This Is Minnesota: An Analysis Of Disparities In Black Student Enrollment At The University Of Minnesota Law School And The Effects Of Systemic Barriers To Black Representation In The Law, Maleah Riley-Brown, Samia Osman, Justice C. Shannon, Yemaya Hanna
Minnesota Law Review Headnotes, Vols. 94-106 (2009-2022)
Lawyers often occupy powerful positions in our society and can have a profound impact in designing and changing laws, influencing major policy regimes, and leading cities and communities. Further, the law is often lauded as a method to promote a system of justice and fairness. But for too long, the law has enforced a system of justice based in White supremacy and oppression. Laws were designed and implemented to steal land from indigenous communities, to enslave and oppress Africans, and to force Japanese-Americans into internment camps, amongst many other atrocities. To this day, the law is used to both expand …

Pain Recognition Performance On A Single Board Computer, Iyonna L. Tynes
Pain Recognition Performance On A Single Board Computer, Iyonna L. Tynes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Emotion recognition is a quickly growing field of study due to the increased interest in building systems which can classify and respond to emotions. Recent medical crises, such as the opioid overdose epidemic in the United States and the global COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of emotion recognition applications is areas like Telehealth services. Considering this, this thesis focuses specifically on pain recognition. The problem of pain recognition is approached from both a hardware and software perspective, as we propose a real-time pain recognition system, from facial images, that is deployed on an NVIDIA Jetson Nano single-board computer. We …

Anti-Science Ideology, Shi-Ling Hsu
Anti-Science Ideology, Shi-Ling Hsu
University of Miami Law Review
Political attacks against scientists and scientific research are nothing new, though the Trump Administration appears to have increased both the breadth and the depth of such attacks. What is new, it seems, are attacks on science that are not in service of protecting any identifiable regulated industry. Under the Trump Administration, the attacks on science are more systemic, and aimed more at reducing scientific capacity in the federal government, rather than mere one-off policy interventions to help an individual industry.
This Article suggests that the Trump Administration, more than previous administrations, has sought to use science as part of a …

Using Election Forecasts To Understand The Potential Influence Of Campaigns, Media, And The Law In U.S. Presidential Elections, Peter K. Enns, Julius Lagodny
University of Miami Law Review
How do campaigns, media, and voting laws influence the outcome of U.S. Presidential elections? Political scientists often argue that these factors influence outcomes much less than commonly thought. To illustrate this argument, we show that we can predict the presidential vote in each state with a high degree of accuracy. Specifically, between 2004 and 2016, we correctly predict 94% of all state presidential vote outcomes. Our predictions are based on a forecasting model of the Electoral College, based primarily on each state’s approval rating of the incumbent president (using almost 90,000 survey responses from June and July of election years), …
Virus As Foreign Invader: U.S. Voters & The Immigration Debate, Rebecca Sharpless
Virus As Foreign Invader: U.S. Voters & The Immigration Debate, Rebecca Sharpless
University of Miami Law Review
Nativist sentiments against classes of immigrants have existed since colonial times. But views about immigration and immigrants drive U.S. electoral politics now more than ever, accounting for a significant number of voters who crossed party lines in the 2016 presidential election. The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to harden deeply-held beliefs about outsider threats and further entrench the polarization of public views on immigration. During his campaigns and term in office, President Trump popularized nativism, breaking from the received wisdom of the Republican party. Casting the virus as a foreign invader, he built on fears of the contagion to alter …
Power To The People: The Supreme Court’S Confirmation Of State Power In The Wake Of Faithless Electors, Gabrielle Engel
Power To The People: The Supreme Court’S Confirmation Of State Power In The Wake Of Faithless Electors, Gabrielle Engel
University of Miami Law Review
One of the most cherished American liberties is the right to vote. Yet, the Constitution does little to protect the integrity of individual voters. Instead, the Founding Fathers created an Electoral College to represent states’ will. Over time, states enacted laws requiring that electoral votes be cast to reflect the state popular vote. In 2016, several electors voted for candidates who did not win their state’s popular vote, grounding their actions in a believed constitutional right to vote freely and unencumbered by state outcomes. The Supreme Court addressed this issue in Chiafalo v. Washington, holding that states may bind electoral …

Gauging Working Memory Capacity From Differential Resting Brain Oscillations In Older Individuals With A Wearable Device, Soheil Borhani, Xiaopeng Zhao, Margaret R. Kelly, Karah E. Gottschalk, Fengpei Yuan, Gregory A. Jicha, Yang Jiang
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Working memory is a core cognitive function and its deficits is one of the most common cognitive impairments. Reduced working memory capacity manifests as reduced accuracy in memory recall and prolonged speed of memory retrieval in older adults. Currently, the relationship between healthy older individuals’ age-related changes in resting brain oscillations and their working memory capacity is not clear. Eyes-closed resting electroencephalogram (rEEG) is gaining momentum as a potential neuromarker of mild cognitive impairments. Wearable and wireless EEG headset measuring key electrophysiological brain signals during rest and a working memory task was utilized. This research’s central hypothesis is that rEEG …

Protease Oma1 Modulates Mitochondrial Bioenergetics And Ultrastructure Through Dynamic Association With Micos Complex, Martonio Ponte Viana, Roman M. Levytskyy, Ruchika Anand, Andreas S. Reichert, Oleh Khalimonchuk
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
Remodeling of mitochondrial ultrastructure is a process that is critical for organelle physiology and apoptosis. Although the key players in this process—mitochondrial contact site and cristae junction organizing system (MICOS) and Optic Atrophy 1 (OPA1)—have been characterized, the mechanisms behind its regulation remain incompletely defined. Here, we found that in addition to its role in mitochondrial division, metallopeptidase OMA1 is required for the maintenance of intermembrane connectivity through dynamic association with MICOS. This association is independent of OPA1, mediated via the MICOS subunit MIC60, and is important for stability of MICOS and the intermembrane contacts. The OMA1-MICOS relay is required …

The United States is the only large federal country that does not have an explicit way to reduce the economic disparities among more and less developed regions. In Germany, for example, federal revenues are distributed by a formula that takes into account the relative level of wealth of each state (the so-called Finanzausgleich, or fiscal equalization). Similar mechanisms are found in Australia, Canada, India, and other large federal countries. The United States, on the other hand, has no such explicit redistribution. Each state is generally considered equal and sovereign, and the federal government does not distribute revenues to equalize …

Address Practices Of Deaf Undergraduate Students And Faculty: A Study Of Language, Identity, And Community, Brenda Nicodemus, Maicol Formentelli, Keith Cagle, Jay Pittman
Articles
The members of a community have conventionalized linguistic structures to convey both the content of a message and the social status of the interlocutors. Crucial in the codification of interpersonal relations are address terms, which are determined by pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic norms related to the language system, the local communicative event and the broader social context. The study examines the usage of address terms (direct address, reference, introductions) at a bilingual university that uses American Sign Language (ASL) as language of instruction and socialization, and English in teaching/learning materials, email correspondence, written announcements, inter alia. Based on interviews with Deaf …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
We propose a novel type of photonic-crystal (PC)-based nanostructures for efficient and tunable optically-induced spin current generation via the spin Seebeck and inverse spin Hall effects. It has been experimentally demonstrated that optical surface modes localized at the PC surface covered by ferromagnetic layer and materials with giant spin-orbit coupling (SOC) notably increase the efficiency of the optically-induced spin current generation, and provides its tunability by modifying the light wavelength or angle of incidence. Up to 100% of the incident light power can be transferred to heat within the SOC layer and, therefore, to the spin current. Importantly, the high …

Artist Interview - Tsaruk & Ahmadova
SIGNED: The Magazine of The Hong Kong Design Institute
Belarusian designers Igor Tsaruk and Marina Ahmadova are not married, not a couple in love, not relatives, but they have been working together for more than five years. They have similar views on beauty and design in the broad sense and complement each other as professionals, which they think gives them an advantage over other designers.
They commented: “We are both architects and we were classmates at university. During the last year of our study we created our own project, ‘Fajno Design’, which specialised in industrial and interior-design work. In the summer of 2017, ‘Fajno’ started producing items we had …

Diversity And Inclusion Toolbox: Action Items For The Nonprofit Sector, Donovan Branche Phd, Karen Ford Dsw
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
There is a critical lack of diversity in leadership, particularly African-American women, across all sectors. Given that the nonprofit sector is an integral part of the social system, it makes sense to have leaders that reflect the social fabric of the United States. Diversifying the nonprofit work is an important goal, not only given underrepresentation but also because of looming population shifts. This paper builds on previous mixed methods research by the authors by adding concrete implications and action points to increase diversity and inclusion.

Strategic Planning As Action Research: Envisioning The Future Of A University Library, Gregory A. Smith
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
In 2020, Liberty University’s Jerry Falwell Library (JFL) carried out a participatory strategic planning project that bore many surface similarities to an action research study: a design based on scholarly and professional literature, systematic collection of new data, structured analysis of such data, and the enactment of change based on project findings. An examination of the planning process provides the opportunity to consider whether a participatory approach to strategic planning can legitimately be viewed as a form of action research. The library’s planning process exhibited three key features of action research: a focus on change, a blurring of the distinction …

Portuguese Tourist Guides And The Digital Age, Ilidia Carvalho
International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research
The experts of tourist information, namely, the tourist guides, are a highly qualified professional class and in continuous training. Many of these professionals seem to have certain limitations in terms of using new technologies, since many of those, working today, were not born in the digital age. They have been obliged to accept these technologies and sometimes tend to look at these new ways of communicating in a sceptical way, mainly because they do not properly know how to use them. These professionals are constantly facing the need to learn how to use these new tools, which have become essential …

Quasi-School Leaders: The Lived Experiences Of High School Counseling Directors And Their Role In Schools, Andrea Evans
#LEADCC: Leading Change Conference
The aim of this study is to explore the lived experiences of high school counseling director’s and how their principal and district school counseling supervisor shape their experiences as leaders. The role of high school counseling director’s is increasingly complex, unique, and oftentimes misunderstood. They are often viewed as leaders and change agents in student’s overall success due to their unique skill levels in advocacy and collaboration (Kaffenberger, Murphy, & Bemak, 2006; McMahon, Mason, Daluga-Guenther, & Ruiz, 2014; Young, Millard, & Kneale, 2013). However, principal’s and district school counseling supervisors are key players in defining the role and responsibilities of …
