at the LHC.
A combined search for non-resonant Higgs boson pair production in final states with multiple light leptons (e,µ), hadronically decaying τ leptons, and photons is presented, using 140 fb−1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of …

Characterization And Control Of Rod-Like Soft Robots, Tianrui Li
Mechanical Engineering Research Theses and Dissertations
Micro-scale robotic systems have garnered significant interest for applications in micromanufacturing and biosensing, yet quantitative design rules linking geometry, stiffness distribution, and magnetic actuation to locomotion performance at low Reynolds number remain limited. This thesis investigates magnetically actuated rod-like soft robots composed of hydrogel filaments with embedded micro-magnets and tunable hard:soft length ratios. Four- and eight-magnet swimmers with hard:soft ratios ranging from 1:1 to 2.5:1 and 4:3:1 are fabricated using a simple molding-and-insertion process and tested in water and silicone oil. A triaxial Helmholtz coil system generates rotating magnetic fields from 1 to 10 Hz, and a custom image-processing pipeline …
The Other Side Of Rousseau’S Political Theology: The Influence Of Plutarch And Calvin On The Profession Of Faith Of The Savoyard Vicar, Thomas Daniel Moore
The Other Side Of Rousseau’S Political Theology: The Influence Of Plutarch And Calvin On The Profession Of Faith Of The Savoyard Vicar, Thomas Daniel Moore
Yale Divinity School Theses
This thesis examines Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar, paying particular attention philosophic influences of the Vicar, especially as pertains to metaphysics. It fills a void in the scholarship, as there is not much work in general–and especially in recent years–on the relationship between Plutarch, Calvin, and Rousseau. Indeed, although Rousseau’s love for Plutarch is often acknowledged, it is seldom explored; and, when it is explored, it is typically only with an eye to the political realm, and never the metaphysical dimension. Calvin, when mentioned in association with Rousseau at all, is typically interpreted as a minor …

From Dictionary To Classroom: Philippine English In The Oxford English Dictionary And Language Education In The Philippines, Danica Salazar
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
The present article offers an overview of the Oxford English Dictionary’s (OED) continuing efforts to improve its coverage of words originating from world varieties of English, such as those spoken in Anglophone communities in postcolonial Southeast Asia. In these new centers of English, millions of second-language speakers use a variety of linguistic mechanisms to adapt the English word store to their unique cultural and social milieu, and the OED is documenting this distinctive vocabulary by including a wider range of lexical innovations from Southeast Asian varieties of English that more accurately reflect the way that the language is being used …

Integrating Generative Ai Into Ds 774/874 & Graduate Is/Analytics Education, Andrew Bushnell
Business Analytics Student Projects and Publications
The widespread availability of generative artificial intelligence has weakened traditional assessment methods in Information Systems and Business Analytics education. In DS 774/874, AI and Emerging Technologies in Business (formerly E-Business) at the University of New Hampshire, auto-graded assignments and presentation-based deliverables no longer reliably indicate student understanding, as AI can generate correct or polished outputs with minimal engagement. Using DS 774/874 as a case study, this paper combines course analysis, evidence from business analytics education research, and a targeted review of peer and aspirational programs to examine how AI is being incorporated into IS and analytics curricula. The paper …
