Closing The Literacy Gap In Reading Using Phonics And Fluency Interventions, Ariel Markgraf Feb 2021

Closing The Literacy Gap In Reading Using Phonics And Fluency Interventions, Ariel Markgraf

Graduate Teacher Education

Effective reading interventions are essential in closing the literacy gap. Many educators are unaware of what is considered best practice for struggling readers. This paper analyzed current research on several methods, including phonics, fluency, and mix-method reading interventions and their effects on students’ reading abilities. The effectiveness and fidelity of teacher-led intervention strategies were examined as a causal means to an intervention’s success. There was also a focus on using technology-based applications in various interventions. Research showed several intervention strategies could support struggling readers, including phonic analysis (word boxes), constant time delay, and repeated and continuous reading focusing on the …

Adversarial Targeted Forgetting In Regularization And Generative Based Continual Learning Models, Muhammad Umer, Robi Polikar Feb 2021

Adversarial Targeted Forgetting In Regularization And Generative Based Continual Learning Models, Muhammad Umer, Robi Polikar

Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research

Continual (or "incremental") learning approaches are employed when additional knowledge or tasks need to be learned from subsequent batches or from streaming data. However these approaches are typically adversary agnostic, i.e., they do not consider the possibility of a malicious attack. In our prior work, we explored the vulnerabilities of Elastic Weight Consolidation (EWC) to the perceptible misinformation. We now explore the vulnerabilities of other regularization-based as well as generative replay-based continual learning algorithms, and also extend the attack to imperceptible misinformation. We show that an intelligent adversary can take advantage of a continual learning algorithm's capabilities of retaining existing …

A Quiver Variety Approach To Root Multiplicities, Peter Tingley Feb 2021

A Quiver Variety Approach To Root Multiplicities, Peter Tingley

Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

We present combinatorial upper bounds on dimensions of certain imaginary root spaces for symmetric Kac–Moody algebras. These come from the realization of the corresponding infinity-crystal using quiver varieties. The framework is general, but we only work out specifics in rank two. In that case we give explicit bounds. These turn out to be quite accurate, and in many cases exact, even for some fairly large roots.

Theses and Dissertations

Current recommendations for school mathematics include teaching algebra as a K–12 content stranding beginning in the elementary-school grades. The focus of this study was on preservice elementary mathematics teachers’ knowledge of algebra content in the intended curriculum for K–8 mathematics. In the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM), great emphasis is placed on numerical structure, and the usefulness of number properties in algebraic manipulation. In this study, preservice teachers’ knowledge of structural properties was explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the knowledge that preservice elementary teachers have about number properties and whether they could apply these …

Transcriptomic And Functional Analyses Of Mitochondrial Dysfunction In Pressure Overload-Induced Right Ventricular Failure, Hyuntae V Hwang, Nefthi Sandeep, Ramesh V Nair, Dong-Qing Hu, Mingming Zhao, Ingrid S Lan, Giovanni Fajardo, Scot J Matkovich, Daniel Bernstein, Sushma Reddy

Open Access Publications

Background In complex congenital heart disease patients such as those with tetralogy of Fallot, the right ventricle (RV) is subject to pressure overload, leading to RV hypertrophy and eventually RV failure. The mechanisms that promote the transition from stable RV hypertrophy to RV failure are unknown. We evaluated the role of mitochondrial bioenergetics in the development of RV failure. Methods and Results We created a murine model of RV pressure overload by pulmonary artery banding and compared with sham-operated controls. Gene expression by RNA-sequencing, oxidative stress, mitochondrial respiration, dynamics, and structure were assessed in pressure overload-induced RV failure. RV failure …

Factors Influencing The Retention Of Teachers In Private Schools Serving Students With Autism, Leah M. Farinola Feb 2021

Factors Influencing The Retention Of Teachers In Private Schools Serving Students With Autism, Leah M. Farinola

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The purpose of this sequential mixed-methods study was to explore the factors associated with teacher retention in New Jersey private schools serving children with autism. This study explored the most influential variables in teacher retention within school administrators' scope of control. The research design consisted of two phases, with the first phase guiding the second. The first phase was quantitative and included collecting and analyzing data through teacher responses from an online survey. Survey data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. This analysis led to the creation and review of the interview questions utilized in the second phase. The second …

The Predictive Influence Of In-School And Out-Of-School Suspension On Academic Achievement In New Jersey Public Middle Schools In Grades 6–8, Jennifer A. Casazza Feb 2021

The Predictive Influence Of In-School And Out-Of-School Suspension On Academic Achievement In New Jersey Public Middle Schools In Grades 6–8, Jennifer A. Casazza

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Since zero-tolerance policies were put into effect, suspension rates have risen dramatically in the United States (Ayers et al., 2001). This fact is unsettling because research shows that suspension has a negative impact on both academic achievement and poor life outcomes (Rausch & Skiba, 2005). The goal of this quantitative study was to explore the predictive power of in-school and out-of-school suspension on academic achievement in Grades 6–8 in New Jersey by controlling for student demographics and school climate variables. This study used hierarchical multiple regression to analyze the data and used a fixed effects model to control for the …

Investigating The Recent History Of A Changing Planet With Innovative Isotopic Techniques And New Geologic Archives, Ryan A. Venturelli Feb 2021

Investigating The Recent History Of A Changing Planet With Innovative Isotopic Techniques And New Geologic Archives, Ryan A. Venturelli

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Globally averaged Earth surface temperatures indicate a 0.8°C warming since 1880. Though this warming is a result of anthropogenic influence that has exceeded natural forcings, a thorough understanding of Earth's climate system requires a knowledge of changes in global temperatures beyond the instrumental record. To achieve this, we must supplement the temporally limited observational record with proxy records of environmental conditions in the geologic past. Though the foundational questions underlying interrogations of the geologic past are seemingly simple (What happened? When?), the accuracy of their answers depend upon accessibility and availability of geologic materials as well as the capabilities of …

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Ecological flexibility, extended lifespans, and large brains have long intrigued evolutionary biologists, and comparative genomics offers an efficient and effective tool for generating new insights into the evolution of such traits. Studies of capuchin monkeys are particularly well situated to shed light on the selective pressures and genetic underpinnings of local adaptation to diverse habitats, longevity, and brain development. Distributed widely across Central and South America, they are inventive and extractive foragers, known for their sensorimotor intelligence. Capuchins have among the largest relative brain size of any monkey and a lifespan that exceeds 50 y, despite their small (3 to …
