BACKGROUND: Compared with national averages, rural Appalachians experience extremely elevated rates of premature morbidity and mortality. New opportunities, including approaches incorporating personal technology, may help improve lifestyles and overcome health inequities.
OBJECTIVE: This study aims to gather perspectives on whether a healthy lifestyle intervention, specifically an app originally designed for urban users, may be feasible and acceptable to rural residents. In addition to a smartphone app, this program-Make Better Choices 2-consists of personalized health coaching, accelerometer use, and financial incentives.
METHODS: We convened 4 focus groups and 16 key informant interviews with diverse community stakeholders to assess perspectives on this …
Legal Financial Obligations & Rehabilitation: How The Ability To Pay Fines And Fees Disproportionately Affects Citizens Based On Socioeconomic Status, Bailey R. Code
University Honors Theses
In the United States, legal financial obligations (LFO's), also known as monetary sanctions or criminal justice financial obligations, refer to the fines and fees that result from an individual’s involvement in the criminal justice system. Today, these fines and fees have become the most common form of punishment used by the United States' legal system. This paper answers the following research question: How can the ability to pay legal financial obligations shape the rehabilitation of incarcerated people in the United States?
Legal Financial Obligations are harmful to those entangled within the justice system, as shown by their cyclical nature and …

How Transitional, Restorative, And Transformative Justice Will Address Racial Injustice, Isabelle Garnand
University Honors Theses
Racism is still deeply embedded in the United States. Dominant white cultural narratives do not acknowledge African-Americans’ experiences, and previous methods of addressing it have not been sufficient. Through a literature review using PsychInfo, Google Scholar, and Google the author researched how transitional, restorative, and transformative justice have been used in the U.S. and other countries to establish what methods of each would be best adopted for the U.S. The author proposes change through addressing racism on the state and county level using these multiple levels of justice throughout the U.S. to create space to perpetuate conversations, actions, and beginning …

Aging is associated with increased risk of ocular disease, suggesting that age-associated molecular changes in the eye increase its vulnerability to damage. Although there are common pathways involved in aging at an organismal level, different tissues and cell types exhibit specific changes in gene expression with advanced age. Drosophila melanogaster is an established model system for studying aging and neurodegenerative disease that also provides a valuable model for studying age-associated ocular disease. Flies, like humans, exhibit decreased visual function and increased risk of retinal degeneration with age. Here, we profiled the aging proteome and metabolome of the Drosophila eye and …
Remote Data Collection: How Broadband Connectivity Affected The Conversion Of Physical Performance Testing To The Remote Setting During Covid-19: A Research Assistant's Assessment, Ramyar Eslami
University Honors Theses
The GET FIT Prostate and Exercising Together trials conducted by Dr. Kerri Winters-Stone incorporate exercise intervention for cancer survivors during or after completing their therapy. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the laboratory assessment of both studies was conducted in-person. However, the transition to remote assessment was required due to the safety precautions of COVID-19. Protocol outcomes for administering tests like the short physical performance battery (sPPB), which includes the 4m usual walk (4MW; m/s), chair stands (CS; sec), and standing balance measurements, were completed via a video conferencing interface called Cisco Webex.
Transitioning to remote testing determined the validity of remote …

Incivilities are pervasive among workers in healthcare institutions. Previously identified effects include deterioration of employee physical and mental health, absenteeism, burnout, and turnover, as well as reduced patient safety and quality of care. This study documented factors related to organizational civility at an academic health sciences center (AHSC) as the basis for future intervention work. We used a cross-sectional research design to conduct an online survey at four of five campuses of an AHSC. Using the Organizational Civility Scale (OCS), we assessed differences across gender, race (White and non-White) and job type (faculty or staff) in the eleven subscales (frequency …
The Effect Of Optional Retrieval Practice On Long Term Retention, Harrison Albert, Melissa Lehman
The Effect Of Optional Retrieval Practice On Long Term Retention, Harrison Albert, Melissa Lehman
Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
Retrieval practice is a well-researched cognitive strategy for improving memory for target information. A substantial amount of empirical research from several decades shows that retrieval practice has a positive effect on long-term retention of information. The current study aims to assess the effects of review activities using retrieval practice on long-term retention of course materials, and to examine their effect on test anxiety. Although some research has examined the impact of retrieval practice in course settings, there have been few controlled experiments and little research looking at the impacts on test anxiety. A multi-session exam review activity will be administered …

Group Theory Visualized Through The Rubik's Cube, Ashlyn Okamoto
University Honors Theses
In my thesis, I describe the work done to implement several Group Theory concepts in the context of the Rubik’s cube. A simulation of the cube was constructed using Processing-Java and with help from a YouTube series done by TheCodingTrain. I reflect on the struggles and difficulties that came with creating this program along with the inspiration behind the project. The concepts that are currently implemented at this time are: Identity, Associativity, Order, and Inverses. The functionality of the cube is described as it moves like a regular cube but has extra keypresses that demonstrate the concepts listed. Each concept …

Mary: A Creative Biography Of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley Through The Lens Of Her Interpersonal Relationships, Julien-Pierre E. Campbell
University Honors Theses
Mary is a creative thesis told in first-person vignettes spaced throughout Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s entire life. The work seeks to function as a creative biography, fictionalized but exploring the very real and impactful interpersonal relationships she held dear. Mary Shelley was an incredibly multifaceted person. She was at turns daring and iconoclastic, reserved and private, outgoing and adventurous, deeply depressed and bitter. She worked through much of her personal trauma and turmoil in her novels. She had trauma in spades. Three of her four children died young. Her mother died giving birth to her. Her beloved elder sister committed suicide. …

Can Early Treatment Of Twitcher Mice With High Dose Aavrh10-Galc Eliminate The Need For Bmt?, Mohammad Rafi, Paola Luzi, David A Wenger
Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
Introduction: Krabbe disease (KD) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the galactocerebrosidase (GALC) gene resulting in neuro-inflammation and defective myelination in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Most infantile patients present with clinical features before six months of age and die before two years of age. The only treatment available for pre-symptomatic or mildly affected individuals is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). In the animal models, combining bone marrow transplantation (BMT) with gene therapy has shown the best results in disease outcome. In this study, we examine the outcome of gene therapy alone.
Methods: Twitcher (twi) mice …

A robocall is a phone call that uses a computerized auto-dialer to deliver a pre-recorded message, as if from a robot. Robocalls are often associated with political and telemarketing phone campaigns. Some robocalls use personalized audio messages to simulate an actual personal phone call. Criminals and dishonest robocallers often alter or spoof the calling number of their outbound telephone calls in order to deceive a called party. This deception increases the chance that the called party will answer a robocall. In other cases, the spam calls may be more malicious. This proposal provides an artificial intelligence (AI)-based interactive and intelligent …

Persistent Optimism: The Inherency Of Security Within International Space Law, Timothy M. Bass
Florida Journal of International Law
When thinking about security in the realm of outer space, it is tempting to focus on areas like militarization, defense from attacks, hacking systems, and espionage; however, in doing so, we overlook the fundamental principles that attempt to ensure security in space law from its inception. By taking a moment to reflect on the guiding principles and goals of space exploration as laid out in treaty and domestic law from a broader perspective, it becomes clear that space is overwhelmingly hopeful in continuing the reign of peace.
The Legal And Practical Framework For Psychiatric Diagnoses As Bases For Requests For Euthanasia And Physician-Assisted Suicide In The Netherlands, Kasey Joyce
Florida Journal of International Law
There is not a clear answer on what kinds of cases are the kinds that cause successful requests for euthanasia or assisted suicide (EAS), but most of them are diagnoses that hold severe and terminal physical symptoms or those that have chronic and severe psychiatric issues. A lingering question—one that is now being debated and revisited—is whether a diagnosed mental illness falls into the requisite terminal illness definition to pass through the procedure to get the end-of-life care available in the Netherlands. This Note will analyze the standards around what kinds of cases will pass through the Physician Review Board …
