Mental health issues among college students is a leading public health concern, which seems to have been exacerbating during the COVID-19 pandemic. While previous estimates related to psychological burden among college students are available, quantitative synthesis of available data still needs to be performed. Therefore, this meta-analysis endeavors to present collective evidence discussing the psychological impact of COVID-19 among college students. Bibliographical library databases, including Embase, Medline, CINAHL, Scopus, and PsycINFO, were systematically searched for relevant studies. Titles, abstracts, and full articles were screened, and two reviewers extracted data. Heterogeneity was assessed by I-2 statistic. The random-effects model was utilized …

Strategically Making Your Farm Or Ranch Profitable, Matthew Stockton
Strategically Making Your Farm Or Ranch Profitable, Matthew Stockton
Cornhusker Economics
The word ‘strategically’ sounds sophisticated and is often used to imply the presence of some secret idea that will always work to increase profit. The word seems to suggest that to be strategic requires special knowledge or an almost magical method of accomplishing something. In truth, however, strategy is simply a plan of action or policy designed to achieve something desired, and it can be complex or basic, as each occasion requires. Strategy can be good or bad, a successful endeavor or a disaster. The key to good strategy is to have clear understanding of desired out-come, as well as …

BACKGROUND: Dysregulation of ceramide and sphingomyelin levels have been suggested to contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Ceramide transfer proteins (CERTs) are ceramide carriers which are crucial for ceramide and sphingomyelin balance in cells. Extracellular forms of CERTs co-localize with amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques in AD brains. To date, the significance of these observations for the pathophysiology of AD remains uncertain.
METHODS: A plasmid expressing CERTL, the long isoform of CERTs, was used to study the interaction of CERTL with amyloid precursor protein (APP) by co-immunoprecipitation and immunofluorescence in HEK cells. The recombinant CERTL protein …

The 2019 emergence of, SARS-CoV-2 has tragically taken an immense toll on human life and far reaching impacts on society. There is a need to identify effective antivirals with diverse mechanisms of action in order to accelerate preclinical development. This study focused on five of the most established drug target proteins for direct acting small molecule antivirals: Nsp5 Main Protease, Nsp12 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase, Nsp13 Helicase, Nsp16 2'-O methyltransferase and the S2 subunit of the Spike protein. A workflow of solvent mapping and free energy calculations was used to identify and characterize favorable small-molecule binding sites for an aromatic pharmacophore …

The 2020 Election And Its Aftermath: Love, Lies, And Ensorceling Leadership, George R. Goethals
Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications
Though Donald Trump decisively lost the 2020 US presidential election, his mob-inciting charisma created a large and devoted base unusual in American politics. Insights from Sigmund Freud’s account of the emotional connections between leaders and followers, and later reframing of those views, suggest some of the dynamics that create the intense attachment expressed by Trump supporters, and his resulting ability to get his most loyal followers and allies to believe and do almost anything, no matter the evidence revealing his lies and the extremity of his demands. Essential elements include qualities of a leader and the leader’s message that make …

Retiform Hemangioendothelioma: A Case Series And Review Of The Literature, Qurratulain Chundriger, Muhammad Usman Tariq, Shabina Rahim, Jamshid Abdul-Ghafar, Nasir Ud Din
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Background: Retiform Hemangioendothelioma (RH) is an extremely rare vascular tumor of intermediate biological behavior, which is prone to local recurrence but rarely shows metastasis to distant sites. It may harbor areas resembling Dabska tumor in some cases and angiosarcoma, which in its well differentiated form may exhibit similar pathological appearance in some areas, making it problematic to rule out a possibility of a malignant diagnosis on a core biopsy. Therefore, complete surgical resection with negative margins is essential for accurate diagnosis and local control.
Results: In our series, two of the three Pakistani cases were in females, with an age …

Pharmacogenetic Testing Implementation In A Rural Pediatric Psychiatric Hospital, Tianna Leitch, Shayna Killam, Kirk Katseanes, Karen Brown, Corbin Schwanke, Abdallah Elias, Susan Trinidad
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how patients’ genes may affect their response to certain medications. Pharmacogenetic testing enables clinical providers to individualize patient therapies and improve outcomes in clinical settings. Successful implementation strategies for pharmacogenetic testing, however, have been limited to major academic medical centers and large health care systems. By contrast, rural, community-based health systems, common in a state like Montana, have been slow to implement these advancements, threatening to exacerbate existing healthcare disparities. In the field of psychiatry, the effective management of patient medications is of the upmost concern, and pharmacogenetic testing may help clinicians to guide and …

Using Classification Trees To Identify Bumble Bees, Rebekah Brassfield, Janene Lichtenberg Mrs
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Identification of bumble bees is a time-consuming process that often involves lethal collections of specimens for microscopic identification. With declining bumble bee populations, new methods of identification are in demand. High resolution cameras have provided taxonomists with an alternative to lethal captures. High definition photographs provide a clear source of key identifying features, but still requires the evaluation of hundreds of combinations of features to correctly identify specimens.
Machine learning uses decision trees to classify large amounts of data in short periods of time. Much like taxonomists, the program learns to identify a specimen using combinations of characteristics. Two methods …

Cognitive Reserve And Sex Differences In An Alzheimer's Disease Population, Emily Hicks, Genna Mashinchi, Hannes Heppner
UM Graduate Student Research Conference (GradCon)
Objective: The rate of cognitive decline is not equivalent for all AD patients, as some are able to remain functionally independent longer than others despite similar levels of neuropathology. Cognitive reserve theory (CR) posits that some people maintain cognitive functioning due to the presence of protective factors, such as educational and occupational attainment. The present study sought to investigate relations between cognitive functioning and education within an AD sample. Additionally, the current study examined if the impact of education was influenced by participant age and sex, as previous research has noted higher rates of AD in women than men.

International Theory Tests on Global Refugee Policies
Throughout the world there are millions of people displaced from their homes, awaiting a host country to let them in so they may start a new life. Unfortunately, states have let politics stand in the way of helping these refugees. Displaced persons are stuck in desolate areas, with little hope or idea of what will happen to them. Those that are seeking asylum have fled for their life, with little to no time to prepare for their displacement. There are many important international relations theories; however, classical and structural realism are two of …

Information Perception And Climate Change Adaptation, Ji Won Sung
Undergraduate Economic Review
Despite 97% of scientists believing that climate change is occurring, a far smaller proportion of ordinary citizens agree with this statement and the proportion of those who do greatly diverge by political affiliation. This paper lays out a dynamic information updating model with adaptation choice as the final outcome, linking information perception, belief perception, and behavioral implementation. Furthermore, this paper examines how various behavioral and environmental factors affect the agent’s adaptation choices by means of such cognitive processes. This research has implications for further research on climate change preference formation and effective communication strategies, such as informative or normative nudges.

An Analysis Of The Effects Of Extinction Relative To Baseline Measures Including And Excluding Consumption Time, Kelti Keister
Thesis Projects
Extinction bursts are a widely discussed phenomenon. The data analysis methods used to analyze the effects of extinction bursts have not been examined thoroughly within the field of applied behavior analysis, however. In this study, we implemented extinction procedures in a reversal design on three typically developing pre-school aged individuals. We then conducted two different data analysis methods. First, extinction effects were evaluated relative to one baseline measure including reinforcer consumption time and one baseline measure excluding reinforcer consumption time. Second, extinction was evaluated at the whole- and within-session (last five minutes of baseline and first ten minutes of extinction) …

Identification Of Lsb Image Steganography Using Cover Image Comparisons, Michael Pelosi, Chuck Easttom
Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law
Steganography has long been used to counter forensic investigation. This use of steganography as an anti-forensics technique is becoming more widespread. This requires forensic examiners to have additional tools to more effectively detect steganography. In this paper we introduce a new software concept specifically designed to allow the digital forensics professional to clearly identify and attribute instances of LSB image steganography by using the original cover image in side-by-side comparison with a suspected steganographic payload image. This technique is embodied in a software implementation named CounterSteg. The CounterSteg software allows detailed analysis and comparison of both the original cover …
