Transnational Law As A Framework For Law Clinics, Sital Kalantry, Rachael E. Hancock Feb 2021

Transnational Law As A Framework For Law Clinics, Sital Kalantry, Rachael E. Hancock

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

As the law becomes increasingly globalised and online education is increasingly emphasised, clinical legal education presents new opportunities for transnational collaboration. With more law schools introducing global clinical experiences into their curriculum, clinicians, students, clients, and practitioners are facing a host of new questions, challenges, and obstacles. These challenges are practical, logistical, ethical, and cultural. As research has found, finding a means of addressing these issues in ways that advance social justice has proven difficult. Striking a balance between client service and student learning, navigating relationships between different learning institutions, and setting ambitious but attainable goals are important elements of …

Anomalous aortic origin of coronary arteries (AAOCA) represents a rare congenital heart disease. However, this disease is the second most common cause of sudden cardiac death in apparently healthy athletes. The aim of this systematic review is to analyze the feasibility and the detection rate of AAOCA by echocardiography in children and adults. A literature search was performed within the National Library of Medicine using the following keywords: coronary artery origin anomalies and echocardiography; then, the search was redefined by adding the keywords: athletes, children, and high take-off. Nine echocardiographic studies investigating AAOCA and a total of 33,592 children and …

Mir-21 Plays A Dual Role In Tumor Formation And Cytotoxic Response In Breast Tumors, Tu Dan, Anuradha A. Shastri, Ajay Palagani, Simone Buraschi, Thomas Neill, Jason E Savage, Aastha Kapoor, Tiziana Deangelis, Sankar Addya, Kevin Camphausen, Renato V. Iozzo, Nicole L Simone

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Breast cancer (BrCa) relies on specific microRNAs to drive disease progression. Oncogenic miR-21 is upregulated in many cancers, including BrCa, and is associated with poor survival and treatment resistance. We sought to determine the role of miR-21 in BrCa tumor initiation, progression and treatment response. In a triple-negative BrCa model, radiation exposure increased miR-21 in both primary tumor and metastases. In vitro, miR-21 knockdown decreased survival in all BrCa subtypes in the presence of radiation. The role of miR-21 in BrCa initiation was evaluated by implanting wild-type miR-21 BrCa cells into genetically engineered mouse models where miR-21 was intact, heterozygous …

Refined Alignment Method For Single-Axis Rotary Inertial Navigation Based On Fuzzy Adaptive Filtering, Hu Jie, Xiaozhu Shi Feb 2021

Refined Alignment Method For Single-Axis Rotary Inertial Navigation Based On Fuzzy Adaptive Filtering, Hu Jie, Xiaozhu Shi

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to restrain the influence of saw tooth velocity error caused by the inertial measurement unit (IMU) rotation on the initial alignment accuracy of single-axis rotary strapdown inertial navigation system (SINS), a refined alignment method based on fuzzy adaptive Kalman filtering is proposed. After calculating the ratio of actual covariance to theoretical covariance of the innovation sequence, the method adaptively adjusts the measurement noise covariance matrix by using the fuzzy inference system (FIS), so that it can adapt to the changes of measurement noise caused by IMU rotation. The initial alignment validation experiments under the swing environment …

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the problem of unreasonable virtual force tactical confrontation action parameters in the simulation training of armored force equipment system, resulting in unsatisfactory training effects, the idea of estimating posterior probability with prior probability is adopted to correct the parameters. According to the OODA theory, the tactical confrontation movement of armored forces is decomposed and an index system of influencing factors is constructed; the parameter collection method is proposed to establish the Bayesian network correction model and to realize dynamic adjustment; the expected optimization algorithm and the principal component analysis method are used to process the training data …

Removal Of Epididymal Visceral Adipose Tissue Prevents Obesity-Induced Multi-Organ Insulin Resistance In Male Mice, Michael P Franczyk, Mai He, Jun Yoshino Feb 2021

Removal Of Epididymal Visceral Adipose Tissue Prevents Obesity-Induced Multi-Organ Insulin Resistance In Male Mice, Michael P Franczyk, Mai He, Jun Yoshino

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Obesity is associated with insulin resistance, an important risk factor of type 2 diabetes, atherogenic dyslipidemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The major purpose of this study was to test hypothesize that prophylactic removal of epididymal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) prevents obesity-induced multi-organ (liver, skeletal muscle, adipose tissue) insulin resistance. Accordingly, we surgically removed epididymal VAT pads from adult C57BL/6J mice and evaluated in vivo and cellular metabolic pathways involved in glucose and lipid metabolism following chronic high-fat diet (HFD) feeding. We found that VAT removal decreases HFD-induced body weight gain while increasing subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) mass. Strikingly, VAT …

Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Device Therapy In Adults With Transposition Of The Great Vessels, Tadahisa Sugiura, Chitaru Kurihara, Masashi Kawabori, Andre C Critsinelis, Andrew B Civitello, Jeffrey A Morgan, O H Frazier

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

An increasing number of children with congenital heart disease are surviving into adulthood and subsequently developing end-stage heart failure. Two example populations are adults who have been previously operated on for congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) and transposition of the great arteries (TGA). Implantation of a continuous flow left ventricular assist device (CF-LVAD) in these patients can present unusual anatomical and physiologic challenges. In this report, we describe outcomes of CF-LVAD implantation in three such patients. These cases demonstrate the feasibility of implanting a CF-LVAD in patients who have undergone surgery for CCTGA and/or TGA.

Special State Standing Is Environmental: Clarifying Massachusetts V. Epa, Dorothea Allocca Feb 2021

Special State Standing Is Environmental: Clarifying Massachusetts V. Epa, Dorothea Allocca

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

When the Court granted states “special solicitude in [its] standing analysis” in Massachusetts v. EPA, it left lower courts with more questions than answers. While legal scholars continue to debate these questions thirteen years later, the practical impacts of Massachusetts v. EPA are coming into focus. Today states are suing the federal government, often in multistate coalitions, to enforce or challenge federal administrative policies. This intergovernmental, public-law litigation increased dramatically during the Obama administration and has further skyrocketed since January 2017. States do not exclusively rely upon special state solicitude in suing the federal government. However, this lowered procedural bar …

Navigating The Blue Economy, Edward Canuel Feb 2021

Navigating The Blue Economy, Edward Canuel

William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review

The time has come, the Walrus said,

To talk of many things:

Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—

Of cabbages—and kings—

And why the sea is boiling hot—

And whether pigs have wings.

And like the conversation of the Walrus and Carpenter walking along the “wet as wet could be” sea, the blue economy offers us the opportunity to talk of many things. Part I of this Article analyzes what the blue economy is and its relevance. Governance mechanisms, including ecosystem-based management and marine spatial planning are introduced and reviewed. The section discusses the benefits associated with such mechanisms, including streamlined decision-making, …

Suppression Of Unintentional Touch Inputs Caused By Moving Content On A Display, Zoltan Egyed Feb 2021

Suppression Of Unintentional Touch Inputs Caused By Moving Content On A Display, Zoltan Egyed

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes techniques for suppression of unintentional touch inputs caused by moving content on a display of a computing device. Due to a time delay between the moment a user decides to provide a touch input (e.g., a tap, click, swipe, pinch) to the display and the moment the touch input is detected by the device, content may move, changing the local meaning of the touch input. For example, a user may accidentally click “delete” instead of “save” if the content moves during the time it takes the user to provide the touch input. To suppress unintentional touch inputs, …

Improved Contextual Grounding By Combining Multiple Speech Transcription Hypotheses, Manaal Faruqui, Vishal Verma, Aditya Gupta

Defensive Publications Series

Processing a user’s voice command includes parsing the command to derive the components referred to therein. These identified components or arguments are then mapped to items or objects in the real world in a process known as “grounding.” In some cases, transcription inaccuracies can make it infeasible for a virtual assistant or other application to achieve accurate grounding, thus making it impossible to service the user’s command. This disclosure describes techniques to improve grounding by taking into account the top N highest-likelihood transcriptions for a user’s voice command along with contextual information accessed with the user’s permission. Improved query interpretation …

Free Speech, Strict Scrutiny And A Better Way To Handle Speech Restrictions, Aaron Pinsoneault Feb 2021

Free Speech, Strict Scrutiny And A Better Way To Handle Speech Restrictions, Aaron Pinsoneault

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

When it comes to unprotected speech categories, the Roberts Court has taken an amoral and inaccurate approach. When the Court first created unprotected speech categories-- defined categories of speech that are not protected by the First Amendment-- it was unclear what rendered a category of speech unprotected. One school of thought argued that speech was unprotected if it provided little or no value to society. The other school of thought argued that speech was unprotected if it fell into a certain category of speech that was simply categorically unprotected. Then, in 2010, the Court strongly sided with the latter approach, …

George R. R. Martin's Faith Militant In Modern America: The Establishment Clause And A State's Ability To Delegate Policing Powers To Private Police Forces Operated By Religious Institutions, Andrew Gardner

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Since the very founding of the United States, the complex relationship between government and religion has troubled and concerned lawmakers. The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution was one of the first attempts to help define and restrain the government's role in that nexus. Thomas Jefferson, in a letter praising the Establishment Clause, famously wrote that the clause "buil[t] a wall of separation between Church [and] State." However, the extent of the protections that the Establishment Clause was intended to provide is unclear, and judges as well as legal scholars have struggled with interpreting the …

The Nature Of Standing, Matthew Hall, Christian Turner Feb 2021

The Nature Of Standing, Matthew Hall, Christian Turner

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Most academic studies of standing have focused on restrictions on federal court jurisdiction drawn from Article III of U.S. Constitution and related doctrinal schemes developed by state courts. These rules are constructed atop a few words of the Constitution: "The judicial Power shall extend to all Cases, in Law and Equity," arising under various circumstances. The Supreme Court has interpreted these words to require federal courts to assess whether a plaintiff has suffered an injury in fact that is both fairly traceable to the actions of the defendant and redressable by a favorable ruling before proceeding to the merits of …

Democratizing Education Rights, Joshua E. Weishart Feb 2021

Democratizing Education Rights, Joshua E. Weishart

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

If the United States is to reverse its creeping, illiberal descent, generations of youth must emerge from this tribal, post-truth, pandemic-shattered era to mend democracy. Hope for that uncertain future lies in re-engineering how schoolchildren learn democracy-- not from a civics textbook but by experiencing it in the classroom. The sad irony is that we still lack a knowledge base, grounded in research, for that type of democratic education. Nearly two and a half centuries into the republic's existence, our commitment to democratic education is honored more in the breach than in observance. And our uninformed, polarized, and disaffected electorate …

Identifying Receptors For Neuropeptides And Peptide Hormones: Challenges And Recent Progress, Md Shadman Ridwan Abid, Somayeh Mousavi, James W. Checco Feb 2021

Identifying Receptors For Neuropeptides And Peptide Hormones: Challenges And Recent Progress, Md Shadman Ridwan Abid, Somayeh Mousavi, James W. Checco

Department of Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Intercellular signaling events mediated by neuropeptides and peptide hormones represent important targets for both basic science and drug discovery. For many bioactive peptides, the protein receptors that transmit information across the receiving cell membrane are not known, severely limiting these signaling pathways as potential therapeutic targets. Identifying the receptor(s) for a given peptide of interest is complicated by several factors. Most notably, cell-cell signaling peptides are generated through dynamic biosynthetic pathways, can act on many different families of receptor proteins, and can participate in complex ligand-receptor interactions that extend beyond a simple one-to-one archetype. Here, we discuss recent methodological advances …

This Is Minnesota: An Analysis Of Disparities In Black Student Enrollment At The University Of Minnesota Law School And The Effects Of Systemic Barriers To Black Representation In The Law, Maleah Riley-Brown, Samia Osman, Justice C. Shannon, Yemaya Hanna

Minnesota Law Review Headnotes, Vols. 94-106 (2009-2022)

Lawyers often occupy powerful positions in our society and can have a profound impact in designing and changing laws, influencing major policy regimes, and leading cities and communities. Further, the law is often lauded as a method to promote a system of justice and fairness. But for too long, the law has enforced a system of justice based in White supremacy and oppression. Laws were designed and implemented to steal land from indigenous communities, to enslave and oppress Africans, and to force Japanese-Americans into internment camps, amongst many other atrocities. To this day, the law is used to both expand …
