The Writing Processes Of Long-Term English Learners And Struggling Native English Speakers, Katherine R. Brubaker
Virginia English Journal
This study sought to identify what differences, if any, distinguish the writing processes of native English speakers (NESs) and long-term English learners (LTELs). During a 90-minute class period, 9th and 11th grade NES and LTEL students recorded themselves thinking aloud as they composed a writing sample for their English teachers, and completed survey questions related to their writing processes and their levels of attention to different aspects of the writing process. LTELs answered additional questions about their language backgrounds and their use of their languages as they write. Several English teachers also scored the students’ essays. Analysis of the results …

Methamphetamine Associated Cardiomyopathy In Pregnancy: The Distinctions And The Implications, Ashan Hatharasinghe, Hossein Akhondi
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Introduction
Methamphetamine associated cardiomyopathy (MAC) and peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) are both rare obstetric conditions. Literature regarding methamphetamine associated cardiomyopathy in the obstetric population is limited, and it can be difficult to make the distinction between the two given the similarities in clinical presentation. However similar, there are significant distinctions in the pathophysiology of these two that can help clinicians with the management process.

A Case Of Rare Subtype Of Multiple Myeloma: Secondary Plasma Cell Leukemia, Chandra Sanwal, Aftab Mahmood, Michael Bailey, Krutika Patel, Antonio Guzman
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Plasma cell leukemia is a rare, aggressive form of multiple myeloma with the presence of circulating plasma cells in the peripheral blood. There are two types of plasma cell leukemia, primary and secondary, depending on if there was previous evidence of multiple myeloma. The diagnostic criterion of plasma cell leukemia is based on a percentage (>20%) or an absolute number of (≥2 x 109/L) plasma cells in the peripheral circulation. We present the clinical course of a rare case of secondary plasma cell leukemia in a patient from the time of initial diagnosis of multiple myeloma, its remission period …

Becoming: Shaping Leader Identity Through Ethical Behavior, Yolonda T. Sanders
HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine
Leadership is hard to define but easy to recognize and is found in every facet of life. Leaders themselves range from good to bad, the extremities of which are determined by their character, actions, perception of self, how they are perceived by others and their worldviews. An individual’s values provide the basis for ethical decisions, which makes self-awareness a critical element in the development of one’s leader identity. This article provides an overview of leader identity development and offers ways for leaders to apply ethics in their everyday lives.

Implementing A Personal Wellness Program For Law Enforcement, Lee Schroeder
Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Leadership
Law enforcement is trained to handle any and every situation they may encounter when patrolling the streets. From civil cases, domestic, de-escalation, going hands-on with subjects, to having individuals at gunpoint. Law enforcement is in an occupation that can go from 0-100mph in a matter of seconds. With all the training that can make the outcomes more desirable, one aspect has been on the afterburner that is almost as important as other training. With the staggering statistic regarding law enforcement officers committing suicide, it would make sense that law enforcement should be given more training on coping abilities and even …

Fourth-Grade Students Sensemaking Of Word Problems, Gabriel T. Matney, Jonathan D. Bostic, Miranda Fox, Toni Sondergeld, Gregory Stone
School of Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to investigate fourth-grade students' sensemaking of a word problem. Sensemaking occurs when students connect their understanding of a situation with existing knowledge. We investigated students' sensemaking about a word problem by comparing students' strategy use. Inductive analysis was used to find themes about student sensemaking. Students exhibited one of three levels of sensemaking. Some problem-solving strategies, as a result of students' sensemaking, led to a greater frequency of correct results.

Given the importance of fresh water, we investigated undergraduate students' understanding of water flow and its consequences. We probed introductory geology students' pre-instruction knowledge using a classroom management system at two large research-intensive universities. Open-ended clicker questions, where students click directly on diagrams using their smart device (e.g., cell phone, tablet) to respond, probed students' predictions about: (1) groundwater movement and (2) velocity and erosion in a river channel. Approximately one-third of students correctly identified groundwater flow as having lateral and vertical components; however, the same number of students identified only vertical components to flow despite the diagram depicting enough …

The Influence Of Juvenile Dinosaurs On Community Structure And Diversity, Katlin Schroeder, S. Kathleen Lyons, Felisa A. Smith
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Despite dominating biodiversity in the Mesozoic, dinosaurs were not speciose. Oviparity constrained even gigantic dinosaurs to less than 15 kg at birth; growth through multiple morphologies led to the consumption of different resources at each stage. Such disparity between neonates and adults could have influenced the structure and diversity of dinosaur communities. Here, we quantified this effect for 43 communities across 136 million years and seven continents. We found that megatheropods (more than 1000 kg) such as tyrannosaurs had specific effects on dinosaur community structure. Although herbivores spanned the body size range, communities with megatheropods lacked carnivores weighing 100 to …

Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) and BERT-based approaches are the current state-of-the-art in many natural language processing (NLP) tasks; however, their application to document classification on long clinical texts is limited. In this work, we introduce four methods to scale BERT, which by default can only handle input sequences up to approximately 400 words long, to perform document classification on clinical texts several thousand words long. We compare these methods against two much simpler architectures -- a word-level convolutional neural network and a hierarchical self-attention network -- and show that BERT often cannot beat these simpler baselines when classifying …

Asassn-18am/Sn 2018gk: An Overluminous Type Iib Supernova From A Massive Progenitor, Dirk Grupe
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
ASASSN-18am/SN 2018gk is a newly discovered member of the rare group of luminous, hydrogen-rich supernovae (SNe) with a peak absolute magnitude of 𝑀𝑉 20 mag that is in between normal core-collapse SNe and superluminous SNe. These SNe show no prominent spectroscopic signatures of ejecta interacting with circumstellar material (CSM), and their powering mechanism is debated. ASASSN-18am declines extremely rapidly for a Type II SN, with a photospheric-phase decline rate of 60 mag (100 d)1. Owing to the weakening of Hi and the appearance of He i in its later phases, ASASSN-18am is spectroscopically a Type IIb SN with a partially …

The Globalgothic Vampire: Application Of And Benefits For The English Studies Model, David Lawrence Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation utilizes canonical vampire texts interlaced with pop-culture story-worlds and international cultural remediations to demonstrate the flexibility of the Globalgothic as a viable and valuable research lens to facilitate skills-based learning in undergraduate students by utilizing each of the four branches of the English Studies Model; literature, linguistics, rhetoric, and pedagogy. For this dissertation, I will be using the term Globalgothic as suggested by Glennis Byron. The focus of this literary lens is not merely to look at the conventions traditionally associated with the gothic genre, such as crumbling houses, a sense of foreboding, dark omens, and damsels in …
