Go For It! Exercising Makes You Happy And Strong., Donatella Tramontano

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Despite it is generally recognized the beneficial role of physical activity, large portion of the population is physically inactive. Very alarmingly, the well-known gender gap in physical activity is constantly increasing. Several barriers obstacle women to perform physical activity although exercising would be of paramount importance for their health in particular during pregnancy and menopause. In addition to physical health benefits, physical activity may influence well-being and resilience, greatly impacting on quality of life.

Here we explore the relationship between physical activity resilience and well-being in a group of 1107 female residents in the Metropolitan area of Naples.

04. Recreating 19th Century Regency Headwear With 21st Century Materials And Tools, Meagan Mcmillian, Michele Dormaier, Mark Guinn

Undergraduate Research Symposium

The question I am trying to answer through my research and work is how can we recreate 19th century Regency Headwear with 21st century materials and tools. This project is important to me due to the fact that I am a costumer who seeks to find ways to make past century costume styles relevant with the current style of the 21st century. With the help of my costume advisor, Michele Dormaier, we found different 19th century Regency Headwear sewing patterns that would allow for the use of modern materials and tools. The method that was used while researching was to …

Ionized Or Total Magnesium Levels, What Should We Measure In Critical Ill Patients?, Giuliana Scarpati, Daniela Baldassarre, Filomena Oliva, Gabriele Pascale, Ornella Piazza

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Monitoring and measuring magnesium (Mg) values are essential to prevent the development of numerous complications in perioperative medicine and critically ill patients. Although previous studies suggest that measuring free ionized magnesium (iMg) is more useful for estimating Mg status, clinicians currently rely on measurement of total serum magnesium to determine if supplemental magnesium is needed. In this review, we analyzed the recent literature to decide whether it is better to measure ionized serum Mg or total serum Mg when assessing magnesium status, whether iMg predicts clinical outcome, and what are the difficulties in measuring serum iMg levels in intensive care …

Students’ Reasons Why Re-Entering The University After Co-Op Experience Is Difficult, Cathryn G. Sebree

Grawemeyer Colloquium Papers

  1. Introduction

The purpose of this study was to investigate reasons why the transition from an undergraduate co-op to the academic semester is difficult. Student transitions from co-op back to the institution are difficult for students and this research helps understand why students have difficulty.

Cooperative education programs (co-ops) are partnerships between industries and universities that grant students hands-on experience in their field. Students are benefitted in many ways from co-op experiences, however, there are some instances where the transition back into an academic semester is difficult for students.

This study takes place at a large southeast research institution. The engineering …

Molecular excitons play a central role in natural and artificial light harvesting, organic electronics, and nanoscale computing. The structure and dynamics of molecular excitons, critical to each application, are sensitively governed by molecular packing. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) templating is a powerful approach that enables controlled aggregation via sub-nanometer positioning of molecular dyes. However, finer sub-Angstrom control of dye packing is needed to tailor excitonic properties for specific applications. Here, we show that adding rotaxane rings to squaraine dyes templated with DNA promotes an elusive oblique packing arrangement with highly desirable optical properties. Specifically, dimers of these squaraine:rotaxanes exhibit an absorption …

Fate Of Nitrate During Groundwater Recharge In A Fractured Karst Aquifer In Southwest Germany, Anna-Neva Visser, Moritz F. Lehman, Hermann Rügner, Fernando Mazo D’Affonseca, Peter Grathwohl, Nia Blackwell, Andreas Kappler, Karsten Osenbrück

KIP Articles

Over the past decades, fractured and karst groundwater systems have been studied intensively due to their high vulnerability to nitrate (NO3 − ) contamination, yet nitrogen (N) turnover processes within the recharge area are still poorly understood. This study investigated the role of the karstified recharge area in NO3 − transfer and turnover by combining isotopic analysis of NO3 − and nitrite (NO2 − ) with time series data of hydraulic heads and specific electrical conductivity from groundwater monitoring wells and a karstic spring in Germany. A large spatial variability of groundwater NO3 − concentrations (0.1–0.8 mM) was observed, which …

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

ASL-LEX is a publicly available, large-scale lexical database for American Sign Language (ASL). We report on the expanded database (ASL-LEX 2.0) that contains 2,723 ASL signs. For each sign, ASL-LEX now includes a more detailed phonological description, phonological density and complexity measures, frequency ratings (from deaf signers), iconicity ratings (from hearing non-signers and deaf signers), transparency (“guessability”) ratings (from non-signers), sign and videoclip durations, lexical class, and more. We document the steps used to create ASL-LEX 2.0 and describe the distributional characteristics for sign properties across the lexicon and examine the relationships among lexical and phonological properties of signs. Correlation …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

Recently, the Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) have revised recommendations for the translation of CYP2D6 genotype to phenotype. Changes affect phenotype grouping, as well as the value used to calculate activity score for the CYP2D6*10 allele to better reflect the substantially decreased activity of this allele which is the most frequent allele found in Asian populations. This study aimed to evaluate whether the lower value for CYP2D6*10 as recommended, and the revised phenotype groupings improve the relationship between CYP2D6 genotype and risperidone measures. One hundred and ninety-nine children and adolescents with autism treated with a risperidone-based regimen for at least …
